Arrival by trainSlovenia has international railway connections with neighbouring and other countries. Most trains arrive at the central station in Ljubljana, only a few minutes’ walk away from the city centre. All major Slovenian towns may be quickly and comfortably reached from Ljubljana. PHENOMENA OF MUSIC Slavko Avsenik is famous worldwide as the king of polka. He and his brother Vilko are the fathers of popular folk music. Their composition Na Golici was the world’s most frequently played instrumental composition of the 20th century.
TOP ATHLETESSlovenia is a country of top athletes and the cradle of skiing in Central Europe. Skiers from the Bloke Plateau were pioneers of moving on snow with wooden skis. Centuries later, many Slovenian skiers have won victories in World Cup events.
Anže Kopitar plays in the most prestigious hockey league in the word and has brought the Stanley Cup to Slovenia twice. The Dragič brothers are stars in the NBA basketball league. Slovenian athletes are simply exceptional, both individually and in team sports.

WINE STORIESSlovenia is a European wine map in miniature. Maribor is even home to the oldest vine in the world. It is almost 500 years old, but not as old as the oldest Slovenian wine cellar in Ptuj. Wine-growing locations in Slovenia rank among five per cent of the best in the world. International and local grape varieties grow alongside each other. Try red Teran and Refosco from Primorska, and white Zelen wine from the Vipava Valley and Cviček from Dolenjska. The Goriška Brda Hills are among the most romantic wine-growing regions. Don’t miss the traditional festivities on St Martin’s Day in November around Slovenia.
SLOVENIAN SWEETSSlovenian cakes and breads are just as diverse as Slovenia. Savoury, sweet, white, corn, stuffed… and all delicious. Taste buds are thrilled by the six layers of traditional succulent Prekmurska gibanica. Potica is the most typical Slovenian dessert and is prepared with over 80 various fillings. TRADITIONAL SLOVENIAN DISHESKranjska klobasa is a world-famous Slovenian meat treat which has even travelled into space. It goes nicely with (roasted) sauerkraut or turnip.Idrijski žlikrofi – dumplings made from dough with potato, onion and herb filling are typical miners’ dishes from Idrija. They are excellent with ‘bakalca’ a sauce made with mutton or rabbit. Štruklji – one of the most recognisable dishes. There is no universal recipe, as they are made from various types of dough and fillings.Trnič – the Slovenian cheese of love, which herdsmen on Velika Planina Plateau gave to their chosen ones.

Goldhorn is a chamois with golden horns from a fairy tale that protects the treasures of the Alps and Triglav National Park. He is as white as the mountain peaks of Slovenia. Radovljica is also genuinely sweet because of its honey and Chocolate Festival. Traditionally produced dairy products from the Soča Valley and Bohinj cheese will melt in your mouth. Štruklji are mandatory in Kobarid by the Soča River.

TASTES OF LJUBLJANA Ljubljana is a gourmets’ paradise. Everything begins at the market, which features produce from around Slovenia. On Fridays from May to October, the Open Kitchen food market takes place there, with freshly prepared delicacies available from stalls. Typical Ljubljana dishes are marked on restaurant menus marked as ‘Tastes of Ljubljana’. The Slovenian cheese of love called Trnič from Kamnik makes a lovely gift.

MAGNIFICENT TREESNajevnik Lime Tree is over 700 years old; the trunk is over 10 m in diameter, the largest in Slovenia.The tallest trees in the country – the tallest deciduous trees in Slovenian forests are the Deberšek beeches, which are 42 m tall. The record holder for coniferous trees is the Sgerm spruce on the Pohorje Massif, which is 62 m tall.
