Who Knows? We Shall See.

A farmer was working in his field with his old sick horse. Wishing to relieve its burden, he set his horse free to go the mountains and live out the rest of its life.

His neighbors offered their condolences and said, "What a shame. How unfortunate. Now that your only horse is gone, how will you live, work the land, and prosper?" The farmer replied: "Who knows? We shall see".

Soon, the horse came back leading three healthy wild horses. People congratulated the farmer on his good luck. "How fortunate you are!" they exclaimed. The farmer softly replied, "Who knows? We shall see."

The farmer's only son set off to train the new wild horses, but was thrown to the ground and broke his leg. "What a tragedy! Your son won't be able to help you farm with a broken leg,” they said. Calmly going about his business the farmer answered, "Who knows? We shall see."

A war broke out, and the Emperor's men arrived conscripting all able-bodied men into the army. The farmer's son was deemed unfit because of his broken leg. "What very good fortune you have!" the villagers exclaimed as their own young sons were marched away. "Who knows? We shall see!" replied the old farmer as he headed off to work his field alone.

The son’s broken leg healed but the son was left with a limp. Again the neighbors came to pay their condolences. "Such bad luck." But the old farmer simply replied; "Who knows? We shall see."

The war resulted in the death of so many of the boys who had fought, and the old farmer and his son were among the few men capable of working the village lands. They became wealthy and were very generous to the villagers. They said: "Oh how fortunate we are, you must be very happy," to which the old farmer replied, "Who knows? We shall see!" …

UMW CHRISTMAS LUNCHEON

Once again the First United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall will be filled with candles, beautiful linens, and fine china for the annual Christmas Luncheon planned by the United Methodist Women. The event is set for Thursday, December 15th at 11:30 am with all ladies of the church invited to come enjoy the fellowship. The menu will offer assorted soups and holiday desserts along with hot Christmas tea!

Following the meal a program is planned by Stephanie Shields as she shares about "God's Gifts". Along with her "job" as FUMC office manager she has many talents and is always willing to share. She always has a smile to those entering the church and is ready to offer assistance. Her help with the many projects and activities of the UMW is much appreciated.

Anyone wanting to "set" a holiday themed table contact Liz Burnsides.

Prayer Teams

You are invited to be a part of the Prayer Team Ministry at FUMC whether you are making a permanent commitment or just want to "come and see", groups meet several times during the week in the Prayer Chapel (just across from the church office). Each group that meets in the Prayer Chapel, share or read the joys and concerns, offer silent prayer and then depart (at least as a group) after 30 minutes.

If your schedule will not allow you to attend your regular group, you may choose to participate at the time from wherever you are, you can choose to attend at another Prayer Group time, or you may come to the Chapel on your own at another time, whenever the church is open. It is designed to be a very relaxed atmosphere, and we hope you will give it a try.

How do you join a prayer team? Just show up at one of the given times below, contact David or Carol Baird or the church office for more information.

The Holidays: Stressful or Meaningful?

The holidays are quickly approaching--Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Years--Oh my! A time of the

year when it would be so easy to get caught up in the flow of materialism, busyness, and stress. If we’re

not careful, we can end up remembering those “good ole’ days” with nostalgia and find ourselves

viewing this year’s holiday season with bitterness or anxiety.

The good news is we can reclaim our holidays, particularly Christmas, through intentionality. The

more purposeful we are in crafting our Christmas season, the more meaningful and peaceful our

experience will be. Try these ideas:

Cut out the stress! This can be tough during the holidays because there are so many demands on your

time. There are the non-negotiable demands (family dinner with the in-laws or son’s winter concert),

the optional demands (staff holiday party, Black Friday shopping, baking 10 different kinds of

desserts), and the things we personally “demand” that make Christmas meaningful (delivering those

cookies to neighbors and friends, candlelight Christmas services) and the truth is, some of the best

parts of Christmas are worth the stress. So the goal here is to figure out which stress is most

meaningful and which can be let go. Maybe you love getting together with extended family, but the gift

exchange with them is stressing you and your wallet. Maybe the holiday decorations help put you in

the Christmas spirit, but trying to keep up the Jones’ is stressful. Reflect on what helps make

Christmas meaningful to you and your family, and work hard at eliminating or down-playing the

unnecessary stressors.

Plan downtime. Mark off big chunks of time when you and your family are being--not doing or going

or fixing or cleaning. For me to feel rejuvenated, I need at least half a day-- preferably a whole day--of

downtime. There’s a reason why God’s plan for us includes a Sabbath day once a week! I like to stay in

my pajamas, make a real breakfast (bacon, eggs, pancakes), color with my kids, do some yoga, drink

coffee on my deck, or poke around in my yard. These things restore my soul. What about you?

Below are some more ideas on how to help bring intention and meaning into your holiday season.

Blessings to you and your loved ones! ~ Heidi Komorech

Instead of… Try these ideas:

Getting a perfect, unique gift for everyone you’ve shaken hands with this year

Cut your gift list down.

Give gift cards.

Give non-gifts, like donate to Heifer International in their name.

Do a white elephant exchange.

Getting caught up in the materialism of shopping for gifts, decorations, lights, music, food, etc.

Be satisfied with the decorations you already have.

Make decorations with your family.

Decorate with meaning--advent calendars, nativity scenes, advent wreaths, candles…

Going to or hosting lots of Christmas events Pick the most meaningful Christmas events, and send your polite regrets to the rest.

Shopping on Thanksgiving/ Black Friday Quietly protest making people work on Thanksgiving and stay home with your family. Seriously consider whether shopping on Black Friday (or Thursday) is worth the stress.

Sunday Night Youth Gatherings November 20th this will be the final Sunday night youth gathering for 2016. Middle School: will meet in the Fellowship hall from 5:30-6:30pm for club, games and faith talks. Sr. High: will meet at the Komorech’s home from 7:17-8:30pm, we'll eat, play, spend time in fellowship and study the Bible. 25979 247th Street, Maryville, MO 64468.

Progressive Dinner & White Elephant Exchange December 11th 5:30-8:00pm We are looking for youth families to host this year’s progressive dinner. Our First location would offer appetizers, our second location a main dish and side, and our third location desserts and a place to do a white elephant gift exchange. If your family would consider hosting please contact Christopher Komorech. White Elephant means you bring something from your house that you repurpose, this can be a funny gift or something inexpensive bought from a store. Try to find something that you think someone will want, nobody likes to be the kid going home with the stuffed troll. (well someone probably is good with that) These gifts are then placed in a circle and chosen one by one until they are all gone. There are a couple of rules on how this works but you will figure it out. Its always a fun night. Cookies for the Treatment Center (Kingdom Builders) Saturday December 17th 10:00 am-12:00pm On Saturday the 17th the youth will be packaging and wrapping cookies for the treatment center. We have over 250 dozen cookies to prepare for those housed in the center. What do we do? First, show up Saturday morning. Second, help package hundreds of cookies., Third, and quite possibly the most important you eat the broken cookies because really, who wants to get a broken cookie. These cookies are donated from ministries and organizations all around the Maryville and will be delivered to the Maryville Treatment Center the following week. We do this to show those housed in the treatment center that they are not forgotten and are loved. It’s a great community service plus you get to eat all the broken cookies you like. So come help us out Saturday morning even if you can only stay for a couple of hours the more help the more we can get done. Confirmation for December Confirmation in December will only take place on the 11th during the Sunday School hour for First United Methodist Church. (Mentor Sunday)

Geekatopia Wednesdays 6:00 - 7:00 pm 7th - 12th graders come get your geek on, from Star Wars to Magic the Gathering.

Monday, November 14th Ninja Lawn Pizza and Ninja Yard Raking. You may not believe it but at some point you might find it difficult to go out and rake the leaves. Ninja Yard Raking is when we as a youth group scour Maryville for folks who could use a helping hand with their yard. We strike with a raking fury and disappear without a trace leaving not a leaf to blow in the wind. Ok, so there might be one or two leaves left, but the point is we helped someone out and it was fun doing it. Then that night we will celebrate with S'mores over a warm fire and talk about why Jesus would care if we rake someone's yard.

Holy Land Registration Meeting

Mon, Dec. 13, 2016 6:00 pm in Room 303

Do you have a friend or family member who is difficult to find a gift for at Christmas? Consider encouraging them to visit Bethlehem in May! We will visit the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem that surrounds the stable area believed to be the location of Christ’s birth!

Are you tired and weary from all the political ads and the negative nature of the 2016 US Election? Consider taking ten days to explore a very different political and economic situation in the Holy Land.

Do you feel called to grow your Christian Spirituality and faith development? The trip to the Holy Land serves as a great opportunity for you to get closer to and experience the setting for Christ’s ministry? Our experience will be enriched by the teachings of Dr. Peter Miano of the Society of Biblical Studies and Dr. Thomas Phillips who is on faculty at Claremont School of Theology and is an expert in New Testament contexts.

If you might be interested in joining our group, please consider attending our second Registration Meeting on Tuesday, December 13th at 6:00 pm in Room 303. All we need to reserve your space is money for a deposit and optional travel insurance, and a registration form along with a copy of your passport photo page. Kevin Romig can guide you through the registration process, and answer most of your questions about the trip. The cost is at $3297 which includes airfare from the USA to Israel, all lodging and transportation, and breakfast and dinner daily. Please prayerfully consider this incredible opportunity.
