Fast response to distress is key to the overall success of a search and rescue (SAR) operation. The result of SAR depends on the speed with which the opera-tion is planned and carried out. Thorough evaluation of the situation, an immediate decision on the best course of action, and timely activation of SAR facilities lead the operation to a successful end.
Transas’ Search & Rescue software allows straight-forward control of SAR missions and SAR resources. The Transas SAR module helps operators to efficiently determine search areas, estimate resources required, and calculate search patterns.

SAR operation stagesThe International Aeronautical and Maritime Search and Rescue manual (IAMSAR), developed by IMO, organises response activities to distress situations in defined stag-es: awareness, initial action, planning, and operation. Whereas awareness and initial action stages stipulate incident data collection, the planning and operation stages usually require reliable computer support for maximum efficiency. Transas’ Search & Rescue module is designed to support SAR operations according to the stages defined by IAMSAR.

Transas SAR module determines the search area from:
• Probable incident time
• Probable incident coordinates
• Search object (person in water, life raft, etc.)
• Weather conditions (wind and water current)
• Search operation start time.
As a result, the operator receives:
• Initial coordinates of incident
• calculated direction and distance of drift
• Probable search area.
After evaluating information about each emergency, the SAR team must plan its response actions and re-sources. during planning of the first search, the oper-ator selects:
• Available resources and types (helicopter, airplane, vessel)
• capacity of each resource
• Search altitude
• Visibility in the search area
• Additional correction factors.
The operator then receives:
• Search effort for each resource
• Total search effort.
Search patterns must be calculated next. The operator can define:
• number of sub-areas to divide main search area
• distribution of resources to sub-areas
• Type of search pattern for each resource.
The Transas SAR system returns:
• Probable search area and its division into sub-areas
• calculated search patterns for each resource.
Search planning calculates the probability of success, and generates an SAR report describing search areas for each resource.
In the case of unsuccessful searches, the operator can plan a new search based on the previous data.
The Transas SAR module also enables all SAR infor-mation to be archived for future debriefing, analysis and quality control.
