Facing media & societal changes

• Liquid modern society is in a permanent state of transition and flux, where uncertainty, change, conflict, and revolution are the permanent conditions of everyday life (Bauman 2005, Deuze 2008).

• The world of media (‘mediapolis’) is a mediated public space where media support and transform the experiences of everyday life (Silverstone 2007, Deuze 2008).

Highly mediated everyday life

• Proliferation of media culture, where media support and transform the experiences of everyday life (Hjarvard 2013; Hepp 2013; Bourdieu 2002; Carpentier 2011).

• Emerging new opportunities and risks inside the network society, with time-space compression, convergence between the public and the private, the personal and the social, ‘illusion of connectivity’ (Silverstone 2004).

Major groups of MIL actors in CEE


Main research outcomes

• Majority of innovative practices in MIL are mainly provided by NGOs and usually take place in informal education settings.

• A clear vision and proactive MIL policy, as well as coordination of different stakeholders’ activities is lacking on the national level.

• Lack of systemic approach in MIL, as well as lack of well-developed and sustainable partnerships between public, private and NGO sector are the most common characteristics for the new democracies of Central and Eastern Europe.

Positive developments & future outlook

• There is quite a substantial and permanent interest from the private sector, NGOs and academia towards MIL with their active and long-standing involvement in different programs and initiatives.

• A positive influence of different international programs, including European Commission, Council of Europe, Nordic Council of Ministers and UNESCO, which are bringing MIL to the forefront of the public competences necessary for democratic and sustainable welfare society.

Towards responsible & accountablemedia culture in CEE

• Media education can be of significance in raising public engagement, awareness and understanding of what is behind public information, i.e. what kind of interests media, politics or business may have, and how these may affect public decisions.

• Shared responsibility among different stakeholders should be promoted to sustain cooperation and advocacy actions for MIL.
