on behalf of YBI I would like to extend a warm welcome to you, and all the Global Summit delegates arriving from around the world. Individually you represent your organisation and the YBI network which has now spread to over 40 countries, providing crucial support to tens of thousands of young people; collectively you represent an exceptional and unique group of youth entrepreneurship support practitioners. We are excited and honoured to have you here.

For those of you who are attending your first Global Summit, you will soon find out that this week presents a fantastic opportunity to share your expertise and to learn from others. In addition to this, the Summit is a great social occasion, giving you the chance to meet your YBI network colleagues face to face. This year we’ve launched a dedicated online community to help strengthen this important network asset. You can find out more about making the most of this new resource in your delegate pack.

As you know, youth employment is a growing global issue, an opportunity and a challenge that threatens prosperity and security in developed economies as much as growth and development in the emerging economies of the world. Since our last gathering in mexico, the world has become more aware of the scale of this challenge and is looking to our network and organisations like yours for solutions. I believe that at this Global Summit the YBI network can build on the tremendous progress we have made in the past three years and take another step towards our vision of making sure every aspiring young entrepreneur has the means to succeed.

Simply put, if we can’t find enough work for young people today, and the next generation of young people, then we are going to face a world that is significantly less stable, less prosperous, and less optimistic.

our biggest challenge is that there is still not enough support available for young people who want to start up their own business. Throughout our network, entrepreneurs tell us that the odds are stacked against them, from the education system to the bank manager.

Business as usual got us where we are today; we need to do things differently.

That is what the Global Youth entrepreneurship Summit is all about. It is about doing business as UNusual.

Business as unusual means looking at new ways to get young entrepreneurs the support they need. Business as unusual means not accepting that the systems that have worked in the past are always the most effective for the future of our economies.

over the very varied programme of the four days of the Global Summit you will experience the opportunity to learn, connect and share with others. You will also get the rare chance to see and be part of our global network in action. You will witness the synergies that come from working together and you as an individual will have the power to help set the direction of our network in the coming years.

Case study 1: frank ColzieFrank was unemployed for a number of years after losing his job. After countless rejections, struggling to find work he started suffering from depression, insomnia and anxiety. He was fixing bikes at this time to keep himself busy, a great hobby of his. He turned to the Trust to turn this hobby into a business. Frank was given a ‘Will it work grant’ to test his idea.

He sourced second hand bikes to refurbish and re-sell, the profit from this he used for an Advanced Bike mechanics course.Frank then took on a shop front. His business mentor gave him the essential knowledge to set up Re-cycle Bristol, selling re-conditioned bikes.

“I would never have been able to set up my business without the help of The Prince’s Trust. I am really pleased with the success of Re-cycle Bristol and I hope to see the business grow.”

Case study 2: veronica noonanAt the age of 17, Veronica Noonan, from Wakefield, found herself homeless while studying a two year art course, and had to live in hotels for the homeless. She couldn’t even afford the bus to college. Despite this Veronica passed her art course with a triple merit grade and then secured a flat.

Veronica was now more determined to make a success of her life and decided to train as a plumber, gaining a city & Guilds level 2 qualification. She was then in and out of voluntary work, work placements and a job outside the sector, which she was unfortunately made redundant from.

Veronica then heard about The Prince’s Trust enterprise programme, which gives support and funding to help young people set up their own businesses.

With the help of a business mentor, she put together a business plan and launched her own plumbing business, Sugar-Plumb Solutions in 2011. It has been a real success giving Veronica a regular income.

The Prince’s Trust supports over 55,000 young people a year into work, education and training. our enterprise programme helps aspiring entrepreneurs to develop and test their business ideas, before providing them with low interest loans and mentor support to start their business. The Prince’s Trust is a member of Youth Business International. Here are two case studies of young people who have benefited from the enterprise programme in recent years:

Available to all global summit delegates, we have organised an afternoon of networking and fun at the historic vinopolis visitor attraction on the southbank of the thames. the afternoon will include lunch (provided) after which delegates will take the Chocolate Challenge.

The chocolate challenge simulates a complete business process from idea through to design, production, marketing and promotion.

mentoring: A successful mentoring programme can make a significant difference to the ability of young entrepreneurs to succeed in business. The mentoring Specialist Track will have a strong focus on knowledge sharing, exploring good practice and networking.

monitoring, evaluation and learning (mel): The sessions have been designed to meet member mel needs as defined through prior consultation with all participants regarding both content and format. As such, the Track is designed to be as interactive as possible, taking a ‘learning by doing’ approach, and focuses on key learning questions that have emerged across the network.

technology: The Technology track of the Global Summit is primarily for those members who are using or soon to be using, YBI’s operations management System (omS), which is built on Salesforce.com. The Track aims to build a community of omS users, increase skills and confidence and work towards defining a roadmap for the specialism.

training: The purpose of the Training Specialist Track is to enable YBI members to maximise the effectiveness of their youth entrepreneurship training activities. In particular, it aims to establish the best ways to share best practice in youth entrepreneurship training, understand the role of technology in training, and explore opportunities for working in partnership within and outside the network.

Bringing together training experts from across the YBi network, the purpose of the training specialist track is to initiate a global community of practice and learning that enables YBi members to maximise the effectiveness of their training activities. As such this track aims to achieve the following objectives:

• Agree channels for informal sharing of best practice in youth entrepreneurship training

• Derive insight into the role of technology in delivering youth entrepreneurship training

• enhance the ability of the YBI network team to help meet training needs in the network

• explore opportunities for working in partnership within and outside the network

The programme combines presentations, workshops and small group activities as part of encouraging lively discussion and active engagement by all participants throughout the week. Based on consultations with network members, sessions have been designed to respond to the needs and expectations of participants as well as to feed into the development of YBI’s global training offering that will be made available to network members. The training programme also provides opportunity for engaging with network specialists participating in other tracks through joint working sessions and informal networking.
