  • THE SPRING KARATE COURSE, PAIGNTON, DEVON

    April 14th - 19th 2019

Paignton is one of the many beautiful coastal resorts to be found in this unspoilt area of Devon. The mild climate and numerous small fishing boats and private craft give the area a Mediterranean look and its title of the English Riviera. If picturesque harbours and water-side restaurants don’t appeal, there is the Devon countryside, where industry has not intruded and where it is easy to feel you have stepped back in time to a more leisurely age.The course timetable will allow you plenty of time to enjoy both sea and country and we will provide help and information on what’s on and where. The accommodation for the Spring Karate Course is self-catering with all the main facilities such as bed linen, cooking and eating utensils, gas and electricity, being provided free of charge. The luxury mobile homes have a fully equipped kitchen, shower, toilet and lounge with colour TV.

KARATE SUMMER SCHOOL AND KARATE KIDS’ SUMMER CAMP, LANCASTER UNIVERSITY

August 4th - 9th 2019Lancaster University is situated at the southern tip of the Lake District, an area of outstanding natural beauty which attracts visitors from all over the World. For those looking for more thrilling diversions, the seaside resorts of Blackpool and Morecambe are within easy reach. There’s plenty to do at Blackpool Pleasure Beach, with over 125 rides, attractions and shows. The University is a ten minute bus ride from the centre of Lancaster allowing easy access to many shops, restaurants and the bus and rail stations. The course takes place at peak holiday season, when accommodation in the area is extremely hard to find, and the venue provides an ideal base. The accommodation is again self catering, with all main facilities free of charge. Course members have their own bedroom (all en-suite), with small groups sharing a kitchen.

SPRING KARATE COURSE AND KARATE SUMMER SCHOOLThese courses were devised by former KUGB International Competitors as a way of passing on their vast wealth of knowledge and experience - which is the origin of the title ‘Train with the Champions’. The first Karate Summer School took place at Lancaster University in August 1981 and the Spring Course was added in 1985.

Students come from all parts of the British Isles and every continent, which adds an International flavour and provides a great opportunity to exchange ideas with Karateka from other parts of the World.

Course costs have always been kept low and represent excellent value for money. Self-catering allows you to decide when and where you eat, and just as importantly, how much you will spend! THE KIDS CAMP at Lancaster University allows parents to leave their children at the course, with supervision, meals and extra activities provided by us.

Classes are divided into groups in accordance with your grade, so you should find it very easy to cope. Attending one of our courses will increase your knowledge of Shotokan Karate, making you fitter and more confident in your future training. There will be the opportunity for KUGB black belts to be assessed for an Instructor Qualification.

Emphasis is placed on the correct learning and development of the fundamentals of Kihon, Kata and Kumite. At the beginning of the course you will be put in to your relevant grade group: instruction will be tailored to your standard and you will train alongside students of a similar level.

There are special classes for those soon to take Dan Gradings and the feedback is that these prove highly beneficial.

If you are interested in training with Bo (Japanese Fighting Staff) then instruction by weapons expert Sensei lan Maclaren is provided free of charge.

  • Andy Sherry became interested in Martial Arts at the age of 12 and trained in Judo and Ju Jitsu before taking up Karate at the age of 16. He helped found the Liverpool Red Triangle Karate club and received his Shodan from Sensei Enoeda in 1966, the first British person to be awarded black belt status in Shotokan Karate. He was the KUGB’s first Kata champion in 1967, and the next year he became the first Grand Champion by winning both the Kata and Kumite events. He won the first EAKF European Kumite title in 1968, and went on to win many other Individual and team European Championship titles. He became the first British All-Styles Champion at Alexandra Palace, London, in 1966He was a skillful and courageous fighter, noted for his stunningly fast punching combinations. He also dominated the Kata event in the first four KUGB National Championships, and achieved many successes in European Championships until his retirement from competition in 1977. He has had many other firsts in his long Karate career, including; first Shotokan Black Belt, first 3rd Dan, and the first qualified British Shotokan International Referee. He holds the grade of 9h Dan.Alongside Sensei Enoeda, he coached the KUGB National Squad, which reached its peak at Sunderland in 1990, by defeating Japan to win the World Shotokan Karate-do Championship. Since Sensei Enoeda’s passing, the KUGB has taken numerous first, second and third International titles in both individual and team events. In 2005 he was elected as Chair of the Technical Committee for Karate England, the then governing body for Karate. He is totally dedicated to the technical development of Karate and still trains most mornings at the Red Triangle. He serves both with a passionate dedication that is an inspiration to others, and remains one of the most professional and respected Karate practitioners in the World.

THE COURSE INSTRUCTORSAll the Instructors are Senior Karate Union of Great Britain (KUGB) members who have served on the KUGB Technical Committee for many years. The KUGB is the largest and longest-established single-style Karate association in the UK.

For the last five years, I’ve been bringing my family to the TWC (Train With the Champions) Spring Course at Torbay. So, why do we keep coming back? It’s about the experience and expertise that you can tap into here. The course is delivered by the most Senior KUGB Instructors who challenge, instruct and develop you to such an extent, that your Karate benefits tremendously throughout the week. The physical and mental improvements to my own and my family’s Karate are fantastic. The training environment is both disciplined and friendly at the same time. It’s great to meet and train with different Karate-ka on the course and we have made a lot of new friends. There is plenty to do, both on the course and in the area. We see the TWC week as a Karate/holiday mix. If you train in Shotokan Karate then I would certainly recommend the TWC Course to you.

  • Sensei Terry O’Neill 8th Dan

    Sensei Bob Poynton 8th Dan

Bob Poynton was born on the 30th July l949 in Liverpool. He attended De La Salle Grammar School and his first job was as a Civil servant with the Customs and Excise. He saw “Odd Job” (Harold Sakata) in the James Bond film Goldfinger and decided that he wanted to take up Karate. In l965 at the age of l5, he applied to the Liverpool Red Triangle Karate Club for membership. He had to ‘fib’ about his age, as the minimum age for joining the club was l6. The day he started at the club, Sensei Kanazawa was teaching, so he had his first Karate lesson with a Japanese 5th Dan, ex-champion of Japan. He was first selected for the KUGB squad in 1968 to compete in the IAKF European Championship in Austria. He was so excited about being selected that he left without his Gi. In those days it was not possible to walk into a sports shop and buy a Gi, so he had to fight in his first championship in a borrowed Karate suit.In the 17 years, between 1968 and 1985, he represented England and Great Britain as a member of both the KUGB and All-Styles teams, achieving many placings in National and International events. In l976 he was the KUGB National Individual Kumite Champion and the Shotokan Cup Kata Champion on three consecutive years and Kumite for two of those years. He broke his leg in the semi-finals of the l974 European Championship and broke it in the same place at the KUGB National Championships the following year. This made him rely more on the use of punching – until he broke his hand several years later a week before the National Championships and reverted to kicking! At the ESKA European Championships in 1982 and 1983, he was voted ‘Best Technical Karateka’.Totally committed to the development and welfare of the KUGB, he says that he will strive to maintain good communication between the Executive and the membership, so that the members are informed of, and understand, the decisions reached on their behalf.

Terry O’Neill’s introduction to Kumite was in the individual event in the l967 KUGB National Championships, where, he says, he was soundly beaten in his first match. This state of affairs did not last long, as he won all his subsequent matches in the team event helping the Liverpool Red Triangle achieve its first of many victories. He earned a place on the All-Styles British Karate Team in 1968, and in 1969 won his first international title when he took the gold medal at the 1969 South African Games. Several months later, he became KUGB National Individual Kumite Champion – a title he went on to win a further three times. He was also seven times Individual Kata Champion and a member of the Red Triangle National Team Champions on no less than l3 occasions. A member of the KUGB International Squad from 1968 till 1982, he was also Captain of the British All-style Karate Team which made Karate history by beating the Japanese team in Paris at the 1972 World Championships and also a member of the highly successful British All-Styles Team which defeated Japan to win the l975 World Championship at Long Beach, USA. He was joint third in the 1973 World Championships that were held in Japan. At his fighting peak in the early 1970s, he was recognised as one of the World’s most fearsome competitors. A master of innovation he possessed a dynamic and flamboyant fighting style that few could match. Whenever he fought, the audience followed his every move, expecting the unexpected. Few were ever disappointed; for example - the unique rolling Kakato Geri that he used to defeat Steve Cattle in the 1977 KUGB finals was one of the most spectacular and innovative techniques ever witnessed at a Championship. After a knee injury retired Terry from competitive Karate, he pursued a successful acting career. In this he was greatly encouraged by his friends, Arnold Schwazenneger and Lynda La Plante.

  • Sensei Bob Rhodes 8th Dan

    Sensei Billy Higgins 8th Dan

Billy Higgins was born in Bootle, Liverpool on 14th August 1945. Taking a keen interest in sport from an early age, he took up Boxing, Gymnastics and Football while still at school. In 1965 he started to study Wado Ryu Karate and he very quickly established himself as a fast and skillful fighter. He was selected for the BKCC All Styles Squad and during training, he rapidly realised the high technical standard of the KUGB members of the Squad. As he was having difficulty travelling to his Wado club, he decided to join the KUGB in 1970.He competed in numerous International Competitions for England and Great Britain as a member of the KUGB and All-Styles teams.Between 1970 and 1981 he took three individual golds, two individual silver, two individual bronzes, six European Team golds, one Team silver and five team bronze medals in IAKF or WUKO (now EKF) championships. He has had a long and distinguished competition career, with many National and International titles to his credit. These include Individual 2nd in the WUKO All-Styles World Championship in Paris in 1972, twice European Middleweight Champion – 1974 and 1975, and runner-up in the l975 and 76 European All-Styles Championship. He was Captain of the highly successful 1975 British All Styles team that defeated the Japanese team to win the World Championship in Los Angeles. He was also a member of the very successful KUGB Senior International Team that won the Championship of Europe no less than five times! He is renowned for his fast and effective fighting style, particularly his lightening-fast Ashi-Barai/Gyaku-Tsuki combination which devastated his opponents and won him many events. Also noted for his dynamic Tai Sabaki, he is a popular teacher and examiner, always in demand around the clubs.

Bob Rhodes first competed as a green belt at the KUGB Great Britain National Championships where as a member of the Leeds SKC kumite team they came second. He won the individual events at the Northern Regional Championships several times for both kata and kumite and also team events. Bob achieved finals positions in the G.B. Nationals for kata and kumite and Bob was a member of the team that won the team kumite in 1973. During this time Bob Rhodes achieved a position on the England Karate Squad. For eight years Bob was a member of both the KUGB National Squad and the Great Britain All-Styles Squad for which the best fighters were chosen from all the different Karate styles. When Bob was in the KUGB team it was coached by Sensei Enoeda, the Chief European Instructor. The team was successful in winning many International and European team kumite events and in participating in World Championships. Bob represented the KUGB in the Great Britain All-Styles Championships, where as a member of the kumite team they won several times. In the G.B. All-Styles Championships individual kumite events Bob achieved distinguished 2nd and 3rd placings. For the Great Britain All-Styles Team, coached by Sensei Steve Arneil, Bob was again successful with the kumite team in coming first in many International events against France, Japan and Sweden for example. He was also successful with the same team in European and World team kumite events. Bob’s International career culminated in victory when, at the age of 29, he was part of the kumite squad that beat Japan to win the World Championships in California in 1975.After retiring from International competition Bob was elected Northern Regional Officer for the KUGB where he was responsible for organising competitions and courses and teaching the Northern Regional Squad. Bob Rhodes was Northern Regional Officer for fifteen years.Bob is a National, European and World Championship Referee, responsible for refereeing the finals in many of these competitions.

  • SHOTOKAN KARATE DVDs

These Shotokan Karate volumes were produced in 1985. They have proved a valuable learning aid for many students in their progress from beginner to Black Belt and beyond: although there have been some small changes in the Katas they will continue to do so.

All the Katas are performed in a way that will aid observation and are an ideal way to supplement dojo training.

VOLUME I contains the following Shotokan Katas:

KIHON KATA, HEIAN SHODAN, HEIAN NIDAN, HEIAN SANDAN, HEIAN YONDAN and HEIAN GODAN. TEKKI SHODAN, TEKKI NIDAN and TEKKI SANDAN. BASSAI DAI, KANKU DAI, ENPI, JION and HANGETSU

In addition, the Instructors perform and explain the following basic and advanced Kumite training methods:

    GOHON KUMITE (Five-step sparring)

KIHON IPPON KUMITE (Basic one-step sparring)

JIYU IPPON KUMITE (Semi Free-style sparring)

    KAISHI IPPON KUMITE (Reaction sparring)

    JIYU KUMITE (Free-style sparring)

VOLUME II contains the following Shotokan Katas: BASSAI SHO, KANKU SHO, NIJU-SHIHO, JITTE, JIIN, SOCHIN, CHINTE, WANKAN, ROHAI (Meikyo), GANKAKU, UNSU, GOJU-SHIHO DAI and GOJU-SHIHO SHO.

In addition, some of the Instructors favourite competition techniques are demonstrated and explained.

    Sensei Frank Brennan 8th Dan

Frank Brennan’s introduction to Karate Competition was in 1974, when he competed in the KUGB Northern Regional Championships. He entered the Junior Kata event, which he won. He was a 4th Kyu at the time and it was indicative of things to come that he won the first competition that he ever entered. His introduction to Kumite Shiai was even more dramatic. In 1975, while fighting for the Red Triangle Team, Bob Poynton broke his leg in one of the matches. The team had no reserves, so the young Brown Belt, who had only entered the kata event, was suddenly in the final of the Team Kumite against Leeds. He fought one of Leeds most experienced fighters, Andy Harris, and decisively beat him with a fast Mawashi Geri combination to help Red Triangle win yet again. His first International appearance was with the KUGB Squad in the European Championships in Sweden in 1978, where he came 2nd in the Senior Kata Event. The next year, in Belgium, he won the Grand Championship of Europe, taking both the Kumite and Kata Events, a feat that he has achieved no less than four times. As a fighter, he is rather unique in that he has no particular speciality - he is equally at home using hands or feet, and quite often surprises his opponents with a very dynamic combination of some of the more unusual hand or foot techniques. As a Senior member of the KUGB International Squad, the most recent highlight of his career was leading his team to victory in the 1990 World Shotokan Championships at Sunderland. He is held in great respect Internationally - in an interview at the World Championships, the Japanese Team Coach, Ex World Champion Masahiko Tanaka said that the one man that the whole Japanese Team were specifically trained to beat was Frank Brennan.Frank is now coach to the KUGB Junior Squad and is proud to have produced Junior European and World Champions. As well as coaching the Junior Squad, Frank is in great demand as an Instructor both Nationally and Internationally. He is also an active and valued member of the KUGB Technical Committee.
