TOURISM Monitoring: Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Transformative Pathways: for Better Tourism!
KOMBO BEACH HOTEL, GAMBIA 24th -26th April 2018
Hon. AMAT BAH
Minister of Tourism and Culture
April 24th is deliberately selected to host this workshop to mark the date The Gambia, like many other
colonised countries, attained a republican status from Britain in 1970, and became a country that
should rely on its own resources to survive as a nation. The date therefore symbolises the need to build
a tourism that is created for a better future for all in The Gambia. We are committed as a government
of NEW Gambia to make this a reality.
The Ministry of Tourism and Culture under my leadership is committed to implement the Sustainable
Development Goals in Tourism in The Gambia, so that, we can rebrand the Gambia as a destination
that is out to respect the sociocultural development of our people, the conservation of the environment
and to attract what I called responsible investment, that is a win-win to companies and the people of
this country.
In this regard, we are inviting everyone to come and attend this seminar on Monitoring the SDGs in
Tourism to make The Gambia, Africa and the world a better place to live in and a better place to visit
through responsible tourism practices. Come and join us and share your experience!

It was on 1 January 2016, that the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) of the 2030 Agenda for
Sustainable Development, adopted by world leaders in the September 2015 UN summit, officially
came into force. It is one thing to make a declaration, another to put it into practice, and yet another
to monitor such a practice for positive impact. It is for this reason that we are organising this
workshop.
The main goal of the workshop is to transform Agenda 2030’s theoretical blueprint to a substantive,
practical and progressive direction that can provide us with the monitoring tools to build an inclusive
world free from poverty, exploitation and injustice. In practical terms this workshop will define how we
can keep track of progress using the right indicators for measuring and monitoring the SDGs in tourism.
In March 2017, over 30 participants from 19 countries, including representatives of NGOs, people’s
movements and academia joined together to prepare and sign the Berlin Declaration on Transforming
Tourism to achieve the vision of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development of a just, inclusive and
equal world.
Following the Berlin Declaration, we appreciate the fact that the International Centre for Responsible
Tourism-West Africa, Tourism Watch, Germany and the Ministry of Tourism and Culture, The Gambia
are organising a three-day International Workshop in The Gambia on the 24th - 26th April 2018 on
monitoring of the SDGs-for Better Tourism.
Come and join us!
