SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY

GYNANDROMORPHS

Why in news? Researchers say that the study of gynandromorphs could offer clues as to why some human diseases strike one gender more than the other. About Gynandromorphs Gynandromorphs (“gyne” from Greek meaning female, “andro” for

male, and “morph” meaning variety) are individual animals that have both genetically male and female tissues and often have observable male and female characteristics.

They may be 1. Bilateral, appearing to divide down the middle into male and

female sides, or 2. Mosaic, with patches characteristic of one sex appearing in a

body part characteristic of the other sex. Gynandromorphs occur in insects, spiders, crustaceans, and other

arthropods as well as in birds. They are most dramatic in those butterfly species in which the male

and female wing colors and patterns are dramatically different. How gynandromorphy occur in birds? It occurs naturally, usually resulting from a random genetic error. The egg normally carries one sex chromosome to unite with the single

sex chromosome carried by the sperm, but if an egg accidentally ends up with two chromosomes—a Z and a W—and if this aberrant egg is fertilized by two Z-carrying sperm, the bird that results will have some ZZ cells and some ZW cells and it may have both male and female physical characteristics.

CULTURE

TITANWALA MUSEUM

Why in news? Union Textiles Minister inaugurated the 'Titanwala Museum' in Bagru, Rajasthan that showcases the Chhipa community's hand-block printing. Who is Chhipa? Chhipa people of India lived first in Nagaur in the State of Rajasthan. The word "Chhipa" comes from the Gujarati word "Chhapa" which

means to print. Chhipa people now live mainly in Rajasthan and Gujarat. What is hand block printing? Block printing was introduced to the Jaipur region of Rajasthan by the

Chhipa community. A print starts with the design, drawn on paper and carved into the

Sheesham wood block. Designs are meticulously carved by hand into the blocks. The physical block is the design for a single repeat which is then

stamped in rows across the fabric.

SECURITY

MIRAGE 2000, SPICE 2000, CRYSTAL MAZE, NETRA AND PHALCON

Why in news? India used Mirage 2000 jets, SPICE 2000 bombs, Crystal Maze missiles, and Netra and Phalcon AWACS systems for its air strike on terrorist camps across the border. About Mirage 2000 The Dassault Mirage 2000 is a French-made multirole, single-engine,

fourth-generation jet fighter.

The Mirage 2000 evolved into a multirole aircraft with several variants developed.

The Indian Air Force (IAF) became the first foreign user of the aircraft type in 1985.

The Mirage 2000 performed remarkably well during the whole conflict in the high Himalayas during the Kargil War.

It is armed with laser-guided weapons such as the ‘Vajra’. About SPICE 2000 SPICE is a guidance kit powered by electro-optics and global

positioning system for converting unguided air-droppable bombs into precision guided bombs.

It was developed by Israel. It combines the advantages of satellite guidance and those of

electro-optical guidance into one bomb. Satellite guidance allows to engage camouflaged and hidden

targets; to provide a "drop-and-forget" option; to operate in all weather and lighting conditions.

Electro-optical guidance allows "man-in-the-loop" guidance; to engage relocatable targets; independence from external information sources like satellites.

About Crystal Maze It is an Israeli missile based on the standoff air-to-surface missile (ASM)

family Popeye. It is powered by a Single-stage Solid-fuel rocket engine. These missiles are capable of hitting targets on the ground as well as

sea 80-100 kilometres away. The missile is extremely accurate with a Circular Error Probable (CEP)

of less than three metres and carries an 80-kilogramme warhead. About DRDO NETRA AEW&CS It is a project of Defence Research and Development Organisation to

develop an airborne early warning and control system for the Indian Air Force.

An airborne early warning and control (AEW&C) system is an airborne radar picket system designed to detect aircraft, ships and vehicles at long ranges.

Based on this it performs command and control of the battlespace in an air engagement by directing fighter and attack aircraft strikes.

They are also used in surveillance and command and control, battle management (C2BM) functions.

The aircraft developed under this project was used in the airstrikes. About Phalcon AEW&C It is also an Israeli developed airborne early warning and control

(AEW&C) radar system. Its primary objective is to provide intelligence to maintain air superiority

and conduct surveillance. The system is currently in-service with the Indian Air Force. It is described as the most advanced AEW&C system in the world.

WORLD AFFAIRS

CITY OF ANGKOR AND ANGKOR WAT TEMPLE

Why in news? Researchers suggest that the Cambodian city of Angkor which houses the Angkor Wat temple underwent a gradual decline in occupation rather than an abrupt collapse. About Angkor The city of Angkor extends over approximately 400 square kilometres

and consists of scores of temples, hydraulic structures such as basins, reservoirs and canals as well as communication routes.

It is surrounded by dense jungle and was once the thriving capital of the ancient Khmer Empire.

The city was abandoned in 1431 A.D. for reasons only explained through theories.

It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. About Angkor Wat Temple It is a temple complex in Angkor, Cambodia considered to be the

largest Hindu Temple in the World. It was originally constructed as a Hindu temple dedicated to the god

Vishnu for the Khmer Empire. But it was gradually transformed into a Buddhist temple towards the end

of the 12th century. It was built by the Khmer King Suryavarman II (completed by

Jayavarman VII) The temple is at the top of the high classical style of Khmer architecture. It has become a symbol of Cambodia, appearing on its national flag,

and it is the country's prime attraction for visitors.
