With unemployment in Hertfordshire and Bedfordshire remaining high and the road to economic recovery long and slow, North Hertfordshire College has put together a range of programmes and support that will help you to get back into work quickly.
These programmes are offered throughout the year and have been designed with local employment needs in mind. They offer a combination of training and support that include vocational skills, employability skills and mentoring from qualified and experienced Employment Advisers.
You will be able to access our job matching service which provides links to traineeships, apprenticeships and local employment opportunities. You will have access to guaranteed interviews with employers who are recruiting or are providing work placements. And will receive on-going feedback and support to aid you with your
job search. This combination has a proven track record of success and we look forward to welcoming you on to one of our programmes.

ACCOUNTING AND BOOKKEEPING
AAT Level 2 Award in Computerised Accounts This course helps the learner to create accounts, process information, correct errors and produce management reports using Sage computerised account packages.
Entry requirements: An understanding of manual accounts (double entry), together with a sound educational background in maths, English and keyboard skills.

Topics include the entrepreneurial mind-set, market research and the importance of cash flow. It’s ideal if you’re starting a new business venture or you just want to know more about the process.

English and maths are essential for everyday living and to help you to thrive in today’s workplace. These short courses will assess your current skills level, brush up those skills you may have forgotten and get you started towards gaining a maths or English qualification

Customer Service in Retail and Hospitality – Level 1This programme is useful for anyone wishing to work in a customer facing environment. The qualification includes developing methods to engage customers, meeting customer needs through knowledge of products or services, selling, service and exceeding customer expectations.
ProgressionGaining regular experience of contact with customers will increase your skills further. Find out how we can support you to gain experience through a customer facing work placement that will enhance your skills further.
Customers interested in working in hospitality may also be interested in the Hospitality Programme incorporating Food Safety and Barista training.

HEALTH AND SOCIAL CARE
An Introduction to Working in the Care Sector - Level 1This course looks at the role of the care worker and the principles of working in care. You will develop an understanding of the responsibilities for caring for vulnerable adults in the care environment; equality and diversity, safeguarding, first aid and manual handling. You will also look at personal career progression to support you into a role within the sector.

ProgressionAt the end of the course your Employment Adviser will link you into local care organisations who are currently recruiting.
It is advisable to also undertake a First Aid qualification and a Health and Safety qualification (lifting people).

First AidFirst Aid is one of the most practical life skills an individual can learn. It is vital for the home, and workplace to provide a safe environment for family friends and colleagues.

I T AND COMPUTER TRAIN ING
Essential Computer SkillsIf you have little or no experience of using a computer our Get Ahead in IT (Entry 3) course will guide you through computer basics and as well as looking at software such as word processing, the internet and email. You will need to complete two mandatory units and gain four credits. At the end of the course you will have achieved a City and Guilds Entry Level 3 Award for IT Users qualification which will allow you to progress to level 1 if you wish to.
Duration:10 weeks- 1 day per week
Improvers Computer SkillsIf you are able to use a computer and everyday software such as email, but wish to develop your skills further our Get Ahead in IT (Level 1) course will help you do this. You will need to complete a mandatory unit and gain nine credits after which you will achieve a City and Guilds Level 1 Award for IT Users qualification.

REACH FOR SUCCESS
This programme is designed to support adults and young people with disabilities and long term health issues plan their return to work. In particular, this programme will benefit those experiencing changes in their circumstances and who are now actively seeking employment
The programme is designed to build confidence, stamina and awareness of local opportunities and help to plan a route back into employment. The initial phase is a core element offered 1 day a week for 6 weeks that covers three core aspects:
1. What opportunities are available and will they be right for me?
Information and awareness of a range of local opportunities that include training, volunteering, employment and setting up your own business
2. Developingyourpersonalcareer and employment planWorking with your personal employment adviser you will be supported to discover and develop your skills and abilities, determine your personal goals and aspirations and identify techniques and support that will help to minimise constraints any barriers you may face

1. Kickstart your Business Focusing on generating and assessing your business idea you can consider options such as market trading and on line businesses. You can also access loans via ‘Launcher’ which provide loans that will help you to ‘get off benefits and into business’.
2. Kick start your Apprenticeship

Traineeships offer a route to employment. You will undertake work experience that is usually around 8 weeks and is with an employer that is considering taking on an apprentice or a new employee. These bespoke programmes are designed with the employer and alongside the placement include maths and English qualifications, employment skills and essential components of vocational training.
At the end of the work experience, you will be guaranteed an interview and reference from your work employer and it is hope that this will aid your progression into employment or into an apprenticeship
