YEAR 12 BUSINESS STUDIES STUDENTS

In Term 3 Mrs O’Brien, Mr Squires and Mr Walsh accompanied 37 Year 12 Business Studies students for a 3

day excursion to Sydney. Students spent time visiting Pure Gelato, Taronga Zoo and Luna Park, gaining

valuable first-hand knowledge about the operational and marketing strategies of these businesses. In particular,

the presenters at Pure Gelato and Luna Park provided students with detailed information which can be used in

the up-coming HSC examinations. Thank you to Mr Walsh and Mr Squires for driving the buses and using their

geography skills to navigate safely around Sydney.

Mrs O’Brien

Ag-Quip Excursion

On Tuesday 19th August the Support Unit travelled to Gunnedah to explore Ag-Quip. Mr Baldwin drove the

school bus and he was awesome. It was a huge show and lots of people attended.

We saw a fishing show that was on a semi-trailer and had

delicious steak sandwiches for lunch.

We saw some motorbikes at the Honda exhibit and we were

given footballs, soccer balls and hats from the BKT stand. The

police had a chat with us at their stand and gave us some NO

TRESPASSING signs and some information.

At the UNE exhibit some of us had fake plaster put on our

arms and we spoke to some students that are studying

nursing. After that we looked at the Army stand and the people

there gave us USBs.

We saw a mobile drag car which was really cool and went to a football stand that had jerseys and footballs.

Lastly we bought some sour lollies and then headed off back

to school.

Written by Daymon.

We went to Ag-Quip on the 19th August. It was so good to see

all the stuff they had there. On the way to Gunnedah we saw

coal trains, buses and track works.

At the exhibition we saw people, model trains, tractors, trucks and even Volkswagen Amaroks. By Jaycob.

/15 Boys Basketball Knockout

Round One: The team travelled out to Manilla where they played well from the beginning with Manilla

only getting on the board just before quarter time. All the Oxley students played well and ran out

convincing winners 54-10 without one of our best players. Brodie Sweeney scored 22 points and Aaron Briscoe-

Hough pulled down more rebounds than we could count.

Round Two: The boys played Tamworth High School at the Sports Dome and played very well. Corin Webster

scored 18 points and Brodie Sweeney scored 12 points. Aaron Briscoe-Hough rebounded and defended

brilliantly again with all the other players making important contributions throughout the game. Oxley ran out

comfortable winners 51-23.

Semi-Final: The team made the long trip to Armidale to take on Armidale High School. The opposition had a

player who was a State representative and was 195cm tall. The rest of the team were also taller than almost all

of our team. The boys all played their best game and made Armidale fight all the way through to the final quarter

until the other teams star sank three or four three-pointers to take the game away from the boys. Armidale

eventually won 62-40. Corin Webster again lead from the front with 14 points and made the oppositions star work

Page 5: Traditional homeland of the Gomeroi / Kamilaroi Nation

for every single point. Brodie Sweeney played the entire game with an incredibly sore back that would have

caused most people to pull out. Despite this he scored 12 points and defended well all game.

Rohan Birrell sunk 3 three-pointers (9 points) making the opposition sit up and take notice. Aaron

Briscoe-Hough again defended and rebounded brilliantly against a much larger team. Cameron

Rust hit some lovely jump-shots and all the other players played important roles.

All the boys played extremely well making Armidale fight a lot harder than they thought they would.

They are all to be commended for their positive attitude and commitment to training. They were a

pleasure to coach.

Combined High Schools Athletics in Sydney

Oxley High School athletes achieved outstanding results at the Combined High Schools Athletics in Sydney last week. Jessica Aldridge won gold in the 15yrs girls javelin (35.95m) to follow-up her record breaking throw of 14.16m the day before in the shot put. John Moore won gold in the 16yrs 110m hurdles. Lia Mills won silver in the 16yrs girls 200m and bronze in the 16 yrs girls 400m. The 13yrs girls 4 x 100m relay achieved silver with a time of 53.92. Medal Tally - 3 gold, 2 silver, 1 bronze Oxley High finished 26th in the point score out of 293 NSW secondary schools and an incredible 13th in the girls’ point score! Oxley High School was the best performing school in the North West, and narrowly edged out Macksville High, to be the best performing country school with 61 points. Considering that there is minimal support for athletics in our area, I'm sure you will agree that this is an outstanding achievement! By Kate Mills.

Open Boys KO Hockey

Oxley High School has had tremendous success with their hockey sides over the years and this year is proving to be no exception.

The Open Boys Hockey Knockout Team travelled to Grafton to take on Grafton High School on the 19th of August. Down to the Final 16 in the state, each team desperately needed the win to make it into the top 8 in the state and then proceed to the quarter finals.

Unfortunately, on this occasion Oxley was defeated by the talented Grafton squad 8-4. However, according to Mr Yeo, “Our boy’s didn’t drop their heads” instead continuing to play their best for the whole game, displaying fantastic sportsmanship on the field. All of the team members played to the extent of their ability and did themselves and Oxley proud for making it as far as they did.

The squad consisted of William Haywood, Matthew Everett, Andrew Finch, Jonathan Stacey, Lachlan Harris, Darcy Carr, Brendan Kelly, John Moore, Blake Abra, Toby Fox, Blake Turner, Mitchell Lewin and Harry Lewin. Blake Turner of year twelve scored the final goal of the match in his last game for Oxley.

Congratulations to the boys leaving side, who won the last 2 state titles. Special thanks to Mr Howarth for driving the bus and Mr Yeo for coaching this year’s Open Boys Hockey team. By Amelia Dadd.

Touch Football Gala Day

The Year 7/8 Touch Football Gala Day, held on Tuesday 2nd September, was yet another great achievement for

Oxley High.

Oxley had a boy’s side and a girl’s side competing on the day. Both teams made it into the

final rounds. The girl’s squad had a successful day winning their first game against Barraba

Central School 9-nil, with Ashlea Brindley scoring an impressive 4 tries. After Bundarra

Central School forfeited, the girls proceeded to play St Joseph’s from Aberdeen and won 3-

1. They then moved on to the final rounds where they defeated Peel High 7-1 and

unfortunately went down in the semi-final to McCarthy Catholic College.

The boys team were off to a cracking start as well with a win against McCarthy, defeating them 3-2 but then

suffered a loss to St Joseph’s 2-6. They drew against Barraba Central School with a final score of 2-2. The 7/8

boys team preceeded to the quarter final where they were defeated by Moree 5-1.

Overall Oxley had a terrific day and the students all represented their school well and with pride. All players

performed to the best of their ability and put in tremendous effort. Thanks to Miss Hodgson and Mr Yeo for

supervising/ coaching. By Amelia Dadd.

The Oxley High Chess Team

The Oxley Chess Team recently travelled to Armidale to compete in Round 5 of the NSW Country Secondary

Schools Knockout Chess Teams Competition. Although TAS were victors on the day,

winning three of the four games, our Year 7 first-timers Zac Burn and Joe Ross-Ward

enjoyed the opportunity to represent their school, along with other team members

Cameron Johnston, and Jonathon Stacey who was our successful player.

Dance Festival - A Student Perspective

From the 14th to the 16th of August around 90 students from Oxley high participated in New England Regional Dance Festival. Many schools from across the region travelled to Tamworth to dance and watch their students perform and have fun on the stage of the Tamworth Regional Entertainment and Conference Centre (TRECC).

Oxley’s participation included nine dances in this year’s Dance Festival with one dance from each of the four dance elective class and five other dances performed by the students who chose to do dance for Thursday sport. All of the dancers have been practising since the start of Term 1 to get ready for their big performances and to make sure everything was well rehearsed. On top of these nine dances three of the Oxley High School HSC dance routines were part of the 2014 festival line up.

Jayme Lay was one of the student choreographers for dance and choreographed the jazz routine ‘Beautiful Nightmare’. According to Jayme the inspiration for her dance came about because she’s a big fan of both Beyoncé and upbeat jazz. Jayme said that, “… choreographing a dance is hard work and takes a lot of time and effort.”

One of the positive aspects of Dance Festival is that it is open to all students to participate. Neither Year 8 student Ashleigh Hodgson nor Tear 10 student Kaitlyn Robards do dance as an elective or out of school but instead choose to do it for sport. Ashleigh was in the dance ‘Pom Poms’ which was choreographed by students Shannon Vanderstelt and Tammy Robinson. Ashleigh reflected on one of the other important aspects and her favourite part of Dance Festival was, on the nights, talking with everyone and watching all the other dances. Kaitlyn’s favourite part of Dance Festival was actually performing the dance and was in the dance ‘Wasting My Young Years’ which was choreographed by Layla and Olivia Harris.

All of the students performed very well and should be proud of their effort and achievement. Mrs Massey did an extraordinary job of coordinating and organising this year’s Dance Festival and thanks go to Ms Hodgson for teaching all of the elective dance classes. By Libby Wise.

State Dance Festival

This year we have six girls that have been selected in

the Regional Dance Ensemble to participate in the

State Dance Festival in Sydney starting on Monday

the 15th of September. Abbey Condon, Tayah

Thornberry, Shelby Botfield-Mohr, Shannon

Vanderstelt and Tammy Robinson will travel to

Sydney and perform in a dance entitled ‘Evil Queens’.

A fantastic dance achievement for these students.

The Stage is Set!

Oxley High School has a long history of community events, from the traditional International Night, to the Antique Fair fundraiser, to the always-popular, themed school discos. Getting outside the classroom and doing something interesting has always been a big part of Oxley, and this year is no exception.

Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) represents a huge portion of extra-curricular involvement at Oxley, includin g the Oxley Live creative showcase and the annual school musical. Mr Sean McInnes, who is directing his second musical at Oxley, has revealed that the play for this year is an adaption of the popular Annie (originally a comic strip entitled Little Orphan Annie by Harold Gray, which was then adapted into a Broadway musical and film).

Annie follows the journey of “Little Orphan Annie” as she is thrown out into the world at the whim of Grace Farrell, secretary to billionaire Oliver Warbucks. Annie is taken back to Warbucks’ mansion because he wanted an orphan to live there for a while “to help his image”. Annie manages to convince Warbucks to help her search for her parents, but ends up being kidnapped after Warbucks puts out a reward for Annie’s real parents if they show up.

Mr McInnes has a broad background in drama, from centre stage to backstage technical support, and said about this year’s play, “I hope to have no more than 55 people involved in total, including the band, and no more than 30 on stage. Last year, we had 77 people onstage plus the entire backstage crew which was huge.”

The cast list has been revealed, and the main character Annie is being played by Year Ten student Olivia Harris. The main antagonist, Oliver Warbucks, will be portrayed by Geordie Brown, who is in Year 9.

When asked where one starts when taking on a project this big, Mr McInnes immediately replied, “when directing a musical, you always start with the songs. The songs are the most important part, not the script.”

Mr McInnes said that, for him, the highlights of directing the school play were “the first dress rehearsal, that’s always fun”, the first time I see the play from start to finish, with no gaps and the first time an actor says their lines without a piece of paper in front of them and gets it right.

The opening night for Annie is set for 27th November with two shows on the 28th and 29th. Watch this space for updates! By Kelly Russell.

Congratulations Oxley High School 7/8 Debating Team

The Girls U/15’s Basketball Gala Day

The girls’ basketball gala day was held on Monday the 8th of September at the Sports Dome. Teams from all over the region attended, including Armidale, Quirindi, Manilla, Macintyre, Coonamble, Tenterfield and a team from Oxley consisting of Brooklyn Watters, Amelia Dadd, Maddy Dadd, Jess Watt, Sami Bailey, Kate Stacey, Olivia Tarlington, Holly Schalk, Katelyn Moss and Lara Taggart.

The first game started at 10:30am so the girls had a short time to warm up and figure out a game strategy. Oxley was first playing Armidale High School and both teams looked nervous as they walked to the court. The ball was thrown in the air and off they went. A slow start for Oxley but after being tied 13 all at half time they switched on and started passing the ball around well. Great defence and some sharp shooting from Amelia Dadd, Jess Watt, Brooklyn Watters, Katelyn Moss and Kate Stacey turned Oxley around and they won 33-26.

With a small break the Oxley girls next game was against Coonamble at 12pm. Going into this game the girls kept their strong form from the previous game and at half time they led 21-4. After halftime Oxley’s ball game and defence got much stronger and Coonamble barely got near the hoop, meaning Oxley won 36-12 with everyone in the team scoring.

Oxley’s third game was the final against Quirindi, who had also been displaying their strength all day. Everyone knew it was going to be a tough game and it ended up being just that. The score was close the whole time and it was also very physical. At half time the score was 15-14 Oxley’s way and after half time both Oxley and Quirindi came back fighting even harder. The great ball possession and some fabulous defence and on target shooting by Amelia Dadd, Brooklyn Watters, jess Watt, Maddy Dadd and Kate Stacey led Oxley to win with the final score being 32-28.

A big thank you to our referees Natalie Vinall, Ryland Sainsbury, Corin Webster, Jordin Hansen, James Sinclair and Brodie Sweeney for helping out on the day. another big thankyou to all the Benchers, helpers and Miss Hodgson for organising the day...

-by Breanna Emery.

The Importance of Volunteering – A Student Perspective

One of Oxley’s four pillars is commitment to community and currently we aren’t finding enough volunteers in our school community willing to help. Oxley’s school Canteen is struggling to find people to help work in it and we always need people willing to set up and clean up after school events. These are all important and it would be disappointing if events stopped because of a lack of volunteers.

People from the wider school community, parents and grandparents, are welcome to come in and help. You don’t have to be a student.

Being involved in the school and in the community is something I strongly encourage. As a student from Oxley High, I would love to see more people get in there and help out. By Libby Wise.

NEXT MEETING: - Special Meeting Called

Monday, 15th September 2014 starting at 6:45pm in the Staff Common Room, upstairs in Macquarie Block, entry via the side closest to the Student Carpark.

ITEM UP FOR DISCUSSION

We would like to advise that we will be discussing funding for the PE Department to provide new equipment to upgrade the gym to the tune of approximately $33,000. 00.

So come along and find out what is happening in your child’s school and have a cuppa and a chat. We look forward to seeing you there.

FAREWELL YEAR 12, 2014

As our current Year 12 come to the end of their time at Oxley High this term, we would like to take this opportunity of wishing them all the best for their upcoming HSC exams.

CANTEEN NEWS

Just a reminder that the profits from the Canteen go towards your children’s education – we try to keep the prices at an extremely affordable level and only put up our prices when we absolutely have to.

Frozen Orchy Cups are now $1 each. Chocolate and Triple Swirl Billabongs have been discontinued by Peters and have been replaced by the new Fandangles in Fairy Floss Flavour and Caramel Popcorn Flavour.

Volunteers Needed!! - We still need more volunteer helpers in the Canteen, especially Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, so if you can spare a few hours once a month, once a fortnight or once a week please call the Canteen directly on 67661131, leave your name and contact details at the Front Office or email us at the new Canteen email address – [email protected]. It makes such a difference having two parents helping out at the same time instead of just one.

Online Ordering - Don’t forget to register for ordering at ouronlinec.com.au We still have a lot of children arriving later at the lunch break, especially on a Friday and we have run out of hot food. Please encourage your children to order either online or before school starts or even at recess to ensure they are getting something other than chips to eat at lunchtime.

SCHOOL FEES

By now everyone should have received their invoices in the mail. We urge each and every one of you to please pay your child’s subject fees and voluntary contributions. Public education isn’t free, it costs money to run the school and you make our fundraising efforts that much harder by not paying. If you pay your voluntary contributions into the Library Fund it is FULLY TAX DEDUCTABLE. If you are financially challenged a payment plan can be arranged by contacting the Front Office (details are strictly confidential). Let’s make 2014 the best yet for fee payments.

FACEBOOK PAGES:

Parents and staff can send a ‘friend request’ to the main Facebook page and keep up to date with what is happening at the school along with useful information, photos and discussions at Oxley high Pandc.

All of the school community including students can ‘like’ the community page at Oxley High School P&C Association to check out the latest photos, discussions, events etc. As with all “like” pages please make sure you tick the ‘get notifications’ and ‘show in news feed’ to make sure you actually get to see our posts.

PAYMENT OF SCHOOL FEES

School fees are an important component to ensuring that the learning environment is engaging, fun and rewarding for students. Please do not confuse subject contribution fees with voluntary school fees as they are different and serve a separate purpose. Please contact the Front Office for any queries or concerns.

There is an onus or expectation on parents and carers to pay your Child’s Subject Contribution Fees and to pay them on time. Oxley High School provides limited resources for subjects to get started at the beginning of the year. However, the bulk of resources for your child in classes are provided through parents and carers paying subject fees. This is the reason why we insist that you pay your fees and pay them on time.

If you or your family are having difficulties paying subject fees, the ladies in the Office can help with a payment plan. Your situation will be kept confidential.

For Senior students, we need to be clear that payment of fees for Years 11 and 12 will need to be undertaken prior to enrolment in the subject. This is to ensure that all practical and subject work can be completed without the added pressure of having to find money to finish courses. Again, we encourage parents and carers to consider negotiation of early payment to ensure that the start of the 2015 Preliminary and HSC year is as easy as possible.

PEANUT ALLERGIES AND AEROSOL CANS

Please be reminded not to bring peanut products to school as we have some students with severe peanut allergies. Also aerosol cans which can cause students and staff to have problems with Asthma.

YEAR 12 JUMPERS FOR 2015

Given that we believe that education is the focus of Oxley High School, we have determined that students seeking to purchase a Year 12 jumper must have all their Subject Fees paid in full prior to seeking purchase of a jumper. This will be monitored and where fees are outstanding, students will be advised that they are ineligible to purchase a Year 12 jumper.

If you have Subject Fees outstanding from as far back as Year 7, prompt payment of the amount is expected prior to Week 3, 2015.

If you are concerned that you may have outstanding Subject Fees, please contact the Oxley High School Office on 67661677 and we will organise your information for payment.

OXLEY HIGH SCHOOL - Uniform Policy and Expectations

As the new school year continues, we would like to take this opportunity to remind families of the high expectations Oxley High School maintains regarding uniform in our school. Oxley High School prides itself on upholding exceptional standards and a positive image both within our school and as members of the wider community. We therefore appreciate the continued support of our parents and carers in this area.

If you have an email address, attached to this newsletter is a copy of our school uniform policy and detailed description of the school uniform.

If you do not have an email address the Uniform requirements can be found on the Oxley High School Web Site.

Students who are unable to wear the full school uniform on any occasion must provide a note from home to the uniform officer (Deputy Principal) in D Block BEFORE SCHOOL to obtain a Uniform Exemption Pass. Disciplinary action will be enforced for those students out of uniform, without written explanation.

If families are experiencing any financial difficulties and are unable to meet uniform requirements, we have a Clothing Pool operating on Wednesdays 8.30am - 2.30pm and some student assistance is available through Macquarie Office. All students have been advised of these procedures during the first week of term, and once again we appreciate the ongoing cooperation of our school families. If you have any further queries or require support, please contact your child’s Year Adviser or Head Teacher Welfare as soon as possible.

REMINDER TO PARENTS

Could parents ensure that they are not dropping off or picking up their students in the Staff Car Park, unless prior special arrangements have been authorised with the school.

PARENT EMAIL ADDRESSES

On the back page of this publication is a slip for parents to update their email addresses. If you can supply an email address, it will assist the school in the reduction of postage for newsletters and accounts thus freeing up much needed funds for other projects.

RETURN OF TEXT BOOKS

Parents of returning students in years 8-12: Please help your student to locate and return any textbooks they have from previous years that they are no longer using. It is important that these items are returned so that current students have the use of, and benefit from these resources.

SCHOOL FEES

A reminder for Parents/Carers regarding accounts: Fees for all elective subjects, excursions, sport fees and fees for lost text books are all compulsory. These fees are to be paid before your child commences their elective subject or attend sporting events or excursions.

COMPULSORY SPORT FEE

In order to minimise the cost of sporting events run at Oxley High School, the $10.00 sporting fee is again in operation for 2014. Please make sure that you pay this fee promptly as the school needs to cover the costs incurred to run events.

Page 14: Traditional homeland of the Gomeroi / Kamilaroi Nation

We wish to take this opportunity to remind parents/carers that there is a substantial number of students who have elective fees outstanding from previous years, could those parents/carers please make arrangements with the school for payment of these fees, as your child can not be signed out of school until all fees are collected. If you are having problems meeting your fees for electives or sport please call at the front office to discuss any options the school may be able to consider.

BRITANNICA ONLINE

An initiative of the P&C is to fund our subscription to Britannica Online - a great online reference, which can be accessed by students, and their families, which gives them access to Ebsco which offers a broad range of full text and bibliographic data bases, designed for research from their homes via the Oxley High Moodle, which can be located via an Internet search. Subject areas include academic, biomedical, government, school etc. via Britannica Online. The student’s username and Oxley High School logon password will allow them to access the school Moodle. An authoritative information site for school assessments. A reminder also that paying the School Contribution fee into the Oxley Library Fund is 100% tax deductible! If you have any board games that you no longer want, in good condition, the Library would be grateful for any donations.

TRAVEL CONCESSION CARDS

Students 16 years and older travelling on NSW Trains and Coaches require the Senior Secondary Student Card to get the Student 50% discount fare.

If any student is considering travelling by Train or Coach, please come to the front office to pick up your card.

This card MUST be shown when purchasing your ticket.

MONEY Students who have forgotten/lost their money on Thursdays and need to pay money for Sport each week are able to borrow money from the Sports Organiser on Thursday morning or recess. Please do not come the second half of lunch to borrow money. This money is to be re-paid to the Sports Organiser the next day. LEAVE PASSES Sport is compulsory at school, and therefore should not be seen as an opportunity to carry out personal matters. Leave passes are for students who require leave from school to attend urgent appointments which cannot be made at other times. Students who wish to get a Leave Pass on Thursdays must have a note from their parent/caregiver clearly explaining where the student will be when they leave. The notes must be handed in before school to Macquarie office and MUST contain the following information:-

- Reason for leave - Phone Number for confirmation of appointment if required - Place and Time of appointment
