Bóthar, Anna House, Dunmurry Office Park, 37A Upper Dunmurry Lane, Belfast BT17 0AJ. Ph. 028 90627308 B óthar, along with its project partners Volunteers in Veterinary Assistance (VIVA) and Heifer Tanzania, responded to the needs of farmers throughout this east African country and established an Animal Health training pro- gramme. This project aims to train 90 people, from 100 different communi- ties in north eastern Tanzania, in how to attend to basic animal health in their localities. These people will be live- stock keepers them- selves and will be nomi- nated by their communi- ty to receive the train- ing. The training pro- gramme includes - Effective disease con- trol at grassroots - Disease surveillance and reporting, - Diagnosing and treat- ing common animal ailments, - Correct dispensing of drugs, - Referral to private/public veteri- narians and parapro- fessionals, - Record keeping They will be provided with veterinary kits and trained how to adminis- ter medicine and to cor- rectly diagnose and treat common animal ill- nesses. It is important that this system is affordable for farmers and self-sus- taining after outside funding ceases. For a period of two years after the training takes place, ongoing support and monitoring of the proj- ect will take place to ensure the sustainable uptake of the project, with refresher trainings being provided as appro- priate. Professional vet- erinarians will also pro- vide some back up serv- ice post-training for the communities. A central fund will be established to pay for medicine and supplies and bicycles will be pro- vided so that the animal health workers can deliver their services to even the most remote farmers. This is not the first project of its kind in Tanzania as Bóthar’s partner here, Heifer Tanzania, has been working in the country since 1973 and has already successfully trained over 300 animal health workers in neigh- bouring communities. The reach of this project is also wide, as there are an estimated 100,000 people in the 100 vil- lages involved in this project. Animal health workers in Tanzania will provide an invaluable veterinarian backup to farmers throughout the north east of the country. www.bothar.org Please Pass-On To A Friend Training the trainers . . . Pa used to be a driver, transporting petrol fromthe South West to theWest provinces ofCameroon, but lost hisjob after suffering fromgout in both his legs. The condition was sobad that Pa needed to beoperated upon.

After leaving hospital,Pa was faced with a hos-pital bill he knew hecouldn't pay.

This was the lowestpoint for Pa. With no joband no income, Pa hopedfor better.

And hope came ...

Rather than pity him-self, Pa relocated him-self and his family to thecentre of the villagewhere Pa started farm-ing. This would be hisfull-time job. With sup-port from his family, Pasucceeded in harvesting90 buckets of corn and15 bags of groundnutsin the first year – a greatachievement for a first-time farmer.

Unfortunately, this wasnot enough to sustainhis family and pay forhis children’s education.Pa needed to supplementhis income. One daywhile he was in the vil-

lage, Pa heard aboutBóthar’s work with bee-farming and applied totake part in the project.Through the Bóthartraining programme, Palearned about modernbee keeping, compost-ing, agriculture andgardening.

After successfully com-pleting the training, Pareceived 6 of the 60hives that were giventhe group. “Five of my

children are fullyinvolved and they helpme daily with clearing, raking around the beehives and fetchingwater.”

Adopting the Bótharmethod of passing onthe gift, Pa will use partof his income to financethe purchase of six hivesof honey-bees for anoth-er needy family who arewaiting to receive the

bees. “With six hives, Ipromise to help anotherfamily the way that Ihave been helped. I wantto ensure that this proj-ect continues long intothe future,” Pa declared.

Pa owes his success todonors like you whocontinue to supportBothar’s projects in thefield. “My life haschanged, my family isnow proud of me, and Iam now fully recognizedin my community. Inaddition my family ishealthy as a result of theknowledge I have gainedand the honey hasstrengthened theimmune system of myentire family,” he proud-ly stated.

Nobody in the Dimicfamily has a regular job.Goran is a trained veteri-narian technician buthas no job. He volun-teers his time and skillsto help out other farm-ing families in hisregion.

The reason we visitedwas that one of Goran’ssows had given birth to21 piglets! This is a veryrare case, not only inGoran’s village, but alsoin Kosovo. Goran neededexpert advice in helpingthe sow to look after somany piglets!

We helped the family todivide the piglets intotwo groups. To distin-guish the groups, one

half had a red markpainted on their back. Now the suckling takesplace in two shifts - withthe red group feedingfirst, followed by the sec-ond group.

The family is extremelygrateful to Bóthar andtheir field partner,Heifer International, forgiving them their breed-ing sows. Goran saysthat the quality of the

breed is far superior tothe local breed.

One of the sows has hadthree pregnancies intotal. The first two pro-duced 14 piglets eachtime while the thirdpregnancy produced therecord-breaking litter. There is a ready marketamongst the local peoplefor their piglets. Eachpiglet earns the family€50. The family’sincome has increased byover 30% since thearrival of their Bótharsow.

Without the incomeGoran makes from hislivestock, the Dimic fam-ily would have very littlemoney.

Half of the money theyearn through the sale ofpigs is invested back inthe farm. They purchasegood quality concentrat-ed feed for their ani-mals. They recognisethat if they treat theiranimals well they are

assured of a constantstream of income in thefuture.

The remaining incomefrom the sale of the pigshas been used to sendGoran’s children toschool. All three of thechildren, Nikola 16,Jovana 14 and Angela 8,are now attending thelocal school.

I left Goran’s farm thatday with proof that onesmall animal can makecan make such a bigchange in the lives of thefarmers in Kosovo.

The goats that arrivedfrom Ireland in the pre-vious decade were care-fully bred by theUgandan farmers. Theyrecognised that they hadto do their best to ensurethe quality of the goats. These goats produced a

much greater amount ofmilk than the local goatsand therefore weremuch more valuable.

Bóthar Tanzania wantedto source good qualitygoats for strugglingfamilies who lived alongthe Ugandan border.Instead of looking toEurope or South Africafor good quality goats,as they have in the past, they contacted the goatfarmers supported byBóthar in Uganda. TheUgandan farmers weredelighted to have anopportunity to find anew market for their

animals.

The cross border initia-tive took place on April13, 2010, at Mutukulaborder post and was thefirst of its kind for thetwo country pro-grammes.

While handing over thegoats, the representativefrom Heifer Uganda pro-gram thanked the man-agement of the twocountry programmes forrecognising the need tohelp each other. TheBóthar field workerfrom Tanzania wasextremely impressed by

the quality of the goatsand the excellent goatmanagement employedby the Uganda farmersand promised to importmore goats for their pro-gramme later this year.

The goats originatedfrom three farmergroups; Kisinga Women

Dairy Goat project,Kayunga Dairy Goatproject and NakalamaDairy goat project inWestern and Easternregions of Uganda.

This is the first time thatan event like this hasoccurred and hopefullyit will not be the last.

As part of this programme,Bóthar have sent almost 600dairy heifers since 2006. Themost recent airlift of 67 cattle

were distributed to families inGicumbi, Rusizi andRwamagana in the north, westand east of the country, respec-tively. Though part of a largergovernment programme, Bótharrequired that the pass-on stilltake place and to date, 60 ani-mals have been passed on to fur-ther beneficiaries in Bugesera,Ngororero, Huye and Rusizi.

In addition to the transport ofanimals, Artificial Insemination(AI) straws were also sent,

greatly increasing the efficacyof the airlift and the effect uponlocal Rwandan stock. Veterinarytechnicians are also on hand foraiding in transport and the gen-eral health of the animals whilethe families have planted fodderand built housing for their ani-mals. Manure is being used toimprove crop fertility but also iscentral to another governmentinitiative, the National BiogasProgramme, which will see thecountrywide implementation ofbiogas fermenters on the fami-lies’ farms. Biogas reduces afamilies need to collect or pur-chase firewood for cooking, allowing them to spend moretime tending to their animalswhile also protecting the localenvironment.

Recovery for Rwandans will be along road but one that is nowclearly defined and will be great-ly aided by the provision of qual-ity dairy animals.

TTrraaiinniinngg:: Farmers have beentrained in establishing fodderplots for their animals, housingand general care.

DDiissttrriibbuuttiioonn:: 67 heifers wereairlifted to Gicumbi, Rusizi andRwamagana and a further pass-on of 60 heifers to Bugesera,Ngororero, Huye and Rusizi.12,000 A.I. straws were alsosent.
