Personals

With Heartfelt ThanksWords cannot begin to express my heartfelt thanks for all the prayers and cards of concern before my surgery and now during my recovery. A special thanks to Pastor Bob for his presence and prayers at the hospital the day of my surgery. God’s blessing to the Pastors, Staff, and members of the church.Barb Hall

Thank you for your prayers and expressions of encouragement during Bob’s hospitalization and home recovery. Your love has deeply touched us. We feel so blessed to be surrounded by the loving Epworth Christian community. May God Bless you.Yours in Christ,Bob & Marilyn Town

I would like to say a most sincere thank you to Pastor Bob, Pastor Keith and to Sherry, for being the conduit to make the attention happen. Also to friends whose words of encouragement made a difference. I have not been a regular attendee for the 3 years of intensive care needed by my husband, Ed Domansky.I would like to share with Epworth members how Ed enjoyed United Methodist doctrinces and the warmth of the members, so much so he joined Asbury UMC after we were married in 1991. He served on committees for the 15 years he was a member, serving as Chairman of the Board of Trustees for several years. He enjoyed robust health for all those years, treating the office like a job. He’d wake up Monday morning, after ushering on Sunday and report for whatever project needed attention. He was a cradle Catholic and upon the closing of Asbury, he returned to Christ the King Catholic Church. When Pastor Bob visited, either in one of the hospitals or Hospice, Ed was so touched and comforted by Pastor’s parting prayer, he shed a tear, whether

conscious or comatose. This was much appreciated by all present. At Ed’s funeral there was Pastor Bob, Pastor Wynston Dixon and Priests and much admired Deacon Rob, as well as Dennis Lynch, the latter 2 who delivered the Host and comforting presence in the home, months, and years prior to his final illness. To all these, my family and I say, Thank You.Glenita Rosebery Domansky

The family of Ginny Mewhort appreciates all the many acts of kindness, remembrances, and support we received as we have celebrated her life. She would have been honored by your outpouring of love and care as were we.

Thank You EpworthI sincerely thank you so much for your graciousness and generosity of the "Love gift." I was completely surprised and very moved by this special gift. It is truly appreciated and I thank you from the bottom of my heart.

It has been a privilege and an honor to serve as the Director of Health Ministries at Epworth for the past 4 1/2 years. I was blessed to work with the "best staff,” a great committee, and so many wonderful Epworth families and homebound members. This job has meant a lot to me, and it has been so fulfilling to be in a position to provide needed ministries for our members and the community. I have truly been blessed, and my life has been enriched as a result of working with all of you.

As I prepare to spend the next few years focusing more time on my family, I am at peace with my decision to step-down at this time and look forward to seeing how God will work with new hands to care for our congregation.

Thank you, and may God bless you all!

Your House…Our House

The Administrative Council has authorized a short term capital campaign for two special needs:

1. A Habitat for Humanity house renovation – Your House

2. Needed renovations for handicap and special needs accessibility here at Epworth – Our House.

The theme of the campaign is Your House…Our House. The theme is a play on the familiar Spanish phrase “Su Casa, Mi Casa.” Our intention is to reach out to help provide a home for a family in our community as well as to do some needed renovations here at our house. Our goal is $75,000. The first $25,000 will go toward our commitment for the Habitat project. The next $50,000 or more will be used here at Epworth for renovations to provide handicap and special needs accessibility improvements to our facility.

We are calling upon the generous members of the Epworth community to make a “second-mile” gift to fund our part of the Habitat for Humanity project as well as much needed renovations to our facilities. Your House…Our House is not only a theme but is the description of the need and the opportunity. We have the opportunity to meet the need of a local family for safe affordable housing and to make needed renovations to enhance the handicap accessibility of our own house.

Please prayerfully consider making a cash gift or pledge to the Your House…Our House Special Campaign on or before our campaign celebration day on Sunday June 9. A pledge card is available in the pews or church office for your convenience.

Health Ministries

HEALTH MINISTRIES MOMENT:How does your sugar stack up?

• Make smart choices from each food group.

• Find your balance between food and physical activity.

• Get the most nutrition out of your calories.

• Increase your daily intake of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and non-fat or low-fat milk and milk products.

• Choose fats wisely for good health.

• Choose foods and beverages low in added sugars.

• Choose and prepare foods with little salt.

• If you choose to drink alcohol, do so in moderation.

• Keep food safe to eat.

The average person in the US eats about 21 teaspoons of added sugar each day which is about 17% of the average caloric intake. Sugar consumption has increased about 23% over the last 30 years. The World Health Organization recommends limiting intake of added sugars to 10% or less of total calories. Sugar does play a part in the current health crisis around the globe contributing to people being overweight and obese. Overweight and obesity are risk factors for chronic diseases such as high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, diabetes and certain cancers.

Sugar is the most common food additive in the United States. There is “hidden” sugar in such things as spaghetti sauce, baked beans, ketchup, steak and seasoning sauces, salad dressing and instant cereals to name a few. Sweetened beverages, like regular soda, juice drinks, sports drinks, energy drinks and flavored coffee drinks are loaded with sugar. Be sure to read your Nutrition Facts Label on your food. Sugar is listed under “Total Carbohydrates” and consists of the naturally occurring sugars and the added sugars. Ingredients are listed in order by weight so check to see how often sugar is listed as the first, second or third ingredient. Common listings are beet sugar, brown sugar, cane sugar, confectioner’s sugar, corn sweetener, corn syrup, dextrose, fructose, glucose, high-fructose corn syrup, honey, invert sugar, lactose, maltose, maple syrup, molasses, powdered sugar, raw sugar, sorghum, sucrose, table sugar and Turbinado sugar. Sugar free means that the food has less than 0.5 grams of sugar in one serving. All natural does not mean that sugar has not been added. Remember that a restaurant portion can be more than three servings. A deli bagel or muffin is usually four servings and a large muffin may have as much as 6 teaspoons of added sugar and a cereal bowl holds two or more servings. Consult with cookbooks that have lower-sugar recipes and alternatives.

NEW Alzheimer’s /Dementia Support Group: Support for the Caregiver of a Loved One with Memory Loss

A new support group is forming at Epworth for caregivers of those with Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related diseases. This support group plans to meet the third Saturday of each month in the lounge at Epworth from 10:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Our first meeting will be on Saturday, June 15.

Debra Bradford and Milo Bishop will be co-facilitating this group. They bring real life experience, understanding, information, and references to this new endeavor.

This group is open to the community. However, if you are interested in attending this group, you must pre-register by contacting Debra Bradford or Milo Bishop.

If you are caring for someone with Alzheimer’s or Dementia, we hope you will consider joining this group. Remember, you do not have to walk this journey alone.

MISSION TEACHING TRIP TO HAITI

Are you interested in a life-changing experience? Epworth will be sending a mission team to Haiti the week of August 31-September 7, 2013 to teach at Grace Children’s Hospital. We are looking for physical, occupational and respiratory therapists, nurses, social workers and other health-care providers who would be interested in sharing basic science information with Grace Children’s Hospital’s Community Health Workers and Nurses who are working with children with disabilities. We will be teaching in a small group setting and will travel with the Community Workers as they provide at-home rehabilitation services to the children.

This is an opportunity to see and experience first-hand what Epworth has been a part of in Haiti for more than 40 years. For more information contact Jo Hartman.

Epworth has a prayer chain. Many faithful prayer warriors, including every staff member, receive notice by email each time there is a request for prayer. If you or your family has a need, please call Nancy in the church office, and she will send out your request immediately. Many will be praying within a short period of time and will continue to pray. We believe prayer changes things. Our trust in God is strengthened when we rely on the Lord to hear us. If you desire to be one of those praying for others, let Nancy know your email address and you will become an instrument of grace through your prayers.

We will look at the question, what does Paul’s conversion and growth in Christianity suggest about our own experience? Join us anytime; we welcome your participation.

Coffee and Conversation Class, Room 020 (Volunteer Office)The miniseries “The Bible” shown on the History Channel offered adaptations of the best-known stories in the Bible. From Noah’s Ark and Daniel in the Lion’s Den to the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, this series took a walk through God’s story and the people in it. We are viewing clips from the series and discussing how stories of the Bible pertain to us today. We love new faces. We even have our own coffee pot!
