Theme Parks

The opening of Disneyland changed the local amusement park business considerably because it expanded the concept of amusement parks from simply rides and carnival barkers to include shows, shops, and restaurants in theme settings with immaculate cleanliness, promising adventure, history, science fiction, and fantasy. The success of Disneyland brought Walt Disney World, the largest and grandest theme park in the world, with its Magic Kingdom as the focal point of the resort complex.

Gaming or the Gambling IndustryAs a recreational pursuit, gaming is becoming more popular, especially in the United States. It is often combined

with other types of entertainment, such as nightclub shows and sports activities.Casino gaming industries in many countries have experienced substantial growth and expansion in the 1990s. Much

of this has been a direct result of explicit strategies adopted by state, provincial or national governments which believe that casinos can be an important catalyst in creating or otherwise stimulating growth and tourism within their borders. However, the success of using casinos as a growth strategy and a tourism strategy has been mixed. The actual impacts of casino developments and their contributions to tourism objectives have depended on a variety of circumstances.

Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation

RECREATION

Recreation is an activity of leisure, leisure being discretionary time. Recreational activities are often done for enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure and are considered to be "fun". The term recreation implies participation to be healthy refreshing mind and body.

Many travelers seek adventure, challenge and excitement in the kinds of outdoor settings. Hiking, cycling, mountaineering, canoeing, kayaking, sailing, horseback riding, river rafting, scuba diving, sky diving, snowmobiling, and nature and wildlife viewing are just some of the activities included in this portion of the industry. The industry therefore needs staff that combines special expertise with their love and knowledge of the outdoors. As with all tourism occupations, employees must enjoy working with people and be skilled at understanding and meeting individual needs. In addition, they must respect the environment and help others to respect it as well, to ensure the ecology is respected and maintained for the future.

Page 9: Tourism

The Adventure Tourism and Outdoor Recreation SectorAdventure Tourism is an outdoor leisure activity that generally takes place in an unusual, exotic, remote or wilderness setting, sometimes involving some form of unconventional means of transportation and tending to be associated with low or high levels of physical activity.

Two categories under Adventure tourism: Hard adventure

- Hard adventure, such as mountain climbing, involves some risk and involves some risk and requires strenuous physical exertion on part of the participant.

Soft adventure- Soft adventure, such as hiking on a trail, is less risky, less strenuous, and requires little or no participation. To

capture the tourist looking for a soft adventure, whitewater rafting companies have gone to larger more stable rafts or quieter areas of the river.

Outdoor recreation is commonly divided into three areas of activity: skiing, gold and tennis, and marine activities.Organized recreation many recreational activities are organized, typically by public institutions, voluntary group-work agencies, private groups supported by membership fees, and commercial enterprises. Examples of each of these are the National Park Service, the YMCA, the Kiwanis, and Disney World.

Health and recreation

Recreation has many health benefits, and, accordingly, recreational therapy has been developed to take advantage of this effect. Such therapy is applied in rehabilitation, and in the care of the elderly, the disabled, or people with chronic diseases. Recreational physical activity is important to reduce obesity, and the risk of osteoporosis and of cancer, most significantly in men that of colon and prostate, and in women that of the breast; however, not all malignancies are reduced as outdoor recreation has been linked to a higher risk of melanoma. Extreme adventure recreation naturally carries its own hazards.

Recreational vehicle or RV is the usual term for a motor vehicle or trailer equipped with living space and amenities found in a home.

A recreational vehicle normally includes a kitchen, a bathroom, a bedroom and a living room. In other countries the terms caravan, camper van or motorhome are more common, and the vehicles themselves vary, although typically being smaller than those in North America. A recreational vehicle is any vehicle, whether towed or driven that has a kitchen, bathroom, bedroom and living area. Recreational vehicles include: motorhome (class A, B, and C), travel trailer, fifth wheel trailer, popup trailer, and slide-in camper.

Park

A park is an area of open space provided for recreational use. It can be in its natural or semi-natural state, or planted, and set aside for human enjoyment, or - in addition- for the protection of wildlife or natural habitats. It may consist of rocks, soil, water, flora and fauna and grass areas, but may also contain buildings and other artefacts such as play grounds. Many natural parks are legally protected by law.

National parks

A national park is a reserve of land, usually, but not always declared and owned by a national government, protected from most human development and pollution. Although this may be so, it is not likely that the government of a specific

Page 10: Tourism

area owns it, rather the community itself. National parks are a protected area of IUCN category II. The largest national park in the world is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974.

In the United States the concept of preserving landscapes for the pleasure of the people was established on June 30, 1864, when President Abraham Lincoln signed the bill creating the Yosemite Grant. A policy of preservation, rather than co-usage as in the National Forests, where grazing, farming and logging are licensed, was implemented four decades later during the presidential administration of Teddy Roosevelt, and Yosemite became a national park. Tourism and, later, recreation were the intended purposes of the lands Roosevelt set aside in the system. John Muir was instrumental in this effort.

These parks were termed national parks and today are looked after by the U.S. National Park Service. There are also national parks in many other countries.

A national park is a park, in use for conservation purposes. Often it is a reserve of natural, semi-natural, or developed land that a sovereign state declares or owns. Although individual nations designate their own national parks differently, there is a common idea: the conservation of wild nature for posterity and as a symbol of national pride.,[1] Furthermore, an international organization, the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), and its World Commission on Protected Areas, has defined "National Park" as its Category II type of protected areas. While ideas for this type of national park had been suggested previously, the United States established the first such one, Yellowstone National Park, in 1872. The largest national park in the world meeting the IUCN definition is the Northeast Greenland National Park, which was established in 1974. According to the IUCN, there were 6,555 national parks worldwide in 2006 that meet its criteria.

State parks are thus similar to national parks, but under state rather than federal administration. Similarly, local government entities below state level may maintain parks, e.g., regional parks or county parks. In general, state parks are smaller than national parks, with a few exceptions such as the Adirondack Park in New Yorkand Anza-Borrego Desert State Park in California.

The National Parks Development Committee is a government agency that is tasked to oversee national parks in the Philippines. It was established primarily for the purpose of developing and maintaining national parks specifically the Rizal Park or Luneta, Paco Park, the Pook ni Maria Makiling and Burnham Park.

The NPDC was established on January 14, 1963 by Executive Order 30 for the development of Quezon Memorial Circle, Luneta and other National Parks. In 1964, the committee was then designated as the "National Parks Development Committee". It was attached to the Department of Tourism in 1987.

Adventure Travel

Adventure travel is a type of tourism, involving exploration or travel to remote, exotic and possibly hostile areas. Adventure tourism is rapidly growing in popularity, as tourists seek different kinds of vacations. According to the U.S. based Adventure Travel Trade Association, adventure travel may be any tourist activity, including two of the following three components: a physical activity, a cultural exchange or interaction and engagement with nature.

Adventure tourism gains much of its excitement by allowing its participants to step outside of their comfort zone. This may be from experiencing culture shock or through the performance of acts, that require significant effort and involve some degree of risk (real or perceived) and/or physical danger (See extreme sports). This may include activities such as mountaineering, trekking, bungee jumping, mountain biking, rafting, zip-lining, paragliding, and rock climbing. Some obscure forms of adventure travel include disaster and ghetto tourism. Other rising forms of adventure travel include social and jungle tourism.

Access to inexpensive consumer technology, with respect to Global Positioning Systems, flash packing, social networking and photography, have increased the worldwide interest in adventure travel. The interest in independent adventure travel has also increased as more specialist travel websites emerge offering previously niche locations and sports.

Top 5 Outdoor Activities that You Can Do in the Philippines

A lot of foreign people visit the Philippines. Most of them are here to put up a business while others are here to look for a partner in life. There are also missionaries who are here to give assistance to those who are in need. But aside from the ones mentioned above, what are the other things that you can do in the Philippines? With 7107 islands, Philippines has a lot to offer. Here is a list of the top 5 outdoor activities that you can do in the Philippines whether you’re a foreign tourist or a local resident:

Swimming

Philippines is a tropical country and we have a warm weather here. So yeah, it’s one of the main reasons why swimming in the country is good. But aside from that, Philippines is also blessed with beautiful white sand beaches. The most famous among the beaches here is Boracay. The island is known for its powdery white sand and pristine water.

Palawan island is another choice for beach swimming. Most people say that Palawan can compete with Boracay. Also, Palawan island is not as populated as Boracay so it’s a good choice if you want a peaceful vacation.

Island Hopping

As an archipelagic country, Philippines is a good place for island hopping. Some of the islands here are equal to one province just like Siquijor and Camiguin. Stay in an island for three to four days so that you’ll have enough time to see and experience each of the unique surroundings.

The best place that I can suggest for island hopping is the Hundred Islands of Pangasinan. Overall, there are 124 islands at low tide and 123 islands at high tide. The islands are believed to be around 2,000,000 years old. Several species of animals are also found in the place including Fraser’s dolphins.

Another place in the Philippines that can compare with the Hundred Islands of Pangasinan is the Britannia Group of Islands in Surigaodel Sur. The place is composed of 24 islands and islets. The islands are not yet developed for tourism and I hope it would stay that way so that the natural beauty of the islands would be preserved. There are no cottages nor entrance fees. You can bring your own blanket and food and then eat on the ground. Just be careful with your garbage and make sure you bring it with you when you leave.

Whale Shark & Dolphin Watching

In Oslob, Cebu, you can experience to swim with the gentle giants or the whale sharks. You will need to ride a boat with a guide who will help you find the whale sharks. About 14 or 15 of the sharks have grown to be the fishermen’s pets because they feed the giant sharks.

The waters of Panglao in Bohol is known for dolphin watching. The dolphins leap on the surface of the water and make distinguishing sounds.

Surfing

SurigaodelNorte is the surfing capital of the Philippines. The place was once quiet but over the years, it has gained the attention of local and foreign surfers. The place is also blessed with beautiful white sand beaches, mangrove trees, rock formations, and mysterious caves.

Ziplining

The Dahilayan Adventure Park’s 840 meter dual ziplines with a drop of 100 meters is the longest in Asia. If you’re adventurous or if you have some fears that you want to conquer, trying the Asia’s lonest zipline is great. There are also other adventure parks in the Philippines that have ziplines. Even some beach resorts do. I have only tried it once and I’m thinking if I should do it again.Philippines have a lot more to offer but the ones listed above are the most exciting activities. Try one of those the next time you have a vacation.

Festival and Events

A festival or gala is an event, usually and ordinarily staged by a local community, which centers on and celebrates some unique aspect of that community and the Festival.

Among many religions, a feast is a set of celebrations in honour of God or gods. A feast and a festival are historically interchangeable. However, the term "feast" has also entered common secular parlance as a synonym for any large or elaborate meal. When used as in the meaning of a festival, most often refers to a religious festival rather than a film or art festival.

In the Philippines and many other former Spanish colonies, the Spanish word fiesta is used to denote a communal religious feast to honour a patron saint.

In the Christian liturgical calendar there are two principal feasts, properly known as the Feast of the Nativity of our Lord (Christmas) and the Feast of the Resurrection, (Easter). In the Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Anglican liturgical calendars there are a great number of lesser feasts throughout the year commemorating saints, sacred events, doctrines, etc.

The word fest derives from the from word festivus, from the Latin word festivus. Festival was first recorded as a noun in 1589. Before it had been used as an adjective from the fourteenth century, meaning to celebrate a church holiday. The etymology of feast is very similar to that of festival. The word "feste" comes from Middle English, from Middle French, from the Latin word festa. There can be many different types of festivals, like Halloween, Saturnalia, and Christmas.
