2 Summary of the Workshop Days

2.1 Monday, 27th of August, 2018

On Monday, 27th of August, 2018 the Train-of-Trainers Workshop started at University of Innsbruck at 9.00 am. Prof. Wolfgang Streicher addressed all the participants and participants introduced themselves.

Workshop was started with an introduction of solar thermal systems and building integration and HVAC systems in Buildings. Basics of solar radiation, components of solar thermal plants, Hygienic requirements for domestic hot water, loads and heat consumption profile, hydraulics and control topics were discussed in the lecture. Prof. Streicher also talked about testing and certification of solar combi-systems. Under the topic European standards, classification of solar heating systems and the current status of European standards were discussed in minutiae.

It was a very interactive and informative session for most of the participants.

Despite the selection criteria which were prepared in preparation of the Workshops, there were some participants, who were not able to speak and understand the English language and therefore were not able to follow the workshop contents competently. This was caused some difficulties during the training progress.

Following picture was taken during the session.

In the afternoon after lunch, Prof. Streicher started the session with the discussion of HVAC in buildings. He also discussed the dimensioning of solar thermal plants with the participants. During the session he discussed the dimensioning of Domestic Hot Water (DHW) plants and dimensioning of swimming pools. He explained why and how the dimensioning of swimming pool is influenced by required temperature increase, operating time of swimming pool, and the type of coverage during the night.

2.2 Tuesday, 28th of August, 2018

On Tuesday, 28th of August, 2018 workshop was started at 9:00 am. Prof. Streicher started the session with introduction of SHW simulation tool.

Participants were asked to download the Software SHW for the simulation of solar thermal plants under the following link.

https://www.uibk.ac.at/bauphysik/forschung/shw.html.en

The participants were helped and guided to install the software on their computers.

After the installation of the software Prof. Streicher discussed and solved some real life examples with the participants and explained them the use and importance of the SHW simulation tool.

In the second half of the session Prof. Streicher gave lecture on the application of other simulation tools like, Polysun, Tsol etc. In this session he discussed the potentials of using Polysun & Tsol simulation tool in the design of solar thermal, heat pump and photovoltaic systems as well as combined systems. These simulation tools are useful to calculate the yield of a solar thermal system dynamically over the annual cycle. He showed how these tools are used to optimally design solar thermal systems, dimension collector arrays and storage tanks, and calculate the economic efficiency.

The afternoon session was ended with the discussion of legal European situation and Energy Performance of Building Directive (EPBD) with the participants. He shared and discussed the idea, how EU countries are aiming at decarbonizing the national building stocks by 2050.

What did you like about the workshop?

- The hands on work and material presented were all available and relevant. - The teaching staff where responsive to adjust teaching style/pace to better accommodate

participates, who varied in competency level greatly. - Dr. Wolfgang was extremely competent in the field, knowledgably and approachable to

dealing with any teaching issues. - Nice instructors ,variety of the topics and the great help in the social activities. - The new knowledge about heating and cooling techniques, the laboratories that we visited,

and the new softwares I learned.

What didn’t you like? What can be improved?

- Although the seminar room was spacious and comfortable, the projection could be better. In particular in software demonstration the screen was not clear in some cases.

- There should be screen recording/mouse click effect video recording to be supplemented with the training to ensure long lasting teaching. In particular when explaining software these initial steps should be supplied on video cast for future reference.

- The daily long hours of the training course especially after lunch. 4or 5 hours per day is enough to increase the benefits from the course.
