Objective
• The main objective is to increase the knowledge on the radio aspects of mobile broadband multimedia networks, by exploring and developing new methods, models, techniques, strategies and tools towards the implementation of 4th generation mobile communication systems.
Background
• COST 207, Digital Land Mobile Radio Communications, Mar. 1984 – Sep. 1988.
• COST 231, Evolution of Land Mobile Radio (Including Personal) Communications, Apr. 1989 – Apr. 1996.
• COST 259, Wireless Flexible Personalised Communications, Dec. 1996 – Apr. 2000.
Timetable
• The Action started on May 2001, and is due to finish by May 2005.
• 3 MC yearly meetings are being held:• 4th - Technical University of Helsinki,
Espoo, Finland, May 2002• 5th - IST-Technical University of Lisbon,
Portugal, Sep. 2002• 6th - Polytechnical University of
Catalonia, Barcelona, Spain, Jan. 2003• 7th - ENSTA, Paris, France, May 2003

Results
• Some preliminary results are:• exchange of measured data and models• collaboration between institutions from
different countries• setting up 4 Sub-Working Groups• 2 workshops• Short Term Missions• presence in conferences
Website
• A web site has been created, http://www.lx.it.pt/cost273, containing information on: News, Working Groups, Meetings, Status, Temporary Documents, Official Documents, Documents Download, Related Links, Related Conferences, Contacts, Member’s Area.
• Member’s Area allows: registration to meetings, submission of documents, access to full documents.
Tutorials (1)
• Tutorials by members are being offered just before the MC meeting: • Andreas Molisch on “Channel
Modelling”, attended by 71, in Espoo.• Gerd Wölfle on “Propagation Models”,
attended by 40, and Markus Radimirschon “Game Theory”, attended by 35, in Barcelona.
Tutorials (2)
• Tad Matsumoto on “Iterative (turbo) MIMO equalization techniques”, attendedby 37, and Roberto Verdone on “Radio resource management”, attended by 33, in Paris.
Short Term Missions
• 10 STMs were approved, and already took place.
• 2 STMs were approved, but still did not take place.
• 2 STMs were not approved: two persons were applying to do the same things, and only one was approved; one application came from someone and from an institution that had never participated in COST 273.
2nd Workshop (1)
• “Broadband Wireless Local Access”.• 2003/05/21-22 (1 ½ day), Paris, France.• Proceedings were published.• 4 Invited speakers from Europe, USA and
Japan.• 15 papers.• 137 participants.
Liaisons with other bodies (1)

• URSI• Com. C
• IST• ANTIUM, ARROWS, CELLO, ESCORT, FLOWS, MATRICE, MOMENTUM, ROMANTIK, SATURN, SCOUT, SEACORN, STINGRAY, TRUST, ULTRAWAVES.
The Future (1)
• Future meetings• 8th MCM: 2003/Sep., Prague, Czech
Republic• 9th MCM: 2004/Jan., Athens, Greece• 10th MCM: 2004/May, Goterborg,
