To begin your “Scenic Journey” through Greene County, follow the solid green line on the large county map. Regardless of where you begin, it will take you to all corners of the county. 1American Bott oms Area – This 5200-acre area is one of the most unique geological features in Indiana, described as a large basin surrounded by bluff s and ridges on three sides formed by a pre-glacier trench, consisti ng of approximately 100 ft . of gravel, sand, and silt. What makes the area unique is that it has no surface drainage out of it, but instead uti lizes two porous types of stones, Sandstone and Beech Creek Limestone to provide a natural drainage system known as the “Swallow Hole”.

Goose Pond Fish & Wildlife Area – Historically known as the “Goose Pond” and the “Bee Hunter Marsh”, this 8,034-acre State Fish and Wildlife Area is one of the largest and most successful wetland restorati on projects in the United States, which includes over 30 miles of earthen dikes, 1,400 acres of prairie, and nearly 4,000 acres of shallow water. Today, the area is becoming a signifi cant desti nati on for Midwestern birders and hunters; and home to many migrati ng bird species, att ested by the impressive Sandhill Crane fl y-in each spring, as well as many endangered species such as the Bald Eagle, Northern Harrier, Short-Eared Owl, Wilson’s Phalarope, King Rail, Sedge Wren, Henslow’s Sparrow, Whooping Crane, and American and Least Bitt erns.

Greene-Sullivan State Forest - Founded in 1936 on more than 3,000 acres of former coal company property, the area now includes nearly 9,000 acres of wooded rolling hills dott ed with more than 120 easily accessible lakes, making it one of the most unique areas in Indiana. Many lakes are stocked with largemouth bass, bluegill and red-ear sunfi sh off ering some of the fi nest fi shing in the State.

Hillenbrand Fish & Wildlife Area – The area encompasses 3,400 acres of upland game and wetland habitat, including grasslands, lakes, wetlands, and shallow impoundments provide quality hunti ng and fi shing opportuniti es.

Largest Sycamore Tree – Located in the Worthington City Park, a monument containing one of the surviving remnants of a tree, 23 ft . 2 in. in circumference, moved to this locati on in 1925 aft er it succumbed to a storm. Esti mated at 500 yrs. old, the Oxford Journal of Heredity reported in September 1915 that the tree was the largest “Broad-Leaf Tree in the United States” measuring 42 ft . 3 in. in circumference.

Lee Sherrard Park – Known as the Linton Conservati on Club, the 660-acre park includes an 8-mile mountain bike trail, 300 campsites, 14 stocked lakes, the 1930 Center of Populati on Marker, and a historic community building, known as the “Clubhouse” built in 1930 by the Civilian Conservati on Corps (CCC) as a WPA project.

Mt. Nebo – Located in Taylor Township on CR 710S between Newberry and Scotland, the site houses the Mt. Nebo United Brethren Church organized in 1885 and constructed in 1895. The church and cemetery sit atop a hill off ering spectacular views of the surrounding valley and rolling hills of southern Greene County and northern Daviess County.

Shakamak State Park – Encompassing parts of Greene, Sullivan, and Clay Counti es, the main park entrance is located just east of Jasonville and contains over 400 acres of water, 8½ miles of trails, numerous camping faciliti es, and a Family Aquati c Center. Owing its name to the Shakamak Indians, the 1,766-acre park features the former camp of the Civilian Conservati on Corps who contributed signifi cantly to park improvements, which today help defi ne the Shakamak State Park Historic District listed on the Nati onal Register of Historic Places.

Sunset Park Recreati on Area – This 300-acre facility features primiti ve and electric campsites, a swimming area, paddleboats, and 8 lakes, oft en noted as some of the clearest in Indiana and allowing one of the most complete scuba diving faciliti es in the area off ering 9 PADI Programs.
