    Begin: Cement and concrete are so common on a construction site that you probably dontthink much about them. Theyre just part of the job. B ut did you know tha t cement an dconcrete dust can cause lung dama ge? Did you know tha t you can get a n a l lergic react ionfrom skin conta ct wit h cement? Without protection, cement a nd concrete ca n be bad news .

    1. Whats in cement that can be harmful? Different cements ha ve different ingredients. Many of them conta in substa nces that

    can be hazardous, like silica, lime, gypsum, nickel, cobalt, and chromium compounds.

    2. What illnesses can you get if you breathe too much cement dust? Chronic bronchitis. Silicosis from the crysta l l ine si l ica (qua rtz) used in ma ny cements. Cancer from the small amounts of chromium compounds found in some cements.

    Explain : Most of the safety measures we ve ta lked a bout ar e required by Ca l/OSH A. Wehave to take these precautions it s the law . For example , Cal /OSHA says w e must ma kesure no one on the si te is exposed to more tha n 10 milligrams of cement dust per cubicmeter of a ir, avera ged over an 8-hour shift . This is called th e permissible exposure limit(P EL) for cement dust . Bu t there are lower l imi ts i f the dust i s very f ine and easy tobreathe deep into the lungs. The l imit is a lso lower if the dust conta ins toxic substances l ikechromium. I ha ve a C hecklist of the Ca l/OSH A regulat ions on cement a nd concrete.
