The Directorate General of foreign Trade(DGFT) is the agency of the Ministry ofCommerce and Industry of the Governmentof India, responsible for execution of theimport and export Policies of India. It was
earlier known as Chief Controller of Imports &Exports (CCI&E) till 1991. DGFT plays a veryimportant role in the development of tradingrelations with various other nations and thushelp in improving not only the economicgrowth but also provides a certain impetusneeded in the trade industry. For promotingexports and imports DGFT establish itsregional offices across the country.

spread over a span of one hundred and fortyyears and carried out under the stewardshipof capable and pragmatic visionaries. TheOrganization traces its origin to a statisticalbranch established in the FinanceDepartment of the Government of India wayback in 1862. Sir William W. Hunter was thefirst DG of the DGCI & S or the DirectorGeneral of Statistics as he was designated,back in 1871.

COUNCILS The basic objective of Export Promotion Councils
is to promote and develop the exports of thecountry. Each Council is responsible for thepromotion of a particular group of products,projects and services. he main role of the EPCs
is to project India's image abroad as a reliablesupplier of high quality goods and services. Inparticular, the EPCs shall encourage and monitorthe observance of international standards andspecifications by exporters. The EPCs shall keep
abreast of the trends and opportunities ininternational markets for goods and services andassist their members in taking advantage of suchopportunities in order to expand and diversifyexports.
