    When $ou come to this meeting, $ear after$ear, $ou get to sa$ *we had record sales.

    We had record earnings. We had record reinvestment&ac" into our compan$.

    +ut $ou "now ! sa$ all that, &ut let me tell$ou m$ friends, $ou &etter &e read$ to &e

    &etter. +ecause toda$, for whatever reason,whether it's our success or our sie *Walmart

    Stores, !ncorporated, has generated fear *ifnot env$, in some circles.

    %nd that ma"es it more important than everthat we focus on doing the right thing, and

    doing things right *ever$ time.

    #here are two things that we should do. -um&erone, is tell the Walmart stor$. )et the message

    out there. %nd the second thing is *sta$ thecourse. Walmart is too important to individual

    families who are stretching a &udget. We'retoo important to the suppliers who emplo$

    millions of people. We're too important toour associates *for whom we have so much love,

    and value so much.

    %ctuall$ we/ started in 0123. Started on4ain Street and 4iddle5eld. Little countr$

    store that at that time was started in thefamil$, and it was prett$ dicult to "now

    *it was a &ig decision. %nd m$ &rother andlaw and ! decided we were going to ta"e that

    step and we went into &usiness. We startedin a little one room &uilding that had a full

    &asement &ut we didn't have an$ plum&ing inthe &asement *&ut the upstairs retail area

    was ver$ small.

    We were there for a $ear and a half to two

    $ears, then we moved on to a larger store

    in a shopping center. We spent several $earsthere and proceeded in 0113 *we &uilt this

    facilit$ here.

    #his gentleman here, that happens to &e m$son. 6e's &een m$ right hand man for man$

    $ears. !t was much easier to retire in 0112

    when he was here to ta"e over.

    One of the &iggest parts of our store &eingin a rural area is what we call our hardware

    section *we've got the nuts and the &oltsand the nails, and those t$pes of fasteners.

    #hat's alwa$s &een good &ecause a lot of farmerswere alwa$s mending machiner$ and things around

    the farm. %nd some of the "ids that were *"ids

    the end of the da$, grandpa or dad would giveus their poc"et change. ! spent a lot of late

    nights in here, too. Especiall$ when we were&uilding it.

    are things going on within this countr$ *particularl$from a &usiness and economic standpoint that

    ! went to several di?erent &an"s to chec"on some funding, and when ! got an appraisal

    on m$ &usiness and the &uildings, the appraiseractuall$ came in and devalued the &uilding.

    6ere, ! 5gured it'd &e appreciating afterli"e ten $ears... %nd he came in and said

    a lower value, and ! Huestioned m$self *!said D6ow could this &eID +ecause $'"now,

    with in;ation, and the econom$ isn't great,&ut... it still should at least &e holding

    it's value. 6e said no, an$ time a Walmartcomes into town, the$ "noc" the values down

    &ecause sooner or later, there's going to&e a &unch of empt$ &uildings and none of

    them are going to &e a&le to sell.

    %n$ communit$ in a grand opening is goingto see a change. % drop in sales, it happens,

    regardless of whether it's Walmart or some&od$else. Aou'll get a drop in sales. So there'll

    &e a dramatic change in something. 6ow longit'll lastI !t can't last forever, &ecause

    $ou can't stand the overhead if $ou don'thave the &usiness. So something has to happen.

    We thought it was the most fantastic thing

    in the world when Walmart was coming to 6earne,

    We could not sa$ enough good a&out them. Wecould not do enough for them to help them

    come. When Walmart 5rst made the decisionto come here, $ou could come to town on a

    What the pu&lic doesn't understand is thatthose ever$da$ low prices are &ased on taxpa$er

    su&sidies. Walmart is getting awa$ with it&ecause the$ can.

    ! tal"ed to the regional personnel managera&out who is going to ta"e care of the Walmart

    associates, and their health care needs, andhe said *let the state do it.

    #he personnel manager told me personall$ thatthere's assistance out there for people, the$

    should &e a&le to go use it. se $our taxpa$er'sdollars.

    ! had a list of all the government agenciesand di?erent places that people could go

    if the$ needed mone$ for their utilit$ &ills,if the$ needed to appl$ for food stamps, or

    if the$ needed to appl$ for W!C, or for 4edic%id.

    So $our dignit$ is not there, $our pride isnot there, $ou go to wor" "nowing that $ou're

    not going to &e ma"ing enough mone$ to reall$ma"e ends meet, &ut $et $ou've gotta go with

    district of St. Louis count$. Walmart receivesover @0 million dollars in su&sid$ from the

    4o. government. Cathedral Cit$ made a 0.Fmillion dollar investment &ut &ecause of Wal*4art's

    lies and not stepping up to the plate withtheir commitments, we're short on policemen,

    we're short on 5reman, we've eliminate therecreation commission of the cit$, we're not

    a&le to provide the services to our servicesto the residents that the$ need and deserve

    and we're going to have lives hanging in the&alance &ecause we're not going to &e a&le

    to provide these services. 4$ name is Charles6aas !'ve &een a Jth grade teacher in Washington

    state for man$ $ears and when ! thin" of themillion dollars that Walmart received for

    its distri&ution center, and what we could&e don't there for students it's outrageous.

    continue to provide some level of service.!n !llinois, Walmart has received 0GG million

    dollars in su&sidies and that has a?ected

    our school s$stems to rehire all of the supportteachers we need &ac", the support personnel,

    we could have our ps$chologist &ac" out socialwor"ers &ac", our counselors &ac", we could

    pic" up and these programs are &eing cut &ecauseWalmart has received su&sidied. What we're

    experiencing currentl$ is that Walmart hasfor &usiness purposes have decide that the$

    are going to leave our communit$. #he$'removing 3 miles awa$. -ot ver$ far awa$, in

    fact one is &eing &uilt on the propert$ lineof our cit$ which we still will not receive

    an$ &ene5t from. =ust outside the cit$ limits.=ust as we were a&out to start to receive

    a &etter part of the sales tax revenue, fromthe deal, we found out that we'd &een the

    chumps. #o end it with a vacant &uilding ofthe sie that most &usinesses cannot 5ll.

    So $ou have a huge &uilding that sits vacantfor months

    and $ears.

    Aou "now, responsi&le citienship also meansloo"ing out for the environment. We can ma"e

    a di?erence in this area's sustaina&ilit$.One of the most exciting things a&out the

    Biver"eeper organiation is wor"ing with thepu&lic. We have a lot of volunteers that volunteer

    to "eep their part of the Cataw&a Biver. +ecausethe Cataw&a Biver's dammed 00 times and has

    00 la"es on it. We have la"es with coves andso we call our volunteers cove*"eepers. %nd

    these cove*"eepers want to safeguard and protectthe Cataw&a Biver. Essentiall$ what we did

    was an investigation and we visited a&outseven Walmarts in the Cataw&a Biver alle$

    what $our response it. %nd if there's no response,that's what's going to &e on our we&site.

    So that's what ! did. #wo or three da$s later,the$ still didn't call &ac" we then sent them

    the law, and ! elevated the rhetoric and said

    it appears to us as if $ou're violating the

    storage laws, and we're getting read$ to contactour attorne$s, still no one called, 5nall$

    the attorne$s gave me the name of a personthat the$ thought was their contact and !

    5nall$ reached that person at Walmart 6eadHuartersin %r"ansas, and he said he had

    had them pull those chemicals from the par"inglots and put them under cover. %s ! read the

    case histor$ and all the environmental crimesand particularl$ the consent decrees from

    the attorne$ general's oce ordering Walmartto esta&lish &etter environmental protection,

    what ;a&&ergasted me most a&out the lac"of corporate response was their apparent disregard

    for these consent decrees and the$ had notta"en them ver$ seriousl$. !t's onl$ the local

    gu$s. ! can sa$ in m$ histor$ as river "eeper,

    ! don't thin" !'ve ever encountered a corporation,

    &e it a power compan$, an oil compan$, asunresponsive as Walmart. Wildlife conservation

    is ver$ important to me, &ut it's reall$ excitingwhen a compan$ li"e Walmart ma"es it a priorit$,

    too.

    We have a great relationship with the Chinesegovernment. #he$ have treated us ver$ fairl$

    in and what the$ have done. #he$ actuall$,much li"e in the S% hold us to a higher standard

    *higher standard of sanitation, higher standardof emplo$ment.

    We got our message focused, we've hammeredawa$ on the phones, hammered awa$ on doors,

    people saw us coming and going when the$ wentto church. Ever$ time the$ went to a store

    in !nglewood, there was a ;$er a&out oure?orts. We held rallies.

    % legal strateg$ enough resources to havethe research to &e a&le to ma"e $our case.

    We grew to 0F8 volunteers, and we had plotcaptains, and we had an area chairman, we

    proceeded to collect signatures on our petitions.
