During t h e firm's heyday i n t h e 1 0 3 0 1 s , a n n u a l p r o f i t s were o f t e n i n e x c e s s o f $100,000, and 1 ,000 t o 1 ,200 s l a v e s were s h i p p e d a n n u a l l y t o t h e Southvrest . East o f them were t r a n s p o r t e d on t h e f i r m ' s own s h i p s , which s a i l e d f r o n A l e x a n d r i a e v e r y 30 days d u r i n g t h e October-May s h i p p i n g s e a s o n .

Because Franl:lin and Armfield had 9Jhat F r e d e r i c B a n c r o f t , t h e h i s t o r i a n o f t h e s l a v e t r a d e , h a s d e s c r i b e d as "a p o s i t i v e g e n i u s f o r specu a t i n e i n s l a v e s , " t h e y r a p i d l y amassed c o n s i d - e r a b l e f ~ r t u n e s . ~ Although F r a n k l i n t s e s t a t e was l a t e r a s s e s s e d a t S750,000, Ran7 o f h i s con tempora r i e s c o n s i d e r e d him a m i l l i o n a i r e , a f i g u r e which nay be c l o s e r t o t h e t r u t h . A r c f i e l d was b e l i e v e d t o be n o r t h around ~ 5 W 0 , 0 0 0 . "But a l o n g with w e a l t h , " s a y s S tephenson , "had cone a nodicum o f s t i g v a r e s u l t i n g from p a r t i c i p a t i o n i n a b u s i n e s s t h a t was t o l e r a t e d o n l y b e c a u s e i t was r e g a r d e d as a n e c e s s i t y ."7

By 1836 F r a n k l i n had withdrawn from a c t i v e involvement i n t h e s l a v e t r a d e , t h e Alexandr ia o f f i c e and s a i l i n g s h i p s had been s o l d , and A r n f i e l d had begun s e t t l i n g t h e f i rc ls a f f a i r s , a t a s k n o t f i n i s h e d u n t i l w e l l a f t e r t h e s e n i o r p e r t n e r l s d e a t h i n 1546.
