    STEP1Decidewhattrainingyourorganisationneeds Identifytheskillsandknowledgeneededforpeopletodotheirjobina

    safeandhealthyway.Comparetheseagainstpeoplescurrentskillsandknowledge

    and

    identify

    the

    gaps.

    Reviewyourexperienceofinjuries,nearmissesorcasesofillhealth. Lookatyourriskassessmentstoseewhereinformationand/ortraining

    havebeenidentifiedasfactorsincontrollingrisks. Consultemployeesortheirrepresentativesfortheirviews. Considerawarenesstrainingneedsfordirectors,managersand

    supervisors,including:- howyoumanagehealthandsafety;- whoisresponsibleforwhat;- thecosttothebusinessifthingsgowrong;- howtoidentifyhazardsandevaluaterisks;and- thehazardsencounteredandmeasuresforcontrollingthem.

    STEP2Decideyourtrainingpriorities Doesthelawrequireyoutocarryoutspecifictraining(egfirst-aid

    training)?SeeTheLawformoredetails. Topprioritieswouldincludethosewherelackofinformationand/ortraining

    mightresultinseriousharm,andthosewhichbenefitthelargestnumbersofstaff.

    Consultemployeesortheirrepresentativesfortheirviews. Trainingfornewrecruitsandforpeoplechangingjobsortakingonnew

    responsibilitiesshouldalwaysbeapriority.

    STEP3ChooseyourtrainingmethodsandresourcesDontforgetthatthoughtherearemanyexternaltrainerswhocanhelpyou,mucheffectivetrainingcanbedoneinhouse. Chooseyourmethods,forexample:

    - givinginformationorinstruction;- coachingoron-the-jobtraining;- trainingintheclassroom;- openanddistancelearning;- ingroupsorindividually;and- computer-basedorinteractivelearning.
