Center forGlobal Environmental Research

Along with gaining an understanding of the current circumstances of the global environment, we clarify the causes for changes in that environment. Based on this, we carry out surveys and research in order to make assessments and predictions about the future course of global environmental changes and the risks these entail.

In addition, we carry out various research into measures aimed at conservation of the global environment.

Contributing solutions to global environmental issues, with an emphasis on climate change

Center for Material Cycles and Waste Management Research

We carry out surveys and research to clarify the realities surrounding -and to make long-term forecasts regarding - the materials used by societies. At the same time we study the environmental burden which accompanies that usage. In addition, we assess materials both as potential resources and for their toxic properties.

Along with conducting research into resource cycles and the appropriate disposal of waste and sewage, we develop techniques, and implement research, relating to practical regional applications which will help make environmental recovery and renewal a reality.

Contributing solutions for sustainable usage of resources and the reduction of

the environmental waste which accompanies that use

Center forEnvironmental Risk Research

We carry out surveys and research aimed at clarifying the environmental risk posed by chemicals and understanding the pathways through which humans and wildlife are exposed to these chemicals - as well as their environmental fate. We then develop exposure assessment methodologies.

In addition, we investigate the toxic mechanisms of chemicals and innovate in the methods for their assessment, in order to evaluate the impact of environmental exposure on human health and ecosystems.

Contributing to the reduction of risk to human health and ecosystems through the

assessment and control of environmental risk

Center for Regional Environmental Research

The environmental impacts of human activities are felt both by humans and ecosystems through the atmosphere, water and soil. We carry out research to clarify occurrence mechanisms for regional environmental issues over multiple scales ‒ from local and urban scales to trans‒boundary scales, in Asia and Japan.

In addition, we carry out research aimed at finding solutions to regional environmental issues and their applications in the real world.

Contributing solutions to environmental problems both domestically and throughout Asia

Center for Environmental Biology and Ecosystem Studies

We are implementing research to reveal the structure and functions of ecosystems over various spatial and temporal scales.

We also implement research to clarify the impact of human activities on ecosystems and biodiversity.

Contributing to the realization of sustainable ecosystem services and the

conservation of biodiversity

Culture strains of cyanobacteria, eukaryotic microalgae, protozoa and endangered algae are maintained in the Microbial Culture Collection at the National Institute for Environmental Studies (NIES Collection). These strains are available for educational, research and developmental purposes. NIES Collection accepts the deposition of strains, which are important for environmental as well as basic and applied researches.

Along with clarifying and evaluating the mechanisms and effects on human health of chemical pollutants, we develop convenient and speedy evaluation methods for exposure and health effects. Also, having made clear the effects that the environment has on health. we carry out epidemiological surveys and research in order to investigate the causes of these effects.

National Core Center of the Japan Environment and Children’s Study

We are responsible as the core center for the comprehensive management and operation of the Ministry of the Environment’s “Japan Environment and Children’s Study”.

Center for Social and Environmental Systems Research

With a broad research vision of “Mankind and the environment”, we carry out surveys and research to clarify the connection between society’s economic activity and environmental issues - in order to create scenarios and roadmaps.

These go towards creating a sustainable society which reconciles the environment with the economy.

Contributing to integrated societal changes in order to make society’s economic activity

sustainable

Center for Environmental Measurement and Analysis

We develop methodologies to better understand and monitor environmental conditions and changes, combined with methodologies to assess the biological impact of environmental stress. We also forward measurement techniques and technologies which contribute towards identifying the warning signs of new environmental deterioration by developing and optimizing surveys and research.

In addition, we implement research aimed at the development of techniques to preserve and use environmental samples in order to further assure the reliability of measurement data and its proper management.

Contributing to the appropriate management of measurement data and the assurance of its

reliability with revolutionary developments in environmental measurement technologies
