About the Trainer:

Career Summary & Goals

Over the course of my career, I have been a trainer, instructional course designer and training Supervisor / Consultant. My strength is in creating highly interactive, media rich classroom courses that use questions, role-plays, scenarios, simulations, case studies, and practice exercises to facilitate teaching and learning. I also have a talent for making complex subjects easy to understand and fun to learn. I have a real passion for teaching and learning and I give people the ongoing coaching and support they need to be successful.

As a direct line supervisor, I have led several training programs in Safety and Security, including the highly successful ZBV Back Scatter X Ray training for the Security Directorate of Qatar Petroleum. Our training department was noted for having dedicated training and interaction of all the regions in the company. The reason for my success has been in fostering a team oriented (Qatari Nationals, Nepalese + Omani’s) work environment where everyone helped and coached one another and people were acknowledged for their outstanding efforts.

Currently I run my own consultancy business named Risk Control Specialist. From home base in Cape Town, South Africa and free lancing / consulting Internationally. I am committed to providing classroom and OJT training to job seekers and employers.

Professional Philosophy / Mission Statement

My training philosophy is based on the Socratic method where you teach by asking questions vs. simply talking or lecturing. This method is more engaging for the student and forces the student to figure things out for themselves, thus more effectively cementing learning in the student’s mind. I believe in helping people learn and grow by providing them with equal measures of challenge and support. The students’ goals and our training provide the challenge and our ongoing coaching provides the necessary support for them to succeed.

001 – (Security) – Active Shooter, Public Response Training and Situational Awareness

[5 Day]

Total chaos typically ensues in an active shooter situation. This course will give your organization the program

planning and training suggestions which will help you minimize that. We begin with what is the most critical element of the plan - effective and timely communication to local public emergency services and simultaneously

the communication to all of your facility/property occupants. We will then outline the general deployment guidelines for on-site security forces and their cooperation with arriving public emergency service personnel. Establishment of a command post to coordinate the lockdown of the facility and the apprehension of the shooter will be covered. General emergency response priorities will be discussed. The course will provide suggestions

regarding the training for response team members and the general training for all facility occupants. An active shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and other populated area. In most cases, active shooters use firearms and there is no pattern or method to their selection

of victims. Active shooter situations are unpredictable and evolve quickly. All employees can help prevent and prepare for potential active shooter situations. This course provides

guidance to individuals, including managers and employees, so that they can prepare to respond to an active

shooter situation.

Content : This course is not written for law enforcement officers.

Objectives

At the end of this training course, you will learn to:

• The Active Shooter Threat : an introduction to modern society’s nightmare

• Identify the controls that apply to basic security concepts • Analysis tools to improve situational awareness and decisiveness during an incident • Key elements of an effective Active Shooter Emergency Response Plan • Principles for assisting emergency services during an incident

• Recognize potential workplace violence indicators. • Describe actions to take to prevent and prepare for potential active shooter incidents. • Describe how to manage the consequences of an active shooter incident.

002 – (Investigation) – Accident Investigation for Trainers and Supervisors [5 Day]

In spite of all our best efforts, accidents and incidents occasionally occur. These unplanned or undesired events

can adversely affect a company’s work operations and may include work-related injuries, occupational illnesses,

property damage, spills and fires. Critically all incidents should therefore be thoroughly investigated demonstrating

a proven company-wide process of efficiency and effectiveness linked to the Safety Management System (SMS).

The more serious the incident the more extensive the investigation.

However, even a minor incident or near-miss incident also requires a thorough investigation as this may reveal

significant potential for a serious future incident should the conditions be left uncorrected. While incidents seem to

happen for obvious reasons, there may be things that contribute to an accident which are not always immediately

apparent. Attendance on this training course will provide you with the confidence and necessary professionalism to

enable a thorough Accident Investigation as soon as practicable after the event.

• Why and who conducts an investigation?

• Investigation methodology, the essential six-step process

• Characteristics of an effective incident/accident analysis programme

• The two major components that contribute to the cause of an incident

• Why investigations must be constructive, professional, credible and timely

• Safety Management Systems on promoting a pro-active Safety Culture

Objectives

At the end of this training course, you will learn to:

• Develop the knowledge and skills required to investigate all adverse events.

• Understand the causes of accidents and ill-health.

• Understand the elements that combine to form an accident.

• Develop confidence & professionalism in investigating, interviewing & reporting

• Ensure all employees & contractors are aware of the SMS and ‘Safety Culture’

007 – (Management Systems) – An Introduction to the Development, Implementation and

Management of ISO 9001 : 2008 [5 Day]

An introduction for anyone involved in the development, implementation and management of a QMS based on ISO 9001:2008, this training course has been designed to help your organization demonstrate commitment to quality and customer satisfaction, as well as continuously improving your quality management systems (QMS). Its objective is to provide participants with an overview of the purpose and requirements of ISO 9001:2008 as a tool for business improvement.

If you plan to complete other ISO 9001 training, such as internal auditing, auditor/lead auditor training or our internal QMS auditor training, this course teaches the knowledge and understanding of ISO 9001 that underpin auditing skills.

008 – (Leadership and Management)– Behavioral Based Safety (BBS) [ 5 Day]

Behaviour-Based Safety (BBS) is the "application of science of behaviour change to real world problems" or "A process that creates a safety partnership between management and employees that continually focuses people's attentions and actions on theirs, and others, daily safety behaviour. " BBS "focuses on what people do, analyses why they do it, and then applies a research-supported intervention strategy to improve what people do". At its very core, BBS is based on a larger scientific field called Organizational behaviour management.

In a safety management system based upon the hierarchy of hazard control, BBS may be applied to internalise hazard avoidance strategies or administrative controls (including use of PPE), but should not be used in preference to the implementation of reasonably practicable safety measures further up the hierarchy. To be successful a BBS program must include all employees, from the CEO to the front-line workers including hourly, salary, union employees, contractors and sub-contractors. To achieve changes in behaviour, a change in policy, procedures and/or systems most assuredly will also need some change. Those changes cannot be done without buy-in and support from all involved in making those decisions BBS is not based on assumptions, personal feeling, and/or common knowledge. To be successful, the BBS program used must be based on scientific knowledge. Objectives

At the end of this training course, you will learn to:

• Understand accident causation theories • Be able to outline the principles of measuring health and safety performance • Understand the key factors that led to several international disasters • Be able to outline the methods and systems available to conduct risk assessment • Understand human failure; its causes and consequences • Understand the effects on behavior at work of experience, excellence, education and training • Understand organization and management factors contributing to human failures • Understand factors that may promote a positive health and safety culture

009 – (Management) – Developing a Crisis Management Strategy [ 5 Day]

This course is designed to show delegates how to create a crisis management procedure that is both workable and flexible. By its very nature, a 'crisis' is something that usually happens unexpectedly. Then it must be dealt with; often with limited, or inadequate, resources. Even companies that have crisis management procedures often find that when put to the real test, they are cumbersome and unworkable. This course uses case studies of different crises from the business and corporate world. It examines good and bad examples of crisis management and 'crisis mismanagement'. In any crisis management planning, the first thing to ask is "What possible crises could we face?". The second is, "What resources do we have, or need, to deal with each of these possible scenarios?". So how good is your organization at seeing potential crises and planning for them? This course will teach the core skills needed to put together a strategy that is both realistic and practical, and which has the best chance of success, when (not 'if') the unexpected happens. Every experience of a disaster has shown how normal people may have to rise to the tests of a crisis, which includes securing the reputation of their company / organization and getting out of difficult \situations. These people may have to handle the media and competition, aiming at knocking them down. The most important element of crisis management is to ensure that the continuity of the company / organization is maintained, and rises above the short-term challenges of the crisis.

Objectives

At the end of this training course, you will learn to:

• Delegates will learn the key skills of crisis management planning

• Delegates will be able to anticipate many of the issues and incidents that could go wrong with regards to the company / organization.

• They will learn how to identify the root causes of the problem and communicate facts in a clear and effective manner.

• They will have a clear understanding of the elements involved in good crisis management • They will leave with the tools and skills required to create a workable and realistic crisis management procedure in their

organization

people's welfare and wellbeing at work is taken care of. From helping to prevent work-related illness and stress

to understanding how motivation can impact on health, the work is varied and constantly developing. It allows

you not only to improve the quality of people's lives, but to do so in an area where, owing to the very nature of the employer-employee relationship, it can often be hard for individuals to put their health first.

The course will cover factors affecting health and safety at work; different approaches to occupational health;

hazards such as chemicals, plant, equipment, electricity, fire, explosive materials and biological hazards; health

and safety in high-risk industries, such as agriculture, construction and manufacturing; developing an

organisation's safety policy; accident reporting; legislation, policy and ethics; and preventing pollution. You'll also

study occupational psychology - how both the culture, psychology and management of a workplace, and

019 – (Safety Investigation) – Root Cause Analysis with Corrective Action [5 Day]

Root cause analysis involves searching backwards from an undesirable effect or outcome to identify its causes.

While "root cause" implies that there is a single cause responsible for a given problem, some effects actually

have multiple causes that trigger them. Sometimes the multiple effects are independent of each other; other times, causes are interrelated where, if one cause is removed, the problem can no longer occur.

We all know that it is important to contain problems as soon as they occur or are discovered. However, what we

generally see with problems are symptoms of the problem. The root cause is rarely apparent. While it is

important to initiate an interim containment plan as soon as a problem occurs, it is even more important to invest the time and energy to identify and address the root cause or causes of those problems they so that they are

less likely to occur in the future.

Root cause analysis with corrective action is about getting to the source of a problem and then correcting it for good.

Objectives

At the end of this training course, you will learn to:

• Learn how to establish an effective team environment for root cause analysis. • Clarify what the problem is and is not. • Beginning with that symptoms of the problem, map a trail from the symptom to the root cause(s). • Using data and investigative tools, identify the root cause.. • Implement measures to ensure the gains made are held. • Recognize common barriers to root cause analysis and apply techniques to overcome those barriers. • Generate ideas to solve the root cause problem and select the most appropriate solution using matrices.

026 – (Investigation) – Conducting Incident Investigations and Analyses Using the

Tripod Beta Methodology (5 Day)

Developed in the early 1990s, Tripod Beta is an incident investigation and analysis methodology designed in

line with the human behavior model. It was explicitly created to help accident investigators model incidents in a

way that allows them to understand the influencing environment and uncover the route organisational

deficiencies that allowed that incident to happen.

In the Tripod Beta methodology the investigation process goes hand-in-hand with the analysis process. From

the preliminary investigation report, possible Tripod Beta models of the incident are produced which leads to

further investigation and fact finding which in turn leads to a validation and refinement of the model. This

continues until all relevant facts have been identified and the ‘Tripod Beta tree’ accurately reflects the incident.

The result is a saving in time and effort, a deeper and more comprehensive analysis and a clearer

understanding of the failures that must be addressed in order to make significant and lasting improvements in

incident prevention.

Objectives

At the end of this training course, you will learn to / understand:

• Gain an excellent theoretical understanding of the Tripod Beta methodology • Understand how accidents occur and implement a more proactive approach in preventing accidents at

work • Assist with conducting structured, well-thought-out and deeper investigations with the established Tripod

Beta methodology • Recognise the cost of incidents and the value of investigating unwanted events • Act as a Tripod Beta facilitator during incident investigations as a team member.

028 – (Management Systems) – Training and Awareness of ISO 28000:2007

Supply Chain Security [5 Day]

As global trade expands, so do the opportunities for criminal elements to infiltrate global supply chains. Over the past ten years, as the legal and regulatory environments have evolved, organizations have started to address the need for heightened security within global supply chains. With regulations increasing, security threatened, and the need for the rapid exchange of information concerning the transport of goods from manufacturing through to the final point of sale, there has never been a better time than now to reinforce existing security systems or create new ones backed by effective risk and quality management principles.

What is ISO 28000:2007?

The ISO 28000:2007 standard specifies the requirements for a supply chain security management system, linking security management to many other aspects of business management. These aspects would include activities controlled or influenced by organizations that impact supply chain security, such as transportation of goods along the supply chain. ISO 28000 certification applies to all organizations that would like to implement a security management system and integrate their security management into their overall quality management system such as small companies or large multinationals in the manufacturing, service, storage, or transportation sector.

032 – (Safety) – Transportation of Dangerous Goods [5 Day]

The transportation or transporting of Dangerous Goods is a complicated process. It is often taken for granted in the overall “safety training” discussion. Think about it this way; you offer or send out a product that can pose a risk to the safety of drivers, flight crew, dock workers, rail workers, all handlers, receivers, and employees in general. The product is packaged incorrectly as per regulations. These regulations are developed worldwide by experts that study and test packaging for the safe movement of hazards. You do not package to the applicable standard due to the lack of proper training, understanding of regulations, or just negligence. The dangerous good now leaks or releases out of a vehicle, aircraft, vessel, or train. The importance of proper training is vital to human safety. Having the information is great. Truly knowing how to do the task can be life altering. Training in the proper handling of dangerous goods requires physically being able to classify, identify, package, document, label, and overall prepare a shipment for safe transport.

Objectives

Upon the successful completion of this safety training program, participants will understand:

• The legislative requirements (Government Regulations, CSA Standards and Manufacturers’ Guidelines and Principles);

• The duties and responsibilities of all workplace stakeholders; • The purpose, structure and functions of the TDG Clear Language legislation and regulations and what

043 – (Management System) – Transition to ISO 45001:2016 Occupational Health and

Safety management System (to replace OHSAS 18001 Regulation) [5 Day]

This standard is set to replace the popular OHSAS 18001 Regulations with the overall purpose remaining the improvement of occupational health and safety performance. ISO 45001 will more easily integrate with other ISO Management Systems standards including ISO 9001:2015 and ISO 14001:2015. ISO 45001 will require an organization to look beyond its immediate health and safety issues and take into account what the wider society expects of it. Organisations will have to think about their contractors and suppliers, as well as the effects their activities have on neighbouring communities. As globalisation and global trade continue to escalate, organisations’ stakeholders are expecting organisations to be ethical in every aspect of their business, especially in the way they treat employees. ISO 45001 will give organisations an internationally recognised occupational health and safety standard to follow. This standard provides the specification for formal, systematic analysis and management of risk, management of regulatory compliance, promotion of safer work practices, and evaluation of occupational health and safety performance. This systematic approach facilitates a decrease in the number of incidents and ultimately less disruption to business. In order to comply with international needs and requirements, more than 50 countries and organisations including the International Labour Organization (ILO) have been involved in the creation of ISO 45001. The aim is to provide a tool that can be used by any organisation, in any industry, anywhere in the world. Organisations currently certified to OHSAS 18001, can remain so through the transition period offered after the

publication of the ISO 45001 standard. Objectives Those who successfully complete this course should be able to understand the principles of • Why an ISO standard is being developed • The process and timescales (potentially published in 2016) • Three new concepts being introduced • The potential impact on organisations with OHSAS 18001 certification. • Recognize the differences between a program and a management system • Demonstrate leadership in the development and implementation of a health and safety/environmental management system • Understand the PDCA approach used in management system standards • Know the elements of a health and safety management system and an EMS and how to apply them • Identify the differences in elements of OHSAS 18001:2007 and the new ISO 45001 standard • Develop the necessary procedures, policies and other related documents required for OHSMS or EMS Implementation in line with the new standard

044 – (Management Systems) – Effective Application of ANZI – Z 10 (US Standard) for

Occupational Health, Safety and Environment Management [5 Day]

A rewarding and ever-developing field, occupational health, safety and environment involves ensuring that people's welfare and wellbeing at work is taken care of. From helping to prevent work-related illness and stress to understanding how motivation can impact on health, the work is varied and constantly developing. It allows you not only to improve the quality of people's lives, but to do so in an area where, owing to the very nature of the employer-employee relationship, it can often be hard for individuals to put their health first. ANSI/AIHA Z10-2005 is the voluntary consensus standard developed and followed in the United States. It has a primary focus on helping organizations minimize their risk of occupational injuries, illnesses and fatalities. Key characteristics that define Z10 include focus on management leadership roles, effective employee participation, design review and change. It provides a tool to help organizations establish and improve occupational health and safety performance. Z10 implementation focuses on assisting organizations in executing Occupational Health & Safety Management System strategies, helping organizations benchmark safety procedures and practices, and identifying areas where hazard prevention and control is needed. Implementation and execution of the standards’ core specifications will help companies identify areas in their management system where hazardous risk, lost time occurrences and safety weaknesses may lie.

045 – (Safety) – General Preventative Measures for Severe Radioactive Incidents

[5 Day]

Radioactivity is a natural phenomenon and natural sources of radiation are features of the environment. Radiation and radioactive substances have many beneficial applications, ranging from power generation to uses in medicine, industry and agriculture. The radiation risks to workers and the public and to the environment that may arise from these applications have to be assessed and, if necessary, controlled. Activities such as the medical uses of radiation, the operation of nuclear installations, the production, transport and use of radioactive material, and the management of radioactive waste must therefore be subject to standards of safety. Regulating safety is a national responsibility. However, radiation risks may transcend national borders, and international cooperation serves to promote and enhance safety globally by exchanging experience and by improving capabilities to control hazards, to prevent accidents, to respond to emergencies and to mitigate any harmful consequences. States have an obligation of diligence and duty of care, and are expected to fulfil their national and international undertakings and obligations. International safety standards provide support for States in meeting their obligations under general principles of international law, such as those relating to environmental protection. International safety standards also promote and assure confidence in safety and facilitate international commerce and trade. A global nuclear safety regime is in place and is being continuously improved. IAEA safety standards, which support the implementation of binding international instruments and national safety infrastructures, are a cornerstone of this global regime. The IAEA safety standards constitute a useful tool for contracting parties to assess their performance under these international convention

048 – (Leadership and Management) – PR, Communications and Crisis Management

[ 5 Day]

This course is designed to show delegates how to create a crisis management procedure that is both workable and flexible. By its very nature, a 'crisis' is something that usually happens unexpectedly. Then it has to be dealt with; often with limited, or inadequate, resources.

059 – (Management Systems) IMS Integrated Management Systems - Effective

Implementation and Auditing of ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 [ 5 Day]

What is an integrated management system? An integrated business management system focuses on competitive advantage, employing common processes to efficiently manage and optimize performance.

This five-day workshop focuses on the integration of the standards. The intent is not to teach the “shall’s” of each standard, but rather to understand how the requirements and clauses are integrated and their impact on audit systems and the auditing process. Other topics include audit systems, the auditing process and auditing instruments; the documentation process; conducting an audit; writing an audit report; and taking corrective action.

A growing body of information indicates that organizations integrates their Environmental Management System (EMS), Occupational Health & Safety Management System (OH&SMS) and Quality Management Systems (QMS) can realize significant benefits such as streamlined operations and decision-making, simplified documentation, more efficient use of resources, reduction in audit costs and greater cohesiveness. Internal audits are fundamental to all management systems as they are a means to establish status of conformity. This course advocates an integrated approach to minimize disruptions to operations, as well as a process risk and performance based approach that is especially helpful in identifying weak links between processes and opportunities for improvement.

060 – (Safety Audit) Performing Safety Audits and Site Inspections (5 Day)

“What you do not measure you cannot improve on”; every system however good on paper need to be checked if it

actually works in practice. How much more important is this need when what is at stake is not only money but human

lives?

There are two levels of checks. Level one being Workplace Inspections undertaken by supervisors and involve the

equipment and activities in the workplace looking both for unsafe conditions and unsafe acts. The supervisor in this

case must have sound knowledge of what is actually required.

Level two is the Audit where the weaknesses of a system are

identified and plans put in place to correct them. An Audit may

also identify areas that although working can be improved. The

competent Auditor critically examines the Safety Management

System and identify weakness; where improvements may be

necessary and also changes required for compliance with legal

requirements through a systematic, organized, thorough,

assessment of how well, efficient and effective the systems are

operating.

Workplace Inspections are undertaken by supervisors and involve the equipment and activities on a workplace looking both for unsafe conditions and unsafe acts. In both these activities, the personnel undertaking these tasks have to have sound knowledge of what is actually required and a sound basis on the legal aspects.

Most organizations now have implemented an HSE Management System. An essential part of any HSE-MS is to provide some means of measuring performance and to provide feedback for management review. The HSE Audit and site inspections are essential elements in providing this function. Auditors, whether experiences or new need to have the necessary experience in HSE to conduct an effective audit. This course will help the delegates to prepare and conduct effective company and contractors HSE audits, enhance their background for relevant HSE issues. They will also gain necessary skills in carrying out physical site inspections and prepare HSE audit reports

064 – (Environment) Conducting an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) – (5 Day)

Economic, social and environmental change is inherent to development. Whilst development aims to bring about positive change it can lead to conflicts. In the past, the promotion of economic growth as the motor for increased wellbeing was the main development thrust with little sensitivity to adverse social or environmental impacts. The need to avoid adverse impacts and to ensure long term benefits led to the concept of sustainability. This has become accepted as an essential feature of development if the aim of increased wellbeing and greater equity in fulfilling basic needs to be met for this and future generations. In order to predict environmental impacts of any development activity and to provide an opportunity to mitigate negative impacts and enhance positive impacts, the environmental impact assessment (EIA) procedure was developed in the 1970s.This course aims to assist staff from different disciplines and backgrounds (government officials, consultants and planners) to incorporate environmental considerations into planning, designing, implementing and regulating programs, plans and projects: thus leading to sustainable development.

066 – (Maritime Security) Understanding and Implementation of the ISPS Code

(International Ship and Port Facility Security) – (5 Day)

The International Ship and Port Facility Security Code (ISPS Code) is a comprehensive set of measures to enhance the security of ships and port facilities, developed in response to the perceived threats to ships and port facilities in the wake of the 9/11 attacks in the United States. The ISPS Code is implemented through chapter XI-2 Special measures to enhance maritime security in the International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea (SOLAS), 1974. The Code has two parts, one mandatory and one recommendatory.

In essence, the Code takes the approach that ensuring the security of ships and port facilities is a risk management activity and that, to determine what security measures are appropriate, an assessment of the risks must be made in each particular case. The purpose of the Code is to provide a standardized, consistent framework for evaluating risk, enabling Governments to offset changes in threat with changes in vulnerability for ships and port facilities through determination of appropriate security levels and corresponding security measures.
