Trainers Training Programme at Regional Research Centre, ICAR-CIFA, Rahara,
Kolkata
Program Title: Aquaculture Pond Production and Productivity Management with Special
Reference to Climate Change
Dates: 26-30 August 2019
Location/Venue: Regional Research Centre, ICAR-CIFA, Rahara, Kolkata-700118
Introduction:
Technological intervention in post-independence era has led India to the second largest aquaculture
producer in the world. Pond and tanks are the key resources for aquaculture production in the country
where soil, water, nutrient and live fish food organisms management play a vital role in maintaining
production level. With the increasing trend of aquaculture productivity of Indian water bodies and
diversified carp species, there is ample scope in increasing per capita availability of fish. With an annual
growth rate of over 6%, aquaculture has shown to be major option for production and supply to the
consumer. In this situation human resource development and dissemination of knowledge has significant
role for development of aquaculture in the country. The honourable Prime minister of India, has given the
challenges such as to improve the soil fertility, shifting from traditional ways of farming to scientific
technique for making land more fertile. He also emphasizes on more crop from per drop of water and
soil productivity in per unit area but also to reduce the cropping duration time. In this context, the current
training programme “Aquaculture Pond Production and Productivity Management with special
reference to Climate Change” would sensitize the officers of Fisheries Department of different states
and other participants with advances made in freshwater aquaculture.
Inauguration:
The programme was inaugurated by the chief guest Dr. J. N. Saha, Ex Principal Scientist of ICAR-CIFA
in the presence of our regional centre’s staff. The programme was started by lightning the lamp along
with the ICAR song. In his inaugural programme, Dr. Saha told about the importance of pond
management for higher fish production. For proper pond management, soil and water quality play a vital
role. Thus, soil and water analysis and maintenance is highly needed for the optimum production. Dr. S.
Adhikari, Principal Scientist and SIC of the centre and also the Course Director of the programme briefly
narrated about the course designed for this training and he also spoke about the importance of this
programme for doubling the farmer’s income through better production and productivity management
under climate change scenario. Dr. P. P. Chakrabarti, Principal Scientist spoke about the technology
available in the institute and the livelihood of the poor farmers can be improved with the proper
dissemination of these technologies. Dr. B. N. Paul, Principal Scientist proposed the vote of thanks. Dr
R.N. Mandal, Principal Scientist was the master of ceremony of the inaugural programme.
Classroom sessions:
Total 13 lectures were delivered by 08 resource persons in 5 days. Dr. S.Adhikari delivered four lectures
on “Pond soil quality and management”, “Fertilization in fish ponds”, “Water budget of freshwater
aquaculture ponds” and “Climate change and aquaculture environment” Dr P.P.Chakrabarti, Principal
Scientist delivered a lecture on “Water quality in freshwater aquaculture pond”. Dr. D. N.Chattopadhyay,
Principal Scientist delivered a lecture on “Nursery pond management”. Dr. B.N.Paul, Principal Scientist
delivered a lecture on “Feeds and feeding of carp”. Dr. R.N. Mandal, Principal Scientist delivered two
lectures on “Role of natural fish food organisms in aquaculture” and “Pond preparation and aquaculture
practice in sewage fed water bodies”. Mr. Arabinda Das, Scientist delivered a lecture on “Pond
ecosystems: Energy flow and nutrient cycling”. Mr Ajmal Hussan, Scientist delivered a lecture on
“Problems associated with fertilizer management in fish culture”. Ms. Farhana Hoque, Scientist delivered
a lecture on” Water quality and fish health”. Dr. S. Adhikari, SIC and Course Director and Mr Ajmal
Hussan, Scientist together delivered a lecture on “Diversification for sustainability: aquaculture in the
changing face of freshwater and climatic condition”. The participants actively interacted with all the
resources persons during the lecture sessions.
Demonstration:
We have given practical demonstration to the participants on soil, and water analysis for different
important parameters. Practical class of identification of different fish food organisms was also conducted
and for this the participants were taken to the nearby fish ponds. We also showed fish netting to
participants in the field.
Field Visit:
Field visit was arranged on 29 August at Jhagrasisha, East Kolkata wetland (EKW), Ramsar site, where
the owner of the farm explained the activities of sewage-fed aquaculture. Another is Kharibari fisheries
area. The participants also interacted with the farmers regarding the different activities of the farm.
Valediction:
The training programme was completed on 30 August, 2019 after a valedictory function. In this
programme, the participants spoke about the programme and they all highly appreciated the programme.
They also expressed their gratefulness and gratitude to the NFDB for sponsoring the programme. The
participation certificate was distributed to the trainees. This programme was concluded after National
Anthem.
