Sending Forth
Liberia News
Today we send forth three of our members on a mission to
Liberia. We pray for safe travel, open communication, and
direction for The Village of Hope Project.
Alma Flahn, George Roberson, and David Smith will depart
for Liberia on Sunday, March 9 and return on March 19. The
objective of this trip is to scout out the land that has been
donated for the church/school and to meet with the Bishop
and District Superintendent of that area and to lay the basic
ground work before construction begins.
BFUMC supports this mission project and periodically has
collection drives for various items needed in Liberia
(clothing, food, textbooks, etc.). More mission trips will be
announced in the future.

Wednesday, March 5th
Ash Wednesday
This Wednesday, March 5th, is Ash Wednesday. Our
Wednesday night activities will begin with a light meal of
Soup and Salad. This meager meal is intentional to prepare
our heart, mind, and soul for the beginning of the Lenten
season.
The meal will begin at 5:45 p.m. followed by an Ash
Wednesday service in the Sanctuary at 7:00 p.m.
Holy Communion during Lent
Holy Communion
You are invited to this informal time of
meditation, in the Chapel, as we journey
together toward Calvary. Join us each
Wednesday during Lent at 5:30 p.m.

April 9 Rev. Parker Benson, Karen Whitehead
What is the Meaning of Lent and
Ash Wednesday?
Lent is the Christian season of preparation before Easter. Ash
Wednesday marks the first day, or the start of the season of
Lent, which begins 40 days prior to Easter (Sundays are
considered “mini-Easters,” i.e. celebrations of the resurrection
of Christ, and are not included in the count). Therefore, there
are 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Easter, excluding the
Sundays (it is inappropriate to fast on Sunday). Forty days
correspond to the 40 days of Jesus’ struggle and temptation in
the wilderness (Luke 4:2); the 40 days Moses fasted on the
mountain (Exodus 34:28); Elijah’s 40 days in flight to the
mountain of God (1 Kings 19:4f); and of course, the 40 years of
Israel’s wanderings in the desert.
Lent is a time when Christians prepare for Easter by observing a
period of fasting, repentance, moderation, and spiritual
discipline. During the Ash Wednesday service, the minister will
lightly rub the sign of the cross with ashes onto the foreheads of
worshippers. This mark on the forehead
symbolizes ownership (Ezekiel 9:4; Revelation
7:2,3; 14.1). As a Christian, you belong to Christ:
“You are not your own; you were bought at a
price. Therefore honor God with your body.” (1
Corinthians 6:19,20). Ashes are the biblical
symbol of mourning and repentance (2 Samuel 13:19; Daniel
9:3; Matthew 11:20,21). Also, ashes are a symbol of death and
remind us of our mortality. This is based on God’s words to
Adam in Genesis 3:19, “For dust you are and to dust you will
return,” and on Abraham’s confession in Genesis 18:27: “I am
nothing but dust and ashes.” Ashes are a reminder of our
mortality and of our need to repent and make peace with God
before this life is over.
Not all Christian churches observe Ash Wednesday or Lent.
They are mostly observed by the Lutheran, Methodist,
Presbyterian and Anglican denominations, and also by Roman
Catholics.
Lent is a time to refocus our lives on Christ: “Salvation is found
in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to
men by which we must be saved.” (Acts 4:12). Lent is a time of
humbling ourselves before God. It is a time when we remember
who we are and who Christ is. We are sin and death. He is the
resurrection and the life. We are dust and to dust we shall
return. Yet whoever believes in Christ will live, even though he
dies. We gather on Ash Wednesday to humble ourselves and
refocus our lives on Jesus Christ. We gather to worship Him as
our Lord and Savior.

Poor food handling can spread viruses and
bacteria. Improper touching of food that is intended for
other people can spread viruses and bacteria.
What should I do? Be mindful not to handle food with your bare hands
if somebody else is planning to eat it. Use a napkin or a clean utensil to
move or transfer food and always wash your hands thoroughly before
handling any food item.
