Welcome to the second edition of TransHealth for 2018. We can see the first signs of autumn and winter, which means that the cold and flu season is just around the corner. We encourage you to reduce your risk of flu and its complications by getting vaccinated.

In light of the listeriosis scare, we also include articles relating to the importance of washing your hands effectively and some tips to boost your immune system. I would like to remind members that the Transmed annual general meeting will take place at Lagoon Beach Hotel & Spa, 1 Lagoon Beach Gate Drive, Lagoon Beach, Milnerton, Cape Town on Wednesday, 27 June 2018. It is important for Transmed to engage with its members and we encourage members to attend this meeting if possible.

June is blood donor month. Blood is the most precious gift that anyone can give to another person — the gift of life. A decision to donate your blood can save a life.

In this edition we also include a health article that focuses on prostate cancer, which is common in men. The article provides some advice on how to prevent prostate cancer and we encourage our male members who are 50 years old and older to get tested.

Congratulations to our first edition competition winners. In this edition there is another opportunity to win great prizes.

We trust that you will enjoy this newsletter and would like to remind you that maintaining and improving your health are important.

We welcome any suggestions that you may have for articles or information on member benefits you would like to see published in future newsletters.

Please send your feedback and suggestions to [email protected] or Suggestions, PO Box 32931, Braamfontein 2017.

Until the next edition, stay healthy and keep well.

Warm regards

KEEP YOUR IMMUNE SYSTEM HEALTHY THIS AUTUMNBelow are a few tips to keep your immune system healthy during autumn.

• Don’t smoke.

• Drink a lot of fluids.

• Exercise regularly.

• Get adequate sleep.

• Maintain a healthy diet.

• Manage your stress.

Most people can recover from flu symptoms within a few days without medical attention. However, high-risk patients could develop severe illness resulting in hospitalisation. Besides keeping up good hygiene habits, drinking enough fluids, having enough sleep and managing your stress, you should also consider getting vaccinated, especially if you belong to one of the high-risk groups.

The people who are at high risk of serious complications from flu include young children, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart or lung disease and people who are 65 years old and older. The vaccination might not prevent the flu in its totality, but it reduces the severity of the

disease and the incidence of complications and death.

It is important to get a flu vaccine every year, as flu viruses are constantly changing.

Flu vaccinations can reduce flu, doctors’ visits and days off sick from work and school.

Did you know that Transmed Medical Fund covers one vaccine per beneficiary per annum? We encourage you to reduce your family’s risk of pneumococcal disease and flu by taking advantage of Transmed Medical Fund’s out-of-hospital preventative care benefits for pneumococcal or flu vaccinations.

Flu sounds harmless – maybe a couple of days in

bed. You might develop a sudden fever, runny nose, nasal congestion,

sore throat, cough (usually dry),

headache and muscle and joint

pain.

GET VACCINATED

DON’T GET CAUGHT THIS WINTER:

YOUR HANDS: DID YOU WASH THEM?

HOW CAN WASHING YOUR HANDS KEEP YOU HEALTHY?Germs can get into the body through our eyes, nose and mouth and make us sick. Hand washing with soap removes germs from hands and helps prevent sickness.

Hand washing helps prevent infections for these reasons:

• People often touch their eyes, nose and mouth without realising it, introducing germs into their bodies.

• Germs from unwashed hands may get into food and drinks when people prepare, eat or drink them.

• Germs can grow in some types of food and drink and make people sick.

• Germs from unwashed hands can be transferred to other objects, such as doorknobs, tables or toys and then be transferred to another person’s hands.

WHAT IS THE RIGHT WAY TO WASH YOUR HANDS?• Wet your hands with clean, running

water and apply soap.• Lather your hands by rubbing them

together with the soap.• Scrub all surfaces of your hands, including

the palms, backs, fingers, between your fingers and under your nails.

• Rinse your hands under clean, running water.

• Dry your hands using a clean towel or air dry them.

WHEN SHOULD YOU WASH YOUR HANDS?Hand washing at any time of the day can help get rid of germs, but there are key times when it’s most important to wash your hands.

• Before, during and after preparing food• Before eating• Before and after caring for someone who

is sick• Before and after treating a cut or wound• After using the bathroom, changing

diapers or cleaning up a child who has used the bathroom

• After blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing

• After touching an animal, animal food or treats, animal cages or animal faeces

• After touching garbage• If your hands are visibly dirty or greasy

If soap and water are not available, alcohol-based hand rubs can be used.

• Use enough hand rub to cover both hands.

• Scrub all surfaces of your hands, including the palms, backs, fingers, between your fingers and under your nails.

• Rub hands together until dry.

Alcohol-based hand rubs come in small containers that can be carried in your bag or briefcase or in your pocket. They are ideal for travelling.

Hand washing stops the spread of germs. Germs are everywhere! They can get onto your hands and items you touch throughout the day. Even when your hands look clean, they can still be carrying germs. Washing hands with soap and water at key times is one of the most important steps you can take to get rid of germs and avoid spreading germs to those around you.

Walking is an easy way to strengthen your bones and muscles, burn calories and lift your mood. If you don't currently walk for exercise, try walking for five to 10 minutes every day.

ARE YOU GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP

Most of us have experienced trouble

sleeping at one time or another. The lack of quality sleep can have a negative impact on your energy, emotional balance and

health.

?TIPS FOR SLEEPING WELL• Stick to a sleeping schedule• Exercise regularly• Avoid caffeine• Take a warm bath before you go to sleep• Listen to relaxing music

If you cannot fall asleep after 20 minutes or so, get up and do something that will help you relax. Go back to bed when you feel sleepy again.

HOW MANY HOURS OF SLEEP ARE ENOUGH FOR GOOD HEALTH?The amount of sleep you need depends on various factors — especially your age. While sleep needs vary significantly among individuals, consider these general guidelines for different age groups:

Age group Recommended amount of sleep

New-borns 14 to 17 hours a day

12 months About 10 hours a night, plus four hours of naps

Two years About 11 to 12 hours a night, plus a one- to two-hour afternoon nap

Three to five years 10 to 13 hours

Six to 13 years Nine to 11 hours

14 to 17 years Eight to 10 hours

Adults Seven to nine hours

In addition to age, other factors can affect how many hours of sleep you need. For example:

• Pregnancy – Changes in the body during early pregnancy can increase the need for sleep.

• Ageing – Older adults need about the same amount of sleep as younger adults. As you get older, however, your sleeping patterns might change. Older adults tend to sleep more lightly and for shorter time spans than younger adults.

• Previous sleep deprivation – If you're sleep deprived, the amount of sleep you need increases.

• Sleep quality – If your sleep is frequently interrupted, you're not getting quality sleep. The quality of your sleep is just as important as the quantity.

Some people claim to feel rested on just a few hours of sleep a night, but their performance is likely affected. Research shows that people who sleep so little over many nights don't perform as well on complex mental tasks as do people who get closer to seven hours of sleep a night.

WHAT ARE THE RISK FACTORS FOR PROSTATE CANCER?• Age – Your risk of prostate cancer

increases as you age. Prostate cancer is rare among men under the age of 45, but is common among men over the age of 50.

• Race – For reasons not yet determined, African men are more likely to develop the disease than men of other races.

• Genetics – If men in your family have had prostate cancer, your risk of getting it may be higher. Also, if you have a family history of genes that increase the risk of breast cancer (BRCA1 or BRCA2) or a very strong family history of breast cancer, your risk of prostate cancer may be higher.

• Obesity – Obese men who are diagnosed with prostate cancer may be more likely to have advanced prostate cancer, which is more difficult to treat.

Prostate cancer may cause no signs or symptoms in its early stages. Prostate cancer that's more advanced may cause signs and symptoms such as:

• trouble urinating• decreased force in the stream of urine• blood in semen• discomfort in the pelvic area• bone pain.

PREVENTION• Choose a healthy diet full of fruits and

vegetables. Avoid high-fat food and instead focus on choosing a variety of fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Fruit and vegetables contain many vitamins and nutrients that can contribute to your health. Whether you can prevent prostate cancer

through diet has yet to be conclusively proved, but following a healthy diet with a variety of fruit and vegetables can improve your overall health.

• Choose healthy food over supplements. No studies have shown that supplements play a role in reducing your risk of prostate cancer. Instead, choose food that is rich in vitamins and minerals so that you can maintain healthy levels of vitamins in your body.

• Exercise most days of the week. Exercise improves your overall health, helps you maintain your weight and improves your mood. There is some evidence that men who don't exercise have higher prostate-specific antigen (PSA) levels, while men who exercise may have lower PSA levels. Try to exercise most days of the week. If you're new to exercise, start slowly and work your way up to more exercise time each day.

• Maintain a healthy weight. If your current weight is healthy, work to maintain it by exercising most days of the week. If you need to lose weight, add more exercise and reduce the number of calories you take in each day. Ask your doctor for help in creating a plan for healthy weight loss.

Prostate cancer that is detected while it is still confined in the prostate gland has a better chance of successful treatment. Screening is done with a blood test called a PSA screening test. The test detects prostate abnormalities. Transmed allows for one PSA screening test per year for beneficiaries who are 50 years old and older.
