The strong increase of GDPin the SISU scenario iscaused by the multiplepositive direct as well asindirect impacts, e.g., fromthe growth of InformationSector and education level.Although the total increase inGDP seems to be realisticthe strong growth in thebeginning of SISU strategyimplementation (in year2000) is not. In the startmore slightly growing curvewould be more appropriate.

Urbanisation côtière et zones rurales a haute structuration historique: un modèle d’intervention

The URBACOST ProjectThe URBACOST Project

• Examine dynamics of urbanised Mediterranean coastal strips together with their back-lying rural, historically characterised zones

• Explore prospects for integrated and balanced development through valorisation of the inward territories, especially for sustainable tourism

• Confront planning hypothesis with local actors for concerted, integrated development strategies

Urbanisation côtière et zones rurales a haute structuration historique: un modèle d’intervention

An URBACOST HypothesisAn URBACOST Hypothesis

• Territories (like companies) can be considered as “knowledge repositories”, embedding especially concrete and uncodified knowledge

• Development strategies should thus focus on local economic actors’ ability to tap value from their territory’s knowledge assets

• Participation and concertation in integrated strategy-defining processes are an effective way to extract a territory’s knowledge-based development potential

Implications for 2007-13Implications for 2007-13

• Need for a specifically Mediterranean persepective on the knowledge economy

• Role of mentoring/participation/ concertation in managing knowledge strategies

• Pilot tests of alternative development models – i.e. “Creative Regions” in concrete Mediterranean contexts
