About Advice NI:Advice NI is a charitable company limited by guarantee. We support 68 members within the independent advice sector who provide information, advice and advocacy services on a range of issues including benefits, housing, employment and education. Our vision is of ‘a society of confident, informed and active citizens who can access their rights and entitlements.’ To this end we strive to ‘provide leadership and services to our members and ensure accessible advice services across NI.’

Our services include advice provision on debt, social security and HMRC products.

About Advice NI Training:Advice NI develops and delivers high quality, award winning, training programmes to equip the independent legal advice sector with the knowledge and skills required to deliver confident, competent advice. Our recent training awards include a prestigious Regional Training Award and AONTAS Star Award won in 2011, and our Advocacy Training was shortlisted for a 2014 Star Award.

Our training is targeted, in the main, to those working in the legal advice/advice and guidance sector and is offered via face to face and e-learning platforms. We provide accredited and non-accredited training with all of our qualifications mapped to the National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Legal Advisers and Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF). We are the leading provider of nationally accredited advice and guidance qualifications in Northern Ireland.

Our training is dynamic, and informed by our annual training needs analysis, ensuring it is current, responds to the needs of advisors and in turn the public. We have a pool of highly qualified tutors and assessors and work in partnership on our training with various organisations including the Money Advice Trust (MAT), Law Centre NI, Alzheimer’s Society, Disability Action, Citizens Advice and Age NI.

This brochure provides details of face to face and e-learning training available from Advice NI between January and June 2015. Our E-learning courses are identified by the symbol below in our brochure and delivered through our e-learning website www.adviceni-learningonline.net.

Framework & Accreditation:Advice NI is an approved Assessment Centre with City and Guilds, ProQual and Open College Network Northern Ireland. We offer accredited courses and qualifications from Level 1 to Level 5. We provide both regulated and non-regulated accredited courses grounding them in an educational and professional framework. This includes a range of QCF qualifications recognised in England, Wales and Northern Ireland and linked to various NOS. Accredited courses are identified in the brochure by the following accreditation symbol.

Advice NI courses can be used as evidence for our NVQ’s in Advice and Guidance (Levels 3 or 4) and our Legal Advice Qualifications (currently Levels 2 or 3), for example, ‘Review Own Contribution to the Service’ (Unit 15) and ‘Evaluate and Develop Own Contribution to the Service’ (Unit 16). They can help you to meet the assessment criteria to achieve the vocational qualifications.

Advice NI courses can be used to meet Continued Professional Development (CPD) requirements for Advisers, Solicitors and Barristers. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance for all Advice NI training courses attended, and an official certificate from the awarding body for any accredited courses completed which can be used as evidence of CPD.

There are no entry requirements for the majority of Advice NI courses unless specified. However, for our vocational qualifications (e.g. NVQ, Legal Advice and Advocacy qualifications) participants must meet the relevant sector and task requirements. A

ProgressionThere are different progression routes for learners, for example to higher level qualifications and/or to qualifications on the QCF. Our courses also enable progression to courses offered by other learning providers such as Law Centre NI programmes (www.lawcentreni.org).

LocationAdvice NI face to face courses are delivered at our offices in Belfast, 1 Rushfield Avenue, Belfast, BT73FP. Our training venue has access for those with disabilities.

Bespoke TrainingAdvice NI can respond to requests for in-house training and/or workshops at a time convenient to you. We can also develop alternative training packages to suit your organisational needs. For information about bespoke training courses see page 52 and/or contact [email protected].

FeesDetails of course fees can be found in this programme. Payment should be made as per invoice terms.

Booking and Application Policy: In order to ensure that the course you book is the right one for you please read the course details carefully. To register on any of the courses (except wiseradviser courses – see page 7) please complete and return the booking form at the back of this brochure stating clearly which course you are applying for. If you are interested in one of our training courses but unable to attend you can complete and return the expression of interest form to receive future notifications about the course. Word versions of these forms can be downloaded from our website www.adviceni.net.

Applications are taken on a ‘first come, first served’ basis. As the courses are popular we advise you to apply as quickly as possible. If the course is full when we receive your application you will be placed on a reserve list and contacted if a place becomes available. Places are limited to 16 per session to ensure the best learning environment.

Confirmation Policy: You will receive confirmation of a booking via e-mail. Please ensure the e-mail address you provide on the booking form is the e-mail address you wish the confirmation to be sent to. For wiseradviser training please ensure the email address provided on the wiseradviser website is correct (Note: you must register on the wiseradviser site to be able to book a place on the course).

Cancellation and Non-Attendance Policy: Places on each course are limited. Therefore, to deter late cancellation and non-attendance without notification it is our policy to issue invoices automatically at the rate of £35 per place, where cancellations (that cannot be filled from a reserve list) are notified less than five working days before the course without good reason and in all cases of non-attendance without notification. To avoid this charge, please cancel your place at least five days in advance. If this is not possible due to last minute circumstances please telephone us on 028 90 645 919. We reserve the right to cancel courses if they cannot be run for any reason and we will notify you accordingly.

NVQ in Advice and Guidance:Advice NI offers this qualification at Level 3 (Certificate) and Level 4 (Diploma).

Who are these qualifications for?The Advice and Guidance qualifications are suitable for anyone working or volunteering with clients in an advice and guidance setting. This could be for example, in the area of welfare rights, careers, or employability.

Level 3 (Certificate) This level is for workers whose role involves providing advice and guidance directly to clients, reporting to line management as well as associated services. The candidate may also supervise and support other staff members.

Level 4 (Diploma) This level is for workers whose role involves providing specialist advice and guidance to clients, reporting to senior management and networking with associated services.

Fees: The fees for the NVQ in Advice and Guidance are as follows:

Level 3 Certificate in Advice and Guidance(Ref: AG3)

A minimum of 21 credits must be achieved.

Mandatory units include:

• Establish communication with clients for advice and guidance

• Assist advice and guidance clients to decide on a course of action

PLUS A minimum of 9 credits from within the optional group of units.

Level 4 Diploma in Advice and Guidance (Ref: AG4)

A minimum of 37 credits must be achieved.

• Stage and manage the mediation process

• Provide support for other practitioners

Learners must achieve the 10 credits Mandatory Group.

This was a very worthwhile experience because the qualification related directly to my everyday job. It was an excellent opportunity for self-assessment on my provision and as a

About Our Qualifications:Advice NI vocational courses are nationally recognised competence based qualifications designed to develop and assess skills and knowledge directly related to a person’s ability to do a job. They are practice based, rather than examination based, which makes them suitable to take whilst in work.

A key part of these courses will be the learner demonstrating that they are competent in the workplace by proving that they can do certain work-related tasks. Assessment is through portfolio, where candidates build up evidence of the work they have done, for example, work products, exercises and assignments and by observation, where an assessor watches them work and checks they can do the work-related task.

These qualifications are linked to the Qualifications and Credit Framework (QCF) ensuring that they are regulated and recognised across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. Having a Nationally Recognised Qualification on your CV is a great way to prove that you have the work-related skills you need for the job.

Advice NI Vocational Qualifications:Advice NI offers Nationally Recognised Vocational Qualifications in Advice and Guidance, Legal Advice, Independent Advocacy, Customer Service and Business Administration, which are accredited through City and Guilds and ProQual. Advice NI provides a flexible learning package to learners through our online learning programme and face to face assessments. Learners can enrol on these qualifications at any time as we operate a roll-on-roll-off programme except for our qualifications in Independent Advocacy (contact [email protected] for more details). There are no entry requirements for these vocational qualifications, but learners MUST be working in a sector relevant to the qualification they wish to pursue, and be performing tasks relevant to the level of the qualification.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but candidates must be working in a role relevant to the qualification.

Who are these qualifications for?This qualification is for those who are likely to be the first point of contact for clients within a legal / business / advice environment. It is designed for those whose role involves meeting and greeting clients, ascertaining their needs and determining the best course of action, such as information, signposting or referral. It is appropriate for those working in the legal advice field, for example, independent advice offices, in local authorities, solicitor offices, police front offices or trade unions.

Qualification Title: Level 3 Award in Providing Initial Legal Advice Level 3 Certificate in Providing Initial Legal Advice and Information

About the qualification:These are competence-based qualifications and meet the requirements under the Qualification and Credit framework (QCF). The Level 3 Award in Providing Initial Legal Advice is worth a minimum of 12 Credits and the Level 3 Certificate in Providing Initial legal Information and Advice is worth a minimum of 29 Credits.

To achieve these qualifications learners will be assessed, by an Assessor, to ensure they have the necessary competences, knowledge and work–related skills to meet the relevant occupational standards. Learners must provide a range of evidence to demonstrate how they meet the Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria for each unit. Learners can do this by building a portfolio of evidence of the work they have done, i.e. work related products, personal statements, questioning and observational assessments.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but candidates must be working in a role relevant to the qualification.

Who are these qualifications for?These qualifications are suitable for advisers working directly with clients providing advice and/or guidance in the legal/ business environment. They are aimed at first line advisers who explore a client’s needs, provide appropriate advice and information, and research more in-depth information for cases. They are suitable for those who may prepare cases for court or tribunal but would be unlikely to present cases. They are appropriate for those working in the independent advice sector, for example, legal advisers, debt counsellors, housing officers, pension advisers, police front office staff, social workers, solicitor office staff and safety officers.

Level 2 Certificate in Supporting Legal Advice Provision(17 Credits)

A minimum of 17 credits must be achieved.

Mandatory units include:

• Communicating with legal advice clients

• Supporting clients to make use of advice and guidance services

• Evaluating own practice in the legal context

14 credits must be achieved by completing all mandatory units.

• Supporting legal advice clients to plan, implement and review action

• Providing legal advice to clients

• Managing interviews with legal advice clients

• Using electronic means to research legal information and advice

• Evaluating own practice in a legal advice context

19 credits must be achieved by completing all of the mandatory units.

PLUS a further 10 credits must be achieved by completing at least 2 units from Optional Group A and 1 unit from Optional Group B.

Learners must provide a range of evidence to demonstrate how they meet the Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria for each unit. Learners can do this by building a portfolio of evidence of the work they have done, i.e. work related products, personal statements, questioning and observational assessments.

There are no formal entry requirements for this qualification but candidates must be working in a role relevant to the qualification.

Who are these qualifications for?These qualifications are suitable for specialist advisers working in the legal advice field who are experienced practitioners in the advice sector and have specialist knowledge of at least one area of legal advice (e.g. welfare rights, money and debt, housing, health and community care, disability, family, mental health or discrimination law). They are suitable for those who may also be involved in the preparation and presentation of cases for court.

Level/Reference Credits Requirements Mandatory Units

Level 4 Certificate in Providing Specialist Legal Advice (20 Credits)

A minimum of 20 credits must be achieved.

Mandatory units include:

• Managing legal advice cases

• Providing legal advice to clients10 credits must be achieved by completing all mandatory units.

PLUS a further 3 credits must be achieved by completing at least 1 unit from Optional Group 1 and at least 1 unit form Optional Group 2.

Level 4 Diploma in Providing Specialist Legal Advice and Casework(38 Credits)

A minimum of 38 credits must be achieved.

Mandatory units include:

• Managing legal advice cases

• Providing legal advice to clients

• Managing personal caseload

• Evaluating own practice in a legal advice context

20 credits must be achieved by completing all of the mandatory units.

PLUS a further 18 credits must be achieved by competing at least 1 unit from Optional Group 1 and at least 1 unit from Optional Group 2.

Certificate or Diplomain Customer ServiceCompetence based qualifications for those providing customer service

Certificate or Diploma in Customer Service:Advice NI offers this qualification at Level 1 (Certificate), Level 2 (Diploma), and Level 3 (Diploma).

Who are these qualifications for?The Customer Service qualifications are suitable for anyone working in a customer-facing role.

Level 1 (Certificate) This level is for people who are new to customer service, and wish to gain basic knowledge, understanding and experience of dealing with customers. (ProQual Only)

Level 2 (Diploma) This level is for Learners who work in the Customer Service sector and other related sectors (e.g. Contact Centres, Sales, Social media, Team Leading, Administration, Retail and other Technical sectors). Learners should have some experience in customer service and be able to handle more difficult customers. This qualification allows Learners to improve their skills and become more involved in making improvements to their team’s level of customer service.

Level 3 (Diploma) This level is for Learners with experience in customer service and have an understanding of customer service as a competitive tool and are proactive in finding solutions both within and externally to their organisation. Learners will have significant responsibility for the delivery of both internal and external customer service within their team or organisation. Learners will demonstrate their ability to analyse and respond to customers on a strategic level, suggesting improvements and leading in their implementation, using software solutions as appropriate.

Level/Reference Credits Requirements Mandatory Units

Level 1 Certificate in Customer Service(Ref: CS1)

Minimum Credit Value: 23 Mandatory units include:

• Understand working in a customer service environment

• Work with others in a business environment

The learner must achieve the 14 credits from the Mandatory Group A.

PLUS a minimum of a further 11 credits must be achieved by completing the Optional Units as follows:A Minimum of 6 credits from Optional Group B.A Maximum of 3 credits can come from Optional Group C.

Level 2 Diploma in Customer Service (Ref: CS2)

Minimum Credit Value: 45 Mandatory units include:

• Communicate using customer service language

• Follow the rules to deliver customer service

The learner must achieve the 19 credits from the Mandatory Group A.

Debt and Money Advice TrainingAward winning training and support for Money Advisers

About Wiseradviser:Wiseradviser is part of a UK wide money advice training programme provided by the Money Advice Trust (MAT). It is of benefit to anyone working with people facing financial difficulty. In Northern Ireland Advice NI and other MAT partners deliver Wiseradviser training at generalist, skilled and specialist level. Advice NI has received a National Training Award for its provision of Wiseradviser training.

Accreditation: The Level 3 Certificate is accredited by City and Guilds. Level/Accreditation: There are three levels to Wiseradviser training: Generalist Level (G) (provides basic principles of money advice); Skilled Level (S) (develops skills and knowledge of generalist money advisers), and Specialist Level (SP) (to help advisers deal with more complex cases). A number of the Wiseradviser courses are accredited with OCNNI at Level 2 or 3. See individual courses for further details. We have submitted an application to the Money Advice Service (MAS). This will enable Wiseradviser training, in Northern Ireland, to provide advisers with a training route which meets the requirements of the MAS quality framework for individuals.

Location/Time: Wiseradviser training courses are currently delivered in at Advice NI offices in Belfast. Half day courses run from 9.30am to 1pm. Full day courses run from 9.30am to 4.00pm (approximately).

Who Should Attend?Wiseradviser courses are appropriate to anyone currently working with vulnerable clients facing financial difficulties.

Booking Policy: All attendees MUST book their place online at www.wiseradviser.org and NOT using the Advice NI booking form. A notification e-mail will be sent once a booking request is received. Successful applicants will receive a confirmation e-mail advising them of their course place. Where possible reminder e-mails will be sent 2 months and again 2 weeks prior to the course. Should a place no longer be required it MUST be cancelled via the wiseradviser website (see cancellation policy on page 2).

To book a place on a Wiseradviser course participants must be registered on the Wiseradviser website atwww.wiseradviser.org. Furthermore there is a maximum limit of 2 places (per course) per agency/branch. Therefore, some applicants will be placed on a reserve list and contacted if places become available.

This includes ‘Negotiate on Behalf of Clients (Unit 11), ‘Support Clients to Make Use of Advice and Guidance Services’ (Unit 2), and ‘Present Cases for Clients in Formal Proceedings’. They are also linked to a range of National Occupational Standards (NOS) for Legal Advisers including:

The Welfare Reform Training Programme

A package of new and dynamic training courses to future proof your knowledge of the Social Security system and prepare for welfare reform

About the Course:The Welfare Reform Act received Royal Assent at Westminster on the 8th of March 2012 and introduced significant reforms to the Social Security Benefit System including:

• A new benefit called Universal Credit to replace the current means tested benefit and tax credit system and introducing a cap on the maximum amount payable.

• The abolition of the discretionary social fund in favour of locally based schemes to address exceptional hardship.

• The abolition of Disability Living Allowance for working age people in favour of a new benefit known as a Personal Independence Payment.

• Reforming Child Maintenance Services to move to a point where parents are supported to make their own arrangements for child maintenance where possible and charging for the scheme under certain circumstances.

In order to assist advisers to achieve a full working knowledge of the new system we have devised a package of three courses, of which learners can select individual courses or all three as a package. Learners who have previously completed the “Overview of Welfare Benefits” course will also be able to avail of the package for the two remaining courses.

By 2050, 45% of Northern Ireland’s population is expected to be over 50 years of age. We are getting older as a society and there has never been a better time to start considering how we can all improve our age awareness to better serve the needs of a growing client base or even to consider the importance of age awareness and a more positive stance on aging for our own staff.

Over the past 7 years we have been delivering our very popular two day “Age Awareness and Working with Older People” course and have passed on our Age Issues expertise to organisations like The Equality Commission, Engage with Age and The Commissioner for Older People Northern Ireland.

To reflect the changing needs of organisations seeking to improve their service delivery to older people we are now offering two half day workshops in Age Awareness. Our case recording training is based on the Advice Pro case-management system and meets the requirements for using Advice Pro as per the system’s licence agreement.The objective of our Advice Pro training is to ensure that advisers fully understand the features and functionality that this online system has to offer. Safer Lone Working for Frontline Staff A practical, straight forward session to help keep you safe and well at work

Title/Reference: Safer Lone Working for Frontline Staff (Ref: SLWFS/FEB/15)

About the Course: Offering help to people in a work situation, often in difficult circumstances, doesn’t have to mean taking risks. Feeling safe and well doesn’t just extend to face-to-face work with clients, it includes telephone interactions with client as well.

This practical, interactive and engaging workshop style training is designed to equip participants with thought provoking awareness raising tools and processes to improve their personal safety on the job either on or off site. Who Should Attend? The course is designed for anyone working directly in a client facing role and whose job role often requires that they work alone, visit clients, or deal with clients on the telephone.

Location/Time/Date: The course will run on the 25th of February 2015. It will be delivered at Advice NI offices in Belfast. The course runs from 9.30am to 1.00pm.

Fees: There is a charge of £30 to Advice NI Members, £45 to Voluntary and Community Sector organisations and £65 to Private and Statutory Sector organisations.

CPD Hours: There are 3 CPD hours available for this course.

Educational/Professional Framework:This course can be used as evidence towards a range of units in our Advice and Guidance NVQ’s and Legal Advice qualifications including ‘Develop and Manage Interviews with Clients’. About the Course: Employers have a legal duty of care to do as much as possible to keep their staff safe. Employees, who are well trained in how to detect, react to and report potential risks and acts of aggression or violence are better equipped to make safer, more rational choices in the face of aggression and violence at work and can manage the aftermath of such incidents and report on them more effectively.

Our full day training course aims to raise your organisational awareness in best practice for lone working and will enable you to develop the skill set to formulate best practice polices in lone working and personal safety for dissemination to your staff or review your existing policies. The course will include the provision of best practice template materials for your organisations use including a 75 page lone working manual. Who Should Attend? The course is designed for managers and supervisors of staff who work with clients and the general public or others within the organisation involved in policy development or lone working issues.

Location/Time/Date: The course will run on the 27th of April 2015. It will be delivered at Advice NI offices in Belfast. The course runs from 9.30am to 4.30pm approximately.

TAQA Qualifications Essential qualifications for those in training who are required to carry outassessment and quality assurance

About TAQA Qualifications:The TAQA qualifications (Training, Assessment, & Quality Assurance) replace the A1 & A2 Assessor Awards and the V1 & V2 Verifier Awards. They are for anyone working in or hoping to take up a role in assessment and internal quality assurance, and provide people in these roles with the opportunity to develop and improve their practice as well as achieving a professional qualification for their roles. The qualifications are linked to the Qualification and Credits Framework (QCF) and are designed for use in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

The TAQA qualifications offer Awards and Certificates at Level 3 and 4. Level 3 provides a pathway for learners to understand assessment and if required, qualify as an assessor. Level 4 focuses on internal quality assurance. Some of the awards concentrate on competence based skills, such as assessing competence in the workplace, while others are knowledge based, such as understanding quality assurance and assessment processes. Therefore, these awards can suit practitioners or anyone wishing to acquire knowledge and information about the roles of the assessor or internal quality assurer.

Advice NI TAQA Qualifications:Advice NI offers a range of TAQA qualifications including those for assessors and internal quality assurance staff.
