Martin initially joined the club when he went for 31 points to help the Tigers win at ECU (1/10). He now has five 30-plus point games this season and all came in the month of February.

Outside of Martin, the top two performances came on the second-to last day of the regular season as Tulane’s Caleb Daniels and UCF Aubrey Dawkins each netted 36 points. Dawkins then hit it again against No. 1/1 Duke with 32 points in the NCAA Second Round.

Corey Davis, Jr., saved his best for last as the Houston senior scored a career-high in the Cougars’ season finale win at then No. 20/19 Cincinnati.

RENOVATE AND INNOVATETwo American Athletic Conference home venues got multi-million dollar renovations this past year and open their doors to collegiate action this season. Cincinnati re-opens Fifth Third Arena to a new capacity of 12,012 while Houston returns to the newly-named Fertitta Center which will hold 7,100. Both facilities boast state-of-the-art upgrades across the board, which continue to add to two of the top home venues in region and the nation.

COACH COULD PLAY, TOOFive American Athletic Conference head coaches Johnny Dawkins (Duke), Penny Hardaway (Memphis), Dan Hurley (Seton Hall) and Tim Jankovich (Kansas State) - led their teams to the Sweet 16 or further as a student-athlete.

WELL DESERVEDTemple head coach Fran Dunphy, who is recognized as much for his charity work and community service off the court as he is for his success on the court, was named the recipient of the 2018 Dean Smith Award by the U.S. Basketball Writers Association.

The Dean Smith Award honors an individual in college basketball who embod-ies the spirit and values of Coach Smith, the long-time Hall of Fame coach at North Carolina. Coaches selected for the award are recognized for their principles of honesty and integrity, for treating all people with courtesy and respect, for accomplishments off the court, and for the impact they have made on their community and the lives of their players.

Dunphy enters his 13th and final season as Temple’s head coach. He is the winningest coach in Philadelphia Big 5 history with 557 wins over 29 seasons and ranks third on the Owls’ all-time win list with 247. The two-time American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year has guided the Owls to seven NCAA tournaments and two trips to the NIT.

WELCOME HOME PENNYThe American welcomes three new head coaches to the fold in 2018 and one gets a chance to return home. Memphis welcomes back one of its greatest ever to lace them up on its hardwood as Penny Hardaway returns home as the Tigers new head coach. After helping Memphis (then Memphis State) to the Elite Eight in 1992 he was selected No. 3 overall in the 1993 NBA Draft. Hardaway went on to become a 1996 Olympic gold medalist, 1995 NBA Finalist, four-time NBA All-Star (1995-98) and two-time All-NBA First Teamer (1995, 1996) over his 14-year NBA career.

WELCOME BACK JOEJoe Dooley returned to take over the ECU program for a second time in April after five seasons at Florida Gulf Coast. Dooley served as the Pirates’ head coach from 1995-99 and compiled 57 wins in that time. Dooley has helped Florida Gulf Coast to 20-plus win seasons in each of the past five years and postseason berths in each campaign with trips to the NCAA Tournament twice. In 30 years as an assistant and head coach, Dooley has helped lead six different programs into the postseason, accumulated 657 victories with 14 NCAA Tournament appearances and seven NIT bids.

HURLEY IN THE HOUSEIn late March, UConn announced that Dan Hurley would take over the program as its new head coach. Hurley, who comes from one of the most well-respected collegiate basketball families in the country, took URI to new heights, including back-to-back 25-win seasons and NCAA Tournament berths. He led the Rams to the 2017 Atlantic 10 Championship and helped Wagner to a 12-win turnaround in just his second season which led him to URI. Hurley was the USBWA District I Coach of the Year in 2014-15 and the Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year and USBWA District I Coach of the Year in 2017-18. A respected player in his own right, he played for P.J. Carlesimo and George Blaney at Seton Hall with 1,070 career points and three trips to the NCAA Tournament.

DRAFT DAYFor the first time in conference history The American boasted two NBA First Round picks and set a new league record with four selec-tions in the 2018 NBA Draft. Wichita State guard Landry Shamet (bottom photo) was taken by the Philadelphia 76ers with the No. 26 overall pick. Cincinnati’s Jacob Evans III joined Shamet as a fellow first rounder. He was taken No. 28 by the reigning NBA Champion Golden State Warriors. Tulane’s Melvin Frazier was selected No. 35 by the Orlando Magic, while SMU’s Shake Milton rounded out the quartet as the No. 54 overall pick by Philadelphia. The American currently boasts 12 active players on NBA rosters.

HIGH FIVEIn 2018-19, The American Athletic Conference celebrates its fifth anniversary. In just five seasons 15 teams have made the NCAA Tournament and played 27 March Madness games. The League also boasts a National Championship (UConn, 2014), 11 NBA Draft picks and numerous top-25 nonconference victories. The American has powered up in just half a decade and is primed to do even more in the next five years.
