Booking Information How do I book onto a course? To book onto a School Workforce course please use the electronic course application form available on the Wave for Schools at: https://wave4schools.brighton-hove.gov.uk > Schools > Learning & Development for Schools > Courses & Events and return to [email protected] Please Note: To book onto EVC or OEAP Visit Leaders Training (Risk Management in the Outdoors), please contact Paula Greening or Roger Simmons on (01273) 293642 or e-mail: [email protected] or [email protected]
What happens once I’ve made a booking? The courses are administered by the School Workforce & Governor Support Team and we will let you know two-three weeks before the event if you have gained a place and will send full joining instructions. You should not assume you are booked onto a course until you receive confirmation from us. If you have not received a response from us two weeks before the course start date, please contact us for confirmation. What happens if I don’t attend or cancel my place? Currently we lose money, and valuable training places are not filled, because people fail to turn up or cancel their place at short notice. Therefore, for courses administered by the School Workforce & Governor Support Team, we operate the following late cancellation policy in line with other council teams: Late Cancellation / Non-attendance Fee For late withdrawals (within ten working days of the course) or non-attendance at an event the full cost of the course will charged (if there is one) or will incur a late cancellation fee of £25 per half day course or £50 for a full day course. This reflects the average half daily and daily cost of a training place per person. No charge will be incurred if a delegate is substituted by a suitable colleague. The cancellation fee will be waived in exceptional circumstances. It is the responsibility of all staff to ensure they have signed the attendee list at the beginning of each training course day. Any staff who do not sign the course attendance register will be considered a non-attendance and will be charged accordingly. If you attend a training session without making a booking you will be charged a £5 administration fee. How to cancel a course If you are booked to attend a course but have to cancel, please let School Workforce & Governor Support know by email at the earliest opportunity so we can offer the place to someone else. You can request that a colleague substitute for you at no cost. Email: [email protected]

How do I get the most out of a training day Before the event: Talk through with your manager or a colleague what you hope to get out of the training day. Review the aims and Description, discuss how the training will help you develop your own practice or enhance your relationships with colleagues from other schools or services. During the event: What you can expect from the training?
Trainer has a well structured plan for the whole session and maintains a good pace throughout in order to deliver the whole programme
Trainer plans effectively and sets clear Description that are easily understood and are clearly communicated at the beginning of the event.
Trainer shows good subject knowledge and communicates this effectively with the delegates. Relevance is demonstrated throughout.
Training methods used enable all delegates to learn effectively. Barriers to learning are identified and addressed. Content is presented in such a way that delegates can apply the learning to their work
situations Instructions and explanations are clear and specific. Delegates have an opportunity to ask questions to aid their understanding and the trainer
responds appropriately Trainer engages all delegates throughout the event and involves all delegates as appropriate. Trainer ensures that an effective learning environment is maintained throughout and addresses
any issues that arise The trainer reviews learning at the end of the event / session. Trainer provides all delegates with the opportunity to evaluate the session, identify the impact
of the learning and promotes the post event evaluation process Delegates should also be given an opportunity to reflect on their learning and plan for post
event application to the workplace. Trainer reviews delegate learning throughout delivery of the event. Trainer makes use of feedback for self–evaluation and future planning (Action Points).
After the event Think and discuss how you can apply what you have learned within your workplace and review this over time. We also hope you will share what you’ve learned with others in your team. This is a great way to embed your learning so that it makes a difference. What is the School Workforce and Governor Support Team doing to ensure this training makes a difference? We are striving to ensure that we use the best people to deliver training. If you don’t think they are good enough then please tell us about it.

How are we promoting equalities and inclusion in training access and delivery? The School Workforce and Governor Support Team is committed to challenging discrimination and negative stereotyping of minority groups. We expect all our staff, consultants, course participants and trainers to meet this commitment. Therefore we will:
Challenge behaviour and language that is discriminatory Avoid discriminatory language. If this is used, it must be justifiable in terms of facilitating
learning, and not gratuitous Promote positive images of traditionally excluded groups Be open to criticism and learn from this Make reasonable adjustments to meet special requirements (e.g. we can supply information
on any course in this guide in large print) Involve people who use services in development Include examples in learning interventions of good practice in supporting people from minority
groups We ask you to:
Notify us of any special requirements Challenge behaviour or language that you feel is discriminatory Ensure that all staff are given opportunities to access learning
If you need more information please contact the School Workforce & Governor Support Team: Email [email protected] Telephone 01273 293466

Safer Recruitment Online Training
Course Description
http://www.education.gov.uk/e-learning/login/index.php This session provides an overview of the requirements of 'safer recruitment' related legislation. Experience shows that it is important for organisations providing services to children to incorporate into their recruitment procedures measures that help to prevent the appointment of people who are unsuitable to work with children. This programme has 5 modules in addition to this short introduction Module 1 provides background information about abuse in schools. It looks at the roles that unsuitable individuals might take, inside the mind of child sex abusers, how schools might inadvertently support and even encourage an unsuitable individual, and what a school can do to help prevent abuse. Module 3 looks at evaluation and shortlisting procedures, and the 'invitation to interview' sent to shortlisted applicants. The importance of obtaining references and the need for proof of the candidate's identity and qualifications are emphasised. Interview questioning and character observation guidelines conclude this module. Module 5 examines the need for ongoing awareness and vigilance, and considers how organisations can develop and maintain an environment that deters and prevents abuse and challenges inappropriate behaviour.
Intended for
Headteachers, Designated Persons, Senior Leaders and Governors with responsibility for Safeguarding & Child Protection
