HİKMET BARUTCUGİL

Born in Malatya in 1952. He began his education in Textiles at State Academy of Fine Arts, Superior School of Industrial Applied Arts in 1973.

He was encouraged by Prof. Emin Barın to try calligraphy and paper marbling and took a special interest in paper marbling in 1973. He graduated from the Academy in 1977. He committed himself to relentless research on paper marbling in London where he stayed to enhance his expertise between 1978 and 1981.

He was later recognized as the first artist to discover a new paper marbling technique called Barut Marbling in 1988.

Barutçugil still teaches Paper Marbling at Mimar Sinan Academy of Arts, Marmara University Faculty of Fine Arts, Department of Traditional Turkish Arts, Ebristan (Istanbul Paper Marbling House) and National Palaces Education Center.

Furthermore, some of Barutçugil's work is on display at the London British Museum, Basel Paper Museum (Switzerland), Tonami Tulip Museum (Japan) and Lok Virsa Museum (Pakistan).

The artist has also lectured and spoken at 67 national and 138 international courses and seminars and opened 81 exhibitions in 35 countries.

Barutçugil has appeared on 62 TV shows and has written 47 articles and conducted several interviews during his carreer. Also he has had 11 books published on the art of Paper Marbling.
