From the MRAS President….. Greetings from the Track!

A warm welcome from the Millarville Racing and Agriculture Society!

With summer well in sight, we are gearing up for a great July 1st event

with the 113th running of the Millarville Races along with celebrating

the 151th anniversary of Canada. Races begin at 12 noon, gates open

at 10am. A part of this celebration is the 3rd annual Millarville Derby

VIP experience. See the website for further details. Thank you to

Anna DePoli and her team for leading this event.

We had a successful opening of our 2018 Farmers’ Market with the

Half Marathon bringing in well over 800 runners to the site. We

continue to see success for this event and continue to look for events

that enhance the experience of the Farmers’ Market. Thank you to

Rick Charlton for leading this event! Well done.

Thank you to Nancy Seaman and the volunteers for a successful golf

tournament. It was a great day for the event and great prizes were

shared by many.

Event planning for the Millarville Heritage Rodeo is well underway.

The 22nd rodeo will include a sanctioned FCA event and a family

Cabaret featuring the country band The Backroad Traveler Band.

On the staffing front, we welcome Karla Lawson as our bookkeeper and

our summer students helping with maintenance and front reception.

On the arena rebuild, the board approved Ironwood Building Corp. as

the design builder for the new arena. First step is for Ironwood Building

Corp., under contract, to design the arena for submission to the MD of

Foothills. Subject to funding and other customary conditions with

building permitting and similar items, we hope to have shovels in the

ground in August 2018. To that end, we have launched our $1,000

giving campaign and encourage all members to contribute to the

rebuild.

More details on the rebuild and campaign are included in this issue of

Track Watch. Remember we are building for the future!

Should you have any questions, please drop me a message at

Brent Foster

111th Priddis & Millarville Fair Country Trails & Barnyard Tails - August 18 &19, 2018 Do you have your copy of the fair book yet? Hard copies are available in the MRAS office and at select locations in the MD. You can also access the book from the fair page on the MRAS website. If you have any questions or can’t find the book, contact us at [email protected] and we’ll get you fixed up. The online entry system is up and running! Log into Showorks and pick the classes you want to enter. Paper entry forms can be found in the back of the fair book. Drop off, scan and email or mail in your entries by the deadline of August 3, 2018. We have TWO NEW ways to reward our exhibitors this year:

• Early Bird Entry Draw – submit and pay for your entries by August 1 and your name will be entered into a draw for a $100 cash prize.

• Premier Exhibitor Award – points-based system for determining the exhibitor with the highest point count in each bench department – Arts & Handicrafts, Fibre Arts, Field Crops, Flowers, Home Cooking & Baking, Vegetables & Fruit and Woodworking. Winners of first, second and third place in each class will be awarded 3, 2 or 1 point respectively. In the event of a tie, the exhibitor with the most first place wins will be given the award. Winners in both Adult and Junior departments will receive a certificate and $25.

Tickets for the annual Fair raffle are selling quickly. There is one grand prize this year and it’s a good one – a hand crafted 2-seater rail porch rocker (made by our own Don Arkes), a $300 meat package from Red Deer Lake Meats, portable propane BBQ and utensil set from Rona Black Diamond. Tickets are $5 each. This is a fundraiser for the Fair and Rowan House Emergency Shelter. Watch for our booth at each Farmers’ Market and throughout Fair weekend. The draw will be made on Sunday August 19. We are looking for more volunteers for shifts from August 16 to 22 for a variety of tasks. If you want to be part of the fun, please contact Gail Dziuba at: [email protected] . She will match you up with a shift that fits with your interests, skills and availability. The only reason we can charge so little at the gate is because of tremendous community financial support. If you would like to help out, our donation form is on the MRAS website. The Fair book lists all donors on record in early April. We are truly grateful for all donations and will have complete donor lists posted in prominent locations around the racetrack on Fair weekend.

Hello everyone: The tarp sale is completed, and the committee is happy

to say that it was a success!!!! We sold over 14 tarps and had 11 C&C

event drivers attend. Not bad for a first-time event like this at the MRAS

facility. The committee would also like to inform anyone interested in a

tarp that there are a few still available and can be purchased through

the MRAS. If you are interested, please call the MRAS office at 403-931-

3411 and they will be able to assist you.

Majorville Early 1940’s Home Camp ? Sheep Creek School ? Kew

Evansville Bullville ? ? ?

Submitted by Ev Prestie & Lorretta Stabler Historical Committee

Many small communities sprung up because of the discovery of oil & gas in the Turner Valley area at this time. Some can be located by caragana bushes and rhubarb in the old town sites. Some of these communities had a store, coffee shop etc. Majorville, Bullville, Home Oil Camp and Evansville, and Kew (which was a ranching centre) were in the Millarville area. Some of the others were: Naptha, Mercury, Hartell and Longview and Royalties. Longview and Royalties were called Little New York and Little Chicago. Longview is still there, and Royalties was just on top of the hill north of Longview.

Majorville was located a few kilometres west of the hamlet of Millarville, where the first Sheep Creek School was.

Majorville Area Map Legend

1. Sheep Creek School building had 2 rooms, a library and a basement for Grades 4 – 12. It has since 1950-51 been

moved to Millarville hamlet, now known as Millarville Community School. The front 2 rooms were part of the original

school.

1A. Sheep Creek School was a one roomed school for Grades 1-3. It has since been moved to the Ballyhamage school

site which is now the Leighton Centre. The year the schools were moved, students went to school at the Home Oil Camp

Recreation Building.

2. There were two small two roomed houses called teacherages for the teacher’s residences.

3. Home Oil Tank Farm

4. Mr. and Mrs. Wheaton, Roxanne

5. Skating Rink – the men on night shift at the Tank Farm kept the rink shovelled and flooded for the kids. It was always

appreciated.

20. Mr. & Mrs. Jim Frazer, Doreen & Kay, now the home of Judy Friesen, Justin & Jolene & family

21. Mr. & Mrs. Joe Raymond – One day Mom (Merle Backs) said to my four-year-

old brother Bob, “Eat your porridge or you’re not going to get big like Uncle Joe.

Bob replied, “Gee Mom. Mrs. Raymond sure must eat a lot of porridge because she sure has a fat little tummy

on her.” Mom chuckled as she knew that Mrs. Raymond was expecting a baby any day.

One day there was a jar with a sign on it “For the Blind”. A short time later, the jar wasn’t

there. Merle Backs with change in her hand said, “Where’s the jar?”

Jean or Josphine said, “Oh, please don’t tell anyone. We needed a blind for that big

window because it was so hot in here. So, as soon as we had enough change, we took the

jar down.”

ACREAGE DEVELOPMENT

SOLUTIONS LTD. Advice:

Be mindful of the maintenance

over your septic. Keep the grass

mowed to an average height, you

want the septic system to be able

to breathe, just don't cut it so

short it kills the grass and invites

weeds to take over.

Long grass holds more water,

creates more shade and

diminishes the oxygen transfer to

the soil reducing the air supply to

the “good bugs” treating your

sewage. Try to keep the weeds to

a minimum too!
