Tout is a mobile video and social media platformfor smartphones. It allows for the easy shooting,

editing and sharing of short videos (aka Touts)using a mobile app. It is similar to Twitter in thatit relies on hashtags and usernames and can be

    easily integrated with other platforms.

Tout vastly increases our journalists ability toproduce visual content and engage audience

    with immediacy on all platforms.

    Tout and Engagement

Use Tout to share short videos of athletic eventsand highlights. Let your audience know on socialmedia, in your preview story, and on rails andteasers that you will be Touting and invite themto Tout their participation at the event with areply to your Tout to crowdsource coverage.

Share those Touts in your own coverage byembedding the tout or several touts via a widget.

Encourage your audience to Tout their ownhighlights using a specific hashtag. Example:Student section amped for first #football game ofyear at #BrotherRice #miprepzone @miprepzone

    @theoaklandpress

(Hashtag will stream into a widget and mention willallow you to retweet it, if you deem it worthy,

with easy push on two accounts.)

    Add Tout toMiPrepZone.com

Tout 101 Touts are published in video

    players (widgets) on DFMs

    websites. They are also published

on each users individual Tout page

and the Tout landing page for each

    site publication.

Tout also can be linked to Twitter

    and Facebook accounts, allowing

    you to automatically publish Touts

    on these platforms. This is

recommended, as it will helpspread Touts across the social

web. These options are in the

settings menu of the mobile app.

They also can be shared on other

    sites.

    What would make these better?

  • 7/30/2019 Tout Training for MIPrepZone/Sports

    10/54

    Descriptions are important

If you want your Tout to be viewed and shared, the description is important.

Make it Twitter friendly, using @mentions and #hashtags. This willhelp with search on Twitter and Tout. Also, write something thatentices people to click on it.

Whats better than Kennett vs Avon Grove:

#Kennett #football team takes on arch rival #AvonGrove in#miprepzone action. Tout your favorite highlight using#miprepzone.

#Football action heats up as favorite #Kennett takes on

    #AvonGrove with coaches @coachGsmith @BenJones2 leading theteams #miprepzone

Whats better than More from Michigan-CMU postgame presser:

    #Michigan #football vs. @CMUniversity postgame presser @umich

    Narration is important

Narrate your Tout, share information, set the scene, just as you would with longer-form video.

Shoot the opening scene, pause and shoot more, pauseagain and shoot more.

Dave Pemberton (like the action, need narration):http://www.tout.com/m/ssqpi7

Jason Schmitt (good example with narration):

    Numbers matter

Touts All Views App Views Widget Views

ReTouts appear to register as Touts and you get credit for

views from your share. Make it a habit to reTout and share

on Twitter others work. Widgets are key. Four Toutsgot 360 views, with 303 coming from a widget, in comparison

my 43 Toutsgot 301 views -- still good numbers, but a widget

    would have helped tremendously.

Key: follow a lot of people

    Most Touts will appear without

    7. Shooting B-Roll:

    Wide, medium & tight shots

    Wide shots set the scene

and help viewers establisha sense of place

    Medium shots are the

most typical shots invideo, which is why we

    have to remember

    Tight shots capture the

color and detail in yourstory. They transport
