ILLINOIS ARTICULATION INITIATIVE – IAI

TRANSFER GENERAL EDUCATION COURSES

The Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) is the statewide agreement among all of the public and some selected private four-year and two-year higher education institutions in Illinois.

The Illinois Transferable General Education Core Curriculum (GECC) consists of 12 to 13 courses (37 to 41 semester hours of credit) within 5 areas.

ICCB Mandate – all Illinois Community Colleges must use GECC Core

Credit policies are published each university

“Credit policy for out-of-state and non-IAI institutions:

Courses transferred from any accredited institution which clearly matches an Illinois Articulation Initiative (IAI) General Education course, will count toward Eastern's General Education even if we offer no comparable course.

Community college substitutionsCommunity college and university courses are subject to change at any time. Courses that do not have a direct equivalency will transfer as electives. Electives may be placed in major, minor and/or general education requirements. All college level courses will be applied towards graduation hours.”

Issues Related to Determining Transferability

Course numbers can change from one year to another Degree requirements can change from one year to another Information on new courses created for degrees is continuously

updated Courses may apply to one degree program but not another (within

the same university)

Illinois Universities are now starting to develop Transfer Centers with Specialists & Coordinators to help student navigate the maze of identifying course & program requirements

Issues Related to Determining Transferability

In an effort to help students better identify how courses taken will be applied in a receiving institution, a state-wide initiative was recently developed called U.Select.

This on-line program is now up & running, but still being refined

Development of University Transfer Coordinator Departments

“Illinois State University is a member of the u.select website (formerly CAS). On u.select you can view  Course Equivalency Guides for your specific institution as well as view how courses may apply within an Illinois State University degree program.”
