    BACKGROUND

On the 18th July, 2012 The Hon Martin Dixon, Minister for Education announced a New

high school to bring Coburg community together [See appendix 1]. Mr Dixon said that

Coburg Senior High School (CSHS) will expand to include Years 7-9 in 2015.

He said the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development would work

closely with the school and the local community to ensure the expanded school meets

the needs of the local community.

This is a big undertaking and I have asked the Department to begin consulting with the

school and community to map out what the new school will look like.

In term 3, 2012 the High School for Coburg (HSC) Working Group were invited to

nominate two members to join a sub-committee of the Coburg Senior High School

Governing Board CSHS Community Consultation Sub-Committee. In preparation forthe committees eventual rst meeting in late December, HSC undertook to do a piece of

simple community research to assist the consultation process.

    Aim:

To get a quick snapshot of what the local community would like their local 7-12 high

    school to be like.

To enable Minister Dixons request that the Department consult with the community

to map out what the new school will look like.

    METHODOLOGY

An online survey predominantly to ask the question How would you like the 7-12

high school in Coburg to be? The question was purposefully open-ended.

Respondents were also asked where they live and, if their children were likely to at-

tend the expanded school, how many and when.

The survey was promoted predominantly via social media.

The survey was live online from 30 November 2012 until 18 March 2013 but the 83

percent of responses came in during the rst two weeks of December (221 of 267).

    EXECUTIVE SUMMARY

    Respondents:

    267 respondents in total,

providing a total of 533 potential future students of the expanded CSHS.

    Questions and Responses

    1. Would any of your children be likely to attend the 7-12 Coburg High in the future?

    [see chart page 5]

    79% of respondents answered Yes.

    19% answered Maybe

    2% answered No.

    2. If yes/maybe please indicate number of children starting year 7 in which year? [see

    graph page 6]

Numbers consistently increased from 42 children starting in 2015 to 71 starting

    year 7.

This was followed by a further 150 who would start year 7 from 2020 onwards.

This shows a likely healthy future for the expanded school in terms of enrolmentsas the results indicate demand will not only continue but increase over time.

    3. Which suburb do you live in? [see graph page 7]

not surprisingly, 70% of respondents answered that they live in the 3058 suburbs

of Coburg. These were Coburg (138), Coburg North (41), Merlynston (4), Coburg

West (1) and Coburg East (3).

There was 19% from the Darebin suburbs of Preston (19), Preston West (13),

    Reservoir (15) and Thornbury (3).

6% from Pascoe Vale (11) plus Pascoe Vale South (5).

    4. How would you like the 7-12 high school in Coburg to be? (Please note this is an

intentionally open-ended question, feel free to comment on any aspect of a high

    school.) [page 8]

The HSC Working Party would like to commend the survey respondents for their

thoughtful and considered answers to this important question.

We are proud to be part of this community and are condent the expanded CoburgSenior High School our local high school, will reect all the richness that was evident in

    the survey responses.

Note: Ideally this report would include a full text analysis of the survey responses to elicit

the exact number of respondents mentioning the key themes that came through however

this is beyond the means of the High School for Coburg (HSC) working party at this time.

We are optimistic that resources may be garnered to give the wonderful responses due

credit in the form of a report incorporating text analysis and so in the meantime we will

    call this an Interim Report.

What follows then, is a summary of key themes coming through in the responses there is

always the risk that this list is subjective so we include all the wonderful responses in full

so that they can speak for themselves. [page 8]

Q1. How would you like the 7-12 high school in Coburg to be?(Please note this is an intentionally open ended question, feel free to comment on any aspect of a highschool.)

1 A safe school where strong leadership successfully manages issues ofbullying & inclusiveness as well as a focus on academic success. A 'house'system that involves students across the grades/ages is successful inhelping combating bullying as a student makes friends across all grades/age

groups. Student mentors to help assist student issues, and/or amentoring/buddy system to again assist in bullying andinclusiveness/academic focus and achievement. Interhouse sports ANDacademic competitions to bring house-pride to both physical & intellectualpursuits. How about an 'agreement' between school and parents aboutrights AND responsibilities of both parties so school management issupported when dealing with issues such as bullying etc & help instil a senseof appreciation to attend Coburg High instead of just a feeling of entitlement& potential lack of respect & support towards the school, staff, other studentsetc.

    Mar 18, 2013 8:10 PM

2 The High school in Coburg should be of a high standard educational facility. It should be comparable to any good high school in the area, Also a uniform

should be worn. Students should be proud to attend the school.

    Mar 12, 2013 9:02 AM

3 Violence free, fee free, community connected, approachable, friendly, open, well resourced

    Mar 4, 2013 6:56 PM

4 Academically focused. Safe & friendly learning environment. Communityfocused and to lead the way in education in the north

    Feb 28, 2013 3:17 AM

5 Bright, fairly academic, offering an alternative to at least 2 or 3 other northernhigh schools (leaving out NHS and Viewbank) that seem to have pretty lowaspiration for their students, reflective of the changing demographic which Iwould describe as increasingly 'educated left'.

    Feb 13, 2013 6:48 PM

6 Open plan, interesting buildings that keep kids occupied & interested, greatgrounds with lots of space for vegie patches and chances to learn about theenvironment. It would be great if it had a social conscience and to be taughtsustainable values. Good tolerance values and inclusiveness of all students.Environmental, Art and Academic subjects would be ideal.

    Feb 11, 2013 10:50 PM

    7 Top quality education Feb 11, 2013 12:29 PM

8 Facilitated with good technology access for all students without parentsforking out extra fees. Healthy canteen food options. A strong emphasis onall creative arts subjects. A good sporting program with opportunities forstudents to compete both locally, nationally and internationally.

    Feb 11, 2013 3:48 AM

9 Male and female students Compulsory formal uniform Feb 11, 2013 12:47 AM

10 Open entry with high acedemic expectation School uniform at least until Year10

11 Hope it will equip my three children for university studies Feb 10, 2013 11:15 PM

12 Technology focussed, with sporting facilities. An open and respectfulenvironment between students and teachers.

    Feb 10, 2013 7:45 PM

13 I would like a school that embraces the diversity of the community (includingethnic, religious, socio-economic but also sexual and gender diversity). Iwould like the school to aim for the highest possible standards for children

with academic aspirations. I would like a school that sees education in morethan one LOTE as essential, as well as music education.

14 modern, high achieving, academically orientated Feb 10, 2013 5:40 PM

15 A top quality school offering broad based education to our community Feb 10, 2013 2:16 PM

16 an environment where - the development of the 'whole child' is supportedand valued - it's seen as cool to achieve highly in academic, sporting, artisticand/or entrepreneurial pursuits - learning is personalised for all students andopportunities for extension and remediation are commonplace - there arestrong relationships between teachers and students and parents - students'learning in the community (eg part time work, internships, volunteer work) isvalued by the school, and the connections between the school and theCoburg and wider Melbourne community are strong - 'soft skills' such asteamwork, organisation and leadership are learned. - there is a culture oflearning (not wagging or cramming) in the school - there are no dated

preconceptions about how the school should be organised/designed, in orderto effectively facilitate these goals. Classes and classrooms may not be thebest sub-units for the school. Advisory groups within learning communitieswould probably be better.

    Feb 10, 2013 4:52 AM

17 strong academic focus. good music, spots & art/performing arts programs.environment of tolerance and inclusiveness.

    Feb 9, 2013 7:36 PM

18 We are looking for a school that has a great parent community. We wouldlike lots of opportunities for our children, both educational and socially. Weare hoping that the music program expands to more instruments. We want asmooth transition from the primary school and up. I don't know that havingopen classrooms right away would be beneficial but over the years working

up to students being more in control of their education.

    Feb 9, 2013 7:25 PM

19 As a parent from Coburg Primary, we are really proud of the music programat coburg primary, would be great to know that the same kind of qualitymusic program would be offered at coburg high.

    Feb 9, 2013 6:50 PM

20 new, energetic teaching and support staff, inclusive, aiming for highachedemic achievement with an understanding of a well rounded educationand the support needs of today's students.

    Feb 6, 2013 3:10 AM

21 One that could support the number of families looking for high qualityeducation for their children. One that would offer similar curriculum to that ofNorthcote high school.

    Feb 3, 2013 12:40 PM

22 A regular government school. Not experimental. The school needs to caterfor not only current students but students in the future.

    Feb 1, 2013 3:44 PM

23 - Zoning - we need to be able to send our kids there, so set the zoneaccordingly - Technology Savvy - use the latest IT tools/techniques to aidlearning - International baccalaureate option - Multicultural courses includinga board range of academic religious studies - promoting cultural awarenessand values - LOTE including mandarin/cantonese and spanish - languagesthat are relevant to the modern world - Open, relaxed culture - basic, attractive uniform, first name teachers, but emphasis on excellence (highachievement)

Q1. How would you like the 7-12 high school in Coburg to be?(Please note this is an intentionally open ended question, feel free to comment on any aspect of a highschool.)

24 Great facilities for students, academic, arts, technology To be able to caterfor students with higher learning capability Students to be happy at theschool Strong learning culture Committed teachers Opportunities forstudents to try extra curricular activities

    Jan 31, 2013 3:01 AM

25 Compulsary and elective subjects. Informal classrooms using latesttechnology. Small class sizes. Landscaped gardens with quiet areas...

    Jan 31, 2013 2:10 AM

26 I would like the school to have a broad curriculum including arts andlanguages, lots of opportunities for community and family involvement, akitchen garden, a loose uniform policy so kids can still express their ownidentities, and values and a vision that the students and parents are involvedin creating.

    Jan 31, 2013 1:15 AM

27 Ideally, I would like Coburg Junior High to prepare students intellectually aswell as academically as well as possible for a highly selective global market. In this context I would welcome it if the school would provide thorough

language training (e.g. Mandarin and German to speak to two importantmarkets). Apart from that I would want the school to provide a nurturingenvironment where children can also equally pursue their interests in thearts, music and physical education. My expectation would be that the highschool would rather target the upper end of achievement (such as, forexample University High and Melbourne High/Mac Robertson High).

    Jan 29, 2013 7:14 PM

28 Creative bullyfree environment that supports children of different culturalbackgrounds in the area. Strong in music and specialising in a few otherareas of study.

    Jan 29, 2013 3:40 AM

29 I think developing an inclusive, tolerant and respectful school culture is themost important aspect of the new High School. Young people cannot learn

effectively in an environment where this is not the case. In particular, I wouldlike to see great emphasis on gender equality. I think young people today arerelentlessly exposed to images and messages which objectify their bodies -particularly those of girls and young women - and this often spills over intothe school environment (sexualised bullying, verbal abuse, 'sexting'). I wouldlike to see a school culture that has women in leadership roles (both as staffand students) and encourages both young women and men to seethemselves not simply in bodily terms, but as individuals with diverse skills, interests, goals and challenges.

    Jan 28, 2013 4:45 PM

30 Formal school with a focus on academic achievement. Jan 26, 2013 3:09 PM

31 My child currently attends Brunswick East primary, which is a wonderful

progressive school experience for us, I would like the opportunity for her toattend a like minded high school, that is based in child led learning. I wouldalso like the the school to offer the International Baccalaureate. I would likea school diverse in languages, the arts and which sees science andtechnology as an integral part of all learning disciplines, encouraging creativethinking and philosophical critical thinking. One that creates a hub for thecommunity and incorporates young people into the community in many waysso they feel an important part of society and foster respect and responsibilitytheir community members.

    Jan 26, 2013 2:42 PM

32 A safe, challenging and caring invironment that will support our childrens'learning in all areas of the curricullum.

33 Academic focus, but with an appropriate mix of art, music and sport.Supportive with a zero tolerance for bullying. Should promote theinvolvement of parents and have a very strong community focus. The schoolshould also have good links with their schools in the area - I.e complement,

not compete with Brunswick secondary college, northcote high school etc.Consideration should also be given to a limited amount of single sex classes(e.g Mathis) if there are academic benefits from this

    Jan 2, 2013 9:44 PM

34 A beacon of quality in both the teaching and the school environment. To setan example that creates pride in the teaching staff and a source ofinspiration for all prospective students.

35 progressive, using restorative practices opportunities in music music, arts, sport and science linked to community opportunities for excellence for allstudents - gifted and struggling mix of male and female teachers

    Jan 2, 2013 4:46 AM

36 Modern, co-ed, small class sizes, additional programs for gifted students,

additional programs for students with additional learning needs, strongoutdoor program focus, technologies in high use (iPads,electronic/interactive whiteboards), student-led learning.

37 Open entry and well resourced Dec 31, 2012 5:53 AM

38 Incorporation of multimedia is essential. Use of computers, video, audio, games in everyday lessons. I would much prefer a uniform. Recognition andaccommodation of different learning styles is important. Get the cultureestablished before worrying about establishing an accelerated learningprogram. Please if at all possible don't neglect the non academic subjects. The opportunity to develop leadership skills, team work.

40 Resemble princes hill in structure and ethos, allow the students a voice andresponsibility. No set type of person that the school is attempting to mould.Valuing creativity and Academic excellence equally. A school that recognisesall the different cultures of the children with equal respect and celebratesdiversity actively.

    Dec 21, 2012 8:05 PM

41 Diversity that reflects the local community. Community and environmentallyminded. A balance of opportunities that include academic, artistic andsporting opportunities.

    Dec 18, 2012 11:21 PM

42 Not sure I have the knowledge to answer this yet. It will be many yearsbefore my kids would be at high school but I am so pleased that thecommunity has had the success in having this high school extended toinclude 7-10. Well done!

    Dec 17, 2012 7:18 PM

43 Strong focus on academic curriculum. Compulsory School uniform. Gooddiscipline and anti-bullying initiatives. School curriculum projects whichaugment the core academic program by encouraging students to engagewith the world around them. Strong science and language program's (asian& european). For students who struggle with academic program, there shouldbe good educational pathways which support them to pursue othervocational avenues.

I have now become a ratepayer in Moreland, and have moved into a neighbourhood in North Coburgbecoming chockers with young families; I also have great nieces andnephews in the area who will very probably be attending Coburg High; As amember of the community with family members and neighbours who will be

attending the school, I hope it becomes a dynamic, inclusive and diverselearning environment for the young people of the area - as well as anaccessible space for a whole range of community activities _ i'd like it tobecome a leader in the appropriate use of a local educational facility for thecommunity outside ( and inside ! ) of school hours.

their school community. A school that has a beautiful environment with asmany eco features as possible. A schoo that promotes skills such as homeeconomics, sewing, woodwork, metal craft, pottery, phys ed., dance, concerts and the healthy competition and participation in interschool sports.

A playground of sorts. Children transition from primary school where theyhave the option to play on out door equipment, into high school and loose alltheir physical skill and development.

55 Keen to keep the emphasis on teaching digital natives, with cutting edge useof technology. A medium size school, all rounded with strong academic foucsbut also broad to suit non academic as well, good visual arts and music.Prefer no uniform, or comftorble, not impressed by blazers. Perhaps the 10-12s could have no uniform, keep the Senior feel for that group. Alsolanguages, Spanish and an Asian language would be nice.

    66 a one-size-fits-all regular open-entry high school ie not a select entry school Dec 9, 2012 3:44 PM

    Dec 9, 2012 4:11 AM

68 Modern, cutting edge, supportive, self esteem building, caring. Focus on highstandard of output. To be a school that you wish you were zoned to.

    Dec 9, 2012 3:57 AM

69 A school that reflects the area. A school that will allow students to developinto their best. A school where the environment, community and the arts isvalued and explored. I would like a school where students will not be I.Treliant but will be able to follow their own path ways.

    Dec 9, 2012 3:34 AM

70 I think it would be good to keep the independent learning feel of the seniorcampus in tact, and have a kinda of 'junior' campus (eg. buildings) in theneighbouring paddock.

    Dec 9, 2012 2:34 AM

71 A big focus on achieving high academic results which rival many of the stateschools in the eastern suburbs traditionally referred to as upper classsuburbs. Coburg and its neighbouring suburbs deserve to be recognised asone of the best in the state.

    Dec 9, 2012 1:54 AM

72 Inclusive, innovative, creative, respectful, compassionate. To embrace theindividual and recognise one size does not fit all!

    Dec 9, 2012 1:36 AM

73 Creativity & imagination magnified! A place where students feel safe toexplore, learn & create. A nurturing, highly creative & 'green' environment.Parent involvement in all aspects of school life.

    Dec 8, 2012 11:57 PM

74 I have a 16yr old son, a 12yr old son and a 3yr old son. Both my oldest sons

have done all their primary school years in Coburg. The wonderful thingabout most of the primary schools in Coburg is their focus on the communityand the environment. It would be lovely if this was maintained in a HighSchool for Coburg. My oldest son is starting next year at Coburg Senior HighSchool and from what i have felt so far, their way of teaching is also veryrefreshing. Good luck with everything.

    Dec 8, 2012 10:42 PM

75 Yes - don't understand why the coburg senior school wasnt reopened as ayear 7 school and slowly extra years added in the first place!

    Dec 8, 2012 10:37 PM

76 I think the school needs an area of focus to excel in (i.e. music/sport) in orderto attract high quality teachers.

77 a mix of cultural focus reflecting the demographics of the area, andawareness/application of environmental sustainability reflecting the locationnext to merri creek (opportunity to link with friends of merri creek, merri creekmanagement committee etc)

    Dec 7, 2012 2:23 AM

78 I would like the philosophy and uniqueness of the Senior School to continue& follow on and trickle down from year 12 to year 7. l would like the school tooffer both a high quality IT proramme and also an oustanding performing artsprogramme so it caters to families who have 1 of each child as ldo...Discipline and social skills are also very important...

Q1. How would you like the 7-12 high school in Coburg to be?(Please note this is an intentionally open ended question, feel free to comment on any aspect of a highschool.)

80 I would like to see flexible learning opportunities to cater for a range oflearning styles and abilities. Also a pastoral care model where 'homegroups' are across ages engendering more inclusiveness and kids ofdifferent year levels engaging with each other. I would also like to see active

community engagement, where the kids work on community development /enhancement projects locally and for the older ones potentially nationally orinternationally.

    Dec 6, 2012 7:53 PM

81 I would like it to be an inclusive, creative, positive learning environmentwhere differences are celebrated and where all children are givenopportunities to reach their potential.

    Dec 6, 2012 5:26 PM

82 Friendly, high quality education, arabic language Dec 6, 2012 4:06 PM

83 That it be a school developed in consultation and with involvement from thecommunity, so great question! Personally, my child attends a state primaryschool with a Steiner stream and I love the diversity and creativity of the

curriculum. It also has a strong focus on indigenous studies and culture, sowould love for this to deepen at a high school level. Also, for the arts to beintegrated into the curriculum as it brings so much richness to the moretraditionally academic subjects. Integration of the curriculum as a whole, tobe conscious of the links between disciplines and the history of theirdevelopment across time, seems to be a really valuable way of learning thatcontextualises why and how we learn what we learn today.

    Dec 6, 2012 3:56 PM

I'm delighted there's anothr local high school for us to choose from.

93 Have a strong community spirit including inter-year activities and interaction.Be of a smallish size 400 - 500 students. Encourage free thinking. Have an

arts and music element to it. Offer an environment that encourages self -confidence in students. Offer courses in practical skills - making things.Encourage academic excellence. Provide inspirational teachers andmentors.

94 not an experimental, open learning format welcoming and inclusive part ofthe local community before and after school hours the new 7 to 9 yearsembraced by the teachers and staff at the school

    Dec 5, 2012 3:09 AM

95 I would like support it's students to be the best they can be. It should alsonot compromise on an acceptable level of behaviour (which is what caused itto be reduced from a full high school in the past)

    Dec 5, 2012 2:05 AM

99 I would love to see coburg high school represent all that is great about livingin coburg. Friendliness, respect and a community that embraces our

beautiful mixture of people from all backgrounds and ages. I would like tosee the school well equipped in music, theater arts and visual art. I wouldalso like the school to have a strong science program with a focus onsustainability and environmental awareness.

100 It would be excellent to have a Secondary college that offers extensivelylearning opportunity in a variety of subjects suchs as; Arts, music, environment studies, business studies, diverse sports, horticulture etc. Iwould also like to see studies on bullying & self defence. The opportunity forstudents to also study abroad for 3,6,12 months would also beadvantageous. As well as unique camp opportunities.

    Dec 4, 2012 6:55 PM

    101 Where to begin?! Supportive and encouraging; Local community focused;

High academic standards, using national or internationalstandards/exams/qualifications; and obviously good facilities (fundingpermitting of course!); Uniform essential.

105 Traditional, academically focussed with a broad curriculum that includes arange of arts and a strong LOTE program.

107 Continuing 21st Century Education philosophy. Some Primary Schools inthe area already have established netbook programs, minimal textbook, withtechnology being used in various ways as educational tools (eg. see PascoeVale Primary School). So certainly achievable in the 7-9 stream. This couldthen extend on the current program being currently offered at Coburg SH,without making major changes to building infrastructure and teachingpedagogy. It would also give the school a unique flavour Being so well

positioned, it isn't inconceivable that the school develop stronger sportingand arts programs. The Town Hall, close sporting facilities and localattractions, make it ideally situated.

    Dec 4, 2012 12:44 PM

109 A school with high academic standards and a good range of subjects forstudents to choose from as well as extra circular activities available

    Dec 4, 2012 4:05 AM

110 A centre for high quality education with a strong emphasis on respect forothers. A wide ranging curriculum that gives the students the opportunity tochance to study in areas of their choice would be important.

    Dec 4, 2012 3:56 AM

111 Most i portantly, a school with a strong focus on academic achievement(such as Uni High) Dec 4, 2012 3:36 AM

112 Quality education with a wide range of subjects to offer, a uniform so lesscompetition with clothing, accelarated stream, plenty of sport

    Dec 4, 2012 3:20 AM

113 1.Uniform of ordinary clothing items that you can buy at Target, KMart,Woolworths etc, ie windcheater, tracky pants, shorts, trousers. ie NOTexpensive uniform items. 2. Multi-age interest groupings. 3. Diversepopulation. 4. Free. 5. Not too big..... 6. Involve the community, ie communityclasses, be a community resource, gain community skills input, offer kidsinvolved in broarder community activities. 7. Broad based Arts andTechnology curriculum. .... I could go on.

    Dec 4, 2012 3:10 AM

114 Structured but open minded. Inclusive. Have a uniform or dress code (so thatan expensive uniform is not compulsory. e.g. Uniform colours and styles.)Have a broad focus from staff - i.e. not just be a sporty school or an artyschool - this will probably evolve naturally according to the demographic.

    Dec 3, 2012 10:52 PM

124 I would like it to be a government funded, non religious school with a focuson science, maths, art and literature.

    Dec 3, 2012 8:19 PM

    125 Quality education Dec 3, 2012 8:15 PM

126 A creative and inspiring place to learn. I think Coburg is incredibly diverseand artistic and I think it would be great to place importance on theseaspects.

    Dec 3, 2012 8:14 PM

127 My recent exposure to high schools is limited but I tend to hear a fair bitabout the arts and culture but very little about school sport. Arts and cultureare important and equally, if not more so, is physical activity. School shouldnot be too big - ideally less than 700 students.

    Dec 3, 2012 7:57 PM

128 Coburg High School needs to be a well rounded school that will cater for theneeds of the children in an academic, artistic, and physical nature. I wouldexpect the school to focus on the individual's needs, and provide the correcttools so they can strive and achieve their best for the future.

    Dec 3, 2012 7:52 PM

129 Would like it to offer a broad curriculum (arts, sciences, humanities)supporting student interests and learning at all levels. With a strong focus onencouraging students to pursue higher learning post school. Incorporating aselective stream such as Brunswick Secondary and Northcote High havecould help to facilitate that.

    Dec 3, 2012 7:46 PM

131 A focus on community and environment, and definately not an "Apple"sponsored school where every student has a tablet and it is all about IT. Lifeis about a lot more than IT.

    Dec 3, 2012 7:19 PM

Languages.Uniform. Music.Academic but also VCAL/VET/ school basedapprenticeships.. Build on existing community strengths. Supportive ofteachers.

    Dec 3, 2012 6:52 PM

134 A school culture of diversity and openness is important for our family. Dec 3, 2012 6:38 PM

135 No uniform please! Student centred learning. Needs to cater for introvertedchildren as well as extroverted children. Introverted children need to have

individual tasks as well as group learning and also need areas where theycan escape (for a time) from big noisy learning environments. How wellCSHS manages the open plan learning environments in this regard could bea deal maker or breaker for us. Good range of subjects including humanitiesand the arts. A language program would be good too. Would also like to seePCs used as well as Macs. In a modern digital environment, children need tobe fluent in both.

    Dec 3, 2012 5:25 PM

136 It is important to me that the school attracts great teachers and staff that aretreated with respect and given support so that they stay with the school for along time.

    Dec 3, 2012 4:53 PM

137 Not too big. Strong maths and science. Friendly. Dec 3, 2012 4:28 PM

138 I would like the school to offer a wide curriculum with special attention to thearts and to science and technology. Asian languages should be offered aswell as some history and humanities subjects that teach about our regionand are not northern hemisphere centric. I also think that it is important thatthe student body gets a focus on team building and community awarenessand participation in the early years to help develop a secure and happy placefor our kids to continue their formal learning.

    Dec 3, 2012 4:12 PM

number of boys and girls) as possible. Mainstream education, with a fairlyupbeat approach. Offering as wide a range of VCE and equivalent coursesas possible when the time comes. Make as many community ties as possibleso that there is a sense of ownership of the school in the wider community. This would also build on the goodwill developed during the High School forCoburg campaign.

143 environmental/sustainable design respectful, supportive but relaxedenvironment as well as usual curriculum, focus on emotional developmentand wellbeing

    Dec 3, 2012 2:48 PM

144 There should be a uniform, some sort of specialty but catering for all kids, the ones who want to continue through their education and those that wantto be tradespeople. A focus on healthy, good eating and lots of physicalactivity... Physical activity should be a part of the norm not just a subject thatpeople have to do a couple of times per week, encourage riding to school byensuring their are adequate bike facilities and possibly providing a muesli baror something for the kids that ride in.

    Dec 3, 2012 2:35 PM

145 Inclusive. It needs to provide excellent schooling with good role models.Although grades are clearly key to getting into the right Uni course for ourchildren, teaching should not be all about hitting these type of targets. OtherKPIs should be decided on and measured. The children should be allowed tobe their age! Smart kids should be challenged and those that need extra

support should get it. A big ask :) And finally, having started as a schooldriven by passionate parents, the community should continue to have thechance to be involved, and the school should put back into the community ona regular, planned basis.

    Dec 3, 2012 1:38 PM

146 On top of great academic learning, I'd like the school to teach environmental, cultural and personal respect. I'd like the school to offer severallanguages, indigenous studies, music and both visual and performing arts.Classrooms that support group activities and learning. Great IT resourcesand education coupled with general academia and hands on physicallearning. I'd like a school that is well designed - functionally, aesthetically

163 I would like the Coburg high school to be a stimulating, safe, challenging and

supportive leanring centre. I would like it to a be a quality education centre, with great teachers, and with visonary leaders who can set out an inclusivevision for the school and its community. I would like to see a broad range ofsubjects and activitgies offered (within a sustainable budget model),including if possible arts, sports, lanaguages.

    Dec 3, 2012 3:27 AM

164 At the moment Coburg Senior High School does not have a very goodreputation or very good results. I would need to see some big changesbefore I would be willing to send my children to Coburg Highschool. I thinkthere needs to be more structure, more discipline, more opportunities tostudy different subjects, more facilities such as lockable lockers for eachstudent and preferably a school uniform. I think all the above will help thechildren focus on their studies more. I have also been told that laptops are

used for 100% of the school work, no text books or handwritten notes. If thisis true, it is disappointing. Obviously it is important the children learncomputer skills but they need to learn maths and writing and spelling andgrammar using some other methods such as text books too. They shouldn't

    be completely reliant on computers.

165 Thinking curriculum, progressive curriculum, we have the opportunity to startnew programs based on current educational research. Arts, music, drama &sport.

    Dec 3, 2012 3:20 AM

166 We as a family, are very keen for there to be a quality secondary school thatrivals those in the eastern suburbs. Too often the northern suburbs areprovided with schools with poor educational and behavioural standards, substandard facilities, and under resourced staff.

167 A place of learning that focuses on encouraging students to extend beyondtheir comfort zones while ensuring a sense of inclusion and belonging. A

place with a strong sense of school, community and social obligation andawareness

168 A school that people move to Coburg so their Childrens can be educated.Offer a good range of subjects as well as extra curricular activities

    Dec 3, 2012 2:39 AM

169 My son is at Brunswick East PS in prep this year, and I love their approachto learning (based on Reggio Emilia). It is great they way they empowerchildren to decide on how they will learn. I would love for my children to havethe option to continue in this style of education once they start secondaryschool. So that is my hope: that Coburg high school will be somethingdifferent that the old-style of pedagogy and will be truely learner-centred. Iwould also like a school that has a strong sense of it's own values that

students, their families and the wider community can share and foster.Schools are so much more than just a place of education - they are placesthat create community and so Coburg high school has the potential to helpbuild the broader Coburg community. This should be equally as important aseducating it's students. I would love for Coburg high school to have a thrivingcommunity of parents and other supporters to make it a great school. Iwould like the school to have a uniform as I believe this helps to create instudents a sense of belonging, and helps students to identify with theirschool and be proud to represent it. I would like any facilities such as sportsgrounds, school halls, etc. to be available to the wider community for useoutside school hours. The school should offer curricula that caters to bothacademic and vocationally oriented students. Options such as VCAL andVET in Schools should be available, not just VCE and IB. It is an absolute

disgrace that the current government has reduced the availability of VCALand VET in Schools program through recent budget cuts.

171 I'd love to see the school pursuing an inquiry-based learning program. Myeldest child is enrolled at Brunswick East Primary School, and like many ofthe parents there I feel sorry that the style of learning experienced there ishard to find at the high-school level. Local high schools that offer someinquiry-based learning are typically very hard to get into.

VET/VCAL, and has good extracurricular programs in a variety of fields, especially the arts.

173 High quality education for a diverse local community. Dec 3, 2012 1:42 AM

174 Mobile free zone to combat students using it to record fights and answercalls while in class. It should offer at least two languages(one Asian and oneEuropean) Greek is a excellent choice because many. English words comefrom Greek. Above all we need excellent and passionate teachers who arewilling to work for the best possible outcome for each student. Open spacesand a safe and lovely environment for all to enjoy.

    Dec 3, 2012 1:40 AM

175 Friendly, with inclusive educational ethos, to do its bit for harmony, close toparkland, encouraging of every level of learning, including physical, but withextension options in English. Good music program, languages.

    Dec 3, 2012 1:32 AM

176 We believe life skills are exceptionally important in secondary school,

particularly emotional intelligence, managing emotions, meditation andrelaxation techniques, mindfulness, building self esteem, respect for others. We would also like to see teaching of a variety of religions and an awarenessof different cultures to help foster acceptance of all. Other life skills that wewould like to be taught are money management, preventative health andnutrition knowledge. We would like to see the latest techology beingincorporated in the classroom as much as possible, and would support eachstudent having an ipad. We support streaming in certain subjects, and if notstreaming, we would like students to be given the opportunity to expand theirknowledge in areas they are excelling at, so they are learning problemsolving and continually challenging themselves. We also see as importantthe opportunity for students to be involved in extra curricular programs suchas music, drama, art and sport.

    Dec 3, 2012 1:29 AM

177 I would like it to be an easy accessible school where children are stimulatedto learn and where social skills are highly valued. It is a place which does notdiscriminate nor bullies and where overbody has a fair go.

    Dec 3, 2012 12:34 AM

178 I would like it to be inclusive, representative of the community, full of eagerkids and committed teachers. I would ideally like a uniform too!

    Dec 3, 2012 12:29 AM

179 I would Coburg High school to be an excellent generalist high school. Veryhigh academic standards and excellent quality of teaching are veryimportant, but as well as that a caring, student-focussed school. I would likeit to be a traditional school in terms of uniform, attendance, and pastoralcare. I would like to see a broad range of extra activities offered, like a music

program with school choir and band, inter-school sport, an art program, aschool play, school camps and outdoor education. These things are reallyimportant for developing a strong sense of school community. I would likethe school to offer a good range of VCE subjects and some VET if there isdemand, but excellence in academic standards is key. I want this to be aschool of choice, not some alternative experiment, or have a narrow focus onone particular area. A high achievers selective entry scheme is notnecessary but would be ok.

    Dec 2, 2012 10:14 PM

180 I would obviously like the school to be focused on encouraging excellence inacademic pursuit, but in a nurturing and supportive manner. I hope theschool will have many resources available to the students so they are in noway disadvantaged or unable to excel to their full potential. I also hope there

181 def compulsory uniforms - basic uniform - polo top / jumper / hoddie / school

dress / black pants shorts (whatever color) if black shoes - black converse orrunners would be ok - school would be nice and neat but the kids can still puttheir twist to it great range of subjects not just headed to one area eg sports /arts / music / science - school for that example would be maribynong highwhich is known for its sports thats all for now but i will keep adding mythoughts when ever i find a space available as i would like this to be afantastic school as i have 3 children that will be attending thank you

    Dec 2, 2012 9:55 PM

182 Lots of community involvement, lots of variety in terms of programs offeredand types of learning to suit a variety of children. Modern and innovative

    Dec 2, 2012 9:53 PM

183 Creative, providing a variety of opportunities for all interests and all abilities, promoting a respectful culture for both students and staff that will attract and

retain quality teachers, providing comprehensive music program andchallenging opportunities for students with high aptitude

    Dec 2, 2012 9:52 PM

184 I would like a school that has a distinct identity and strives for excellence inthe academic arena but also offer outstanding opportunities for artisticpursuits and sports. There needs to be a wide range of subjects offered andthe school needs to be able to handle the mental health challenges facingyoung people in a proactive way i.e. a top notch highly responsivepsychological/mental health team needs to be installed at the school fromthe outset with an effective on and offline bullying policy. There should be anenvironmental charter and a focus on the provision of healthy food i.e. akitchen garden that is created and farmed for use in the school's canteen. There should be a well being programme, perhaps afterschool, which offers

a range of activities to enable students to achieve optimum health outcomes.Activites could include yoga, meditation etc. The school needs to achieve thebest possible outcomes with regards sustainability. Also, the school shouldmove away from archaic modes of learning and employ the use of teachingmethods, eg an inquiry based model of learning, that will better equip ourchildren for the challenges of 21st century living. The school also needs todevelop relationships/links with tertiary institutions of all descriptions so thatstudents have clear and viable choices and pathways to higher learningopportunities.

    Dec 2, 2012 9:09 PM

185 Inclusive to give kids experience of all cultures and socio economicbackground. Attentive so educational experience feels unique and focused.Innovative so the school quickly develops a reputation for putting into

practice proven, new educational methods. High standards - a unapologeticfocus on delivering academic excellence and results. Sustainable - best useof the refurbishment process to integrate 'case study' standard sustainabilitymeasures that can then be linked with education.

Q1. How would you like the 7-12 high school in Coburg to be?(Please note this is an intentionally open ended question, feel free to comment on any aspect of a highschool.)

biggest hope is that this school will be one that is admired and recognised forthe achievements of it's students. I would not be interested if it was merely aTAFE replacement. It needs to be a place of motivation and inspiration forlearning, with an aim to prepare students for further study.

203 Wide range of subjects including languages. Opportunity to use newtechnologies. Use of local surrounds including creek. Open planclassrooms. Emphasis on media and communication.

    Dec 2, 2012 6:46 PM

204 Open to special needs children; a self motivated learning environment;limited homework option, so parents can focus on parenting and engagingwith their children; collaborative learning with businesses and community,VELS option, sport, phys ed and excellence in science and maths;community engagement.

    Dec 2, 2012 6:32 PM

205 I would like to see a emergent curriculum which is based around studentsstrengths and interests. Communtiy involvement.

    Dec 2, 2012 6:27 PM

206 Strong academically - opportunities for students to extend themselves, andencouragment to build on their individual strengths. A range of specialistprograms that enable students to engage in areas in which they excel (andby this I don't mean sport - there are already a number of sports specialistschools in Victoria, and the tendency to favour sporting prowess overacademic achievement is a bit of a travesty.) Community oriented - thiswhole movement has really demonstrated the strength of our community, and it would be wonderful to see this carried through to the way the schooloperates - i.e. through programs involving students in the community,shared-use facilities etc. LOTE programs - engaging students in LOTEprograms is a great way to get them thinking of the world beyond theirimmediate surrounds as global citizens.

    Dec 2, 2012 6:24 PM

207 I would like it to have a good music and drama program Dec 2, 2012 6:23 PM

208 Given plans for Coburg 2020, I think they key would be to provide asecondary school in an urban area with enough grounds to accommodatesports, recreational areas for students and adequate trees and plant life.

    Dec 2, 2012 6:19 PM

209 Non-uniform! A space for inquisitorial skills, life skills and respect for youngpeople. I'd like to see good programs for stimulating and extending talentedkids too, eg multi-ageing and acceleration.

    Dec 2, 2012 6:14 PM

210 We would like this high school to be a local school, with mostly children fromthe area. We would like to see it take on all children regardless of ability (ie.

not to pick the best). We would like it to be a major part of the Coburgcommunity with high amounts of parent participation and events/functionsthat parents can attend (and organise as a parent group).

    Dec 2, 2012 6:00 PM

211 A school that offers a wide variety of subjects to cover the needs/interests ofall children. One that sees the Arts/creative subjects as EQUALLY asimportant as standard core studies. A school that acknowledges andsupports children with additional learning needs. Teaching staff that have agenuine love of teaching who are supportive and non judgemental of theirstudents.

215 As my boys are now in Strathmore SC I probably won,t need to move them. However what I would like to see in the new High School is; 1. CompulsorySchool uniform 2. Following successful other school models rather thantrying to be radically different.

    Dec 2, 2012 5:32 PM

216 A good mix of academic, sports, arts and music. Small classes, community -minded with emphasis on social justice

218 Enthusiastic teachers; links to facilities, community projects and businessesso there are lots of hands on experience opportunities for students. Dec 2, 2012 5:26 PM

219 A school where students feel safe and able to thrive. Good community feeland creative use of technology and spaces. I like the way the campus feels abit like a college now - where students are treated as adults, it would begood if some of this could continue for the younger years.

Would love to see a program that offers music and the arts equallywith sport, and to continue focus on science and technology. Celebratecultural diversity, and cater for educational needs of kids on all levels - fromthose needing a bit of extra, targeted support, to those who need extensionand challenge.

    Dec 2, 2012 3:36 PM

237 I would like a school that fosters diversity, that nutures the kid's individual

interests and strengths, and doesn't try to focus on too much rote learning. Iwould like to see arts, music, literature, languages and history as strong afocus as maths and sport. I would like the school initiate activities thatencourage participation in the local communities. A school that is supportiveof all kids.

    Dec 2, 2012 2:56 PM

243 Led by a community minded principal that attracts and retains progressive

staff. Engaged with a politically active council and pfa that is accountable tothe community. A pfa that represents more than just the educated whites thatit will likely be comprised of. A culture which values and supports theaspirations and work of the teachers, developing active relationships. Aneffective, transparent and really accessible system for documenting andarchiving school policy, politics and other matters

251 A school that values and promotes academic excellence as well as a holisticapproach to education. Plenty of extra curricular activities and opportunitiesto develop different creative, sporting and other talents.

252 Don't have any particular thoughts at this stage. Dec 2, 2012 12:30 PM

253 A high school that reflects the local area - diverse, multi-lingual andinnovative. Strong arts program, music, languages, performing arts but alsoacademic.

254 I would like to see a school that offers main stream subjects and alsoencourages participation in other subjects such as music and the arts.Wearing of a School uniform I think is important.

256 A great state school which fosters excellence in education and the Arts.

257 To the standard of exceptional & quality education that our children deserve.Modeling off existing, good practicing Secondary schools-such asStrathmore Secondary or Buckley Park Secondary College.

258 Supported by the community - this is only going to work if we send our kidsthere! If we make the commitment it will work! I'm getting frustrated bypeople saying I'll only send my kids there if its good or I'm not sure if it will beestablished enough for my kids - well if we do not use it we will lose it! if wemake the commitment to it how can it fail? It ll fail if it hasn't got the studentnumbers!

259 Normal. Not elitist. I went to Melbourne High - it's a great school, but I don'tneed another Melbourne High in my suburb. I just want a normal entry highschool near my house. I want more focus on academic achievement than onsporting achievement. I don't want either to be pursued to the ends of theearth.

260 I would like it to be progressive, sustainable, bully-proofed and inviting...responsive and inclusive of community and education partners. I'd like it tolose the current reputation of being mostly for kids who slip through thecracks. I want it to be roomy with lots of green space. I'd like to see theschool garden program expanded. I'd like the school to be aware ofborderline special needs, especially Aspergers and to have lots of extra-curicular activities which stimulate and support kids pursuing creative

endeavors, including technical developments and scientificinnovations/explorations. I'd like to see lots of free choice among thecurriculum with clear pathways for further university &/or vocational studies.I'd like for the staff to be top-notch, sensitive and intuitive about youngpeople's needs as well as well informed about the latest practices in highschool education. I'd like to see a proactive approach to professionaldevelopment and a creative and inspired ability to pursue and recievefunding from diverse sources and partnerships to ensure all of the above. I'dlike to see the community actively involved and accepted in the developmentof the school in its early days and throughout it's development.

261 As it is a largely blank slate, I would like to see a "best practice" progressivehigh school focussing on excellence

    Dec 2, 2012 5:25 AM

262 Open to people on the borders of Moreland Dec 2, 2012 4:12 AM

263 Inclusive with plenty of involvement from parents Dec 2, 2012 4:01 AM

264 An educationally and socially progressive school with strong communitylinks. Strong focus on academic opportunities including science, communityand the arts. Preferrably with a uniform for the Junior School.

    Dec 1, 2012 3:05 AM

265 More mainstream and a standard state high school so as to cater for 1000children.
