LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT/PRINCIPAL

I hope that your Christmas season was filled with

blessings and family warmth. We are very excited

to see all our students back on campus along with

our faculty and staff. We feel that sense of Family

that we are truly blessed with at JCA. We’ve had a

very eventful first semester with a football state

championship, a third-place state finish for our girls

volleyball team, our boys cross-country team going

to state for the first time in school history, and Mia

Bertino making it to state for tennis. Along with a

very entertaining Fall Play, enriching music concerts,

our 22 Illinois State Scholars, and strong numbers for

the Class of 2023 placement exam, we have much to

be proud of!

As we begin the second semester, we are very excited to continue with our Strategic Plan/

Capital Initiative – Onward Together involving the Chapel and Innovation Research Center.

This initiative is half over, with the completion of the Mary, Our Sister Chapel, but we must

push forward and raise the funds that will complete our state of the art, university-like, library for

our students. We are over the $150,000 mark for raised funds and are hoping to secure the funds

necessary to start the project by the end of the school year. We still have a ways to go though,

with a $1.3-million price tag for the new IRC. We know that you sacrifice much to support JCA and

our students, but we ask that you consider giving to this project to enable our students with an

even better education.

As we look forward, we continue with our 150-year celebration at events like our Hall of

Champions for Business and Industry, our Academic Honors Society ceremonies, and our major

fundraiser, Jubilate, where we are proud to honor Gloria and Ed Dollinger with the President’s

Award for their dedication and years of service to Joliet Catholic Academy.

We hope that you join us as we look forward to exciting programs and events at JCA in this

second semester. We are all in this together, and with that sense of Family, we will make our

school community that much stronger.

Blessings for the New Year!

Dr. Jeffrey Budz

JCA graduate Moira Dunn ’95, who currently serves as the vice president of the JCA Alumni Board, was recently tapped as the new chief of staff for the Will County Board by newly elected board Speaker Denise Winfrey, D-Joliet. Dunn, is the daughter of the Hon. Thomas Dunn ’60, a retired state senator and associate judge. The chief of staff oversees legislation, regulatory issues and the budget.

Dunn has nearly a decade of experience in Will County government, according to a news release.

“I am pleased to have a person like Moira as our new chief of staff,” Winfrey said in the release. “She is extremely well qualified with deep experience in county government and a demonstrated

commitment to community service that will serve the County Board and the residents of Will County well in the years ahead.”

Dunn was an assistant state’s attorney in the felony division, where she handled an average of 80 cases at a time and prosecuted more than 25 jury trials, the release said. She has also worked with Huron Consulting Group and area law firms.

In addition to serving on the JCA Alumni Board, Dunn also serves on the Spanish Community Center Board, and is a member of the Will County Bar Association and Illinois State Prosecutor’s Bar Association.

Dunn is a lifelong Will County resident and lives in Shorewood.

Lausch, Rompa brothers recognized at West Suburban Chiefs of Police Association Banquet

Three Joliet Catholic Academy alumni were a part of the West Suburban Chiefs of Police Association banquet hosted on Sept. 5, 2018 in La Grange, Illinois.

The association was established in 1960 and is a group which shares information on crime fighting strategies and also lobbies state legislators to enhance crime prevention laws in Illinois.

A new board was sworn-in by United States Attorney John Lausch

‘88. Ed Rompa ’87 was elected as the new president of the association. Lausch served as the keynote speaker, while Rompa’s brother Mike ’91, current Bolingbrook deputy chief of police, also spoke. During the presentations, all three mentioned the impact Joliet Catholic High School had on their leadership skills and how the most successful football program in Illinois history has had such a positive influence on their careers.

Cornelius wins Will County circuit court judge race

Courtesy of John Ferak, Joliet Patchpublished Nov. 7, 2018Democratic Joliet attorney Vincent F. Cornelius ’82 told Joliet Patch that he

was thankful to the voters of Will County for electing him to the bench as a new circuit court judge. Cornelius defeated Associate Judge Victoria McKay Kennison, a Republican, in the November 2018 general election by around 10,000 votes, according to unofficial vote totals.

“You never know how these things go with elections, but we’ve been working really, really hard, a lot of people have been working really hard for us all over the county,” Cornelius told Joliet Patch during the victory night celebration. “I hope to bring trial experience ... and to be a problem-solver that people need when they walk up those courthouse steps. I’m looking forward to getting my sleeves rolled up in the city of Joliet and getting to work.”

Cornelius, a lawyer in private practice in Joliet, is a 2017 recipient of the Joliet Catholic Academy Alumni Association’s Career Achievement Award. He was also the keynote speaker at JCA’s all-school assembly honoring Black History Month in February 2018. He attended elementary school and junior high school in Joliet Public School District 86, where his mother taught and served for 34 years.

“I have tried hundreds of cases in my 28-year legal career, and I have had the honor of serving the legal profession and the community at large in many significant areas. The combination of courtroom experience and leadership ser-vice have prepared me well to serve Will County as its next circuit court judge,” Cornelius stated

His campaign literature noted that Cornelius is recognized in America’s Best Lawyers (2018), Leading Lawyers (2018) and Super Lawyers (2015-present), and he has a superb 10.0 AVVO rating. Cornelius previously served as the first person from Will County and first African-American to be named president of the Illinois Bar Association.

JCA would also like to congratulate alums Lauren Staley-Ferry ‘96 and John Connor ‘88. Staley-Ferry won the office of Will County clerk. Connor (‘88), who will serve out the term until early 2019, was appointed in 2017 to the Illinois House of Representatives.

NEWS FROM AROUND CAMPUS

Dr. Jeffrey Budz, president/principal of Joliet Catholic Academy, has announced that Kylie Weis and Jack Smith have been named Commended Students in the 2019 National Merit Scholarship Program. A letter of commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, will be presented by the principal to these scholastically talented seniors.

About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2019 competition for National Merit Scholarship awards, Commended Students placed among the top 50,000 scorers of more than 1.6 million students who entered the 2019 competition by taking the 2017 Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT).

“The young men and women being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” a spokesperson for NMSC said. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their

academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”

Joliet Catholic Academy Athletic Department announcesexclusive partnership with Adidas and Lansing Sports

The Joliet Catholic Academy Athletic Department has agreed to enter a long-term agreement with Adidas and Lansing Sports as the sole provider of Angel and Hilltopper athletics apparel. The announcement was made by Ryan Quigley, JCA’s director of admissions and communications.

“We are eager to enter into a partnership with Adidas and Lansing Sports because of their product innovation, global brand significance, and most importantly the depth of customer service that both provide their customers. We strive to give Angel and Hilltopper student-athletes an elevated experience here at JCA. Partnering with Adidas reinforces the fact that we have one of the strongest brands in high school

sports. We are excited about the marketing and branding opportunities both in our community and on a national stage for our athletic programs,” Quigley said.

Adidas will provide JCA Athletics with numerous incentives over the term of the agreement, as well as significant discounts on equipment, apparel, and footwear for Hilltopper and Angel student-athletes. NEWS FROM AROUND CAMPUSJCA holds sixth annual All-School Retreat and Service Day

Joliet Catholic Academy engaged in its sixth annual All-School Retreat and Service Day on Wednesday, Oct. 3. This year, JCA expanded the event to include the freshman class as well as the senior class, with both engaging in community-service projects throughout the greater Joliet area. The seniors and freshmen worked in mixed groups, a great way to get the two classes to mingle and get to know one another in a big brother/sister kind of way.

The junior and sophomore classes were engaged in a day of reflection led by NET Ministries Retreat Team and the Diocese of Joliet Youth Ministry team. They spent the day hearing talks and doing activities to help the students deepen their faith.

The senior and freshman classes were all off campus serving the poor and needy in the local community. The service projects included work at food banks, shelters, care of the elderly, animal care and environment care. Feed My Starving Children provides food for the poor in foreign countries. Hands of Hope and Northern Illinois Food Bank provide food and aid for the local poor. A group of students worked at the Habitat for Humanity Restore as well as on a building project for Habitat. A new site for JCA this year was Holsten Human Development Group which is managing the Riverwalk Apartments, where students worked in a food pantry and at a community garden site. A group of Spanish-speaking students served at the Morningstar Mission for their registration drive for Thanksgiving and Christmas needs. Several students learned about care for the elderly by working at Our Lady of Angles and the Willows senior housing and nursing care homes. A large group learned about environmental care by serving

with the Will County Forest Preserve at Theodore Marsh. Still another JCA group of seniors and freshmen learned about both the needs of people with certain disabilities as well as animal care by helping at Ready Set Ride Therapeutic Riding Stables. Lastly, students cared for God’s creation by spending the day at Joliet Animal Control and Hopeful Tails shelters. The enjoyed bathing, walking and caring for the dogs and cats.

The annual Service and Retreat Day truly shows the best of JCA as a community that prays together and works together for the good of others.

It was a beautiful night at the Ceremonial Mass and Blessing of the Altar for the Mary, Our Sister Chapel on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018 at Joliet Catholic Academy.

This new physical and spiritual center of the building located at 1200 N. Larkin Ave. was made possible by a generous donation from Dorothy and the late Laverne “Bitz” Brown. The space includes seating for up to 400 in the large portion of the chapel, and an additional 50 seats in the Adoration Chapel. The entire JCA community is eternally grateful for their contribution to help continue to move forward the school’s mission of “inspiring growth in knowledge and faith.”

JCA president/principal Dr. Jeffrey Budz said, “Dottie and Bitz Brown have inspired us through their generosity and vision for the Mary, Our Sister Chapel. They have given our students yet another avenue for spiritual growth at JCA.”

“The new Mary, Our Sister Chapel feels like

you are in a whole different building or private section of our school. We can go and be with God throughout the school day for private prayer or reflection. It’s amazing how quickly the construction took place, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the generous donation from the Mr. and Mrs. Brown,” junior Jake Bumstead said.

JCA would also like to thank the entire community that showed up for the ceremony: students, faculty and staff, administration, parents, friends, and especially the Carmelites and Joliet Franciscan Sisters, who have cosponsored and led the school for the past 28 years combined, and together have educated high school students in Joliet for 207 school years.

JCA is celebrating 150 years of Catholic Education in Joliet during this 2018-2019 school year, a legacy that includes St. Francis Academy, De La Salle High School, Joliet Catholic High School, Joliet Catholic Academy, and the over 23,000 combined alumni who have graduated from these storied institutions that make up its past.

Budz added, “We are proud to be living the charisms, traditions, and legacy of the Carmelites and Franciscans. As we celebrate 150 years, we thank our founders and hope that our current, future, and past students live these charisms and keep our traditions in their hearts.”

JCA would also like to thank the Diocese of Joliet and Vicar General Fr. Richard Smith for presiding over the beautiful ceremonial Mass and blessing.

“JCA’s spirituality on campus has been enhanced thanks to the Brown family. We all come together as one at all school masses, daily masses, and praying before each class. We are all one here at JCA even if you aren’t Catholic,” senior Megan O’Brien said.

Excitement abounds for what the future holds at Joliet Catholic Academy, with the Mary, Our Sister Chapel providing a holy gathering place for current and future leaders at Joliet’s leading Catholic college preparatory institution.

The Joliet Catholic Academy football team scored 14 points in the fourth quarter and then turned away a last-ditch drive by Montini that ended at the Hilltoppers’ 7-yard line with an interception by senior Andrew Gorski.

The result? JCA earned a thrilling 35-27 victory in the Class 5A state championship game.

The Hilltoppers added to their IHSA record with their 14th state title.

“Wow, what a finish,” Joliet Catholic coach Jake Jaworski said. “I think when you think of Joliet Catholic and Montini in a state cham-pionship, that’s what you think of – a game coming right down to the wire.”

The Hilltoppers were without ESCC Offensive Player of the Year Keenan Hailey for much of the game, who injured his ankle on the first drive of the game. Senior fullback Nick Iannantone picked up the slack with a bruising 318 yards and three touchdowns on 40 carries behind a physical offensive line led by seniors Dave Monnot, Ty O’Janovac, Ryan Laule, Colin Cox and junior Conor Kovas.

The JCA defense, led by seniors Fernando Chavez, Max Briscoe Kurt Weis, Mundo Meyer, Scott Fosen and Gorski, held the Broncos scoreless in the fourth quarter to help seal the win.

The Hilltoppers story-book season was capped off by a six-game win streak leading to the state title and a 10-4 overall fin-ish. Joliet Catholic became just the third program in IHSA history to enter Week 9 of the regular season needing a win to enter the playoffs and still capture a state championship. They did it in dramatic fashion with a come-from-behind 33-17 upset on the road at Niles Notre Dame. The

JCA’s daunting regular -sea-son schedule included three conference op-ponents who qualified for the state semi-finals (Marist in 8A, 7A state c h a m p i o n Nazareth, and Niles Notre Dame in 6A) and nonconference opponent Immaculate Conception in Elmhurst (4A state champion).

Jaworski is the fifth coach in program history to win a state championship. Gordie Gillespie won five, Jim Boyter and Bob Stone each had one, and Dan Sharp had six.

“It’s a great honor,” Jaworski said. “But this is all about the kids and this senior class. They made it happen.”

McKeon) The old saying that time flies could not be more true and good friends and family are one of life keys to happiness. Fifty years have passed and this past September the grown men of the JC Class of ‘68 reunited to celebrate the friendships formed in our youth. Starting at the KC where the beer was cold and cheap followed by the homecoming football game and then back to KC for more beverages, catching up was food for the soul. Saturday included a golf outing and for those interested a tour of the Collins Street prison in the morning and then a gathering at downtown Joliet train station held at My Grain Brewery which included a special appearance of some of the SFA ladies from the Class of ‘68. It has been suggested that we gather the class for another reunion much sooner given for some this was first time in 50 years we were reunit-ed so.... we are looking to fall of 2020 to have the next reunion that will be announced well in advance. (commentary provided by Warren Bank)

SFA 1968

The SFA Class of ’68 celebrated 50 years at Harrah’s Joliet for a fun lunch. The ladies had enjoyed reminiscing and catching up.

JCHS/SFA 1973The SFA/JCHS Class of ’73 celebrated 45 years post-high school at the Joliet

Park Districts cart barn. A record crowd came out to share stories of the past and even created new ones to share for the future.

JCHS/SFA 1978

Celebrating 40 years of friendship began at the JCA Homecoming game fol-lowed by a casual, fun get together at Thirty Buck. Saturday was an amazing evening held at the American Italian Cultural Society in Crest Hill hosted by our very own Toni Muren. A huge thank you to everyone who donated to the Alumni Scholarship Fund! We raised $1,775! Please visit our paver brick in the Heritage Quad. (commentary provided by Deanne Nonnie Stanton)

JCHS/SFA 1983

Lots of laughs for the Class of ’83 at their 35th reunion. Classmates gathered at the Croation Club on Oct. 6 after attending mass held at the JCA chapel.

JCHS/SFA 1988

A fun turnout for the Class of ’88 celebrating 30 years! Guests were able to enjoy the beautiful Renaissance Center as well as stories from their glory days of high school.

JCA 1998

The JCA Class of ’98 enjoyed celebrating their 20th at Heroes West over homecoming weekend.

JCA 2008Hard to believe just 10 years ago, the Class of ’08 graduated from JCA.

Members of the class celebrated at Heroes West over homecoming weekend and shared many laughs and funny stories.

On Friday, Sept. 7, 2018 a full crowd of golfers gathered at the Joliet Country Club for what ended up being an abbreviated (for some) Alumni Golf Outing. Due to the weather, golfers were called off the course after nine holes. Some chose to stay and play, enjoying the camaraderie and

friendship of one another. We are happy and excited to announce to commemorate our 150 years, next year’s JCA Alumni Golf Outing will take place on Friday, Sept. 6, 2019 at Cog Hill in Lemont. So mark your calendars and pray for good weather. See you then!

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF DEVELOPMENT

Online Giving

Dear alumni, families and friends,

I would like to first take the time to thank all of the donors who have contributed to Joliet Catholic Academy. Gifts of your time, talent and treasure have allowed us to improve our campus and award scholarships to students in need. Thank you for your selfless giving so that others can receive an education from JCA.

JCA’s development staff would like to show our donors three ways you can currently save money by giving to JCA. 1) Invest in Kids Act. AKA Tax Credit Scholarship

By creating an account on mytaxillinois.gov and gifting to the Invest in Kids Act through the statewide Schol-arship Granting Organization Empower Illlinois (www.empowerillinois.org), individuals and businesses can gift up to $1,000,000 to receive a 75 percent Illinois state income tax credit. This process does take some time, but if you missed out last year, please start the process early in 2019. Please consult with your tax advisor or contact the JCA Development Office and we can walk you through the donor process, so you can take advantage of the tax credit. This is extremely helpful to those with a high Illinois state income tax bill. A tax credit scholarship donation to Empower Illinois can either elimi-nate or drastically reduce your Illinois state income tax.

2) IRA RMD- AKA Individual Retirement Account Required Mandatory Distribution As you might already know, at the age of 70 ½, you are required by the IRS to make a required mandatory distribution. However, if the individual has to take the required mandatory distribution but doesn’t need the funds for living expenses, why should they have to take the tax hit? Well, if they gift the funds directly from their investment advisor to Joliet Catholic Academy, this would fulfill the RMD. Since they gifted the funds to a 501C3, they are not responsible for any tax liability for the RMD.

3) Estate Planning Estate planning reduces the an estate’s value so your family will have to pay less in estate tax due to charitable contributions. Funds can be gifted to a Donor Advised Fund. This way, all of the funds can be used for an immediate tax deduction. The amount gifted to the Donor Advised Fund is not taken into account for the estate.

Sincerely in Christ,

Mr. John Horn ‘91JCA Director of [email protected], ext. 276

Many thanks to the following members of the SFA-DLS-JCHS-JCA Alumni Association for contributing to JCA during the 2017-2018 fiscal year. Through their partnership, volunteerism, and financial generosity, the benefits of a JCA education are extended to new generations of Angels and Hilltoppers.

NOTE: Participation rates indicate the number of donors in relation to the number of “active” class members (i.e. deliverable addresses).
