Hi James,Business has improved over the past year and the outlook for 2015 is good. I require a loan to help me expand further. My loan application was refused only on the basis that I could not provide equity. Is there anything I can do?

James says:The Government introduced The Credit guarantee scheme in October 2012. Under the terms of the scheme, €150 million was made available to the SME sector every year for three years.

The fund is aimed at businesses that have insufficient collateral (equity) and/or are operating in sectors that banks do not fully understand. The loans are channelled through the participating banks — Bank of Ireland, AIB and Ulster Bank. The minimum loan amount is €10,000 and the maximum any one company can receive is €1m. Essentially the Government will provide a guarantee to the lender of 75% of the value of the loan, therefore providing the bank with 75% equity. In return, businesses in receipt of the loan will have to pay the Government a 2% premium on the value of the loan. While the charge has been criticised by some as excessive, in practise a more competitive interest rate can be negotiated as a result of the high level of equity/guarantee now being provided.Access to credit is essential for business survival and expansion. The credit guarantee scheme should move the risk pendulum of banks to say ‘yes’ to more small businesses. I would strongly recommend that you research or take advice on this matter as more than likely it is you that will need to highlight the availability of this scheme to your banker.

The Countdown Has Begun to the Kerins O Rahillys 10KWith less than 3 weeks to go, the countdown has begun for the inaugural Kerins O Rahillys 10K on the 1st February; runners at this stage will have most of their training completed for the event. If this is your rst 10k your midweek runs should be averaging between three and four miles and ideally you should be doing a long run of 5 miles this weekend. Decide this week which shoes you are going to run in and train in them once or twice a week in the coming weeks so they are well broken in. You need to plan your run and race pace at this stage; this will depend on your race goal. Set yourself realistic goals, if it is your rst 10k maybe you will be happy enough with just completing the course and enjoying the day. Some of you might be using the race as a preparation for the Valentines Run on the 15th February or the Kerry’s Eye Tralee International Marathon on March 15th, if so you will be in the heavy/peaking phase of your training and hence you will have to run the race accordingly. If the Kerins O Rahillys 10K is your race goal this year you should be starting your taper and reducing your training intensity over the coming weeks. Begin your mental preparation this week, visualise yourself running the route, visualise yourself running past each kilometre. Do a bit of research on the route, it can be viewed at www.runthekingdom.ie, pick out certain hills, when they come on the route and plan your race strategy with this in mind, maybe over the coming weeks you can do some of your training on the route or drive it to get a feel of what lies ahead. For some runners on the 1st February the Kerins O Rahillys 10K will be their rst, for others it will be part of their preparation for the Valentines Run or the Kerry’s Eye Tralee International Marathon, so whatever your goal is run your race accordingly but most of all make sure you enjoy the day. Registration for the race is available from www.runthekingdom.ie or at the Kerins O Rahillys club house next Wednesday between 7pm and 9pm. Next week we will look at how to prepare for the race in the week leading up to the big day.Marcus Howlett

The 10K will start a great day of Sport in Kerry with the Kerry Senior Football team playing Mayo at home on the same day. “The Sam Maguire may even be present!!!”. Runners and walkers of all standards are welcome and will be presented with a unique medal to mark the occasion. Light refreshments and prize giving will take place in the clubhouse immediately after the last runner home.

Tuesday 6th January 2015: The Environmental Protection Agency is urging everyone in to go ‘Green in 2015’. Over the festive season households will produce more than 65,000 tonnes of used packag-ing, that is the same weight as 65,000 small family cars! The EPA wants to remind Kerry households to start the New Year afresh and Reduce, Reuse and Recycle with a visit to your local recycling centre. Jonathan Derham from the EPA says, “The New Year presents the perfect opportunity to re-think our attitude towards sustainable living. We can all contribute to a greener future by keeping some useful waste prevention ideas in mind. Kerry residents can all save money and cut down on the pressure placed on our environment in 2015 by making recycling their New Year’s Resolution. Remember - by not generating waste, we eliminate the need to handle, transport, treat and dispose of it.”Green New Year’s resolutions that are good for you and good for the environment:• Switch away from smoky coal if you use it.• Do the radon test for your house.• Take all your old medicines to your pharmacy• Put flow restrictors on your water taps.• Remove any old filament bulbs in use in the house.• Plan your food shopping.

• Buy produce locally, this supports small suppliers and your local community, while minimising your carbon footprint.• Recycle your old batteries to shops where they are sold. • Take your old electronic gizmos to your local authority recycling centre or to your electronic retailer for free recycling.• Bring your unused clothes, books and toys to a charity shop. • Plant something, particularly a tree.• If you have a private water well, have it tested.• Service your septic tank.• Turn down the thermostat by 1 degree C, keep curtains closed and doors shut to keep heat in and save energy and money. • Start the New Year with a walk in your community and countryside. It is not only healthy, but it is good to remind ourselves what we are all trying to protect and enhance. Kerry County Council can direct you to your nearest recycling facilities, or check out http://www.repak.ie/recycling_facilities.php for a list of bring banks and recycling centres.

GO GREEN IN 2015Green New Year’s Resolutions for County Kerry

Kerry’s 22,000 smokers could save thousands on insurance pre-miums- if they give up. Thats according to Airi from the Healthier Choice shop in Tralee shopping centre .

“In a recent report from Life protection specialists Royal London , smokers can pay more than double that of non-smokers for the cost of their Life assurance and Mortgage Protection policies” says Airi We find that the costs involved in smoking play a huge part in people deciding to give them up .So as well as the savings you can make from not buying cigarettes each day , it is great to be able to tell people that they can save in other ways (Not to mention the health benefits !) The costs of changing over to electronic cigarettes

are only a fraction of what it costs you to buy cigarettes” says Airi who also has e-cigarette stores in Limerick and Killarney

Experts at Royal London, who recently rebranded from Caledonian Life to the name of their parent company, are reminding those smokers whose New Year’s resolution it is to kick the habit in 2015, that there are additional money saving benefits which they may not have thought about. The Protection specialists say that smokers can pay more than double that of non-smokers for the cost of their Life assurance and Mortgage Protection policies.Tadgh Malone, Royal London representative in Kerry explains, “For thousands of people across the country their New Year’s Resolution will be to try to quit smoking. For those lucky enough to have “stuck to their guns” and still be “off” cigarettes this time next year, it could mean savings not just on the direct costs of smoking, but also on the cost of their monthly Life assurance premiums. Latest figures from cancer.ie reveal that approx. 19% of the Irish population (people over the age of 15) are smokers – this equates to 22,000 people in Kerry alone. These savings are just another to add to the long list of incentives to stop smoking”.

music player and is the resident traditional music teacher at the Yamaha School of Music in Tralee. internationally. Paddy has been teaching the ddle, 4-string banjo, mandolin and Irish bazouki for over 20 years and has compiled and written

his own books for students. Paddy can be booked for a free consultation class for school-going and adult students through the school oce.

Unlike other 3D printers that include certain proprietary aspects, the LulzBot Mini was developed through a publicly accessible archive that includes specica-tions, schematics, parts, suppliers, prototypes and more.

SNAPCAM

The new SnapCam is far smaller and lighter than previous versions, measuring 1.5 inches (3.8cm) square and weighs a little more than an ounce. With just a swipe on the body, the camera kicks on and with a single tap it captures an 8-megapixel photo. Tap it twice and it starts recording 720p HD video at 30 frames per second and another tap stops it. A triple tap starts it live-streaming video using its built-in Wi-Fi and Bluetooth.

PACIF-IThe new Pacif-i looks like a regular pacier, but is actually a smart device for infants and toddlers that measures a baby's

temperature and transmits that data to a connected app for Android or iPhone using Bluetooth Low Energy.

WHAT’S HAPPENING IN TRALEE...BISHOP RAY BROWN LAUNCHES “SHAPING OUR DIOCESE”...The Diocese of Kerry is preparing a new Pastoral Plan for 2015-2020. Conscious of the changing reality of society and church today, the diocese will carry out a comprehensive listening process in order to hear people’s hopes, challenges and expectations at this time. The pastoral plan will provide the diocese with a road-map/direction over the next 5 years. Launching the listening process, Bishop Ray Browne said “It is important to consult and listen to what people are saying. At times we think we know what people need, but that is not always accurate, so it is important to ask. We believe that listening to people speak about their concerns is an essential starting point.”To hear people’s concerns and hopes, there will be gatherings held throughout the diocese. From now until mid-March, there will be a listening meeting held in each of 12 pastoral areas. Each evening will begin at 8pm and conclude by 9.30pm, and there will be an opportunity for everyone present to share their concerns, hopes and expectations. The diocesan pastoral team will facilitate the gathering. All comments will be noted and will form the basis for drawing up the pastoral plan. Everyone is welcome to attend. For further information about your local listening gathering, check out your parish newsletter, check Upcoming Events on this site and listen in to Horizons or Community Diary on Radio Kerry.Schedule of Shaping Our Diocese Meetings:

Met Eireann have downgraded their RED weather alert to ORANGE this morning.“Southwest winds will reach mean speeds of 65 to 80 km/h with gusts of 110 to 120 km/h at times, highest in exposed areas. Winds will veer westerly later.”Kerry County Council, An Garda Siochana and the HSE would like to thank the public for their assistance in listening to the advice issued and acting upon it. The advice given by the three agencies was in the interests of public safety, based on the predicted weather information that was available to us and based on the code RED weather alert issued by Met Eireann, the highest alert they can issue. Given the devastation experienced in Kerry the last time a code RED was issued, which was last February during Storm Darwin, all agencies felt that issuing such advice was necessary in the interests of public safety. Schools in Tralee were closed on Thursday as a precautionery measure and many events were cancelled or postponed. While there was some storm related damage in the county, Kerry was extremely fortunate that the worst of the storm passed north of Kerry, impacting upon Galway, Mayo, Sligo and Donegal. They experienced damage to trees, property and power outages.

“MARK IS THE MAN OF MANY VOICES” - SAYS DJ CURTINMark Leen...., where does one begin to describe one of Tralee’s most colourful characters, he has just finished organising the extremely successful Elvis Rocks Weekendat the INEC and no sooner is he back from Killarney than he is teaming up with his great friend and musical partner DJ Curtin for what promises to be an exciting new show at Siamsa Tire.

“Mark has been managing things for me for a few years in Ireland now said DJ, and after he quit his Elvis act in early 2013, I knew he missed the feel of the live audience, he is a showman and he is a good entertainer and I suggested to him that he should try out an idea he had mentioned to me over 10 years ago, the Man of Many Voices Show, if anyone can do it then it would be Mark, it is basically a variety show but it takes in different decades and types of music, and yes Elvis comes into it too, of course he would have to. My late brother Billy taught Mark how to play sax and Clarinet and he is bringing elements of that into the show also, I’ve seen the rehearsals only today as I speak and I think the audience will love it, he had me in stiches laughing, he does great impressions and im really delighted to see him back performing again. He was on stage as MC in Killarney over the weekend for the Elvis festival and every time he came out on stage the crowd were at him to sing, he has come a long way and we have been singing companions now for over 10 years, he has great vision and energy and when he gets the bit between his teeth he lets nothing stop him.He has taken direction from a Vegas based producer,

I’ve seen some of the costumes he has for the new show, they are unbelievable, he has a Jacket that lights up for his Elton John routine and he has the big screen coming from the north to augment the performance, fair play he puts the money up on the stage and audiences know that about him. We sold out St John’s in Listowel and he didn’t make anything out of it such were his costs, but he

knows that if you want to get a return then you have to give audiences their moneys worth. I can honestly say no one is doing a show in Ireland like the one he is now performing. I am doing some new songs also for this show, there are some great characters in Tralee and I love to catch up with them when im home, Billy Mc Elligott, Aidan O Connor and Mark of course and Fox Connor and many more, mind you the weather is a big change from 110 degree heat, this storm we are experiencing over the past few nights would be headline news if it were in Vegas, but here they take no notice of it. It was nice to see the Brogue Inn opened again and Bill’s daughter and son in law making a great job of it. Tralee has changed a lot since I Left here in 79, and yet many things are still as they were which I like. Mark is doing a Liberace impression in the new show with a full length white faux fur coat, it’s very funny, I lived right around the corner from “Lee” for many years, I used to see him go to his rehearsals and performances dressed to the nines in the back of his limo. Im looking forward to Siamsa next fri night the 23rd, I think it will be one of our best and something very memorable, its nice to see the birth of a new show and I have no doubt it will be received well, I am looking forward to seeing my friends again at the show, I just finished up a couple of weeks with Brendan Bowyer and the Showband Show in the North, but to be honest, there is nothing like coming home to Tralee, the audience is the best in the world and im always sad to fly back to Vegas and leave my sister Kathleen and brothers John and Alfie and all of the family and friends here.”

Bexblah BeautyHello everyone! Happy Friday! This week on Bexblah Beauty I’m going to be talking all about my current haircare routine. A lot of the products this week are on the pricier side but I believe that paying that little bit extra on haircare is worth it.

CURRENT HAIRCARE ROUTINEShampoo - Macadamia Rejuvenating Shampoo: After

being so blonde I needed a good shampoo to really help my hair. This shampoo, designed to add moisture and protection to all hair types and excellent for dry, damaged hair really does what it says on the tin! It is sulfate & paraben free, gentle cleanses chemically treated damaged hair and protects from harsh daily

environmental elements. I’ve been using this shampoo since late November and I really see a difference in my hair. It’s softer, shinier and feels better all round. Because it’s sulphate free it’s great to wash my extensions with too! It is a high end shampoo though so it’s a little pricey. I got a pack, shampoo conditioner & hair mask for €34 in TK MAXX which was a great deal they weren’t the full size 300ml bottles though, which retail at about 19.50 on BeautyMatters.ie.

Conditioner - Macadamia Moisturizing Rinse: Again, I needed a good conditioner to help my hair. This is a conditioner that gently nourishes, detangles, moisturises and protects leaving hair soft, manageable and ready to style. In conjunction with the Macadamia shampoo this conditioner works a dream. You don’t need to use that much and I apply it everywhere but my scalp. The conditioner gently detangles, nourishes and protects, leaves hair soft and manageable, provides UV protection and reduces static.

Hair Mask - Macadamia Deep Repair Masque: Macadamia Deep Repair Masque is a revitalizing hair reconstructor for dry, damaged hair. A combination of macadamia oil and argan oil along with tea tree oil, chamomile oil, aloe and algae extracts rejuvenate and rebuild the hair, leaving the hair deeply nourished for improved elasticity and shine with long-lasting conditioning benefits. I had heard so much about this mask and was

excited to try it. It says on the bottle leave on 7 minutes but I like to leave it on overnight to really give my hair a treat, you don’t have to though it’s just I’ve really thick hair.

A little goes a long way also. I use it once a week and I can really see this difference in my hair, plus it smells amazing! Hair Oil – Redken Diamond Oil Shatterproof Intense:

My amazing hairdresser in Patricks The Hair Company recommended this for my hair. Diamond Oil Shatterproof Shine Intense is a concentrated leave-in hair oil for coarse or

dry hair. It strengthens, smoothes & protects hair from breakage. The use of this hair oil for coarse and dry hair will make hair 3 times stronger while protecting it from damages due to friction from brushing and styling. You can use this on your hair anytime, as a hair mask mixed in with coconut oil or your own conditioner the night before you shower, mixed in with your conditioner in the shower, on your wet hair after the shower or on dry hair to add shine! It’s a fantastic product, smells amazing and you don’t need to use much at a time at all so it’s well worth the money, it retails at about €25-€30, which may have some of you gasping for air, but it really is amazing if your hair is in need of some serious TLC! Brush – Tangle Teezer: I don’t think I’ll ever use any hairbrush ever again. With the risk of sounding insane, my Tangle Teezer is my life, not literally but it’s amazing. When my hair gets to that ‘I’m afraid to put a brush near it stage’, which is rare I promise, it comes through those knots like a dream! It’s not harsh on wet hair either like other hairbrushes that can cause breakage. If you don’t have a Tangle Teezer, get one, I promise you won’t be disappointed.

So that’s it for this week! I hope you all enjoyed my little haul/review. Have a great weekend and I’ll be back here next week with more beauty related goodness! If you want to contact me for an event, collaboration or just to say hi you can email me at [email protected] or through any social media, FACEBOOK: Bexblah Beauty, TWITTER: @Bexblah, INSTAGRAM: @Bexblah.

Bexblah Fitness!Hello Everyone! I’ve been crazy busy this past week trying to organise myself, so no gym plan organised yet but I’m working on it! This week I’m talking more about healthy eating as it’s 80% diet and 20% exercise when it comes to losing weight.

1. Eat a Variety of FoodsYou need more than 40 different nutrients for good health and no single food can supply them all. Today’s food supply makes it easy to eat a wide variety of foods whether or not you are buying fresh foods to cook, taking advantage of ready-prepared dishes and meals or buying “take-away” foods. Balance your choice over time! If you have a high-fat lunch, have a low-fat dinner. If you eat a large serving of meat at dinner one day, perhaps choose fish the next day.

2. Base your diet on plenty of foods rich in carbohydratesMost people do not eat enough of foods such as bread, pasta, rice, other cereals and potatoes. More than half the calories in your diet should come from these foods. Try wholegrain bread, pasta and other wholegrain cereals, too, to increase your fibre intake.

3. Enjoy plenty of fruits and vegetablesMost of us do not eat enough of these foods either although they provide important protective nutrients. Try to eat at least five servings a day and if you do not enjoy them at first - try some new recipes or see what ready prepared dishes are available in the supermarket.

4. Maintain a healthy body weight and feel goodThe weight that is right for you depends on many factors including your sex, height, age and heredity. Being overweight increases your risk of a wide range of diseases including heart disease and cancer. Excess body fat results when you eat more calories than you need. These extra calories can come from any caloric nutrient - protein, fat, carbohydrate or alcohol- but fat is the most concentrated source of calories. Physical activity is a good way of increasing the energy you expend each day and it can make you feel good. The message is simple: if you are gaining weight, you need to eat less and be more active.

5. Eat moderate portions - reduce, don’t eliminate foodsIf you keep portion sizes reasonable, it’s easier to eat all the foods you enjoy without having to eliminate any. Ready-prepared meals can offer a handy means of portion control and they often have

the calorie values on the pack to help those who are counting. If you are eating out, you could share a portion with a friend.

6. Eat regularlySkipping meals, especially breakfast, can lead to out-of-control hunger, often resulting in helpless overeating. Snacking between meals can help curb hunger, but don’t eat so much as to substitute for proper meals. Don’t forget to count your snacks as part of your total calorie intake.

7. Drink plenty of fluidsAdults need to drink at least 1.5 litres of fluid a day! Or more if it’s very hot or they are physically active. Plain tap water is obviously a good source of liquid but variety can be both pleasant and healthy.

8. Get on the moveAs we have seen, too many calories and not enough activity can result in weight gain. Moderately physical activity helps burn off those extra calories. It is also good for the heart and circulatory system and for general health and well-being. So, make physical activity part of your daily routine. Use the stairs instead of the lift. Go for a walk in your lunch break. You don’t have to be an athlete to get on the move!

9. Start now and make changes graduallyGradual changes in your lifestyle are much easier to make than major changes all at once. For three days, write down the foods and drinks you consume at meals and as snacks. Do you have too few fruits and or portions of vegetables? To start with, try to eat just one extra piece of fruit and vegetables a day. Are your favourite foods high in fat and making you gain weight? Don’t eliminate those foods and feel miserable, but try to choose low fat options or eat smaller portions. And start using the stairs at work!

10. Remember, it is all about balanceThere are no ‘good’ or ‘bad’ foods, only good or bad diets. Don’t feel guilty about the foods you love, rather eat them in moderation and choose other foods to provide the balance and variety that are vital to good health.

RebeccaIf anyone has any questions etc, you can find me on Facebook ‘Bexblah Fitness’ or email me at [email protected]. Next week will feature any losses, weight or inches, that incur.

Well with the new year behind, us and the weather doing its worst, and us all getting back to a stable week we find a bit less time during the week for cooking up a dinner. For the family here ill give you a few tasty but easy Italian dishes, which don’t take long but are full of goodness. Pasta dishes are always a firm favourite.

Italian Seafood Stew Carbonara

INGREDIENTS:

1. 1/2 cup extra-virgin olive oil, plus more for drizzling 2. 1 fennel bulb, cored and finely chopped 3. 2 celery ribs, finely chopped 4. 1 white onion, finely chopped 5. 1 tablespoon dried oregano (preferably Sicilian) 6. Pinch of crushed red pepper 7. 1 1/2 pounds cleaned squid—bodies cut into 1/2-inch rings, tentacles halved 8. 2 cups dry white wine 9. One can tomato puree 10. 2 lemons—zest of one peeled in strips with a vegetable peeler, zest of the other finely grated 11. Salt and freshly ground black pepper 12. 2 cups water 13. 1 cup fish stock 14. 12 ounces mussels, scrubbed 15. 12 ounces clams, scrubbed 16. 12 ounces shelled and deveined large shrimp 17. 12 ounces skinless seabass fillet, cut into 2-by-1-inch pieces 18. 2 tablespoons finely chopped flat-leaf parsley

PREPARATION:1. In a very large, enameled cast-iron casserole or Dutch oven, heat the 1/2 cup of olive oil. Add the fennel, celery, onion, oregano and crushed red pepper and cook over moderate heat, stirring frequently, until the vegetables are softened, about 15 minutes. Add the squid and cook over moderately low heat for 15 minutes, stirring occasionally. 2. Stir in the wine and bring to a boil over moderately high heat. Cook until evaporated, about 20 minutes. Stir in the tomato puree and strips of lemon zest. Season with salt and pepper and cook over very low heat, stirring occasionally, until very thick, about 40 minutes. 3. Add the water and fish stock and bring to a boil. Remove and discard the lemon zest. Season the stock with salt and pepper. Add the mussels, clams and shrimp, cover and cook until most of the shells have opened, about 5 minutes. Add the seabass and cook until opaque, about 2 minutes longer. 4. In a small bowl, combine the parsley with the grated lemon zest. Spoon the stew into deep bowls and sprinkle with the gremolata. Drizzle with olive oil and serve. 5. Make Ahead The recipe can be prepared through Step 2 and refrigerated overnight. Reheat before proceeding. Serve With Garlic-rubbed toasts.

ENGLISH TO BECOME OFFICIAL LANGUAGE OF THE EUThe European Commission has just announced an agreement whereby English will be the official language of the European Union rather than German, which was the other possibility. As part of the negotiations, the British Government conceded that English spelling had some room for improvement and has accepted a 5- year phase-in plan that would become known as “Euro-English”. In the first year, “s” will replace the soft “c”. Sertainly, this will make the sivil servants jump with joy. The hard “c” will be dropped in favour of “k”. Casement’s Avenue, Tralee About this Gathering To celebrate the year of “The Gathering” 2013 & also the launch of our beautiful outdoor horticulture, science & natural learning areas , we thought it would be a novel idea to invite all of our past pupils from all parts of the globe, since 1999 & families & friends to join with us for our “Reunion Gathering” at our new school at the Mounthawk Roundabout, Fenit Road,

Clogherbrien , Tralee ( Opposite Topaz) Come and join the fun and enjoy a day that celebrates the best of Irish Culture mingled with the many cultures of the children and families that attend our centres :) Our event was inspired as the first of our Pre-schoolers from the class of 1999 are turning 18 this year and many are heading off to college. We thought it would be fun to meet everyone as young adults as they headed off to make their mark on the World !! RSVP : Susan Quirke Crowley, 087-1679285 ALL were welcome to invite families and friends. We were joined by children and families from Co. Kerry, Galway, Dublin, Australia, Poland, Lithuania, South Africa, USA, Saudi Arabia, Oman & Indonesia, as well as members of our local community, the Garda Siochana and local schools & the Austin Stacks & Imperials sports clubs. We had a gathering sign in list (253 guests) as well as a handprint mural for the little ones (200 children) that can’t yet sign their names. This was placed in a time capsule which has been buried on the grounds of Mounthawk Montessori to be opened in 21 years One of the highlights of the day was the visit of Molly the St. Bernard and a Zumba dancing session hosted by Linda from Indonesia. Our oldest guest was 81 and our youngest was 6 months, it was a fabulous day which was the culmination of weeks of hard work and preparation by the team.

ONE OF THE BEST GATHERINGS!

This month saw the cuts to the Universal Social Charge come into effect for thousands of low and middle income workers in Kerry Deputy Spring, has welcomed the cuts to the USC: “Budget 2015 increased the entry point for the Universal Social Charge to €12,000, which saw 80,000 low income workers relieved of the charge altogether. This brings the total to 410,000 workers removed from the charge by this government. In addition, the 2% USC rate was cut to 1.5% and the 4% rate was reduced to 3.5%. This will mean more money in people’s pockets to spend to support the local economy. “Families in Kerry endured considerable financial pressure over the last few years, as a result of the banking collapse in 2008. That’s why Labour was determined to ensure Budget 2015 began the process of making the economic recovery feel real for families and communities right across the country. “The cuts to the USC will make a real difference for families in Kerry and is a clear signal that the economy is growing. “In the context of an improved economic outlook, I support further cuts to the USC in future budgets, to ensure the economic recovery continues to benefit families in Kerry.”

KNOW YOUR RIGHTS: INCOME TAX BANDS AND RATESQuestionWhat are the income tax bands and tax rates for 2015?

Answer The income tax bands and tax rates for 2015 were announced in Budget 2015.

Nearly all income is liable to tax. The amount of tax that you have to pay depends on your personal circumstances. There is a range of income tax reliefs available that can reduce the amount of tax that you have to pay.

Tax is charged as a percentage of your income. The percentage that you pay depends on the amount of your income.

The first part of your income, up to a certain amount, is taxed at what is known as the standard rate of tax. The amount that it applies to is known as the standard-rate tax band. The remainder of your income is taxed at a higher rate of tax.

For 2015 the standard rate of tax remains at 20% but the standard-rate tax bands have been increased as follows:

TORQUING CARS!NORMAN DEWIS, FAMED JAGUAR TEST DRIVER, TO BE MADE OBE NORMAN DEWIS, ONE OF THE MOTORING WORLD’S MOST REVERED CHARACTERS, WAS FINALLY RECOGNISED IN THE NEW YEAR HONOURS WITH AN OBEThere will be those who’ll say under their breath that it’s not before time, but the celebrations over Norman Dewis’s OBE, announced in the New Year Honours list, will drown out the perhaps understandable grumps. This pint-sized, 94-year old former test driver for Jaguar helped develop one of the greatest-ever developments in automotive braking, the disc brake, which has probably saved tens of thousands of lives over the years. In his 33 year career with the Coventry car maker, he was also a key part of the team which developed and raced the three-times Le Mans winning D-Type sports racing car; is a member of the last surviving all-British Mille Miglia crew; and helped develop some of the world’s most important sports cars and saloons in the world including the E-type and the XJ saloon. “Oh I’m delighted,” said Dewis today. “It was a big surprise and I’m very honoured to receive it. It’s a very personal thing and I feel it’s a bonus.” Many folk including Ralph Speth, Jaguar Land Rover’s chief executive and Telegraph Cars have called for Dewis to be honoured, and staff at JLR including Speth are overjoyed at the decision to make him an Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire. Perhaps it’s the doubtless coincidental fact that this is Jaguar’s 80th celebration year that has spurred the honour, perhaps not, but it’s long overdue, particularly when you consider the risks he ran when developing the disc brake. They’d been fitted to a XK120, and were terrible things, burning out, boiling the fluid,” Dewis told Telegraph Cars in February 2014. “I was asked to help out and said we needed to fit them to the fastest car we made, the C-type.” This was January 1952; prototype C-type 001 was duly converted, and the small team of Dunlop and Jaguar engineers was set up, testing in secret at a former RAF aerodrome at Perton near Wolverhampton.“Oh yes, it was dangerous,” says Dewis quietly. “Sometimes I’d be driving at 130mph and there’d be no brakes. The pedal would sink to the floor and I have to take to the grass.” Dewis reckons the honour has been awarded for his entire career, however, not just the disc brake. “It’s probably for the overall experience,” he said, “for all the time I’ve been at Jaguar. You need to remember just how advanced some of the cars we were working on were. The D-Type was the first car with no chassis, so it was really new technology, and two years later the E-type was the first road-car application of that. It wasn’t until two years after that Formula One picked up the same technology.”

TESLA MODEL S: THE MOST IMPORTANT CAR OF THE LAST 20 YEARSThe Tesla Model S, which is not only the most important car to arrive in the UK this year, but arguably the past 20 years. It is significant because it’s a fully electric vehicle, as opposed to the petrol-electric hybrids out there, and also because it moves the game on in a way few cars have ever managed. For a start, it will cover up to 265 miles on a full charge, and so gone is that number one objection to battery-powered cars: range anxiety.Tesla has also thought about the infrastructure, and is strategically scattering a network of its super-powerful Superchargers across the US, Europe and Asia-Pacific. These can give a Model S a 50 per cent battery boost in just 20 minutes, or a full charge in about an hour.At present there are 14 such stations in the UK, but by 2015 this American brand, set up by technology entrepreneur Elon Musk, says it will have full coverage of the UK and Ireland. Oh, and I should mention that Superchargers are free to use. Should that still not be enough, you can top up at one of the increasing number of public charging posts, or even via a three-pin plug, although it takes much longer (as in pour a cup of cocoa and think about turning in).As for the car itself, first thing to note is that it is quite big. Think top-of-the-range Jaguar and you’re on the right track. This is also the secret behind the Tesla’s success (and with worldwide sales of more than 34,000 units this year, it is a success), because by being big it can carry a lot more batteries than the small EVs traditional car makers have been developing.By packaging the batteries under the floor, the designers have created one of the most spacious interiors imaginable, right down to a couple of optional rear-facing jump seats that pop out of the boot floor, turning this sleek saloon into a seven-seater.Then there’s how it drives. The acceleration is astonishing, with zero lag. This makes overtaking as addictively easy as scoffing Maltesers. Before you know it all the cars in front have gone and you feel a bit sick.Aside from the thorny issue of where the electricity comes from in the first place, the drawbacks are few. I love the 17in iPad-style touchscreen that dominates the dash, but some of the other interior fit and finish isn’t what you’d expect of a vehicle costing upwards of £55,000 (let alone the £98,430 of our test car with all of its optional extras). And a few rivals also beat the Tesla for ride and handling. But such things are not what you remember about a Model S. Rather, it’s the serenity of driving on electric power, the punch of the motor and the sense that, for the first time, you might just have experienced what the car of the future will be like.

ELVIS’S CADILLAC ARRIVES AT BEAULIEUThe King’s own Caddy has just gone on display at the National Motor Museum. A Cadillac Seville which was once owned by Elvis Presley is now on display at the National Motor Museum in Beaulieu. The car, a 1977 model which was purchased in October 1976, is believed to be the last the King purchased for his own personal use, and was driven by him the day before his death. It is finished in a burgundy and silver colour scheme chosen by Presley himself, and still has the original CB radio which he opted to install in order to communicate with the kitchen and guardhouse at his Graceland mansion. After Presley’s death, the car was gifted by his father, Vernon, to Elvis’s girlfriend, Ginger Alden. It was auctioned in Las Vegas in 1994, and sold for $101,500 (approx. £64,600 at current exchange rates) to a private collector. It was then sold again for $81,250 (approx. £51,700) in August this year, to Elvis fans Steve and Suzannah Hall, who then offered the car up for display at Beaulieu. One of the first people to see the automotive slice of rock’n’roll history at its new home was Lady Fiona Montagu, wife of Lord Montagu, the founder of the museum. Lady Montagu wore her own version of Elvis’s famous white jumpsuit, and said: “I am a huge fan, and had the costume made to wear at an Elvis-themed fundraising evening we held in the Museum last year in support of our Beaulieu education charity, the Countryside Education Trust.”

TOYOTA, NISSAN, HYUNDAI SALES WELL AHEAD OF LAST YEAR!New car sales were up by 18% in first 10 Days of 2015 whilst the number of used cars imported declinedThe latest figures on new car sales released today by Car History experts Motorcheck.ie show the number of new cars registered in the first 10 days of 2015 has increased by more than 18% on the same period for 2014 with an additional 1,747 units sold. This is despite the fact that 2014 was the best year for new car sales since 2008 with sales of more than 96,000 units. Most commentators are predicting new car sales of between 105,000 and 115,000 units for 2015 and if the current positive trends continue the industry can expect new car sales to reach the upper end of that spectrum.Interestingly, used cars imported into the country in the first 10 days of 2015 were down 16% for the same period in 2014.The top selling new car for the first 10 days has been Hyundai’s iX35 crossover SUV. The small SUV segment continues to enjoy great popularity with the Hyundai iX35, Nissan Qashqai and Kia Sportage all appearing in the top ten.Commenting on the figures, Michael Rochford, Managing Director of Motorcheck.ie said “The numbers continue to remain very positive for the Irish Motor Trade. Annual new car sales should be well in excess of 100k units in order to sustain a healthy trade sector. It’s too early to draw any inferences from the decline in used cars being imported but this is the first time we have seen this kind of trend in recent years. The used car market grew significantly in 2014 and with new car sales at current rates it should ease the pressures on indigenous used stock by 2017”

FAI NATIONAl P.R.O. OF THE YEAR

with “The Voice” Pat Harnett

TRALEE RUN’S THE KINGDOM!No this is not a piece about which town is better, Tralee or Killarney, or is Tralee the real seat of power. Run the Kingdom promotes a series of road races and Tralee is certainly becoming the capital of running in the county. These events bring huge numbers to the town and all these spend money so it’s a win / win. The next Run the Kingdom event is the Tralee Musical Society Fancy Dress 5k which takes place on this Sunday, January 18th. The sign-on fee is e15 euro but you got to be quick as the registration closes Friday night. As the Musical Society are in the planning stages for Sister Act – A Divine Musical Comedy expect to see many priests and nuns on the run so maybe warn your elderly relatives in case they think the clergy are being run out of town!! The Musical Society will put on a performance after the race at the Wetlands Centre, which is the start and finish point for the race, along with refreshments. They have great prizes for the best costume so think musically and what a wide range that gives you such as punk or pop for example! Also for those of a competitive nature the first 3 men and women home will get a free entry into the Tralee International Marathon. Next up will be the Kerin’s O’Rahillys 10k that takes place on February 1st. This hugely successful club has a huge membership from underage to seniors and this forms part of their fundraising. The 10k route will start and finish outside of the clubhouse on what is a big day of sport in the town as Kerry face Mayo later that afternoon in the League in Tralee. The first man and lady home will receive the John Dowling Cup in honour of one of the clubs greatest players. February will be a busy month with the Valentine’s Weekend 10 mile road race. This is part of a big weekend of attractions in the town that continues to grow each year. March has the Tralee International Full and Half Marathon with the Run the Kingdom Schools Race in April. We will bring you more details of these events and the programmes for the rest of the year in forthcoming editions.

AFTERNOON DATE FOR STACKS:The AIB GAA Football All Ireland Senior Club between Stacks and Slaughtneil has been confirmed for a 4pm throw-in at O’Moore Park, Portlaoise on the 15th of February. The game will be live on TG4. A 4pm throw in is probably not ideal for Stacks fans as it means a late return home on a Sunday night. However I don’t this this will in any way deter the hundreds of Black and Amber supporters that will travel. Both sides are new to this stage of the competition so it’s anyone game. We will all be cheering the boys on as the road to Croke Park beckons.

Stacks win again this week:The Stacks great season has seen them pick up another award with the ‘Rockumentary’ winning a GAA McNamee Award. Headed up by Rory Kirby the production was named the overall winner in the Club Project Award (Digital and Social Media) category. This is the first such Award for the Stacks and they will be presented with their McNamee Award by GAA President Liam O’Neill this Saturday night in Croke Park. Terrace Talk wins again! The Sam Maguire Special Terrace Talk programme

gave unique insights into the history of famous Cup including an interview with the silversmiths who crafted the ‘new’ Sam. Also on the programme were many winning Kerry captains including the oldest living winner plus the story of how Hollywood star Tom Cruise hoisted the Cup over his head in West Kerry. Congratulations to Deirdre Walsh, Ciaran O’Regan and Weeshie Fogarty.

RACING’S BACK:The Kingdom Greyhound Stadium is back in full swing this weekend with graded programmes on both Friday and Saturday night. The GMHD Insurances Killarney Juvenile Classic, with a winner’s prize of e15,000 begins on Friday night February 6th and owners wishing and owners wishing to qualify their dogs for the event can avail of qualifying trials on Friday evenings from 5 to 6pm for Jan 16th,23rd and 30th. Please book in the racing office on 0671 448057.

DYNAMOS DOING IT:Tralee Dynamos are back amongst the elite of Kerry soccer with their win over Killarney Celtic seeing them move into the top 2 in the KDL Premier. That win last Sunday will see them head into this weekend’s Munster Junior Cup away to Drinagh United in great form. In Kerry they beat Dingle Bay, Tralee Dynamos and The Park to win the first trophy of the season and are now in last 32 action against the West Cork side this Sunday with a 2pm kick off.

ROAD TO CUP SUCCESS BEGINS:The draws for the premier Cup in Kerry, the Greyhound Bar Cup, was made at the KDL Delegate meeting this week. In the 1st round of the Greyhound Tralee Dynamos are at home to Killorglin, Park welcome Ballymac Galaxy to Christy Leahy Park, Mitchels Avenue will face QPR, CSKA Tralee take on Rattoo Rovers, Tralee Celtic are away to Classic FC while Tralee Athletic have a bye into Round 2. In the Jimmy Falvey Memorial Youths Cup The Park are the only Tralee side in the competition and are home to Fenit Samphires in Round 1 and if the win will face Listowel Celtic away in the quarter finals. The Park are also in the Dominos Pizza 17’s Cup and are home top Castlegregory Celtic in Round 1 and if they get through to that then they will travel to Killarney Celtic in the last 8.

PARK LIFE:The St Brendan’s Academy is back after the Christmas break and continues every Saturday morning. It is great to see The Park back in the Girls League and training for the u14 Girls takes place on Sunday at 2pm at Christy Leahy Park and new members are always welcome. The Youths had a good win over CS Abbeydorney and are close to a League semi-final place. The u14’s had a great away win at Killorglin while the u12 Division 2 side were involved in a 3 all thriller at home to Killarney Celtic B.Kingdom Cycling Club welcomes new members: The numbers of young cyclists taking part in the Kingdom

Cycling Club’s Sunday spins has dramatically increased with 9 new riders joining the regular members on the roads around Tralee, Ballymac and Farranfore. Well done to Kieran Coggins who did his club proud with a splendid time trial on Christmas Day beating off the opposition in his u14 age group in the cycle from Camp to Tralee. He was presented with his trophy by the organisers, the Tralee Cycling Club, on Monday night. The club was also represented in the Jimmy Duffy Cycle, from Tralee to Castleisland.

Brian power instead of pedal power: The Kingdom Cycling club will host a quiz and open night in the Ballyroe Heights Hotel next Friday, January 23rd. The open night commences at 6.30pm with a chat and demo and the quiz starting at 8pm sharp. The night is for the benefit of our young cyclists.

RINGING THE CHANGES AT THE TRALEE BOXING The Tralee Boxing Club has moved from its old premise in the old Army Barracks in Ballymullen to a new unit at Unit 5 Monavalley Industrial Estate (near the Mia Lynch Transport depot). The new venue is much more suitable for the clubs activities, both in and out of the ring. Pat O’Shea told me what the move will mean for the club. “While we enjoyed our time in Ballymullin the new building in Monavalley gives us lots more scope. The facilities for the boxers will be much better and it also gives us the room to put up more boxing bags and training equipment. “The club has over 30 members from juveniles up to seniors with both males and females involved and we are now able to take on more members so anyone who wants to come down please do”.

The Tralee Boxing club is no stranger to success in the ring with Marie McCarthy having now won 2 All Irelands and just before Christmas Brian Sullivan added a Munster Novice title to his string off success.

ON THE BOARDS:TRALEE IMPERIALS NEWS:The academy continues at the regular time on Saturday mornings. Payment for the second term will be collected at both sessions.Imperials C u12’s had a nail-biting third win in the League with a 14-13 victory. Aisling O’Connell and Bronagh Kelliher were joint captains on the day and led their players to the win. The East Kerry side are very strong and also defeated the same boys in the League before Christmas. However encouragingly for St Brendan’s they had 8 different scorers on the night. The u12’s went down to leaders TK Bobcats in their League clash. Brendan’s players found scores very hard to come by but did restrict their opposition especially in the second quarter. However Bobcats were too strong all over the court and ran out 40-24 winners. Mikey McCarthy and Garry Lynch were the Saints top scorers.St Brendan’s will be hosting two tournaments in Tralee this March with the annual James Hobbert Memorial Tournament for the u17 boys and the Jimmy Curran Tournaments for u14 boys on the weekend of March 22nd.
