Moonlight Cloud's natural ability was signposted witha facile 2 1/2-length debut win at Deauville, followedby a six-length verdict over Longchamp's seven panelsin September. Rated better at that point than heresteemed stable companion Goldikova (Ire) (Anabaa) byFreddy Head, she took her chance in the G1 PrixJean-Luc Lagardere on Arc day, but failed to fire asWootton Bassett (GB) (Iffraaj {GB}) dominated, stayingon into fourth. Back with a bang in the G3 PrixImprudence over seven at Maisons-Laffitte Apr. 7, thehomebred was only seventh behind Blue Bunting(Dynaformer) in the May 1 Newmarket mile Classic, after which her trainer looked at dropping her in trip.Second to Sahpresa (Sahm) in Longchamp's G3 Prix duPalais-Royal back over seven furlongs June 4, she wasmore positively ridden over that course and distance inLongchamp=s G3 Prix de la Porte Maillot over sevenfurlongs July 2, and held on by a diminishing head toset up a tilt at this prize.

Anchored early as the pace proved strong, she wasout of trouble trailing the main pack. Dream Ahead, buried in the main pack by William Buick, started toflounder with a quarter mile remaining, butStrawbridge=s white silks barely rippled as ThierryJarnet and Moonlight Cloud cruised past him. WoottonBassett began to tread water on the front end, andSociety Rock ground his way into contention, but thefilly was shaken up approaching the furlong pole, andher dramatic acceleration saw her surge into a decisiveadvantage. After receiving one slap with the whip, shewas pushed out for a commanding success. In theprocess, she became the first 3-year-old filly to win thisrace since Dead Certain (GB) (Absalom {GB}) scoredwhen it still had Group 2 status in 1990. AI was reallydisappointed that she ran a bad race in the Guineas, asI always said she was a top-class filly, and I never lostfaith in her,@ Head offered, adding, AThe obvious race isthe G1 Prix de la Foret [at Longchamp Oct. 2], but Ihadn't made any plans before this so I'm not sure.@Dream Ahead's trainer David Simcock said of thefavorite, AI'm not making excuses, as when the gapcame he didn't quicken, but he seems fine so the planis still to run in the [Sept. 3] G1 Haydock Sprint Cup.@

Cloud Nine for Strawbridge... Venturawas a hot prospect at the 2001 Tattersalls DecemberSale, and owner/breeder George Strawbridge went to500,000gns ($748,177) to secure the then-3-year-oldas a broodmare prospect. Ventura=s first foal, CedarMountain (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}), aired in the Round TableS. and was second in the GII Sunset H. at Hollywoodfor Strawbridge. Strawbridge sent Ventura back toTATDEC in 2009, where she sold for 58,000gns toCormac McCormack Bloodstock. She produced a fillyby Manduro (Ger) for breeder Paget Bloodstock inIreland in 2010, was sold to David Redvers Bloodstockfor 260,000gns at TATDEC 2010, and had a filly byMontjeu (Ire) in March.

Two-for-four for trainer Mike Hushion during hisabbreviated sophomore season, the bay was back atthe track for a few months last term, posting a series ofworks between June 15 and Aug. 1. But he didn=t getback on track until returning to take an optional claimerat Gulfstream Apr. 15 for Allen Iwinski after nearly 17months on the shelf. The gelding made it two in a rowin a Parx allowance test May 8, and added theLongfellow romp to make it three straight. Second asthe 1-2 chalk in the Mr. Prospector S. at MonmouthJuly 4, he was the second-longest shot on the boardstepping up to the Grade I ranks.

The Saratoga strip, listed as good after overnightrains, was speed-favoring, and jockey Joe Bravo tookfull advantage of that fact. Bravo sent Sean Avery tothe front through rapid splits of :21.91 and :44.56.Odds-on Trappe Shot was inching ever closer as theydrove down the lane, but Sean Avery held on to get thenod. It was the first Grade I win for Allen Iwinski, whogave up training for two years while battling hepatitis inthe mid-2000s. AThe race itself was just so exciting,@Iwinski said. AGoing right down to the wire, head-and-head. Are we going to get there? Are we beat? He justhung in.@ Sean Avery was in Iwinski=s barn for his lonestart at two, a third in maiden special weight companyat Saratoga. AThe owners called me up in Florida andasked if I wanted Sean back,@ Iwinski said. ADo youhave to ask that question? So they sent him to me, andhe was training fabulous. He was rehabilitated withLynn Boutee in Ocala, Florida. When she sent the horseto me, he quickly came to hand. We worked him maybefour times off a 15-month layoff, so she really did mostof the work and the preparation for his comeback.@Black Swan is a partnership headed by John DeStefanothat includes Sheryl Schwartz, the wife of Barry K.Schwartz. Supplemented for this valuable prize this week,Dancing Rain never looked in any danger ofsurrendering the early advantage crafted out by KierenFallon and led her rivals on a merry dance to becomethe Classic=s first British-trained winner. Connectionshad learned much about the chestnut when she wassecond in the Listed Swettenham Stud Fillies= Trial S. atNewbury May 13 and more forcing tactics wereemployed in the G1 Epsom Oaks. That ploy led toClassic glory in the June 3 highlight, but when she wasunable to get to the front in the July 18 Irish equivalentat The Curragh she could fare no better than fifth. Infront before the first bend here, she was sent to sleepby Fallon and lobbed along before being asked toincrease the tempo three furlongs from home. Turningthe screw from there, she was clear up the straight asDjumama made her way into the silver medal spot. Herwin capped a red-letter day for her dam Rain Flower(Ire) (Indian Ridge {Ire}), who is also the second dam ofthe G2 Debutante S. winner Maybe (Ire) (Galileo {Ire}). AEverything went according to plan,@ said Fallon. AI gotto the front easily enough and in the end the Germanfillies weren=t good enough to catch her.@ The runner-up=s trainer Andreas Lowe commented, ADjumama ran agreat race and had the winner not been supplemented, she could be a Classic winner now.@

La Collina started out with a defeat of Mahaazen (Ire)(Cape Cross {Ire}) in an extended seven-furlong maidenat Limerick June 11 before finding only Maybe a necktoo strong in the Silver Flash. Half an hour after thatrival had advertised that form when extending herunbeaten record in style in the Debutante, the punterswere still ignoring the Kevin Prendergast trainee whoraced in rear early. The early pace was genuine asSeamus Heffernan ensured that Power gave LilbourneLad (Ire) (Acclamation {GB}) no peace on the front endalong with Parish Hall (Ire) (Teofilo {Ire}). That runner establisheda clear lead passing the furlong marker, but the fillywas hitting top gear and dived up his inner with animpressive spell of acceleration. Horse of the Year Campaign for Tizway... Trainer Jim Bond, still basking in the glow of his winin the GI Whitney Invitational H. with Tizway (Tiznow),said he believed the 6-year-old has a solid shot at Horse

of the Year honors. AIf he winsthe [Oct. 1 GI Jockey Club]Gold Cup, I feel like he=s 2-1to be the leader,@ said Bond.AWhen you win the Met in thetime that he did it and theway that he did it, and comeback with a pretty crushingrace [Saturday], if he can winthe Gold Cup it=s going to takea really good horse to

outshine him at the end of the year, as long as he staystogether.@ Tizway stopped the timer in 1:32 4/5 whentaking the GI Met Mile H. May 30. Criminal Type(Alydar) pulled off the Met Mile/Whitney double in1990, and was named Horse of the Year. Only onehorse, In Excess (Ire) (Siberian Express), has annexedboth races since, but he lost out on the title to GIBreeders= Cup Classic hero Black Tie Affair (Ire)(Miswaki). Explaining the dark bay=s emergence as thetop older horse on the East Coast at an age when mosttop runners have been retired, Bond said that the footproblems that have plagued Tizway are no longer anissue. The conditioner is so confident in his charge=ssoundness, he has mapped out his training regimen forthe next two months. ABelieve it or not, I=ve alreadybooked his works through the Gold Cup,@ said Bond.AThis morning, I was here at 3:30 [plotting out themorning schedule]. When you can do that with a horse, you=ve got a big edge. When you gotta say, >Well, today, we=ve got to jog. We can=t do this--things aren=tgood enough,= it makes a big difference, especiallywhen you are running against Grade I-type fields.@

Bated Breath is Nunthorpe-bound... Trainer Roger Charlton yesterday pointed at the G1 Coolmore Nunthorpe S. for Khalid Abdullah=s BatedBreath (GB) (Dansili {GB}). Runner-up to Dream Ahead(Diktat {GB}) in the G1 July Cup at Newmarket July 9,the four-year-old will drop to five furlongs for the firsttime in the Aug. 19 York contest. AWe=re aiming at theNunthorpe,@ his trainer said. ALast time was definitely astep up, but he was beaten by a better horse on theday. I got the feeling that he could have gone a stridequicker, so dropping back to five and being able tobowl along and go his pace might well suit him atYork.@

Morning Line to Undergo Tests... GISW Morning Line (Tiznow), who trailed the fieldhome after pressing the pace in the GI WhitneyInvitational H., will be the subject of a completeveterinary examination this week, and then likely will head to ownerWill Farish=s Lane=s End Farm inKentucky. AThat=s the best farm inthe world, and maybe they canfurther evaluate him, take him toDr. [Larry] Bramlage and see whathe says,@ said trainer Nick Zito.AHe=s obviously not right. We haveto figure out what is it. I knowthey=ll make a good decision.@ The4-year-old captured the GI CarterH. in April, but was off the board in two subsequentoutings. AObviously, he=s not the same horse,@ said Zito.AWe=re all disappointed, the stable=s all disappointed.@He added, AWhat=s upsetting to me is, I know how goodthe horse is. He had five great races in a row, from the[win in the GII] Pennsylvania Derby on. And the Carterwas spectacular.@ Morning Line was briefly sidelined bya foot problem that surfaced after a workout atChurchill following the Carter. AWe X-rayed him, andwe thought we were getting by that,@ Zito explained.AWe went to Monmouth, and obviously he=s not thesame since that issue.@

AGood horses have been selling welland, as long as there is no change inpeople wanting good horses, than I=vegot to be optimistic because I reallythink that this is one of the strongestgroups that I=ve ever brought here,@Bandoroff said. With only 160 yearlings cataloguedand selling spread over two nights, the

Saratoga sale is all about quality over quantity, according to Boyd Browning.

AI think people are looking for quality horses,@ heexplained. AAnd I think they are going to find a highnumber of quality horses out of the catalogue inSaratoga. I think a large percentage of the horses in thiscatalogue will make a lot of short lists. There isn=t ahuge catalogue, but there will be a huge percentage ofhorses that people will find attractive.@ This year=s catalogue is slimmer by 42 head from the2010 version. Browning attributed the reduction toboth a smaller foal cropand a stringent selectionprocess. AI think we all continue totry to be demanding anddisciplined in the horsesthat we accept for thesales and I think ourconsignors try to be verydisciplined in the horsesthat they send to the salesto try to minimize themistakes,@ Browningcommented. ABecause ifyou make a mistake in theworld that we=re playing inright now, you pay asignificant penalty, soeveryone is trying hard to get it right. The bull=s eyemight continue to be shrinking, and maybe we=ll get alittle reversal of that beginning in 2011, but thus farthat bull=s eye has certainly not gotten any bigger andcontinues to be very hard to pinpoint.@ The two-day format with so few horses on offer, may be a deterrent to some people. ANow, some people don=t want to pay the expensesand make the trip to Saratoga,@ acknowledgedGlencrest Farm=s David Greathouse. AIt would be nice ifthey had more horses to draw more people.@ Still Browning, is satisfied with the sale=s format. AWe=ve got a format that we=re happy with and thathas proven popular through the test of time,@ heexplained. AWe=re comfortable with it.@ Browning is confident the strength of the sale will beborne out in time. AWe hope that people are picking up a catalogue in2013 and saying, >Wow, look at all those good horsesthat were graduates of the 2011 Saratoga sale. Theywere right, they had a hell of a group of horses upthere. I should have bid again. Wish I hadn=t quit,=@Browning said.

Hip 55, c, Tapit--Sunny Morning, by Tale of the CatConsigned by Gainesway, agent

This gray yearling is the first foal of his dam, SunnyMorning, who is a half-sister to GSP Langston (PineBluff). AThis colt is proving popular here on the salesgrounds,@ commented Gainesway=s Michael Hernon.AHe is a big, rangy, strong horse who continues todevelop. He=s got a lot of class and it looks like he=ll bea two-turn horse. Tapit continues to emerge as a veryserious young stallion and the Tapit colts have reallystarted to come to the fore this year, balancing his veryhigh success rate with fillies.@

Hip 56, colt, Medaglia d=OroBSupercharger, by A.P. Indy

Consigned by Taylor Mades Sales Agency, Agent LXX Having drawn plenty of attention in the days leadingup to the sale is this son of Darley sire Medaglia d=Oro.The Apr. 11 foal is out of Supercharger (A.P. Indy), afull-sister to GISW Girolamo and GSWs Daydreamingand Accelerator. The 16-year-old mare is alreadyresponsible for GI Kentucky Derby hero Super Saver(Maria=s Mon) and Brethren (Distorted Humor). AHe is ahalf to a Kentucky Derby winner, he is bred on thesame Medaglia d=Oro/A.P. Indy cross as the KentuckyOaks winner [Plum Pretty],@ explained Taylor Made=sMark Taylor. ASo if people want to win Classic racesand have a stallion, then he=s the no-brainer. He has gota lot of Medaglia d=Oro in him. Supersaver is a beautifulhorse, and this horse is just a jaw-dropper. The marehas obviously been throwing beautiful foals.@ As for thecolt=s physical appeal, Taylor added, AHe=s a hunk. Hehas a really square hip with good leg and bone. He is aflawless mover too.A

Hip 61, filly, A.P. IndyBTempus Fugit,by Alphabet Soup

The 11-year-old mare, who is ahalf-sister to GSP Color Me Up (Aptitude) and SPChippewa Trail (General Royal), is from the family ofGrade III winner Spite the Devil. AThe filly has beenshowing so well up here and now that her sire ispensioned, she is a collector=s item,@ said Bluewater=sMeg Levy. APhysically, I think she goes more towardthe mare. She has the head and the eye of an A.P.Indy, but she might be off the blocks earlier than mostA.P. Indys I=ve seen. She has a really good hip andmuscle tone, and she looks like she can be a good 2-year-old. A According to Levy, the bay=s dispositionhas held up as well as the physical. AShe has been veryforward. Sometimes, given the new environment, horses can sometimes shrink back when you go to getthem, but not her. She always is always very forwardand eager.@

Treated with Lasixfor the GII Remsen S. at Aqueduct Nov. 27, the baycolt backed out of it early and wound up last, beaten20 lengths in a five-horse field. He joined the Godolphinstring in Dubai over the winter and made oneappearance, finishing a close fifth in the G3 UAE 2000Guineas on Meydan=s Tapeta surface Feb. 10. Upon hisrepatriation, the Pennsylvania-bred was fourth in theGIII Bay Shore S. at Aqueduct Apr. 9, and had beenworking strongly in recent weeks. The 6-5 chalktraveled like a dream down the backstretch as second-choice Bulaga (Orientate) showed the way. He splithorses to challenge for the lead entering the stretch, and the race was over in a flash. Jockey David Cohenconfidently handled his mount through the lane for apopular 10-length success. Nacho Saint (Yes It=s True)was second throughout, while Bulaga faded to sixth. The Godolphin contingent was on hand to have thegroup photo taken after the race. Race 1 - Gleaming S. 1 3/16mT, 3yo Restricted to 3-year-olds who haven't won a stake over a mile on turfthis year, the Gleaming features some lightly raced, up-and-comingtypes. #3 Eternal Ruler is very interesting considering that he only fellby a head two back to morning line favorite Seal Cove with a toughertrip--they're listed at 8-1 and 5-2 respectively. Eternal Ruler came toAmerica with a win and a second against weak competition in Britainand debuted stateside for Bobby Ribaudo in race one (8.5fT 'NIX') onthe June 11 Belmont Stakes undercard (TDN Video). Both he and SealCove were off slow, but while Seal Cove made a wide, sweeping moveto challenge on the turn for home, Rajiv Maragh opted to keep EternalRuler inside. Seal Cove's bid was visually impressive, but as he waspowering down the center of the course unimpeded, Eternal Ruler wasstymied in behind a wall of horses, searching for a seam and tappingon the breaks repeatedly. By the time Eternal Ruler was clear, SealCove had already gotten the jump on him, but the import turned on thejets in the waning strides to make it a tight one. Seal Cove covered waymore ground, but Eternal Ruler's loss of momentum made thedifference in the order of finish. Eternal Ruler was admittedlydisappointing last time in a 1 1/4-mile optional claimer back at BigSandy 18 days after his first appearance--he finished fourth behindtoday's second-choice Sky Blazer with no trip excuse--but he figured toregress off of that first U.S. effort, as many European imports do. Addto that generalization a glance at Ribaudo's stats, and there's plenty ofreason to toss out Eternal Ruler's last race. With a gap of eight to 30days between starts, Ribaudo wins at a 9% clip with a $1.42 ROI (alltrainer stats courtesy off DRF Formulator). When he gives his runners31-60 days to recover, however, as in this case, the conditioner scoresat a 20% rate with a gaudy $3.94 ROI. The distance is a minorconcern, but look for Eternal Ruler to cycle back to his first U.S. start(or better) at a much bigger price than Seal Cove. Yesterday’sResults: Atta Boy Roy was beaten to the lead by Sean Avery andnever factored after that. For more Saratoga analysis, visit the TDNBlog or follow Brian on Twitter.

BATTLE OF THE EXES

Mike Smith and Chantal Sutherland squared off in theABattle of the Exes@ in the fourth race at Del MarSunday, a maiden-claiming event going a mile on theall-weather. Smith, aboard 6-5 chalk Joker Face (It=s NoJoke), broke on top, and never looked back, winning by2 1/4 lengths. video replay AI tell you, I've been taking heat for the last three orfour days from the boys [in the jockeys room],@ saidSmith. ARightly so. I had to win this one. They wouldnever let me live it down if I didn't. The key for metoday was that my horse was right on his toes.[Trainer] Peter [Eurton] had him ready. He put blinkerson for this. I think I won it going away from there fast.I tried to take it wide and get her to drop inside, but sherode it smart. She didn't fall for my trap. At the halfmile (pole), I took a peek back and saw she was comingon, so I let my horse go. And that was it. He just drewaway from there. Someone asked if I thought about thepossibility of letting the woman win, and the answer tothat was >no.' There was pressure here; pressure towin. For my gender and all that. But there was fun, too.Look, I grew up doing this [in New Mexico]. I knewhow to do it and it was fun." Sutherland added, AMike rode a really good race. Allcredit to him. To be honest, I'm glad it is over. Therewas a lot of pressure around this; a ton of media workleading up to it. But it was fun, too. All in all, I enjoyedit. And the cheers from the fans here today werespecial. The fans were awesome. That made it allworthwhile."
