The Fiera di Milano, for example, exploiting the dense industrial fabric of the Po valley, has acquired weight and international stature, while Palermo - at the other end of the peninsula - aspires to become the crossroads of the Mediterra- nean. And there is also the Fiera di Longarone (in the province of Belluno) - probably less well known than the others - which was inaugurated in 1959 and set down its roots determinedly after the Vajont dam disaster in 1963, which claimed 2,000 vic- tims; Vicenza, on the other hand, grew up around the area's goldsmiths. It is precisely because of the close ties between events and the territory that has led the Ita- lian trade fair system to deve- lop so extensively throughout the peninsula - unlike in Ger- many, where events are con- centrated in six centres (Hano- ver, Frankfurt, Cologne , Dus- seldorf, Munich and Berlin) - or in France, where Paris is the star. Instead, in Italy there are more than 1,000 trade fairs, most of them small, though the system is settling into a concen- tration of 60% of events in the major regions (Lombardy, Emilia-Romagna, the Veneto, Tuscany and Lazio). Localism very frequently functions as a filter and stimulates firms which, starting in the territory, can measure themselves with competitors and clients and then evolve on a more ambi- tious scale. The history of Italian firms reveals a growing virtuous relationship between industrial districts and trade fairs, which showcase competences and skills. The fairs are not only a window on the world of local productivity, but also a point for producers and distributors from other countries to meet and compare: at Carrara for the marble industry, Parma for agricultural and food products, Turin for books, Verona for wine, Cernobbio for textiles and Ancona for fishing. These are just some examples of a scenario in which Italian firms, 90% of which are of small or medium size, attend trade fairs to find interlocutors which otherwise they would never encounter. In turn, firms in pro- ductive districts, at the same time allies and competitors, use fairs to valorize the competen- ces, the production chains and the synergies of the sector. Which Italian sectors aremost attractive to forei-gners?

It is difficult to say, butrecently the most popularhave been logistics, theenvironment, advancedtechnology and biotechno-logy: all segments enjoyingstrong growth in ourcountry.

And trade fairs? What doesIce do to support them?

Our country organizes moretrade fair events than anyother. The furniture show,agriculture and food events,the fairs of Bologna andBari, the Fiera del Levante:these are just some exam-ples in a thriving sector. Wehave a kaleidoscope of ini-tiatives which satisfydemand from around theworld. For this reason we atIce organize missions ofoperators from the most

interested countries to bringthem to events, fixingappointments with entrepre-neurs and sessions fortesting new products.

What is the philosophybehind these meetings?

To match internationaldemand with Italian offer.Everything is meticulouslyand painstakingly organi-zed. We have had a lot ofvery positive feedback (forexample from eyewear, fur-niture and footwear manu-facturers). We also have asoftware system which mat-ches demand and offer: sowe can control and monitorthe outcome of each event.

And what about Italiantrade fairs abroad?

We are making great strides.In Russia, in Moscow we par-ticipate in the most important

What does the future hold?

With the Fiera di Verona wehave a project for China,Japan and Russia involvingwine trade products. Vini-taly is a meeting point fordemand and offer. With theFiera di Milano we are wor-king on convincing many ofour neighbours (around theMediterranean, Tunisia) ofits great potential.

Our parti-cipation at all the principaltrade fair events around theworld is growing continually.

What are the most popu-lar sectors for Italians ininternational fairs?

Practically all of them.From cars to furniture, fas-hion to textiles, agricultureand food to utensils: thereis an increasingly active andexpert Italian participationin all the principal seg-ments. But I need to stressanother very importantfunction of Italian tradefairs.

Aefi's plans to support Italian products around the world

For some time now Aefi has beenactively supporting "made in Italy"

throughout the world. In recent years,in fact, the association has been wor-king to promote awareness of the use-fulness of the trade fair system to boostexports, but also to gather up to dateinformation on the global trade fairsystem and how it is evolving. Activi-ties to support internationalization offairs are also undertaken by monitoringthe situations in different countries incollaboration with the Ministry of Eco-nomic Development and Ice. As well asinitiating contacts with internationalassociations in various countries Aefialso organizes a rich calendar ofappointments, meetings, conventions,both at home and abroad, on the theme

of internationalization of small andmedium sized firms through the tradefair system and the strategic importan-ce of developing international allianceswhich has attracted considerable inte-rest from international operators andhas led to the initiation of contacts. Inthe ambit of activities to promote thetrade fair system in the world Aefi haseven set up a service to promote anddevelop collaboration agreements in thesector, with three objectives. Stimulatecontact with international trade fairassociations with offers of collabora-tion, convey any proposals to Italiantrade fairs and assist Italian operators inthis dialogue, also through activation ofcontacts with the relevant organizations(Ice, Simest etc.).

Trade fairs, an overseas ally for small companiesWith exhibitions abroad our firms are raising their visibility and increasing penetration in markets

In the last two years Lombardy has invested 20 million to attain this objective

Trade fairs help small andmedium sized enterprises

to penetrate the most attractiveand interesting foreign mar-kets. At a local level in Italythere is a growing number ofinitiatives to support firms

abroad. An example? The fairsin Emilia Romagna wereamong the first to showcase Ita-lian products in internationalevents dedicated to mechanics,ceramics, healthcare, tourismand leisure activities. And the

Region can boast three interna-tional fairs par excellence -Bologna, Parma and Rimini. The Lombardy Region and theLombardy Chambers of Com-merce have allotted 20 millioneuro, between 2007 and 2008,

to encourage the internationali-zation of small and mediumsized enterprises in Lombardy,which, through an ad hocdecree, have been officiallyrequested to present proposalsfor participation in internatio-nal trade fairs in Italy andabroad, or undertake trade mis-sions overseas. Five thousandvouchers have been distributed(this is the technical term forthe "ticket " enterprises needfor access to events) at a cost of11.3 million euro. Vouchers canbe obtained from recentlyinstalled automatic dispensers.Another step forward to streng-then the ties and synergies bet-ween trade fairs and small andmedium sized enterprises.

In March the second editionof Sia Guest Dubai was held

in Abu Dhabi in the PersianGulf, organized by RiminiFiera, in which Italian hoteliersdisplayed the best of Italianhospitality to the market of theUnited Arab Emirates. At thesame time the first edition ofSun Dubai was held, dedicatedto outdoor pursuits, a partners-hip between Rimini Fiera andFiere & Comunicazioni: SunDubai also aimed to matchoffer (in this case the best Ita-lian range of outdoor furnitu-re) with a strongly growingdemand, increasingly intere-sted in style and innovation. There was success for the 2008

edition of "Ecomondo Russia-Mosca verso Kyoto", whichRimini Fiera organized in theRussian capital from April 1-4in partnership with theMinistry of the Environmentand Protection of the Land andSea and the Emilia RomagnaRegion. The event hosted agroup of Italian companies thathad met the principal Russianelectricity producers at Tek2008, an energy forum organi-zed at the Kremlin at whicharound 5 thousand delegatesfrom the Russian establishmentparticipated. Rimini Fiera also has a closepartnership with Frozen des-serts Usa, a global organizer of

trade fairs which leads the USsegment of bread-making andconfectionery exhibitions, con-stituting a joint venture newcofor the new Sigep Usa event.This show, specializing in ice-cream, will be held annuallyalternating between AtlanticCity and Las Vegas. In 2008 itwill be held in Atlantic City atthe Convention Center fromSeptember 21 - 23. There are 20thousand square metres of exhi-bition space and 100 exhibitors.

Finally, Rimini Fiera has madealliances in Brazil with FithepMercosur do Brasil (in SanPaolo), a biennial confectio-nery event, and in China withEcomondo China, a collectiveof Italian companies in theenvironmental sector. In total,in 2007, Rimini Fiera organi-zed 1,231 business meetingsinvolving 415 Italian compa-nies and 173 foreign buyersfrom 29 countries.

Big growth in 2007 for turnover and margins

The figures

Rimini Fiera grew consi-derably in 2007. The

annual general meetingapproved the consolidatedearnings of 81.3 million euro(+ 10.8% compared to 2005,a significantly comparableyear) with a gross operatingmargin of 18.4 million (+

6.4% on 2005). Also at thegeneral meeting last May 27,the partners of Rimini Fiera(most of the capital is held bythe Province, the Municipa-lity and the Chamber of Com-merce, with equal shares andthe remaining 15% by priva-te shareholders) examined

and approved the group's fiveyear business plan. Rimini's new trade fairdistrict, inaugurated in 2001,covers an area of 460 thousandsquare metres (160 thousandsquare metres of green space)with a railway station on theMilan-Bari line and a helipad.

Entirely on one level, thedistrict has 169 thousand squa-re meres of usable space, 109thousand square metres ofexhibition space, 59 squaremetres of services, 16 singlelevel pavilions and 10,600 par-king places including campervan facilities.

Veronafiere lays greatimportance on promotio-

nal activities abroad, essentialfor development of the struc-ture and the business opportu-nities of exhibiting compa-nies. The objective is to valo-rize the brands of the principalevents in markets with a highpotential for development andof primary interest for exhibi-tors: Eastern Europe, the US,China, Japan, Russia, Braziland the ex Soviet republics.The calendar abroad for 2008has included so far, Vinitaly

India, a show of Italian qualitywines, (January 15 in Mumbaiand January 17 in New Delhi),Vinitaly U.S. Tour Miami (ashow of wines, oil and typicalItalian products, February 11 +12) and Palm Beach (February13), Vinitaly Russia inMoscow, June 9+10 and SaintPetersburg on June 12. Thehome furnishings event "Abi-tare il Tempo" entitled "LaCasa Italiana", was held fromJune 4-29 in San Paolo delBrasile at the Museo Brasilei-ro da Escultura. In autumn it is

the turn of the Samoter TourKazakhstan (October 1), ofMarmomacc Usa-StonExpo,on October 16 in Las Vegas:an agreement has just beenreached by the Fiera di Vero-na and Hanley Wood Exhibi-tions which, among its nume-rous activities aimed at archi-tects and designers, has rati-fied the creation of a co-brand- StonExpo Marmomacc Ame-ricas. From October 27-30,the Vinitaly U.S. Tour (Italianquality wines) will be in Chi-cago, New York and Washing-

ton.In November VinitalyJapan will be in Tokyo on the17th, for its tenth edition, andin Shanghai the 19th, Beijingthe 20th and Macao on the22nd. The year closes with theSamoter Tour Russia (in Kra-snodar, in December, a showof earth moving machines forthe building trade).

Veronafiere also has closestrategic partnerships to raiseits visibility abroad. Amongits partners are the multina-tional, Reed Exhibitions,Monacofiere, Fiere di Parma,and Shanghai InternationalExhibition Centre. Not forget-ting Veronafiere's involve-ment in the implementation ofEuropean programmes. Cur-rently underway is the "pro-getto Uiv - Unione italianavini", in partnership with theEnte di Viale del Lavoro, topromote quality Europeanwines in the emerging marketsof India, China and Russia.

One million visitors boost turnover

The figures

Aturnover of 73 milllioneuro and well over a mil-

lion visitors. The figures forVeronafiere indicate constantgrowth and interesting marginsof development. In 2007 ear-nings rose 4%, to 73 millioneuro, an increse of 31.5% com-pared to 2004, which is a com-parable year for the type of

events held. The gross operatingmargin was 12.7 million euroagainst 9.8 million for 2006(+28.9%) and 11.3 million in2004 (+12.4%), while pre-taxprofits were 6.3 million euro,well over the expected 1.6 mil-lion. In total Veronafiere sold617,472 net square metres(+2%) to 14 thousand exhibi-

tors, of which 42% were foreignfor international fairs, and1,142,321 visitors (in line with2006), of which over 20% wereforeign, again for internationalfairs (with a peak of 42% offoreigners for Marmomacc anda record 37 thousand internatio-nal visitors for Vinitaly)."Behind these figures - claimed

Luigi Castelletti president ofVerona fiere - there are alliedindustries of 900 million euro,which makes the Fiera di Vero-na the leading organizer ofevents in Italy". For 2008, ear-nings are estimated at 73.3 mil-lion euro, up about 10.5% on2005, a year comparable for thetype of events held.

Riva del Garda Fierecon-gressi Spa has been the

Trento region's trade fair andconference centre for over tenyears. It's objective is to hostand develop new national andinternational events to sustainthe economy of the area andthe seasonal adjustment of thetourism offer. The fair's prin-cipal event is Expo RivaSchuh, the international exhi-bition dedicated to volumefootwear which will open nextyear's activities from January17-20, with the autumn-win-

ter collec-tions. The 33t h o u s a n dsquare metresof exhibitionspace at Riva del Garda willwelcome more than 1,100exhibitors, 60% of whom fromabroad, to cater to the over 11thousand retail buyers expec-ted.This year once more, at theevent held in June Expo RivaSchuh was a resounding suc-cess, with 1,106 exhibitors,including 730 from abroad

from 33 countries. "We areaware that the atypical natu-re of Expo Riva Schuh - stres-sed the director of Riva delGarda Fierecongressi, Gio-vanni Laezza - is preciselyour strength, and we will con-tinue to invest in the charac-teristics which, together withour position in the calendarof fairs in the sector, enables

us to show collections consi-derably in advance of otherevents, making us particu-larly attractive for MidEuro-pean operators, Expo RivaSchuh's principal interlocu-tors". The president of thetrade fair centre, Roberto Pel-legrini, also expressed greatsatisfaction with the successof the event.

Bolzano goes China

Energy efficiency, sustai-nable building, construc-

tion and maintenance of roadinfrastructure, alpine andwinter technology, agricultu-re and food. These are only some of thestrong points of the thrivingFiera di Bolzano. The groupboasts 25 thousand squaremetres of covered exhibitionspace and 15 thousand unco-vered, as well as an adjacentpolyfunctional structure, the

Palaonda (5 thousand squaremetres of covered exhibitionspace, with a capacity of upto eight thousand people).These are the two feathers inthe cap of the Fiera di Bolza-no, one foreign and the otherItalian. The foreigner hailsfrom the East: Alpitec China,the international fair specia-lising in alpine and wintertechnology, to be held fromFebruary 19-21 in Beijing,together with Ispo China,

Munich's international fair,while at Harbin - one thou-sand kilometres from the Chi-nese capital, the 24th winterUniversiade will take place.In an exhibition space of 20thousand square metres, com-panies which operate interna-tionally will present productsfrom various sectors: clo-thing, equipment and acces-sories for retailers and hirersof skis, ski-lifts, snowmakingmachines, equipment for

piste-maintenance and con-trol of access. Italy's featherin the cap is the fair and con-ference centre "KlimahouseRoma", which Bolzano hasexported to the capital toshow the public of the centralsouth the systems, necessitiesand advantages of energysaving in building, with 100companies and as many exhi-bition stands, in an exhibitionspace of about 2,500 squaremetres.

It's time once again for theeagerly awaited appointment

with the world of seating. The32nd International Chair Exhibi-tion will be held from September13 -16, in the pavilions of UdineFiere. The trade fair district inUdine will become a referencepoint for international professio-nals in the sector. The show willbe organized thanks to the syner-gies between Udine, Gorizia Fiereand Promosedia. The pavilionswill showcase a vast range of exci-ting seating solutions. Classic andmodern styles, traditional or inno-vative, the fair will feature upco-ming developments and exploreall sectors, from the residential tocontract, office to conference,senior citizens' and children's. Theexhibition is increasingly interna-tional, with participants from allover the world, including emer-ging economies. At the last exhi-bition operators from 65 countriesattended, from Europe andbeyond, including Japan, Russia,Australia and the US. With visitorsalso from countries with develo-ping economies such as India andthe United Arab Emirates.

Genova: the nautical industry showcases its jewels

The Genova Boat Show ,the most important event

of the year for the nauticalworld, will be organized bythe Fiera di Genova SpA andUcina, the Italian Associationof Boat Industries and Ship-yards, from October 4-12.The new exhibition spaces inpavilion B confirm the stra-tegy of continuing improve-ment of the event, which, forits 48th edition, consolidatesits leadership with a vastrange of products and a spec-tacular visual display, parti-cularly the enlarged floatingsection of over 100 thousandsquare metres. Over 1,500companies participate , with

2,300 boats on show and hun-dreds of new products. It hasa very international nature(37% of exhibitors are fromabroad) and last year hosted327,000 visitors. This year

will feature the sectors ofmotor boats, sailing boats andyachts, engines, water sportsclothing, fishing and divingequipment, nautical tourismand services.

From October 4-12 over 2,300 boats on show in the Ligurian capital

Official manufacturers of cars andmotorcycles, classic cars, spare parts,

modelling, vintage clothing, museums, acces-sories and watches. In four words: "Vintagecars and motorcycles". This year too, fromOctober 24-26, sees the return of the cars andmotorcycles that have been the stuff of dreamsin Italy and throughout the world. An exhibitionthat last year was the biggest in Europe for thenumber of cars and motorcycles on show, with1,600 models in a space of 90 thousand squa-re metres and 60 thousand visitors. A must forboth enthusiasts and the general public alike.According to Andrea Olivi, general managerof PadovaFiere, it is "an event that as well asbeing a reference point for collectors, is also agreat marketing opportunity for the entireEuropean car market". And this year too "Vin-tage cars and motorcycles" promises to be assuccessful as past editions.

Piacenza: overseas visitors for Geofluid

Geofluid, the international exhibition oftechnologies for the prospecting,

extraction and conveyance of undergroundfluids, will be held at the trade fair centre inPiacenza from October 1 - 4, 2008. As in pasteditions the following sectors will be inclu-ded: Geotech, GeoTunnel and GeoControl.

In 2006 there were 10,000 participants at theevent, 1,734 of whom came from 67 coun-tries. As well as the exhibition section, nume-rous meetings and seminars will be organi-zed by companies and Italian universities tokeep visitors up to date with the latest deve-lopments in the sector.
