The Partnership was envisioned by students and staff at Leeds at a crucial point in the history of higher education. Paying higher fees, it would be easy for students to consider themselves consumers and staff suppliers of their immediate satisfaction rather than intellectual development. By outlining what they can expect from each other, the Partnership made it clear that the relationship between students and staff is not transactional but transformational.

To identify the shared set of expectations and behaviours staff and students initially worked separately to gather ideas before coming together to co-author the Partnership. This process revealed the importance of the expectations that exist not only between staff and students but also within these groups on a peer-to-peer level. Taking a dual bottom-up approach to writing the agreement meant that both the content and the language of the Partnership were appropriate and accessible for staff and students alike. Consequently, it received

high levels of support when it went to the Union’s Better University forum, University Senate and University Council. Furthermore it revealed that a majority of the behaviours are shared mutually by all staff and students at Leeds.

The Partnership outlines the mutual expectations of us all as members of the University community. In April 2012 the Partnership Awards were held to celebrate staff and students at Leeds who exemplified these behaviours. The awards received over 500 nominations for 9 awards which were won by students and staff alike. This book documents the evening and how staffs and students have worked together, in partnership to make the University of Leeds better for everyone.

Winner - Christopher Lee Nominated by - Dr Siobhan Hugh-Jones: ‘Chris has been an exciting, forward thinking student in Psychology who has put his creative skills to excellent use in the production of PsychSpark - the first staff-student publication

in Psychology that builds community and shared knowledge.

Working with a team of undergraduates, Chris has designed a professional, engaging and impressive publication that has been noted by the Head of Institute, Faculty Dean and even Vivien Jones.

Chris has been innovative in the content, design and purpose of the publication and has fuelled excitement among staff and students about our shared passion for psychology. Chris drove the publication forward, motivating staff and students to contribute, and worked exceptionally hard to produce an outstanding first issue.’

Dr Simon Budd, Hon. Senior Lecturer in Psychiatry.

‘The course is innovative, and helps new Freshers settle in to medical school quickly. It highlights important issues about potential careers, their own safety and aspects of the course including their professional conduct. Some examples of innovation in the programme include “MBCHB the Silent movie” and“Job Idol”.’

Winner - Julie Wallbank Nominated by Chris Dietz ‘As my dissertation supervisor and Gender and the Law tutor, Julie has encouraged me to challenge all my acquired knowledge in respect of law and society. The way she leaves no stone unturned inspires me

(and other students) to aspire to the same academic diligence and creativity. Gender and the Law was a coherently structured course and yet I doubt that any two essays on the arguments for same-sex marriages will be the same. She also suggested that everyone in our class submit their essays to the Home Office Consultation on same-

‘I was very happy indeed to be nominated for the Critical Thinking Award. To win it, was absolutely lovely, if not more than a little surprising given the stiff competition. The Partnership Awards here at Leeds are a great way of recognising and rewarding the mutuality of the experience of teaching and learning within the University.

The Critical Thinking Award in particular, stresses the importance of active learning both informed by and encouraging critical engagement with the subject. Being involved in teaching which is directly related to my own research definitely pays off as I find it relatively easy to stimulate students because I find my subject so dynamic and fascinating. Their input is incredibly important to me indeed, and has on many occasions helped me to formulate new ways of thinking.‘

Winner - Jake Rylatt Nominated by Emma Bates ‘This year running has the committee has been made substantially easier through the help and support that we have received from Jake acting as School Rep.

His contacts with the Law School have been invaluable in helping improve not only the society but also the Law School

as a whole. His work didn’t end there and his contribution to the society as Mooting Sec on the committee has truly changed the whole status of the society. Taking the Mooting final to the Supreme Court has put Leeds, Leeds Law School and Leeds Law Society on the map and will no doubt have an impact in years to come. His role as both School Rep and Committee Member has brought the two facets of School and Society together bridging the gap

between staff and students and generating much more of a community within the building. His impact has been so great that the society are now working with the Law School to develop to a role on the committee for the School Rep to continue the communication and success from this year. Jake has gone above and beyond in every aspect of his role this year leaving his successor with a very tough act to follow.’

‘She helped me (and many others I’m sure) to get back on my feet and finish my course when I thought it would be impossible. It’s amazing how one person can make such a difference to so many students and staff, and make a huge contribution to such an important area.’

Winner - Jonathan Mound Nominated by Philippa Demonte ‘Jon has been the undergraduate course convener for Geophysical Sciences for the past 5/6 years. He has given us students constructive feedback not just on our coursework with him, but on CVs, work / further study applications, and other peripherals. The reason I have nominated Jon though is because he is one of the few lecturers who actually listens to the feedback us students give to him, and then

makes positive changes. This applies both to the geophysical sciences degree programme as a whole, and to the specific modules which Jon teaches. For example, as a result of student feedback 3 years ago, as of last year Jon started recording the audio from his lectures, syncing them to his lecture slides, and making these available on the VLE. For those of us who need a little extra time to get our heads around difficult scientific concepts or for international students where English is not their native language this has

proved invaluable; we can go back and listen to the lectures in our own time, multiple times, until we fully understand the content. In another example, as a result of student feedback, Jon is making changes to the field trips and practical skills provided by the degree programme. Future students will benefit not only from more training, but more relevant training for careers specifically in geophysical sciences. This will give geophysics students from Leeds an even greater edge over our competitors from other universities upon graduation.’

Communication between students and their lecturers is essential to ensure that students get the most out of their time at university. Obviously if students don’t know where they’ve gone wrong (and where they’ve gone right!) they can’t easily improve in the future; and it is also true that the assortment of module, program and university surveys that students fill out help staff improve what they do. In both cases, having the feedback is just the first step, we then need to think about that feedback and use it to keep continually improving.’

Winner - Liane Hobson Nominated by Claire Smith ‘Liane has been proactive in working with fellow students on her own Biodiversity & Conservation Masters programme as well as students on the other Biological Sciences Bioscience Masters Programme.

‘As the Taught Post-Graduate School Representative for the Faculty of Biological Sciences, I have been working really closely with both students and staff.

They [the staff] take all feedback on board and see what could be done about the suggestions that have been provided by students. This has led to improvements this year whilst the courses were running, but even more will be implemented for next year. I feel everyone knows that this will massively improve what were already amazing courses and help students get the most out of their time at Leeds.

My biggest allies throughout everything I’ve done have been the FBS graduate office staff,

who have continually gone above and beyond the call of duty to help however they can.’

‘During November’s Community Religions Project events Jo volunteered to take responsibility for the co-ordination of students undertaking fieldwork at Leeds City Museum, and then to assist with the reception held in the evening. She was an excellent ambassador for Theology and Religious Studies at Leeds and undertook the role with professionalism and enthusiasm.’

Winner - John Barrett Nominated by Ruth Bush, Andy Dixon, Clare Linton ‘We are currently undertaking an integrated MSc and PhD in Low Carbon Technologies and we would like to nominate Professor John Barrett for the lectures and seminars he runs as part of our MSc module in Climate Change Mitigation.

John incorporates the latest elements of his own research areas as well as those of colleagues into lectures to give us a new perspective on these fast moving issues. Climate Change Negotiations’ to challenge and engage us on complicated issues. John clearly enjoys stimulating discussions amongst his students and his enthusiasm spreads amongst the group. For a group made up of quite a few people with science and engineering backgrounds, John has managed to engage us in new areas of policy and politics that we will be able to include in our PhD research to bring an interdisciplinary perspective to our projects. On top of all this, it is the first year that he has taught this course and he has put an incredible amount of effort making the course a success for all of his students!’

They created really fun teaser trailers for YouTube, used Facebook, Twitter and Blogging to create a “buzz” about the event.’

The final award was the Partnership Award. It wasn’t an award that we set out to give but through the

selection process it was clear that certain people or groups had been recognised for their work throughout

the year, being nominated in numerous categories and by various people, students and staff alike. This goes to the person/group of people that embody the Partnership, showing absolute commitment to the

agreement in all areas of their work.

Here are just some of the nominations within the Institute: ‘I am nominating these students [Psychology Enterprise] in my role as Head of Institute. The students have transformed the Institute through their collaborative efforts with staff. I have been humbled by their endeavours and I am extremely grateful for their help in driving forward the partnership relationship within IPS. It is hard to express the magnitude of

the contribution made by these students - they are truly worthy of this award.’

‘Despite her hectic work life, Professor Louise Dye is unrelenting in her support for others. She is the first to respond with offers of help when asked, thinks creatively about ways to develop staff and passes on contacts and opportunities on a weekly basis. Her enthusiasm for others work is incredibly supportive, and has been an outstanding support to me over the years. ‘Siobhan (Hugh-Jones) has worked tirelessly to establish the Institute of Psychological Sciences’ (IPS) Enterprise Scheme - a scheme allowing all Psychology students to further their involvement in the Institute and gain recognition for their contributions. Through the Enterprise Scheme, just this year IPS has seen the successful launch of its first student magazine; the establishment of a partnership group between IPS and local charities; our first

Facebook page, open to both staff and students, for informal course support; and increased numbers Student Ambassadors helping welcome new students into the Institute. Siobhan has been crucial in the success of all of these ventures, and students involved in the Enterprise Scheme feel she deserves University recognition for helping to further develop the Partnership at a departmental level.’
