The 2006 Swarthmore men’s cross country teamlooks to improve upon its third place finish at the2005 Centennial Conference championship meet.Led by All Mid-East Region and All-Centennial sen-ior Vernon Chaplin (Indian Springs, AL / IndianSprings), the Garnet will rely on a number of youngrunners to contribute to the team’s success.
Chaplin, running cross country for the first timein 2005, earned second team A l l - C e n t e n n i a lConference; finishing eleventh in the championshipmeet at Johns Hopkins on Oct. 29. He then ran 26thout of 280 runners the following weekend at theMid-East Regional meet in Carlisle, Pa. (narrowlymissing a national qualifier spot), leading theGarnet to a seventh-place finish. Chaplin was alsonamed to the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District II College Division Men's Track &Field/Cross Country first team and was selected forthe inaugural Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team.
Joining Chaplin will be juniors Ross Weller(McConnellsburg, PA / Mercersburg Academy) andJonathan Shoop (Reno, NV / Incline), both of whomfinished in the top-25 at the CentennialChampionships. Sophomores Eric Saka (Quincy, IL/ Quincy) and Dan Hodgson (Trumbell, CT /Fairfield Prep) will also be looking to build onstrong freshman campaigns.
The Garnet open up the 2006 season onSaturday, Sept. 2 vs. Chestnut Hill College at FortWashington Park, and then will compete in theannual Garnet Alumni Meet a week later. On Sept.22 the team travels to Haverford College for theH a v e r f o rd Invitational, facing teams fro mVillanova, the College of New Jersey, andElizabethtown. On October 7, the Garnet will runin the Dickinson Long/Short Meet, getting a goodlook at the course at Carlisle High School, site of the2006 Centennial Conference Championships onOctober 28.
School indoor mile re c o rd holder Ve r n o nChaplin ’07 will once again lead the Swarthmoretrack & field program in 2007. Along with takingdown a 34 year old mark, Chaplin won two medalson indoor and outdoor Centennial Confere n c erelays in 2005-06. Ross Weller ’08 added a bronzemedal to his resume in the conference steeplechase.Also in conference competition, quarter miler MattSchiller ’07 scored in his specialty event (400meters) in a personal best time.
Connor Darby ’09 received his championshipbaptism by making the final and scoring sixth in the800 meters outdoors. Dillon McGrew ’08 won hissecond career 3200 meter relay medal (7:54.83) as he“set the table” for his three teammates. Jon Shoop‘08 scored in the steeplechase in only this thirdattempt ever at the event. Look for the Garnet tobring home more medals and break more schoolrecords in 2006.

Head Coach: Peter Carroll
After a two-year stint coaching at Swarthmorefrom 1988 to 1989, followed by 11 years at Franklin& Marshall, Peter Carroll returned to coach theGarnet in 2000. In his tenure at F&M, Carrollcoached seven All-Americans and more than 20school record-holders. His 1999 men’s indoor trackand field team won the Centennial ConferenceChampionship.
Coach Carroll’s troops broke two more schoolrecords during the 2005-06 track & field seasonbringing the total to 38 in his eight seasons atSwarthmore. Carroll has also coached eight All-Americans, four Centennial Conference Performersof the Year, and 14 National Qualifiers during in histime at the College.
C a r roll earned bachelor’s (biology, ‘82) andmaster’s (secondary education, ‘85) degrees fromVillanova University. He also studied extensivelyin the physical education sports medicine graduateprogram at Ithaca College, N.Y.
As an undergraduate student, Carroll was amember of the Villanova track and cross-countryteams. He won Big East and IC4A championshipswhile on the Wildcats’ 2-mile relay team and fin-ished second in the Big East indoor 1,500-meter runin his senior season. Carroll’s personal best mile is4:02.34.
Assistant Coaches:
John JaudonJaudon begins his ninth season as an assistant
coach with the Swarthmore track-and-field pro-gram, primarily coaching the sprint events. Jaudonwas a four-time Division II All-American at 800meters while attending Johnson C. SmithUniversity.
A native of Philadelphia, Pa., Jaudon earnedAll-American honors running the 800 at the leg-endary track-and-field powerhouse Overbro o kHigh School. Before coming to Swarthmore, Jaudonreturned to his alma mater, guiding the Overbrookmen’s track-and-field team to the indoor statechampionship and the Philadelphia Public Schoolchampionship.
John NoonNoon enters his eighth season as an assistant
c ross-country and track-and-field coach atSwarthmore. Noon works with the cross-countryteam and the middle-distance runners. Noon grad-uated from Drexel University with a degree inmechanical engineering. At Drexel, Noon was a 2-year captain of the track team and a 4-year letterwinner. Noon won a gold medal at the NorthAtlantic Conference Championships as a memberof the 4x100 relay squad and holds a school recordwith the 4x400 indoor team.
Before Swarthmore, Noon served as an assis-tant coach of the Drexel cross-country and tracksquads from 1996 to 1998.
Noon earned a master’s degree in bioengineer-ing from the University of Pennsylvania and cur-rently works as a biomechanical engineer.

The College’s 330-acre campus, located 20 minutes by local trainfrom Philadelphia, has facilities comparable to many large univer-sities. Its 10 academic buildings have extensive laboratories, class-rooms, and other resources for the sciences, engineering, comput-er science, social sciences, and the humanities. Well-equipped com-puter facilities are always open for student use.
Three libraries, a music building, and a performing arts centerprovide extensive resources for study, research, and performance.Students also enjoy a central dining hall, student center,Intercultural Center, Black Cultural Center, Women’s ResourceCenter, Community Resource Center, and both coed and single-sexresidence halls with telephone and computer network connectionsin every room.
Swarthmore’s student-faculty ratio is 8 to 1, among the lowestin the country. Students work closely with outstanding scholarswho are committed to teaching.
Athletics are an integral part of the Swarthmore education.The College’s athletic teams have garnered many league titles,playoff berths, and conference records. Swarthmore athletes havewon All-American honors in numerous sports: 90 in men’s soccer,51 in men’s tennis, 43 in men’s and women’s swimming, 30 inmen’s lacrosse, 16 in men’s and women’s track and field, nine inwomen’s lacrosse, four in women’s basketball, four in women’stennis, two each in football and field hockey, and one in crosscountry. Six Swarthmore athletes have been inducted into theNational Lacrosse Hall of Fame, two in to the National FootballHall of Fame, and one into the National Baseball Hall of Fame.Four men’s tennis teams have won NCAA Championships andtwo men’s lacrosse teams have captured National Championships.
In 2005-06, 73 Swarthmore athletes were represented on theCentennial Conference Academic Honor Roll, 12 athletes wereselected for the inagural Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Areateams, and one athlete was named ESPN the Magazine AcademicAll-American. Swarthmore has produced 16 Rhodes Scholars; andtwo alumni, Lee MacPhail Jr. and Neil Austrian, have served asp residents of baseball’s American League and the NationalFootball League, respectively.
