Damp in Buildings
This is the unmissable Masterclass of 2013!
We are pleased to present Mike Parrett, one of
the world’s leading building pathologists and co-
author of the RICS’ bestselling book ‘Diagnosing
Damp’, recognised as the primary reference work
on dampness in buildings.
Building failure needs to be looked at holistically.
Dampness, in particular, is poorly understood and
widely misdiagnosed. The prevalent tendency is
to stop the investigation at the symptom and not
get to the underlying causes. And after decades
of sales-led solutions, Mike Parrett’s back to
basics approach gets to grips with where damp
comes from – and offers real, practical advice on
how to deal with it. While working at Lewisham
Course length: 1 Day Council, he solved the damp problems in
over 30,000 properties without once injecting
a chemical DPC!
Get the latest knowledge on damp in
buildings from the expert and
Check you have the right equipment to
investigate damp problems
Feel confident you are adopting the right
approach
Correctly identify damp problems
Gain real world knowledge through case
studies
Use checklists to verify your diagnosis
Mike will also be addressing the very real
issues that are likely to result from the
increase in the deluges of rainfall we have all
been experiencing in the last few years,
‘cutting edge’ stuff for real.
This seminar is aimed at building
professionals, site managers, building
contractors, students of the built environment.
Also for homeowners who are experiencing
damp problems
Traditional Leadwork-
Part 1 & 2
To be delivered by the Lead Sheet Association,
renowned promoters of best practice in the use of
lead on buildings, this seminar is suitable to
anyone involved in the construction industry that
needs to have a better understanding of the use
and specification of this ancient product in both a
new and historic context.
This practical seminar will address various
aspects of design, specification, and handling of
lead sheet that will involve both technical
presentations and practical hands on sessions.
Course length: 1 Day
Revised Building Standards
for Lime Binders You might think building standards are as ‘dull as
ditch water’ but working to relevant British and
European standards for conservation work should
be seen as best practice. More recently the
standards for building limes have been revised to
make the descriptions of binders more clear in
terms of their setting and hardened properties and
also to capture the range of formulated and
blended binders (principally for new build
applications). This half day seminar will address
the changes in the standards for building limes
and explain the differences between HLs, FLs and
NHLs. If you regularly specify lime mortars for
conservation, repair and restoration work, or
indeed new build, then this seminar is a must!
Course length: ½ Day
Understanding NBS Style
Specifications
Love them or hate them, but do they effectively
communicate what you want to happen on your
project?
Increasingly, non relevant clauses litter our
specifications, potentially causing confusion and
ultimately meaning you don’t get what you thought
you asked for on site.
Aimed at Building Professionals and Building
Contractors, this half day seminar will take you
through both poor and good examples of NBS
style specifications to demonstrate it’s all in the
communication!
Course length: ½ Day
Repair and Maintenance
of Masonry Arch Bridges
The UK boasts an enormous number of masonry
arch bridges, many are the work of some of the
world’s foremost architects and Engineers.
This master class looks at all aspects of masonry
arch bridge construction and the materials utilized
to determine the most appropriate repair
schemes.
Course length: 1 Day
The Structural Repair of
Historic Buildings
This 2 day seminar led by Ian Hume, aims to
provide anyone involved in the structural repair of
historic buildings with a sound understanding of
the philosophy of conservation and a better
understanding of the relationship between
structural engineering and conservation, of safety
issues and of the aesthetics of conservation
based structural repairs.
Ian Hume has had many years of experience in
dealing with the structural problems related to
historic buildings.
Course length: 2 Days
In 1975 he joined what eventually became
English Heritage and served as Chief Engineer to
that organisation from 1987 until 1997 when he
took early retirement to become consultant
conservation engineer.
Ian has been teaching the structural aspects of
the repair of historic buildings and structures for
some 20 years at various universities on their
postgraduate conservation courses. He is a
Conservation Accredited Engineer and is Chair of
the panel which set up, and now oversees, the
Conservation Accreditation Register for
Engineers (CARE).
Mortar Analysis Explained
Many projects demanded that samples of historic
mortars be analysed and it is all too often a ‘tick
box’ exercise required to gain listed building
consent or to meet funder’s requirements.
However analysis of existing and historic mortars
is an important step in the creation of well
matched and appropriate mortar specifications for
undertaking successful repairs.
This seminar will allow attendees to gain a greater
understanding of the process of mortar analysis
and to be able to understand and use the results
of mortar analysis to create better specifications
for replacement mortars.
Course length: ½ Day
Building Conservation
Explained
This introduction to building conservation will take
attendees through the basics of best practice and
dispel the many myths that abound when working
with historic buildings.
The seminar includes lively presentations of
various case studies allowing attendees to grasp
the rights and wrongs of historic building repair
and gain an understanding of how to ‘read’ a
building when approaching repairs. Planning and
listed building consent issues are explained and
various grant funding schemes that can enable
the conservation of our built heritage are
considered.
Course length: ½ Day
This CPD session ends with a site visit to a
live building to illustrate the many issues
covered within this course.
Aimed at building contractors, planners, local
authority staff, students and recently qualified
architects, surveyors and engineers who as
part of their workload are dealing with the
historic built environment or those building
professionals who have traditionally only
dealt with new build projects but would like to
gain an understanding of building
conservation work.
Specifying Mortars for Repair,
Restoration or New Build
Mortars are a fundamental part of unit masonry
construction and render work to a wide range of
different backgrounds, whether solid walls, on lath
or on cavity wall construction. Choosing or
designing the right mortar is essential to ensure
compatibility with the background surface, to keep
a building weather proof, and to the aesthetics of
the structure.
This introduction to specifying involves looking at
the performance characteristics of building
materials including substrates, relating this to
exposure, environment, location, the nature of the
mortar work and the time of year of working.
Course length: ½ Day
Natural Stone Replacement
& Surface Repairs
Undertaking stone replacement without careful
consideration of the composition of the existing
and new stone can have costly and devastating
consequences for traditional buildings.
This seminar will consider the options available
when stone replacement or indenting is required
and attendees will gain an understanding of best
practice and the analysis process in regards to
specifying suitable matching stone.
Often, a suitable match for existing stone isn’t
available or stone replacement can prove to be

Course length: 1 Day
We frequently assist building contractors on their building sites to successfully
complete conservation, repair and restoration projects. We work with
contractors to set up the site to ensure there is an appropriate site mixing area
for producing consistent, repeatable mortar mixes to ensure conformity to the
specification. On some projects there can be up to 5 or 6 different mortar
mixes for difference elements of a building, from foundation work, different
coats of render to high level exposed elements such as parapets and
chimneys so getting this right from the start is crucial.
We ensure with the contractor that the scaffolding is ‘fit for purpose’ to
undertake the works and provide a framework for hanging appropriate
protection. Then we get to work with the contractor in preparing walls for
pointing or rendering in a methodical manner, never working over finished
work which usually means it is a ‘top-down’ process. Our involvement can be
as little or as much as the contractor is comfortable with, plus we can visit site
at intervals to give the contractor comfort that the job is going to plan and that
the quality of the work is second to none.
BESPOKE TRAINING ON SITE TRAINING
If your company or organisation would like a course written specifically for a
particular job or one that meets the particular knowledge and skills for your
field of work then the Scottish Lime Centre Trust can help.
In the past we have delivered bespoke courses to contractors, architectural,
surveying and engineering practices specifically for their exacting
requirements. More recently we have been assisting local authority planners
through a programme of bespoke Continuing Professional Development
(CPD) to assess when sash and case windows are still in scope for repair
rather than being needlessly replaced, a more sustainable solution.
