Training Ship DANMARKDANMARK is a steel-hulled, three-masted and full-rigged ship. It was built as a training ship in 1933 at Nakskov Shipyard in Denmark. Since then it has provided basic training of young people seeking a career at sea.

The ship is registered in Denmark and is national property. It is capable of sailing all over the world. However, during recent years it has mostly sailed in European waters. On special occasions it crosses the Atlantic Ocean to visit USA, with which the ship has very special ties.

The ship is capable of carrying 26 sails in a total of 1632 square meters. A main engine ensures that the ship will be able to make its way when the wind is unfavorable.

Crew and traineesThe crew consists of 15 people and the ship can accommodate 80 trainees – both men and women. All the trainees are between 17½ and 23 years of age and their stay on board is part of their basic training program to qualify for a career in the merchant navy.

The spoken language on board is mainly English which means that citizens from EU countries can apply to become a trainee. When the course is completed with 14 weeks on board and 6 weeks on a shore based school the trainee will get license to join a merchant ship as an ordinary seaman.

The training program is performed according to the STCW Code.

The challengeWhen signing on the DANMARK as a trainee, you will meet the challenge of living, studying and working in a maritime environment which is intense and occasionally extreme. You will sleep in a hammock, and during the entire tour, your private life will be limited to the hammock, a small cabinet and a small locker.

As trainee you are going to perform nearly all the practical tasks, watch duties etc. on board under supervision of the crew. Furthermore you are taught theoretical subjects – the crew being the teachers. The working hours can be very long – up to 10-12 hours daily divided into watch duties, practical work and theory lessons.

Teamwork and social flexibility are basic fundamentals to make the ship sail in a safe and efficient manner.

DANMARK forms an excellent teaching environment which combines theory and practice. You will achieve technical and social skills difficult to obtain in traditional training environments. Regardless of the type of career you will choose in your life, the challenge of a voyage on board DANMARK provides the best possible qualifications for making a career at sea.
