Resident Semi-Annual Safety Orientation
Thursday, April 30, 2014
Floors 2 – 12......10:00 AM Floors 14 – 24 ……2:00 PM
It is time for our semi-annual Resident Safety Orientation. At this
orientation, we will present information on fire safety, how the fire alarm
system works, procedures for evacuating the building, fire extinguisher
use and disaster preparedness. This session is important to our emer-
gency planning here at The Towers. It is extremely important that each
Resident be familiar with evacuation procedures. This session will help
you understand the procedures our staff must use when responding to
a fire alarm or other emergency. All sessions will be held in the Azalea
Room. For planning purposes, we identify the floors that should
attend each session; however, if you are unable to attend the session
scheduled for your floor, please feel free to attend the other meeting.

Share Your Life Story For centuries, people all around the world have shared their stories about family traditions, spiritual beliefs and wisdom through the telling of stories. Your life story is an important and unique way to share your perspective of your time here on Earth. Why share your story?...Only your words can tell your journey! Through journaling, you can create a timeline of your life’s events. By writing as much or as little as you would like, the context of your life becomes much richer and you leave, in writing, your everlasting legacy and in turn, a treasure for your family’s future generations! You might be surprised at how much you have to say and how easy it is to write. As listed on the April “My Life Story” agenda, join fellow Residents for this weekly class hosted by Jenny every Monday at 3:30 PM in the Conference Room, located next to the Security office. The dates for May are as follows: May 4th, 11th, and 18th. Whether you are new to journaling or a sea-soned writer, I hope to see you there! There is no sign up re-quired.

Four couples arrive at the townhouse of a deputy New York City mayor and his wife to attend a party celebrating their tenth wedding anniversary. However, the four couples soon discover that there are no servants, the hostess is missing and the deputy mayor has shot himself in the head (it’s only a flesh wound). Comic complications arise when, given everyone's upper class status, they decide they need to do everything possible to conceal the evening's events from the local police and the media. Find out what all the Rumors are about on Thursday, May 7th. Residents will attend this performance at the Vexlar theatre. Tickets start at $21.00 and can be purchased by calling 302-6835. In San Francisco in the 1950s, Margaret, played by
Amy Adams, was a woman trying to make it on her
own after leaving her husband with only her daugh-
ter and her paintings. She meets gregarious ladies'
man and fellow painter Walter Keane, played by
Christoph Waltz, in a park while she is struggling to
make an impact with her drawings of children with
big eyes. The two quickly become a pair with out-
going Walter selling their paintings and quiet Marga-
ret holed up at home painting even more children
with big eyes. But Walter's actually selling her paint-
ings as his own. A clash of financial success and
critical failure soon sends Margaret reeling in her
life of lies. With Walter still living the high life, Mar-
garet's going to have to try making it on her own
again and re-claiming her name and her paint-
ings. Residents will view this movie on Tuesday,

Red Geraniums Red geraniums against the sky
Make it a deeper blue.
White contrails from a plane’s flyby
Add to this magic hue.
Red, white and blue—a message here.
The colors of our flag;
Remind us of the lives so dear
Who for their country died.
So plant geraniums everywhere.
Make certain they are red.
Place them on balconies and stairs
To honor our war dead.

I know we have all experienced tight calves, a stiff neck, hip pain or leg and foot pain. A lot of time this pain comes from tight connective tissue surrounding the muscles called fascia. Our fascial network is a system of fascia and connecting ligaments and tendons. This fascia is a thin tissue that covers all the organs of the body. When you stretch the muscles of the body you are actually stretching the fascia and the muscle. The condition of our connective tissue depends on two factors – age and what we have done in our lives to keep this tissue healthy. As we get older we experience movement restrictions that can make it difficult to perform simple activities of daily living. When muscle fibers are injured, the fibers and the fascia which surrounds it become short and tight. This stress can be transmitted through the fascia to other parts of the body causing pain and a variety of other symptoms. There is a technique known as self myofascial release which works with folks of all ages and helps to relieve the tightness in the injured fascia and muscle, thus relieving pain. If this is something you would be interested in learning how to do on yourself contact Deb Buie in the Wellness Center. I will be offering a one-time class in the Wellness Center on Tuesday, May 12th at 1:00 pm. Sign up is required and space is limited. See Deb Buie in the Wellness Center for sign up.

Pigeon Problem
The area around The Towers has a healthy population of pigeons and other wild birds. The months of June through September appear to be their primary breeding season, and that is when our pigeon problem is at its worst. Feeding these birds or leaving excess water on balconies can attract pigeons to the building. Pi-geon droppings are unsanitary and make the bal-conies look quite unsightly. As good neighbors, emphasis on the following two steps will help eve-ryone to minimize the pigeon problem:
1. Please do not feed the pigeons. 2. Please do not give the pigeons access to any water on your balcony.
Thank you for your cooperation and assistance.
