To manage your time and work effectively, you will often need to prioritise (make decisions about) whether something is urgent or non-urgent, and whether it is important or unimportant.

Read the following scenario Jenny (not her real name) is a home based support worker. She turns up to support Mrs Smith, an elderly woman, with her showering. It is also the day that Jenny does the vacuuming and the grocery shopping for the week. Mrs Smith has finished her breakfast and is ready to have a shower. Jenny supervises Mrs Smith’s transfer into the shower cubicle using the rail. Mrs Smith then washes herself while Jenny makes the bed. After Jenny has supervised Mrs Smith with her transfer out of the shower, and has assisted her to dress, Mrs Smith says that she is feeling sick and would like to lie down. Jenny helps Mrs Smith safely on to her bed and asks how she is feeling. Mrs Smith says that she cannot feel her right arm and her right leg feels funny. Mrs Smith becomes confused, does not know who Jenny is, and then her speech becomes unclear. Mrs Smith is incontinent and wets the bed. If you were Jenny, think about how you would prioritise your time in this situation. Complete the table on the following page.
