What Is CorelDRAW 10?CorelDRAW 10 is a graphics program that allows you tocreate illustrations containing text, graphics, and electronicphotographs. CorelDRAW can’t really be defined as onepiece of software due to the numerous software that isincluded in the CorelDRAW box.

In addition to CorelDRAW, the version 10 Graphics Suitealso includes the following applications:

q Corel PHOTO-PAINT: Retouches and edits photos.

q Corel R.A.V.E.: Vector-based animations exportableto Flash SWF, GIF, MOV, and AVI formats.

q Corel TRACE: Converts bitmap images to vectorgraphics.

q Corel CAPTURE: Captures application screens foruse in hardcopy and online documentation.

q Canto Cumulus Desktop: Manages any type of digitalmedia into catalogs and categories.

q Bitstream Font Navigator: Manages fonts installedon your computer.

� Note: This manual is designed for at least two full daysof training. It is strongly recommended that youcomplete the Self-Check Assessments after theappropriate sections have been covered.

ConventionsThe best possible real business cases are incorporated asexercises whenever possible. In some cases self-explorationis encouraged in the exercises. The steps to follow are listedon the left side. Any comments about what you are doing orseeing is listed on the right side. How to Install the Exercise FilesThis training manual is to be used in conjunction with thesupplied exercise disk. Before you continue with thismanual, you must first extract the exercise files from thediskette and copy them to the following folder location:

C:\Corel\Learn

You will need to access this folder when opening and savingthe exercise files used in this manual.

Exercise: Installing the Exercise Files

Steps to Follow Comments

1. Insert the exercise disk at the backof this manual into the A: drive.

2. Click on the Start button in theWindows Taskbar.

Click on Run. The Run dialog box appears.

3. Click the Browse button andnavigate to the 3 ½ Floppy (A:) drive.

4. Double-click exercd10 in the filelist.

5. Click OK in the Run dialog box. To run the extraction program.

6. Click Next>> followed by Finish inthe Installer Program.

Click Yes to the CreateC:\Corel\Learn directory? prompt.

The files are extracted to the\Corel\Learn folder on your C: drive.

7. Click OK to the Extractioncompleted prompt, eject the exercisedisk and place back in the envelope.

Exercise: Starting CorelDRAWCorelDRAW 10 requires Windows to be installed on yourcomputer. If not started already, run Windows. Then,follow the steps below.

Menu BarThe Menu Bar contains eleven (File, Edit, View, Layout,Arrange, Effects, Bitmaps, Text, Tools, Window, Help)commands each of which contains commands listed in amenu. Click on the command to display the menu. To hideany menu, click any blank area outside the menu.

Standard ToolbarThe Standard toolbar is located under the Menu Bar andcontains the following buttons:

To find out what each button is called, point to any buttonin the Standard toolbar. A Tooltip balloon will appearidentifying the button.

To hide the toolbar, point to the toolbar, right-click anduncheck Standard.

Property BarThe Property Bar, located beneath the Standard toolbar, is acontext-sensitive toolbar that changes according to the tooland object that is currently selected. It provides mostfeatures you will need for modifying the object.

RulersHorizontal and vertical rulers can be turned on and off byselecting View, Rulers. The rulers can be setup by selectingTools, Options, Document, Rulers.

Scroll BarsTwo scroll bars, vertical and horizontal, are used to scrollthe page up/down or left/right respectively.

ToolboxLocated on the left side of the screen is the CorelDRAWtoolbox. Several of the tools are grouped indicated by thesmall triangle at the bottom right corner. Tools aredisplayed in a flyout menu. To find out what each tool iscalled, point to any tool in the toolbox. After a few secondsa Tooltip balloon appears identifying the tool.

Drawing WindowYou can draw objects on the drawing window. Any objectson the drawing window will be printed, provided the pagesetup is supported by your printer.

Desktop AreaAny objects appearing on the desktop area are not printedbut can be used as a temporary storage area.

Color PaletteDifferent color palettes may be used including PantoneMatching System (PMS), Pantone Process, Web-safe Colors,TRUMATCH, and Default palette. Select Window, ColorPalettes to choose the desired palette. Or choose None toturn the palette off.

Status BarProvides information on the currently selected object oraction.

Getting AssistanceThere are several assistance facilities built into CorelDRAWthat help to learn a new task easier. You can use on-linehelp, the What's This? button, the Hints feature, or run theTutor wizard.

Using On-Line HelpThe online Help system enables you to retrieve all theinformation you need quickly, and then return to yourwork. Help appears in a separate window on your screen.You can also print specific topics from the online Helpsystem.

To use the help system, select Help from the Menu Bar andchoose the desired help option (e.g., Help Topics).Alternatively, while displaying a dialog box you can pressthe [F1] key for context-sensitive help on the field that iscurrently chosen.

Using the What’s This? ButtonClick on the What's This? Help button in the Standardtoolbar, point and click on the desired tool, menucommand, or button. Or, right-click the field and selectWhat’s This?. Context-sensitive help information appearsabout what you clicked on.

Running CorelTUTORThe CorelDRAW Tutor feature is designed to providestep-by-step instructions on how to complete a specifictask. You have the choice of reading the information orfollowing along with Tutor instructions.

To activate CorelTUTOR, select Help, CorelTUTOR.CorelTUTOR opens up in your web browser. You have thechoice of running a local tutor installed on your hard driveor download a tutor from the www.corel.com web site.

2. Click on the Index tab. Located at the top.

3. Type toolbox.

Click the Display button. The Exploring the Toolboxinformation is displayed.

4. Click on any green text to activatepop-up help.

Located at the top.

5. Click the X in the top right corner ofthe Help window.

To close the Help window.

6. Click on the What’s This? Helpbutton in the Standard toolbar.

File Management

Open Versus ImportYou can open CorelDRAW CDR documents as well aspopular graphic formats by clicking the Open button in theStandard Toolbar or by selecting File, Open. However, youcan also import certain file formats and combine withobjects that currently reside in the drawing. Typically, youwould choose to import in cases when you want to add agraphic or clipart image to the existing artwork.

Creating a New DocumentTo create a new document, do one of the following:

q Select File, New or click on the New button in theStandard toolbar if you want to start with a blankpage.

q Select File, New From Template if you want tochoose a template upon which to base yourdocument. You can choose one of the templates thatis installed during the CorelDRAW installation or onefrom the \Corel\Graphics10\Draw\Template folderof the CorelDRAW CD-ROM Disk #1.

Saving DocumentsThe File, Save As command displays a dialog box where youcan give a new document a filename and specify a locationin which to store it. The File, Save command is used whenyou want to overwrite the current file.

Closing a documentSelect File, Close or if you want to close several documentsat the same time select Window, Close All.

Setting Up the PageOne of the first options you should set when you createyour artwork is the page setup. By choosing the options inthe Property Bar or by selecting Layout, Page Setup youchoose the options for page size and orientation.

Provided nothing is currently selected, you can choose thepage options directly in the Property Bar such as page size,dimensions, and orientation. By choosing the Custompaper size, you can specify a size of up to 150 x 150 feet(45.7 x 45.7 meters).

By selecting Layout, Page Setup all the page setup optionsare available in the dialog box. For example, you can creategreeting cards, books, booklets, and change the displaycolor to view your documents as they would print oncolored paper.

� To change the page size and orientation for the currentpage only:

1. Do one of the following:

q If you are using the Property Bar, click thebottom-most Current Page Size and Orientation.

q If you are using the Page Setup dialog box, check theResize current page only option.

2. Choose the desired page size and orientation. Only thecurrent page will change to the new size andorientation.

Moving Around the Current PageThere are several ways to move around the current page:

� To zoom using the Zoom Levels box in the Standardtoolbar:

Click the down arrow beside the Zoom Levels box andselect the desired zoom percentage.

� To use the Zoom tool in the toolbox:

When you select the Zoom tool in the toolbox, the PropertyBar displays several zoom tools:

Zoom levels: choose one of the pre-defined zoompercentages or type in a custom number.

Zoom In: zooms by 2x each time you click in an area, or,drag a zoom marquee box.

Zoom Out: zooms back out to previous zoom view.

Zoom To Selected: zooms to selected objects only.

Zoom To All Objects: zooms to view all objects on the pageand desktop area.

Zoom To Page: zooms to view entire page.

Zoom To Page Width: zooms to the full width of the page.

Zoom To Page Height: zooms to the full height of the page.

� To use the Navigator:

Once you’ve zoomed into the drawing, you can activate theNavigator pop-up to move to a different area. Click theNavigator button at the bottom-right corner of the imagewindow or press [N]. Move the frame within the miniaturethumbnail and click to navigate to that area.

Viewing ModesYou can change the view quality of your drawings whileworking in CorelDRAW. These view qualities displaydrawings using complexity levels ranging from just outlinesto all fills, outlines, and bitmaps. You can choose thedesired view mode from the View command.

You can choose from one of the following five viewqualities:

Simple Wireframe: Shows only outlines of objects. Hidesfills and special effects such as extrusions, contours, andblending.

Wireframe: Shows only outlines of objects. Hides fills butdisplays special effects such as extrusions, contours, andblending.

Draft: Shows solid fills, but displays special fills such asfountain fills and patterns as solid colors.

Normal: Shows all fills except Postscript fills andhigh-resolution bitmaps.

Enhanced: Uses 2X oversampling to show the best possibledisplay quality at the sacrifice of redraw speed. Thedefault view.

Previewing the Current PageThere are two ways to see just the illustration without thescreen elements such as Windows buttons, Menu Bar,toolbars, and toolbox. Select View, Full-Screen Preview orpress [F9].

Once you preview the document, press the [F9] key or clickthe right mouse button to get back to the CorelDRAWscreen.

Inserting and Deleting PagesYou can add pages to the current document using Layout,Insert Page. CorelDRAW allows you to create up to 999pages per file. This will allow you to produce multi-pagenewsletters and brochures using only one file.

The page navigator appears in the lower left corner of thescreen. Here, page tabs for moving between pages and adisplay showing the total number of pages are displayed.

To insert pages, select Layout, Insert Page and enter therange of pages to insert and click OK. Or, click the + sign inthe page navigator when available.

To delete pages, select Layout, Delete Page and enter therange of pages to delete and click OK.
