TOWARDS BYOD 2018
WOODLANDS PRIMARY SCHOOL
A WORLD OF OPPORTUNITY THROUGH THE POWER OF LEARNING
WHAT IS 1 TO 1 /BYOD PROGRAM?
• 1 to 1 means every student has there own device all the time.
• BYOD stands for “Bring your own device”
• Parents are requested to supply devices for their own children
WHAT ARE SOME OF THE BENEFITS?
1. Students become familiar and comfortable using their own technology so they can
focus on actually learning rather than learning how to use the device. 2. With BYOD students can potentially continue learning outside of schools hours.
3. Gives the students greater access to purposeful use, not restricted by timetables and
sharing.
4. Students love technology so BYOD engages students and creates enthusiasm and
excitement about learning.
5. Teachers, students and parents can be more connected by sharing learning regularly
through the device.
6. BYOD allows more opportunities for more personalized learning where students can
excel at their own pace.
7. Students take control of ensuring that their device is working, instilling a sense of
responsibility.
8. It allows the school to focus spending on teacher professional learning and school
infrastructure.
WESTERN AUSTRALIAN CURRICULUM
• “Develop ICT capability as they learn to use ICT effectively and
appropriately to access, create and communicate information and ideas, solve
problems and work collaboratively in all learning areas at school, and in their
lives beyond school…making the most of the digital technologies available to
them…”
HOW DOES A 1:1 PROGRAM SUPPORT OUR BUSINESS PLAN? Key Focus Area One: Maximizing educational achievements and opportunities for all
• Develop an inclusive environment that provides accessible, engaging and challenging learning through agreed lesson design structures and
differentiated instruction.
• Acknowledge excellence and extend achievement and progress by developing analytical, evaluative and creative thinking.
• Continue implementation of the Western Australian Curriculum and STEM.

Key Focus Area Two: Improving Emotional Intelligence
• Provide opportunities for students to develop and display leadership.
• Students and staff demonstrate sustainable practices
Key Focus Area Three: Strengthening the partnership between home, school and the community
• Improve school communication as the foundation to maintaining positive home, school and community partnerships and to help parents
understand the language of learning.
• Maximise funding opportunities as well as parent, staff and student involvement in providing quality facilities and an engaging learning
environment
• Provide opportunities for the School Board, P&C and other parent committees to work collaboratively to support the implementation of
school planning.

WHY INTRODUCE BYOD NOW? • New Digital Technology committee formed in Feb.
• Wifi upgraded at the end of 2016
• New technical support company, Solution IT
• Zulu Device Management is now in place
• New process for selection of apps/software
WHY INTRODUCE BYOD NOW? • Preparation for NAPLAN Online, (for current year 1 students NAPLAN will be
online when they are in year 3 in 2019)
NAPLAN Online requires students to confidently use a computer or device in at least seven
ways. These interactions may change as new technologies become available.
1. Locate and select an answer
2. Type an answer
3. Read the screen and navigate web pages
4. Manipulate objects on screen
5. Read and comprehend digital texts
6. Plan and compose text using word processing
7. Listen using a headset
STATE TRIAL CRITICAL FACTORS
• focus on teachers, not the device;
• start small and grow over time
• provide teachers with the chosen device;
• sufficient professional learning including designated mentors/coaches;
• use SAMR to target authentic learning; and
• careful use and evaluation of software/apps; technical support.
WHERE SHOULD WE START?
• Year 2, 2018
• Staff have been surveyed indicating
-that 8 teachers feel confident to teach a class with 1:1 devices
-start one year level.
BYOD implementation committee consisting of staff members, parents and
community members, including those who have expertise in cyber safety,
physical and mental wellbeing relating to ICT.
WHY START HERE?
• By choosing year 2 students, we can:
• Maximise the life of the device (3-4 years for an iPad, so an iPad purchased for year 2
should see them through to the end of primary school)
• Developing student responsibility to care for the devices
• Developing teacher competency to implement the 1:1 program
• Starting in low enough year level to allow time to develop students’ skills in preparation
for NAPLAN online.
WHY CHOOSE IPADS?
ICT skills can be developed on any device. The benefits of iPads over other devices
include:
• Ease of use and management
• Availability to students – consideration will be given so that families could potentially
opt to use their existing devices (providing they meet spec), rather than purchasing
new ones
• There is greater availabilty of support for iPads (from Apple and other schools)
• Durability (with cases), ease of repair/replacement/substitution with backup devices
WHAT ARE WE DOING TO ADDRESS PARENTS’ CONCERNS?
Two main concerns which are currently being investigated:
• Insurance and safe storage of devices.
• Cyber-safety
We have established partnerships with:
• Jordan Foster, ySafe
• Jessica Hill, Cyberzone
Consideration for future workshops (for parents, teachers and students) to be
held as required.
HOW DOES BYOD ENHANCE OUR TEACHING AND LEARNING?
Key Focus Area One: Maximizing educational achievements and opportunities for all • Develop an inclusive environment that provides accessible, engaging and challenging learning through agreed lesson design
structures and differentiated instruction.
• Acknowledge excellence and extend achievement and progress by developing analytical, evaluative and creative thinking.
• Continue implementation of the Western Australian Curriculum and STEM.
• Enhance opportunity for 21st century technologies to be available and implemented across the curriculum.
Use of ICT to develop higher order thinking
