    Indian tourism industry

Tourism is the largest service industry in india, with a contribution of 6.23% tothe national GDP and 8.78% of the total employment in India. India witnesses more than 5million annual foreign tourist arrivals and 562 million domestic tourism visits. The tourismindustry in India generated about US$100 billion in 2008 and that is expected to increase toUS$275.5 billion by 2018 at a 9.4% annual growth rate. The Ministry of Tourism is the nodalagency for the development and promotion of tourism in India and maintains the"Incredible India" campaign.

According to World Travel and Tourism Council , India will be a tourism hotspot from 20092018, having the highest 10-year growth potential. The Travel & Tourism CompetitivenessReport 2007 ranked tourism in India 6th in terms of price co mpetitiveness and 39th in termsof safety and security. Despite short- and medium-term setbacks, such as shortage of hotelrooms, tourism revenues are expected to surge by 42% from 2007 to 2017 .

Tourism is a very complex industry due to its multiple activities that satisfies the need of thetourist. Tourism includes transportation, accommodation, food, catering, tourist attractionas well as organizers like tour operators and travel agents. Moreover, a tour consists of different requirements of different people and it is not a homogeneous product. Tourism isan engine of development and change. India received 3.4 million foreign visitors in 2004, up

23.5 per cent year-on-year and revenue rose 36.1 per cent to $4.8 billion. Arrivals in 2005are expected to surge by up to 30 per cent.

The tourism sector is the third largest foreign exchange earner and needs moreattention. Tourism is one of the biggest employers; it employs more people than the IT andagriculture sectors. The perception of what tourism means to a country has to undergo asea change if India has to move from its current status of 3.3 million foreign tourists arrivalsin 2004 to the top10 tourist destinations in the world. People have to be sensitive andaware of the role of tourism; otherwise we will kill the goose that lays the golden egg. When tourism increases, prosperity increases.

There is considerable presence of the government in the travel and tourism industry. Eachstate has a tourism corporation, which typically runs a chain of hot els /motels and operatespackage tours, while the central government runs the IndiaTourism DevelopmentCorporation. Divestment of these state-run tourism corporations have either already takenplace or are in process.

Incoming foreign tourist arrivals have shown a 6% compounded annual growth rate over thelast 10 years. The government has realized the potential and has advanced severalincentives to promote infrastructure growth in the tourism sector. As per the Travel and Tourism Competitiveness Report 2009 by the World Economic Forum,India is ranked 11th in the Asia Pacific region and 62nd overall, moving up three places onthe list of the world's attractive destinations. It is ranked the 14th best tourist destinationfor its natural resources and 24th for its cultural resources, with many World Heritage sites, both natural and cultural, rich fauna, and strong creative industries in the country. India alsobagged 37th rank for its air transport network. The India travel and tourism industry ranked5th in the long-term (10-year) growth and is expected to be the second largest employer inthe world by 2019.

    Contribution to the economy

Combining unparalleled growth prospects and unlimited business potential, the industry iscertainly on the foyer towards being a key player in the nation's changing face.Furthermore, banking on the government s initiative of upgrading and expanding thecountry s infrastructure like airports, national highways etc, the tourism and hospitalityindustry is bound to get a bounc e in its growth.

The hotel and tourism industry s contribution to the Indian economy by way of foreigndirect investments (FDI) inflows were pegged at US$ 2.17 billion from April 2000 toSeptember 2010, according to the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP).

India s hotel pipeline is the second largest in the Asia -Pacific region according to Jan Smits,Regional Managing Director, InterContinental Hotels Group (IHG) Asia Australasia. He addedthat the Indian hospitality industry is projected to grow at a rate of 8.8 per cent during2007-16, placing India as the second-fastest growing tourism market in the world. Initiatives

like massive investment in hotel infrastructure and open-sky policies made by thegovernment are all aimed at propelling growth in the hospitality sector.

Role of tourism industry in Indian G DP

Role of Tourism Industry in India GDP has been quite alarming since the past fewdecades. Tourism industry has contributed enormously in the flourishing graph of India'seconomy by attracting a huge number of both foreign and domestic tourists trav eling forprofessional as well as holiday purpose.

The tourism industry in India witnessed a stupendous growth in 2006. The growth in theinflows in India's tourism industry is calculated both in terms of business and vacations.

The number of foreign tourists arriving from all over the world rose from 0.37 percent to0.53 percent as has been stated by UN World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) in the year2006. This remarkable growth in the graph of tourism industry in India popularized theentire South Asia as one of the most spectacular tourist terminal. Indian tourism industrycontributes to around 5.9 percent of the country's GDP and it provides employment toaround 41.8 million of inhabitants.

Some of the most significant features of India's touris m industry or the Role of TourismIndustry in India GDP have been listed below:

y The percentage of foreign tourists in India has increased by 12.4 percent in oneyear, that is, from 2006 to 2007. In 2006, Indian tourist industry witnessed agrowth of 14.3 percent, which reached around 3.89 million in 2007 .

y The foreign tourists arrival led to a robust growth in the foreign exchangeearnings that increased from USD 5.03 billion during January-October 2006 toUSD 6.32 billion during January-October 2007, which is apparently a 25.6 percentrise.

y Deeming the growing rate of the tourists arrival in the country, the Indiantourism industry designed a wide spectrum of holiday packages and cheaperairfares to attract more tourists.

y Nonetheless, the outgoing graph of tourism industry in India is in no way laggingbehind from the inbound one. People traveling from India to abroad or stateswithin India have increased by 25 percent.

y The United Nations World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has estimated theoutgoing tourists to reach around 50 million by the year 2020.

y According to the European Travel Commission, the average expenditure per tripof Indian tourists traveling abroad has increased from USD 611 in 2000 to USD822 in 2006.

y The booming success of Indian tourism industry has led to a drastic change in the

hospitality department as well. The increase in the ratio of tourists resulted in theincrease of room rates and also setting up of a wide range of hotels and otherresiding areas.

y A number of international hotels such as the Hilton, Accor, MarriottInternational, Berggruen Hotels, Cabana Hotels, Premier Travel Inn (PTI) and InterContinental Hotels groups have professed about making some large-scaleinvestments to append 65,000 additional rooms to suffice the needs .

y India is most likely to set up forty hotels of global brands by 2011. The hospitalitysegment in India is assumed to reach USD 11.41 billion in the coming two years

Following are the few benefits ensured by the tourism industry in India GDP inorder to boost up the GDP of India:

y The Indian tourism industry offers online booking system, one of the basic proofsof technological advancement in this sector. These online bookings are applicablefor booking the air tickets via Internet by logging on to the webs ite and alsobooking the hotel room of the place to be visited.

y The online tourism industry has accounted for a turn over of USD 800 million

which is apparently 14 percent of the entire travel and tourism industry .y The Role of Tourism Industry in India GDP also features medical tourism that

includes traditional therapies like yoga, meditation, ayurveda, allopathy andother conventional systems of medicines is currently estimated at USD 333million and is most likely to reach USD 2.2 billion by the year 2012 .

Another major component of a successful travel and tourism industry is providing itsdestination with proper and planned tour arrangements through various means of transportand communication. And to look into this with details we need a good tour organizer, who iswell versed with its country, various destination and connectivity in a shorter span of time.We need a person who is able to give authentic information and is able to plan a travelitinerary in systematic and planned manner, where by the best of country is shown as ashowcase to a visitor. There are lot of people who plan their own itinerary, but they shouldposses up to date information of a country s physical, political, economical and socialconditions which can be time consuming and need a lot of exchange of information and

    communication before it is finalized.

Role of tour operator in tourism industry

Man as a social animal has beings travelling since timeimmemorial in urge of knowledge, peace, and discovery and because of social bindings. Thishas been a risky and expensive hobby. A more organized and modern concept was firstoriginated in England. In 1729, a man by the name Thomas Cook started charted trips whishwas combination of transport, hotel and a role of tour operator. This was birth of first TourOperator.

A tour operator is a person, who helps in providing information related to travel. Arrangingtravel itineraries, making hotel bookings and land arrangements, like travel by car, coach, orrail and air, thus combining all this into complete package. Sometimes, they also suggesttailor made itineraries to suite their guest requirement. Alternatively, various entertainmentprograms, mock functions and theme parties are also organized, trying to give its guest thebest of its country in shortest possible time, which is insured in a smooth manner. They also provide various other facilities such as facilitation, arranging loss of traveldocuments like passports, foreign exchange, lost baggage, visa services, as and when it isrequired. In case of any natural and unforeseen clematises, all possible arrangements are

also organized in shortest possible time.

Apart from making land arrangements, they are also actively promoting various trainbookings and cruises. Cruises are relatively a new selling tools and alternate for people of special interest who are elite and enjoys travel by sea in relaxed and leisure manner. Varioustour operators are selling services of internationally recognized companies like Star Cruises,Royal Caribbean. Another area, which is explored, covers various sports activities like scubadiving, paragliding, bungee jumping, rock climbing, river rafting, helisking and ice -skating.These tour operator also work in close contact with various travel agents to arrange all

above services. Thus both tour operator and travel agent work together in providing aboveservices to a traveler in India. Tour Operators can be classified as Inbound Tou r Operatorand Outbound Tour Operator. Inbound Tour Operator provides services with in a countryand Outbound Tour Operator arranges itineraries for travel outside a country.

Tour Operators and Travel Agents are part of variousinternational associations like PATA, WTO, IUOTO, IATA-UFTAA, ASTA, TAAI, and SKAL CLUB.Memberships in these associations help, in getting recognition and play a major role ingenerating business.

Medical tourism was poised for rapid development in the future and India is busydeveloping first-class facilities to attract this multi-billion dollar niche market.Thegovernment has already relaxed the criteria to receive a visa for medical tourism.

Tourist arrivals in the country slowed throughout 2008, after rising 13 percent year -on-yearfrom 2005-2007, due to a slowdown in the main source markets for India, the U.S. and U.K.,which account for more than 15 percent of all inbound tourists.

    The Scene Till Now

Some major international events like 9/11, US-led war against terror and SARS hit thetourism industry over the past few years. Cutting down of routes by domestic airlines andincrease in airfares last year also led to a fall in the movement of people in the country. The

Mumbai terror attacks, targetting two premium hotels, also tarnished the country'sreputation, drastically reducing hotel occupancy levels, and affecting year-end travel. Theadverse travel advisories by many countries to their citizens too contributed to a significantslowdown in tourism in India.

There were other negatives too. Consider this- Expenses per night of stay for a tourist inIndia during the SE Asian currency crisis was $100 whereas it was around $35 -40 in the SEAsian countries. This hurt Indian tourism. Though this discrepancy has come down, still

Tourism is a growing industry in India. Hoteliering as well as tourism account for the majorforeign earnings for our nation. The declining value of the rupee and a good image of Indiaas an exotic tourist destination have boosted the tourism and hotel industry in India duringthe late nineties.

It is very surprising to note that small countries like Indonesia, Mauritius, Seyshells,Malaysia, Hong Kong and Thailand have been able to do very well on the tourism front. Indiais the ancient cultural cradle of the world. It has fascinating tourist destinations like the TajMahal, The Khajuraho temples, the marble mountains, The Gateway of India, the Red fortand the Qutub Minar, The Ajmer Palace, The Bharatpur, Bird Sanctuary, The city of Canalsand many more. We Indians are also not aware of the beauty of our country. Our ancientcities, palaces, lakes, temples, gardens, minarets, mosques, and lakes mountains delightfulexperiences for all the travelers as well as visitors. The foreign tourist longs for a tryst withIndia and loves to visit each and every corner of this vast country.

Our tourism exchange earnings are less than $1.5 billion and account of 0.5 percent of thetotal tourism traffic of the world. On the other hand, the tourism earnings of Singapore are$34 billion. The same figures are $6.5 billion for Malaysia. The facts do not point towards ahealthy trend. We have not to depend merely upon the dollars rupee parity but also, wehave to generate enough of interest about the Indian subcontinent in the minds of thetourists so that they continue to come here and enjoy being here.

The problem of Kashmir has not been solved. Ten years before many tourists werekidnapped and a few of them were killed by the Kashmiri militants. Although the situation isunder control, yet the army has to keep strict vigil over the sea. Therefore, the inflow of tourists is less. The situation is much better now and many Indians and foreigners visitedKashmir.

Central India, The North Eastern states, Calcutta, Mumbai, New Delhi, Khajuraho, and Goaare the most popular tourist destinations. Rajasthan is paradise for the foreigners and thisstate provides a wide range of cultural and ethnic diversities to the visitors.

The foreign tourists are appalled at the state of Indian catering services, roads, guidesservices, hotels motels, and transportation services and above all, the degradingenvironment of the Indian subcontinent. We would have to provide four star amenities tothe tourists at the prices of three state standards. If we do not follow this norm, we wouldlose tourists to the United States of America, Seychells, Mauritius, Singapore, Thailand,Hongkong, and Japan. These countries offer entertainment, good quality rooms, and

transportation, liquor, as well as food, at the most competitive prices. They follow

international tourism norms in terms of catering,

hospitality, and hygiene. We do not follow any norms and this leads to aversion on the partof the tourists from India.

It is fortunate to note that hotel management and tourism have become serious subjects aswell as vocations. The government as well as the private institutions has launched manycourses in tourism as well as hotel management. The professionals in tourism and travel arerequired by tour operators as well as airlines. The sea cruisers and airlines also needhospitality staff and chefs are required around the world. Hotel profession als are also ingreat demand. This would boost the hotel industry as well as the economy.

The services of tourist guides, catering, roads, air travel, sanitation, transportation, andtelecommunications would have to be operated on professional grounds. Th e internationalagency is doing well to promote and regulate air travel around the world. The Governmentof India is also doing its best. The participation of the private firms has also increased. However, a lot needs to be done in this crucial area. We ca n earn a lot through tourism aswell as hotel industries. Our outlook and approach would have to be professionalized if wewant to achieve concrete results in this fastest growing industry.
