WILL THE PHILLIES SCORE BIG THIS OFFSEASON? n Jake saMson, The Villa’S Voice guesT sPorTs rePorTer

THE PHILLIES hit the jackpot last offseason, signing Andrew McCutchen, Bryce Harper and trading for JT Realmuto…and somehow still swung and missed at a playoff berth once again. It has been

since 2011 since the Phillies had October baseball, and fans are starting to get restless. The front office also made a big decision, parting ways with Gabe Kapler after two seasons of experimentation and he already found a new job in San Francisco. Even with all of this turmoil, due to the owners’ checkbook, the Philadelphia culture and various other factors, the Phillies are once again a hot des-tination for free agents this offseason. As we saw a Nationals/Astros world series, what did these two teams have in common? Three SOLID starting pitchers, who could go 6–7 innings every night. The Phillies came into this past season thinking that they were going to win games 8–5 every night, and their plan absolutely blew up in

their faces as they finished 14th of 30 MLB teams in that category averaging 4.78 runs per game and were 24th of 30 MLB teams in runs scored on the road. Now, the Phillies could use a bat. Anthony Rendon from the

Washington Nationals would fit them perfectly to round out a stacked lineup. Josh Donaldson is another third base-

man who played in the NL East who bet on himself on a one year contract and played phenomenally once again for the Atlanta Braves. However, this is an off-season where the Phillies have no choice but to go all in on pitching. Ranking 17th of 30 MLB teams in ERA and having maybe one legitimate starter, it is time for the Phillies to make these moves. Gerrit Cole is the jackpot after another insane year

in Houston, but Zack Wheeler (Mets), Madison Bumgarner (Giants), Dallas Keuchel (Braves) and Jake

Odorizzi (Twins) would all fit in and be a #1/#2 starter for this team. For the Phillies to make the next step and

return to October baseball, pitching has to be a priority. The question remains though if they can bring one of these arms to wear the red and white pinstripes.

FIVE PONDS SINGLES CLUB n Merryl PelBerg

THE FIVE PONDS SINGLES are having a fun, busy year. Shows at the Bristol Theater followed by dinner; a trip to an his-toric mansion; and a luncheon celebrating the move of three of our members to their new homes are some of the enjoyable outings we have had this year. We will be enjoying a holiday dinner at the Victor Cafe in December and spending a delightful evening at the Philly Pops in January with dinner at LaScala in center city Philly. Other activities are being planned after the New Year. If you are single and want to be a part of this wonderful club, please come out and join us. We love making new friends. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at 7 PM in the Ballroom.

BROADWAY SHOW TRIP TO SEE “TOOTSIE” n cheryle goldBerg

ON A BEAUTIFUL Wednesday afternoon, 56 Five Ponders boarded the bus to New York to see the new musical comedy, Tootsie. When we arrived in New York, we split up to dine at restaurants of our choice, meeting later at the beautiful Marquis Theater. I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard at a Broadway show! The actors, including Toni Award winner Santino Fontana, who played Michael Dorsey/Dorothy Michaels, were terrific and the hilarious comedy lines were never ending. We were also very lucky to have a great bus driver, Tom, who had our bus parked right outside the exit door of the theater for the trip back home. Another great day and show in New York. Thank you to everyone for joining us on this NY show trip and for supporting the Day Trip Committee. I hope to see you on our next Broadway show trip in the May to see Tina.

THE FUN OF TRAIN DOMINOES CONTINUES… n Donna Besignano

JOIN YOUR NEIGHBORS and friends for a friendly, pickup game of Dominoes.

Don’t know how to play? We’ll teach you! No stress, just fun. We get together the 1st Thursday of each month at 7 PM in the Clubhouse Sports Lounge. (Our next game is December 5th). For more info & questions, call Donna Besignano 908-526-7496.

CHERYLE & RICK GOLDBERG recently visited France. They write: “Here are a few photos of our recent Riverboat trip from Paris to Normandy along the Seine River. We started in Paris, France and visited most of Paris's famous sites including The Louve, The Arc de Triumph, The Eiffel Tower, The Musee d’Orsay, Le Marias, Musee l’Orange, Versailles, The Champ-Elysees and The Louve. Once we boarded The Viking Riverboat Rolf, we stopped at the most beautiful towns along The Seine River, including Vernon, Giverney, Rouen, Les Andelys and Normandy, where we visited The D-Day Museum, Omaha Beach and The Memorial Cemetaries. The Viking Riverboat was amazing, with a beautiful room including veranda, unbelievable service and gourmet meals. It was truly a trip that we will never forget.”

MEN'S CLUB VISIT n Berny duBin

THE MEN’S CLUB had gone to Willow Grove Air Plane Museum October 23 and lunch after our visit. The tour guide was very informative and he was a Navy pilot. An interest-ing fact is he had actually flown one of the planes we had seen. Since a member of the board has requested the Men’s Club not be published as a Club in The Villa's Voice I will be putting the chairs information in every article that appears in The Voice so you know how to reach us. The chairs are Berny Dubin, 215-674-5916; Howard Rabinovitch, 267-282-5018; and Steve Warshaw, 215-674-4894.

BIRTHDAY & ANNIVERSARY GREETINGS END IN DECEMBERCHERYLE GOLDBERG has notified us that “…after 13 years, I have decided to withdraw from this monthly activity.” Those of us who have participated will surely miss it, along with the Social Community, which derived noticable income from the contributions over the years. Thanks Cheryle! We appreciate your work and hope someone will come along to help “carry on” the program you established.

I WOULD LIKE TO acknowledge everyone for the numerous phone calls and cards for my Paul's passing. He was a great guy and your confirmation of that warms my broken heart. Thank You for you sympathy, kindness and support at this difficult time ~Hilda Elmstrom

MY HEARTFELT THANKS to my Five Ponds friends and neighbors for the many calls, cards, visits and goodies following my recent surgery. Your kindnesses did much to help my recovery. We are so lucky to live in such a caring community! Fondly, ~Bev Samson

TO OUR DEAR FRIENDS at Five Ponds: Words cannot express how grateful we are for the many ways you have comforted us since the recent loss of my mom. We are truly touched by your kindness during this difficult time in our lives. ~Sue & Ron Gordon

COOKING CLUB #2: FAMILY FAVORITES EVENT n cindy WoldoW

On October 23, 2019 Cooking Club 2 held our Opening Event, “Family Favorites.” We had a taste of many dishes passed down from generation to generation. An added delight, was watching the attendees trying to figure out which committee members (or their families) were in the “Old Time” pictures that were part of the table decorations.

FAMILY FAVORITES Committee: from left to right: Donna Lewis, Judy Gold, Rita Solofsky, Cindy Woldow, Carol Potack, Diane Polsky, and Karen Castelli (missing: Shelly Greco.)

’TIS THE SEASON OF SCAMS BUCKS COUNTY CRIMES AGAINST OLDER ADULTS Task Force wishes you a safe and pleasant holiday season! The holiday season is one of the busiest times of year for scammers. Here are the top three scams to watch out for:

ONLINE SHOPPING—FAKE WEBSITESWhat it is: Scammers launch a copycat website of a well-known retailer, or create a website offering popular, sometimes previously "sold out," merchandise at crazy discounts. How it works: A classic phishing scam— often by email but increasingly through links on social media sites—the email appears to come from a legitimate company and the link sends you to a phony website where you’re asked to enter personal information. What to do:• Search the retailer, type in “vendor name + scam” and see what comes up.• Type URLs directly into your browser; do not click on a link from an email or social media site unless you are absolutely sure the message is from the legitimate business.• On the payment page, look for “https” at the beginning of the address (the “s” stands for “secure”).• Shopping on a new site? Look for a return policy and contact information, including a real address, a toll-free customer service number, and other ways to reach the company if you have a problem.• Use a credit card (not a debit card) when shopping online for greater protections against possible fraud.

GIFT CARDS How it works: Thieves hit a store gift card rack, secretly write down or electronically scan the numbers off the cards, then check online or call the toll-free number to see if someone has bought the cards and activated them. As soon as a card is active, the scammers drain the funds. By the time you try to use the same card, the money is long gone. What to do:• Only purchase gift cards from reputable sources. Better yet, get them directly from the store they’re from–and preferably directly from

the store cashier–and ask them to scan the card to ensure it has the correct balance.• Carefully examine both sides of the card and look for signs of tampering, such as an exposed PIN. If you find anything questionable, ask for another card and examine that one, too.• Online gift card purchases should be made di-rectly from the retailer's website. Never buy them on auction sites even if it looks like a great deal; these cards may be stolen or counterfeit.• Keep your receipt as proof of purchase until the card’s value has been exhausted.• Do not provide your personal information: no reputable business will require you to provide your Social Security number, bank account infor-mation, or date of birth in order to purchase a gift card—you're not applying for credit.

FAKE CHARITIES How it works: The end of the year is a prime time for charitable donations, and scammers try to take advantage. Fake charities are among the most popular holiday scams: scammers either misuse the name of a genuine organization, or make up their own. What to do:• Only donate to charities you know. If a new charity piques your interest, be sure to verify it on charitynavigator.org. • If you get a request via phone, STOP. Be suspi-cious. We recommended that you call the charity directly using the contact info on their website and ask if they can send you material about themselves to your mailing address.• Do not donate cash or use a wire transfer. Verify the organization’s correct name and do-nate by check.• Ask how much of your donation will go for the cause. Some charities often spend the majority of their money for internal operational costs.

OTHER SCAMS TO LOOK OUT FOR DURING THE HOLIDAYS:• Travel deals• ATM skimmers• Package delivery notice• Suspicious social media giveaways

4 TIPS TO FOLLOW IF YOU'VE BEEN VICTIMIZED:• File a police report. Go to your local police sta-tion and file a report about the fraud or scam so you can prove to your bank and credit reporting

companies you’ve been scammed.• Tell your credit card company and bank. If you are the victim of identity theft or some other financial scam, contact the fraud department at your credit card company and bank. You may have to close the account or the institution may just remove the fraudulent transactions.• Report the fraud to the three credit reporting companies. Do this as soon as possible, especially if your personal information was used to take out a new credit line, make purchases, take out loans, or anything else that could affect your credit. Each credit reporting company has a fraud unit: Equifax: 800 525-6285; Experian: 888 EXPERIAN or 888 397-3742; TransUnion: 800-680-7289.• Gather evidence. In addition to the police re-port, save what you can related to the suspected fraud. Having items such as letters/emails of solicitation, prospectuses, cancelled checks, cash receipts, receipts for cashier’s checks or money orders, bank statements, investment statements, or medical statements could help you get your money back or protect yourself from further victimization.
