It’s the early morning hours as youget into a hot shower. It feels sogood to get clean! You reach for

the shampoo and conditioner, it smellsgood as you lather it into your hair.You use the body wash, making thewhole bathroom smell great! You letthe hot water from the shower streamdown your body, cleansing you fromhead to toe, then you step out andreach for a towel. It smells good, too,from using the dryer sheets, then youput on the body lotion to protect yourskin... BUT by now, you have justexposed yourself to twenty some-oddtoxic chemicals—and all before break-fast! Good morning to you, too!! We use personal-care products on

a daily basis to look and smell good,but what are they doing to our insideson a daily basis? Cosmetic companiesare using toxic chemicals known tocause cancer and birth defects withabsolutely no repercussions. There areno FDA regulations in place to moni-tor or control what toxic substancesare in these beauty products. Theydon’t even have to file data on thetoxic substances they use! Petroleum-jelly is oil and mineral

oil is oil—as in industrial oil—whichcauses chemical warfare on our skin and face! Sodium laureth sulfate (SLS) is found in 90% of all shampoos. Itcollects in the heart, lungs, liver and brain. When mixed with otherchemicals, it becomes carcinogenic.Neutrogena, Salon Selectives, andClairol Herbal Essence, to name a few, contain SLS. Propylene glycol is extremely

toxic and causes brain, liver and kidney damage. It’s found in deodor-ants like Degree, as well as many hairproducts, such as LA Looks Styling Geland Dep Sport Endurance Styling Gel. DEA, MEA, and TEA are all

hormone-disrupting chemicals, that can form cancer-causing nitrosamines.

They’re found in body washes andshampoos, such as in the Flex, Finesseand Pantene brands. The University ofIllinois did a study and found a linkbetween the use of these products and liver and kidney cancer. Dibutylphthalate has been linked to cancer;it’s found in nail polishes, like OPI,and in hairsprays and deodorants. Artificial colors, like Blue #1 and

Green #3, are carcinogenic. Colorswith FD&C pigments are made fromcoal tar, which is also carcinogenic. It’s in Dove’s body-wash products and in the Clearasil skin products. Formaldehyde is a preservative

that can damage the respiratory system, weaken the immune system,and cause cancer. It has been foundin the fat cells of cadavers. OPI’snail polishes and many other beau-ty products on the department-store shelf contain formaldehyde. The use of talcum powder

has been linked to ovarian cancer. It interferes with thyroid function and causesthyroid cancer and hypothy-roidism. Dimethicone, a sili-cone emollient, promotestumors and has been found in theliver and lymph nodes. It is foundin most creams and lotions. DEA-diethanolamine is a chemical commonly used as a thickeningagent in shampoos, soaps, hairspraysand sunscreens. It blocks the absorp-tion of choline, which is essential tobrain development in a fetus. Lacquer, found in mascara,

causes eyelashes to fall out. Sodiumnitrate is used to make meat lookfresher and to increase its shelf life;it has been clinically proven tocause leukemia, brain tumors, and other forms of cancer. Aspartame (a common

synthetic sweetener) is genetical-ly modified and can cause dizzi-

ness, headaches and even seizures; it can alter behavior due to the hampering of brain function. Perchlorate is a by-product of

rocket fuel and has been discovered in 90% of the U.S. lettuce and milk supply. Propyl paraben, found in manyprocessed pastries and in skin-careproducts, can cause breast tendernessand breast cancer, and is a hormonedisruptor. Now more than ever, it’simportant to shop carefully and checklabels! As you can see, we live in a

highly-toxic industrialized society

APPLE-PECTIN TONER NON-TOXIC BEAUTY TREATMENT

1 apple, cut up with peel, seeds removed,

1/2 cup purified water

1/4 cup witch hazel

Place the cut apple in asmall saucepan with the water. Bring to a boil and remove from heat. Allow the mixture to cool completely, then strain outthe apple chunks, stir in the witch hazeland pour into a clean container.
